Moja Sokobanja
Sokobanja is located in the central part of southeastern Serbia, at the
latitude of 43° 63’ N and longitude of 21° 87’ E, at an altitude of 400 m.
It is situated in а valley, surrounded by several medium-height
mountains: Ozren (1174 m) on the south, Rtanj (1560 m) on the
north, Devica on the south-east (1116 m), Slemen (1099 m) and
Krstatac (1069 m) on the east and Bukovik (894 m) and Rozanj (897
m) on the west. The river Moravica which flows through Sokobanja
makes the Bovan gorge in the western part of the valley.
Sokobanja is 30 km away from the E-75 highway and the main railroad, which are connecting Belgrade and Nis. Sokobanja is 230 km
away from Belgrade and the airport “Nikola Tesla” and 58 km away
from Niš and the airport “Emperor Constantine“. It is also connected with the Timok region by the roads that go through Boljevac and
Knjaževac. Municipality of Sokobanja occupies the area of 525 km²
and has around 18.000 inhabitants and the town itself has 8.500.
Sokobanja nowadays is a spa and climate health resort, known
beyond the Serbian boundaries. At its healing springs throughout
history the Roman spa and Turkish bath were built first, and than
Milošes bathroom, which is now developing into a modern health
and recreation center.
By the order of Prince Miloš Obrenović, the first expert analysis of
Sokobanja’s thermal water and its healing effects was carried out
in Vienna in 1834, and the first officially sent guest, with a written
recommendation (voucher), arrived in Sokobanja on the 8th of
June in 1837 (by the old calendar), which indicates that Sokobanja
has the longest tradition of organized tourism on the territory of
ex-Yugoslavia.

At the end of the 19th and the begining of the 20th century,
Sokobanja was an elite summer resort and the meeting place of
Serbian aristocracy and bohemians. The regular guests of Sokobanja were well-known writers, actors, artists: Branislav Nušić,
the creator of the famous catchword: “Sokobanja, Sokograd, one
comes old and goes young”, Stevan Sremac, Isidora Sekulić, Ivo
Andrić, Meša Selimović, Miloš Žutić.
Sokobanja is one of the leading spas in Serbia regarding the health
tourism and one of the most visited tourist centers in Serbia.

Natural
attractions
What is it that separates Sokobanja from other tourist resorts in
Serbia? It is its rich and unique nature - mountains, rivers, lakes,
waterfalls, caves, air... The greatest attractions are located in the
part which was declared a park of special natural characteristics.
Mountains
Mountain adventure offer includes Rtanj, Ozren, Bukovik and Devica, the four mountains that surround Sokobanja valley.
Rtanj (1560 m) is 18 km away from Sokobanja, and on the north
side of Sokobanja valley. You can actively participate in the discovery of the mystique of this mountain, try to find out the truth

of salvation, the basis for aliens, an oasis of health... Take part in
the conquest of Šiljak, the peak of Rtanj, either by walking or by

Ozren (1174 m) is located in the southern part of Sokobanja valley
and it is the most wooded mountain in Serbia and is an endless
source of oxygen. A large part of the mountain has been declared
a natural park of special value. The mountain has many picnic
places for full day stay. It is five kilometers away from the center
of Sokobanja. Don’t miss the highest waterfall in Serbia, Ripaljka
(40m), a small lake and picnic place Kalinovica.

Devica is in the southeastern part of Sokobanja’s valley, according
to stories, it is Sokobanja’s protector, the Holy Virgin mountain,
by which it got its name. It is rich in flora and fauna. At its base
springs the clean Moravica river. Tourists with experienced guides
can directly enjoy the benefits of nature, especially forest fruits.
Here the most beautiful aroma have wild strawberries and raspberries.
Bukovik is in the west of the valley, 12 km away from Sokobanja,

Rivers and lakes
The river Moravica is a unique geo-ecosystem which is 60.4 km
long. The Moravica is the right confluent of the South Morava
river, and it springs at the base of Devica. It occurs in the form
of a river flow, generated from a large number of underground
springs, which are visible as small vortexes. The surrounding is
arranged as a picnic sight. The Moravica forms the Bovan lake,
in the western part of the valley. The river is rich in brown trout
and white fish: beovica, chub, and carp. Tributaries of the river
Moravica are clear mountain rivers and streams, which are the
habitat of river crabs.
Bovan Lake is an artificial accumulation, made by damming the
river Moravica in 1977. It is about 10 km away from Sokobanja.
There are several arranged beaches both on Sokobanja’s and
Aleksinac’s side. It is about 8 km long and its maximum depth is
about 50 m, near the dam. It is suitable for swimming, fishing and
picnics, and on the beaches, near the village of Bovan, you can
rent pedal boats for great enjoyment on the water. In recent time,
sailing regattas are organized on the lake, mainly in the spring and
autumn months.
Vrmdža Lake is situated at the base of Rtanj Mountain, about 15
km away from Sokobanja, and 3 km from the village of Vrmdža.
It is a wonderful place for relaxation, fishing and picking wild berries and medicinal herbs. The village can be reached by an asphalt
road, from which you can get to the lake by a gravel road. In the
village of Vrmdža, there are the remains of the ancient Vrmdža
Town and the church of the Holy Trinity.
Waterfall Ripaljka is the first monument of nature in our country,
which is protected by low in the 1948. The waterfall is formed on
a small river Gradasnica and is one of the highest in Serbia. It consists of 11 sections with a total height of about 40 m. Height of the
highest sections is 11 m, below it is the section which is 5 m high
, while the others are smaller and range from 0.5 to 2 m. Named
after a local expression which means to jump. The waterfall has
the most water in the spring after the melting of snow and ice,
and at least during the summer months, especially if the drought.
There is a picnic area above the waterfall with tables and benches
for rest and a place for barbecue.

