I fell in love with this sampler the moment I saw it.
Perhaps it’s all of the red! It also features lovely alphabets
and exquisitely beautiful bands. On 40c linen,
Margriet of The Essamplaire provides the following
information: Aquilina's wonderful band sampler is of Spanish
origin, worked mainly in red and greens. The sampler appears quite
delicate due to the fact that some of the satin stitch bands have spaces
between the stitches. The original sampler is in a private collection.
The sampler is worked using cross stitch, satin, four sided,
double running, herringbone and some marking cross.
This sampler is only available as a kit, kitted with 40c
linen + Au Ver A Soie’s Soie d’Alger silk in 5 colors. If you
prefer a different linen count, we will substitute the linen
and adjust your kit price accordingly.
We received a partial shipment with more kits to come.
There are only 5 colors in this stunning sampler, and I
wondered what it might look like to replace the 2 greens with
2 rich shades of gold, so I photographed it. It would make a
lovely “Holiday Sampler” with either set of colors. If you
would like the 3 gold skeins with your kit, it will be an
additional $12.90 less 15% during October.

Lena Ter Meulen-1800 Lena's sampler is typical of
small red samplers made in one of the orphanages in
Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Het Diaconie Weeshuis.
Upon entering the orphanage the children were given a
number, and Lena's number was 142. She was 13 and
3/4 years old. She was the daughter of Lena Friesbach
and Gerrit Ter Meulen (GTM). She was baptized on
April 5, 1786 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.
She entered the orphanage Jan, 29, 1800 at the age
of 13. She left the orphanage on October 22, 1807 and
received her inheritance. She took a position as a servant
girl. At the age of 27, in 1813, she married Casper
Speelmeijer. She was married a second time to Isaac
Sluiter in 1842. They divorced in 1848, and she married
a third time to Benjamin Verbruggen.
The initials of SEB or SB appear on these samplers
from 1773 to 1801. SEB or Sophia Elizabeth
Baerselman was hired to be the linen mother for the
large linen shop in the orphanage. Her duties included
teaching her charges a set of skills that would allow them
to be self-sufficient. Her initials always appear first,
followed by numerous other sets of initials.
These little samplers are all worked in marking
stitch making them reversible and most were done on a
70 count linen. Four-sided stitch and Algerian eye were
also used on this sampler. Stitch count is 214 x 168. On
45 count linen measures 9.5" x 7.5". We have 35-, 40- &
45- count kits. (Each kit is $64, kitted with silk.)
RVDB-1794 A great little surface darning sampler from
the Netherlands. There are quite a few of these pictured
on the website of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
Most are very similar but some also have flowers on them.
I believe these were made around Amsterdam, and this
would not have been a girl’s first sampler but most likely
her second or third one. There are a series of samplers
made by girls where they made a cross stitch one, then a
queen stitch one, and finally one along these lines but
much larger and elaborate. The various darning patterns
were made so that a girl could mend woven clothing
which was made up of fabrics woven in twill and different
brocade patterns. 7" x 9.5" on 40c ($80 w/silk)

The extensive historical and genealogical information that Margriet includes brings them “to life” and makes them more interesting to stitch.
Mary Eldrig - 1714-1715 ($124 w/silk less 30% = $86.80) Mary’s sampler shows the change in
samplers that took place in the late 17th century and early 18th century in England. We see fewer
decorative bands and a great deal more text. The boxers are a carryover from the 17th century although,
instead of being filled in with detached stitches, they are filled in with tent stitch. The use of some of the
more complicated reversible stitches is gone, although the marking cross is still prevalent. Now we also see
numerous alphabets executed in a variety of stitches with the rows separated by small decorative bands.
This sampler commemorates Jone Eldrig who died at age 48 in 1714, most likely Mary’s mother. This
sampler is reproduced from the original, which is in the Fitzwilliam Museum. Stitches used are satin,
double running, flame stitch, tent, Algerian eye, long-armed cross and reversible and marking cross.
Janet Fairgrave-1800 ($113 w/silk less
30% = $79.10) Janet stitched a very
typical Scottish sampler with its pansy
band, the "S" handled vases with tulips,
and the house with a fenced yard and
path. Another frequent feature to
Scottish samplers is the crowns with
family initials below them. The house is
one of three different styles of houses
used on samplers from Scotland. What
makes this sampler unique is the
coloring, the freehand birds, and the
sheep and peacocks along the bottom. It
seems that she unpicked her age, a more
common occurrence, as the young lady
didn't want her age to be known. The
verse is a well known one, "Favour is
deceitful and beauty is vain…" The
sampler is a reproduction from the Royal
Scottish Museum.
Stitches used are
cross-stitch, rice stitch, double running
stitch, satin, cross over one, chain stitch
and some freehand.
Mary Hay-1813 ($88 w/silk less 30% = $61.60) This delightful small Scottish sampler has the
Coat of Arms of the Fleshers as the central feature. To all sides of the shield are numerous family
initials and crowns which are so typical to Scottish samplers, as are the rabbits, dogs and peacocks.
Mary was christened 16 March 1798 in Cannongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She was the
daughter of William Hay and Mary Porteous. William Hay was a flesher, a trade organized to regulate
the meat industry. There were nine other children: Jean (1796); John (1800), Janet (1802); Peter (1804);
Betty (1806); Margaret (1811); Grizzel (1813); Alexander (1818); Robert (1821). Mary used cross stitch,
cross over one, double running, tent and some freehand satin stitches.

