Traditionally, one reads a chapter each Shabbat (Sabbath) afternoon from Pesah to Shavuot (Passover to Weeks/ Pentecost.) Ashkenazim (most European Jews) alRabbi Michael Rascoe so read a chapter each Shabbat afternoon from Shavuot to Rosh HaShanah (New Year.) The Talmud says, “One who desires to be pious and virtuous must study and practice the maxims of Avot.” (Babylonian Talmud, Bava Qama 30a.) (Continued on page 2) Join us for our summer activities! Temple Israel of Riverhead 1 July/August 2016 (Rabbi—continued from page 1) Why did Pirqei Avot attract the sages and our ancestors? The sayings. Besides wanting us to study, it also tells us to live life in a certain way. (Citations follow the prayer book.) We must study, but words are not enough; we must act on them (e.g. 3:12, 4:6.) Say little; do much (1:15.) The shy do not learn (so question) (2:6.) If you don’t keep increasing your knowledge, you actually decrease it (1:13.) One good deed (mitzvah) leads to another, while one misdeed (averah) leads to another (4:2.) The reward is proportionate to the effort (2:21, 5:25.) When love depends on achieving a certain goal, achieve that goal and love vanishes; but love that does not depend on a goal never vanishes (5:18.) In a place where there are no mentshen (worthy people; i.e. decent, honest, trustworthy,) strive to be one (2:6.) You are not obliged to finish the task, neither are you free to neglect it (2:21.) This summer, study and review the Pirqei Avot, for you will find everything in it (5:24.) You will treat others better, have a better relationship with God, and your life will have more meaning. Pray for the welfare of the government, for if people did not fear it they would swallow each other alive (3:2.) Be the first to greet someone (4:20) cheerfully (1:15, 3:16.) Staying awake at night, and thinking about trivial matters while traveling alone endangers your life (recall this before your next drive) (3:5.) Sleeping late, drinking alcohol midday, children’s prattle (either spending time loafing with them, or engaging in adult conversation similar to it,) loitering in the meeting places of the vulgar; all will ruin a person’s life (3:14,) as will envy, lust, and pursuing honor (4:28.) Don’t judge others until you stand in their situation (2:4.) Temple Israel of Riverhead Plant a Tree in Israel You can have a tree planted in Israel for a donation of $18. The Temple offers High Holy Day tickets at reasonable cost to those who support Temple Israel and Judaism by being or becoming dues-paying members. According to the Temple’s long-standing practice, we make High Holy Day seats available at no charge to needy individuals and to full-time college students. If a member or non-member of Temple Israel is demonstrably in financial straits, we willingly make special arrangements. To be courteous and fair to everyone, we ask that you consider the following information when ordering your tickets: 1. Each person attending High Holy Day services must have a ticket. Tickets are issued for specific seats (as in a theater,) and you are expected to occupy the seat designated on your ticket. 2. Tickets are non-transferable. 3. Inter-married spouse members and individual members may purchase tickets for themselves, their spouses, and children at the member rate. 4. Each year, all but a few seats are reserved in advance; please do not assume that an unoccupied seat is an available seat. 5. Tickets cannot be purchased for non-relatives at the member rates. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to the spirit of our ticket process. We are all working diligently to make our High Holy Day services meaningful and dignified. If you have further questions, please call the temple office at 631-727-3191 The High Holy Day Committee Temple Israel of Riverhead 7 July/August 2016 Temple Israel of Riverhead 8 July/August 2016 Temple Israel of Riverhead 9 July/August 2016 Temple Israel of Riverhead 10 July/August 2016 Will you sponsor the Yizkor Book, 5777? For the upcoming High Holy Days, we are again preparing our annual memorial book containing the Yizkor Memorial Service, special readings and meditations, and the names of our members’ departed loved ones. This Yizkor Book will be distributed to Temple Israel’s worshipers during Yom Kippur’s Yizkor Service and then used for memorial services conducted at other times during the year. You can sponsor the printing of this book with a $900.00 donation. The book will acknowledge your sponsorship and memorialize your loved ones. Temple Israel will be very grateful for your assistance. If you would like to sponsor this Yizkor Book’s printing, please call the temple office as soon as possible (631-727-3191). If you would like to inscribe your loved ones’ names in the booklet, please complete the Yizkor Booklet list and return it to the office by September 2nd. Temple Israel of Riverhead 11 July/August 2016 Mazel Tov to the Kaplans On June 11, 2016, family, friends, and Temple Israel congregation members gathered for the Bar Mitzvah of Joshua Kaplan. It was a memorable occasion, enjoyed by all. Josh’s flawless reading of his Haftorah was the highlight, accompanied by his leadership of the Saturday morning prayers. As his proud parents Caroline and Ned; and siblings Ariel and Sam looked on, Joshua then completed his performance with a timely and charming speech about his Bar Mitzvah preparation and goals for the future. Rabbi Rascoe was eloquent in his praise, as he guided Josh through this memorable occasion. Rabbi’s influence and work in preparing Josh thoroughly for this special day was evident throughout. The morning concluded with a lavish luncheon served downstairs in the social hall. The entire event will be long remembered by all who were fortunate enough to share in it. Sincere congratulations to Joshua and his family on his becoming a Bar Mitzvah! Shabbat on the Beach On the beautiful evening of June 17, Temple Israel and Greenport/North Fork Reform held Shabbat on the Beach in Southold. Services were very well attended. Note: space limitations prevented us from including pictures from the services. Visit us on the web to view the photos. Temple Israel of Riverhead 12 July/August 2016 A Weekend with Arie Kaplan The last weekend of June, Temple Israel experienced an extraordinary event, thanks to the generosity of Harley Abrams. The second annual Irwin B. and Florence K. Abrams Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton hosted writer, lecturer, and humorist Arie Kaplan. Friday evening, after a delicious dinner prepared by President Jaime Siegel, a large crowd enjoyed Arie’s fascinating memories of his life as a stand-up comic, screenwriter, and historian of Jewish participation in the creation of American popular culture. Arie kept the atmosphere humorous as he explained the sometimes dark history of Jewish humor, creativity, and storytelling in the United States. Saturday’s program was a presentation and discussion about Jews in film, past and present, and the filmmaking moguls: Warner Bros, Universal studios, Loew's, and RKO. Who knew that the four Warner brothers, salesmen and furriers, had to convince their father to sell the family horse in order to start their moving picture business? Best of all was Saturday’s Seudah Shlisheet, in which Arie passionately recounted how his own involvement in the creation of comic books led to his discovery of the Jewish community that pioneered the art form decades before. Listeners were treated to insightful theories on how Jewish beliefs and experience informed the creation of America’s most beloved comic book heroes, from Superman to the Incredible Hulk. After the Havdalah service, Arie signed copies of his latest book, From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books. Sincere thanks to Harley Abrams for finding and sponsoring this exceptional speaker.