I love each of these, for different reasons. So many samplers, so little time!
Elizabeth Russell-1719 ($73 w/silk less 30% = $50.40) A charming, small
American sampler. Elizabeth stitched her sampler using marking cross, eyelet
over two threads of linen, double back, queen, Algerian eye, cross over one, and
flame stitch. The section at the bottom is worked in freehand and is quite easy to
do. You will be provided with a drawn-to-scale diagram that you will trace onto
the linen along with detailed instructions. 35c linen w/silks, 8” x 8.5”
Rebecca Budd-1801 ($79 w/silk less 30% = $55.30) Rebecca Budd,
of Mt. Holly, New Jersey, entered Westtown School, a Quaker school
when it first opened in May 1799. She was female student #16. Born in
1773 (though the Westtown record lists her age as 20 years when she
entered), Rebecca was the daughter of Stacy and Sarah Budd. Rebecca
was promoted to teacher at Westtown in November 1799, and taught
arithmetic, grammar, and writing until February 1803. In June 1803 she
married John Comly whom she had met while both were teaching at
Westtown, he from April 1801 to November 1802. Rebecca and John
Comly settled on their farm in Byberry Township, Pennsylvania, where
they raised their family and operated a school, Pleasant Hill Boarding
School, from 1804-1815. Rebecca Budd Comly died in Byberry in 1832.
Kitted with 40c linen, its size will be 13 x 11.4.
IV CF - Circa 1700 ($111 w/cotton less 30% = $77.70) This brilliant
German sampler was stitched in or around Nuremberg. The various pattern
blocks seem to have been a favorite on the samplers from this area. They are
found on numerous samplers in wonderful colors and a variety of stitches. All
these patterns could be used on upholstery, small bags, shoes, etc. The original
sampler was from the collection of Emma-Henriette Schiff van Suvero,
Staaliche Kunstgewerbe Museum in Vienna from 1939-2003 when it was
returned to the family. Stitches used are Cross-stitch, Hungarian, queen,
diamond queen, flame stitch, Algerian eye, tent, Roman, rice, and satin. Kitted
with 30c linen, it will measure 8.25” x 9”

Friday: Attic of Dreams 2 Button Bassinet Jackie and I invite all sampler stitchers to join
us for this, the second part of Attic of Dreams, together in class. Using Au Ver A Soie’s Trebizond
and silk Gimp threads, the start of a teeny bassinet front will be woven. This bassinet front
attaches with ribbons to a paneled hangable linen section that can be personalized with
included initials and or spot motifs and favorite stitches. The bassinet’s main function is to nest
a cross section of stitched band sampler created using the Attic of Dreams needleholder (Part 1)
color and stitches ~ it will wrap and bundle around a glass button-decorated decanter.
All supplies needed for stitching and finishing, including silk fiber, silk ribbon, 30-count

Saturday: Florine’s Fan-Fare Madam Florine, a French noblewoman, has
commissioned the students of the Mansarde Aiguille Academy (Attic Needle
Academy) to create the absolute portmanteau (reticule) to hold-safe an
exquisitely handcrafted Scrimshaw Palm-vane. Her instructions...wishes were:
The Portmanteau must be furbished with the best of silk fabrics. It must look
and feel beyond compare. It must fit her petite gloved hand. It must be worked
in only silken filaments and silk fragments. It can only use superb hand- colored
ribbons and trimmings. The colors must reflect femininity. Only then can and
must the worker present her work and name on this piece de resistance. After
critically reviewing all the work, Madam Florine was so impressed that she
granted the Academy the permission to recreate her Portmanteau Fan-Fare.
Sessions begin Saturday morning ~ see you in class as you work on recreating your ultimate reticule and Scrimshaw palm-vane. All supplies needed for stitching and finishing, including silk fiber and silk
hand-dyed fibers, silk taffeta check, silk ribbon, 34-count Legacy linen, detailed

Sunday: Queen M’s Pomander & Privy Purse A pomander, from the French pomme d’ambre
is a ball made of perfume. The Queen M’s pomander is two-sided opening, oval-global stitched
shapes that connect and hold a silk drawstring pouch for storage of herb fragments. The two
exterior oval global shapes are adorned and covered with stitched pomegranates and foliage using
vibrant rich tones of reds and pinks. Your treasured pomander stows in a privy purse constructed
using covered Hedebo/Dorset button rings. Jackie’s inspiration for this pomander’s privy purse is pulled from a purse she purchased in
Spokane, Washington while teaching there many years ago. The original is stitched in black; yours
will we worked to match the jewel tones of the pomander. The privy purse will be lined and
decorated with beads and ribbons and silk fabric. The work tray seen as a work in progress will be an optional item available to students only.
Complete kit includes all supplies needed for stitching and finishing: silk fiber and silk handdyed fibers, silk taffeta check, silk ribbon, 34-count Legacy linen and 32-count linen, detailed
instructions with color charts and color finishing photos. Monday: September Morning A September morning finds you
walking down a fashionable avenue in Paris, looking for a very special
object that you can take home with you. Tucked away in the display
window's corner, you eyes are drawn to a delicate carton. The carton
is decorated with soft watercolor styled flowers, leaves and vines.
You step inside the shop for a closer look. Excitement fills the air
as you recognize the carton to be a needlework box. The shop
attendant sees your interest and takes the needlework box to a
viewing area. The shop becomes silent. Your eyes follow the shape of
the box. It's a rectangular about 6" x 3" x 1 3/4"h. The slanted sides
are decorated with tiny silk stitches that resemble watercolor paints on
a warm antique-colored linen. The four box sides are attached to one
another and meet with panels at the top creating a functional box top
that ties with a wonderful vintage-looking silk ribbon. The ribbon is
untied and you notice that each of the four box sides are attached to
these linen panels to create the top of the box. With the ribbon
untied and the box top panels folded back, you view the silk-lined
interior. It is filled with tiny trinkets and tools. A thimble hides in one
corner, buttons and bows adorn a tufted mattress pincushion, and you
see a tiny needlebook with scissor minder. The box's silken
interior has silk pockets, and each is filled with tiny treasures, paper,
mementos and needle necessities. Holding your purchase, you walk to your hotel room, thinking of the needlework person who owned
this treasure before you and about the treasures you are planning to add to this beautiful September
Morning memory. Join Jackie in class as we celebrate our September Morning.
September Morning is worked on 32-count linen with hand-dyed and solid silk fibers. The interior
silk fabric provided in your kit is a luxurious taffeta linen. The vintage looking silk ribbon will be specially
dyed for this project. Color graphs and diagrams with colored instructions will be provided in class.

The Traveler This silken pouch was created for the traveling stitcher. It holds and stores
fibers, trinkets, and tools for transport. The entire pouch is created using luxurious taffeta
silk. The pouch features a stitched oval medallion worked on 32-count linen that is
appliquéd to the bottom section of the silken pouch. Soft watercolor panted flowers
worked as tiny silk stitches create flowers and vines with personalization area can be seen
on this medallion. The interior pockets of the pouch allow for additional storage of your
needle necessities.
The kit includes linen, silk lining fabric, silk fibers, finishing materials such as interfacing. Detailed color graphs, diagrams and colored instructions on how to work the
special joining stitch I created just for this project. Stitching and finishing needle.

Workshop participants only.

Cottage by the Sea Sewing Set ~ Workshop Fee $260
Cottage by the Sea Sewing Set was inspired by the beautiful and quaint
thatched roof cottages dotting the landscape of the British Isles, and the
climbing roses often found meandering around the doors, windows and
garden gate of the cottage. The set is designed to be housed in an
optional Nantucket Victorian basket* and consists of a thread holder; set
of 3 stacking biscornus/pincushions; ruler; scissors sheath; scissors fobs;
basket fob, and huswif with removable needlebook. The huswif contains
a mattress-style pincushion, scissors pocket for petite scissors, and a spot
to hold a small removable needlebook.
Specialty stitches used are Petite Stitch (over one), Tent Stitch,
Closed Herringbone, Nun Stitch, and Back Stitch. Below left is a color
diagram of the layout of each piece to give you an idea of how many
components there are, as well as the design elements to be stitched.
* The optional basket is $50, is very limited (15), but we will offer other
suggestions for alternate containers (boxes, etc.)
Kit contents include chart with full instructions for stitching and finishing
the project; 1 Fat Half of 40c or 36c Lakeside Linen's Vintage Maritime White; 12
+ full skeins of Belle Soie 12-strand overdyed silks;
size 26 and 28 tapestry needles; and a small piece of 32-count linen to practice
stitches with DMC floss.
Finishing kit contents include #12 Perle Cotton for cording, silk ribbon, 5
Mother of Pearl thread rings, 1 specialty glass rose button for large biscornu, 4
black glass faceted beads for fastening and finishing purposes, 1 glass lampwork
bead for fastening the huswif, 1 Fat Quarter of silk dupioni for finishing
purposes, Skirtex and cotton batting.

Friday night, 6 - 9 PM After supper Tempe folk artist Nancy Mills will present a lecture on the History of American Fraktur that will include its
interesting roots and history, its purpose, and information on its unique use of motifs and symbols. Then Vickie & Maegan Jennett of NeedleWorkPress will
present a beautiful sampler, “Out on a Limb,” that was designed based on a Fraktur in Vickie’s father’s collection.
Then Nancy will guide us through our Fraktur project, “Birds in Tree,” a very common Fraktur image, one that most people recognize, using
Nancy’s own design, on a paper-mâché box. As an added bonus, Nancy and Vickie collaborated to convert her art into a chart that can be placed inside
the box top, then finished to mount inside the lid or as a pincushion (the pincushion materials aren’t included in your box kit.) Your finished box will be
the perfect place to house your matching necklace. Nancy has many Fraktur/Folk Art related gift items that she will offer for sale in a small boutique at the

Pennsylvania German Fraktur Huswif (with Smalls)
Saturday & Sunday morning, 9 - Noon We will create an “Award of Achievement for Excellence in the Art of the
Needle.” The Pennsylvania German Fraktur styled folding huswif is stitched on your choice of 36- or 40-count linen. The
smalls include two entire sets, one set for the huswif (a mattress-style pincushion, needlebook, scissors fob and ruler) and the
other with the sewing stand. The pincushion for the top of the Shaker Sewing Stand may be finished as a biscornu or
dome-shaped fitted pincushion, your choice. The majority of “A Pennsylvania German Fraktur Huswif ” is stitched using
the cross stitch, but also includes the following specialty stitches: Bullion Stitch, Closed Herringbone, Algerian Eyelet (over
10), Petite Stitch, Rhodes Heart Stitch, Trellis Stitch, and Back Stitch. The chart for the huswif is offered in two versions,
one as a huswif as intended, the second is the huswif done as a sampler to frame and hang on the wall.
Kit Contents: Full kit which includes chart with instructions and stitch diagrams, piece of 32c linen to practice stitches with
DMC thread, full and partial skeins of Belle Soie silk, and a fat quarter of Lakeside linen in participant’s choice of 40- or 36count. It will also include all finishing materials needed to assemble the pieces, including silk Dupioni lining material,
Skirtex, buttons, Warm & Gentle cotton batting, DMC Perle for cording, and a CD with pictures of the finishing process
for future reference.

Mary Sophia’s Pennsylvania German Sewing Set
Mary Sophia’s . . . is inspired by the beautiful quilts and
traditional needlework motifs used by the Pennsylvania
Germans. The set is designed to be housed in an optional
miniature blanket chest* and consists of a quilt/thread
holder, a set of 3 stacking biscornus, ruler, scissors sheath,
and working needlebook. The working needlebook
contains a mattress-style pincushion, scissors pocket for
petite scissors, and linen needle pages. Specialty stitches
used are Petite Stitch (over one), Tent Stitch, Closed
Herringbone, Smyrna Cross, Nun Stitch, and Back
Stitch.

Mary Hammand 1732 ~ Here’s what Marsha says about this stunning
reproduction:
In the early eighteenth century samplers began to evolve from long vertical bands into more
rectangular shapes. They began to incorporate more pictorial and scenic images and scenes
such as those found on seventeenth century canvas and stumpwork pictures. Alphabets,
numerals and verses prevailed but the sampler evolved both as an exercise in needlework
technique as well as a vehicle for creative artistic expression. Common themes were scenes
based on biblical stories, but the popularity of bucolic, pastoral scenes increased. Mary
Hammand's sampler/canvas work piece melds these themes with a traditional sampler at
the center surrounded by pastoral images on either side of it.
It's interesting to note that she spelled the surname of her parents "Hamond" and
her surname "Hammand"---perhaps attributable to her lack of delight in learning?
Stitches used in the sampler include cross stitch over one and two threads of linen,
counted satin, back and eyelet.

I took photos of the beautiful silks in
sections, to try to capture the silken
beauty of this exquisite embroidery silk.
Here’s the Wisconsin Historical Society’s online description:
Dark linen ground; completely cross-stitched in silk threads of green, blue, red, white,
brown, and yellow; alphabet at top; pictoral border of greens, reds and tans: a girl with a
sheep at her feet in the lower right corner, a boy with a dog at his feet in the lower left
corner, trees and birds up the sides, solid floral border at top and bottom; some eyelet
stitches; inscriptions: "Gods Love and goodness/ has been shown in sending fro/m his
blessed throne his/ blessed only son to die that w/e the race might run. *MH*/The days
of our years are threescore years and/ ten and if by reason of strength they be foursco/re
years yet is their strength labour and sorrow/ for it is soon cut off and we fly away.

The second chart is delightful too, with a peak inside the inn. The witch is now

($86.50) are beautiful with the Lakeside linen we’ve
selected. A Stitcher’s Quarter will work on 40c
w/2-inch margins to stitch the entire sampler.

As we continue with our SAL, we are ready to embroider the beautiful floral Band
32, following Joanne’s detailed diagrams and instructions. Time permitting, move
on to Bands 33 - 37. I trust that you are enjoying embroidering this stunning
reproduction from Joanne Harvey.
The sampler reproduction kit includes 32c linen and 25 hues of DMC floss.
Full directions and illustrations are given for the different embroidery
techniques as found on the original sampler, and those include Cross Stitch
and its many variations, Queen Stitch, Algerian Eye, and accents of Double
Running. If you’ve never embroidered an Examplarery reproduction before,
you will find the pages and pages of stitch diagrams and charting almost as
helpful as having Joanne there instructing you personally. Kit $79
The elegant band format found on the sampler
embroidered by Ann Almy has just been
reproduced and taught at the recent Winterthur
Museum Symposium by Joanne Harvey/The
Examplarer y. From Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation’s textile collection and documented in
Bolton & Coe’s American Samplers, this sampler was
wrought in the “English style” and belongs to the
earliest group of Newport, Rhode Island
samplers worked between the 1720’s through the
late 1760’s. The bold central floral motif,
decorative bands, numerals, dividing bands, and
verses are repeated on other examples found
during this time frame. This important early
design was worked under a still unidentified
instructress.
Ann Almy was the daughter of William
Almy and Elizabeth Cranston born in 1722. She
married Walter Chaloner in Trinity Church on
July 28, 1743. He was commander of Fort
George and then High Sheriff of the British
Colony of Rhode Island. The Chaloners were
loyalists to the English crown and evacuated to
Nova Scotia, Canada as refugees of the American
Revolution. From there they moved to St. Johns,
New Brunswick, where he became Justice of the
Peace. Together they were parents of ten
children. Ann passed away in 1808 in Canada
and is buried in St. Johns.
Joanne is continuing her research on the
Chaloners, so stay tuned for more interesting
historical information! It promises to be very
intriguing!

Pat was visiting New York several weeks ago, and knowing that her needlework is always exquisite,
we asked to see anything that she had with her, and she reluctantly brought this in from the car,
primarily because it wasn’t finished! Well, there’s certainly enough for you to see the beauty and
elegance of this reproduction from The Essamplaire, “AB-1655” featuring two lovely double-running
bands, two bands worked in the Montenegrin stitch, two alphabets worked in double running, as
well as spot motifs in double running. All worked with only 3 colors. (chart $19)
Below, Jean D’s stunning “Maria Ceron” that she has finished through Part 4. Part
5, which is placed to the left of the above, of this reproduction is anticipated in late
November from Lindsay Lane Designs. Parts 1 - 4 are available now for $10 each.
Right, these sweet little sled ornaments continue to be very popular,
designs available from both Foxwood Crossings and Lizzie Kate. These
photographed were stitched by Dena usin silk threads, with sheen
so rich it looks like they’re stitched with beads.

~ I grew up a cheesehead and a Packer fan, and I still am both! Brother Jer