Picnic sites
“Vrelo-Borići” is the well-known picnic site, 300 m away from the center
of Sokobanja. Once it was an elite place, where many famous people gathered: writers, actors, artist, politicians and members of the royal family
Karađorđević. Vrelo is connected by stairs with the site Borići, which is in the
upper part arranged for picnics and recreation and the lower part is for campers. The visitors can also see the memorial fountain of Hajduk Veljko Petrović
and the open-air stage “Vrelo“.
Park-forest “Čuka 2” is located near the Specialized Hospital Sokobanja, in the
settlement Čuka 2. The evergreen forest, health path, children’s playground,
wooden benches and the beautiful scenery are the main attractions of this picnic
site. There is a great view of the town and Rtanj Mountain from the park. It is
convenient for different sports activities such as badminton and frisbee, picnics
and walks in the beautiful natural environment.
“Lepterija” is the most known and most visited picnic site in Sokobanja It is located 2 km away from the center of Sokobanja. By a local legend, it was named
after a girl who took her life away because of forbidden love, by jumping with her
beloved Župan from the cliff into the river Moravica. You can reach the site by an
asphalt road, or by a picturesque forest path. Nearby is the church devoted to the
Birth of the Holy Virgin and the natural phenomenon “Holy Virgin in the rock”. The
medieval fortress “Sokograd” is 500 m away from Lepterija and it can be reached
by a forest path.
Picnic site “Ozren” is about 5 km away from Sokobanja. It includes a large park
with sports fields, a playground, an artificial lake, a restaurant, a waterfall “Mala
Ripaljka” and an arranged picnic area. Nearby is Ripaljka, the highest waterfall in
Serbia (total height 40 m), which has been declared the first Serbian natural monument in 1948.
Picnic places “Očno” and “Kalinovica” are 2 km away from picnic site Ozren. The
first is famous for the “Stone of Love”, a lonely rock in the middle of a big field, which
is a symbol of eternal love. The second is a glade, surrounded by beech and pine
forest, and it is known for its cold water. Around the spring, there are benches and
tables and arranged places for the barbecue.
Climate
The climate of Sokobanja is moderate continental, with a
tendency of moving towards the mountain type as the altitude increases. The main climate characteristics of this area
are cold and sharp winter, warm and sunny summer and
the autumn that is warmer than spring. There are almost
no misty days during the year. There are no water and air
pollutants in Sokobanja`s environment. Besides, “the rose
of the winds” which forms above the valley brings the fresh
and clean air, giving the special contribution to its quality.
The air rich in negative ions contributes to the overall recovery of the organism and is particularly suitable for the
treatment of respiratory problems and stress.

Spring “Šopur” is located on the road to the village of Jezero, about 10 km away
from Sokobanja. The spring is surrounded by beech forest, and around it there is an
arranged place for barbecue. From Šopur, folowing the forest paths, you can reach
the peak “Oštra Čuka“ (1075 m), from which you have a magnificent view of the valley
and Rtanj.
Spring of the river Moravica is a pleasant place for rest and picnics, near the crystalclear lake where the river Moravica emerges. It is located in a place called Vrelo-Istoci,
at the base of Devica Mountain, 12 km away from Sokobanja towards Knjaževac. The
spring itself is a natural phenomenon because it occurs in the form of a river flow generated from a large number of underground springs. Nearby is St. Elijah’s church, Marko’s
Cave and a trout pond.

Medieval Fortress Sokograd was built at the end of
13th and the beginning of 14th century, on the foundations of an old Roman fortress (from 4th-6th century). However, according to some data, the medieval
fortress existed at the time of Stefan Nemanja`s reign,
when the members of religious cult called Bogumils
were exiled and during that occasion the town was
ruined for the first time. Later it was mentioned in
the biography of Despot Stefan Lazarević. It was ruined in the fight for the Turkish throne between Sultan Musa and the rebel Hamuz beg, in 1413. It is located 2 km south-east from the center of Sokobanja,
on a hill above the canyon of the river Moravica.
History
In addition to the spectacular Sokograd, which is the most famous
archaeological site, Sokobanja municipality is full of sites and historical monuments, and some of them seem quite impressive.
Known throughout the country, many of these buildings and features date back several hundred years ago, but they are still in an
attractive condition. The most impressive are different architectural styles with details which cause a lot of attention.
The oldest traces of human settlements in Sokobanja originate
from the Paleolithic period (tools, tool parts and the remains of
the booty from the cave in Stranjak, in the area of Čitluk), and the
Neolithic period (the remains of pottery and tools from the Ozren
cave and Trapovo on Rtanj).
From the period of Emperor Justinian there are towns-fortresses
(Sokograd, Vrmdža, Bovan), which were part of Serbian medieval
state, until 1413 when they were destroyed.
Evlija Čelebija, the Turkish author who wrote about his travels,
was the first person who mentioned the healing features of Sokobanja springs, describing Turkish bath in 1663.
This bath was, after liberation from the Turks in 1834, restored
and enlarged by Serbian Prince Miloš Obrenović. In 1808 Hajduk
Veljko liberated Sokobanja from the Turks in the First Serbian uprising, and called it his Banjica. On the 8th of June, 1837 (the old
calendar) from the office of Prince Miloš in Kragujevac, a recommendation was written for major Lazarević, who was sent to Sokobanja to use hot water. This recommendation (voucher) was
used to mark the starting point of health tourism of Sokobanja
since the 21st of Jun (the new calendar).
In the second half of the XIX and the beginning of XX century,
until World War Two, Sokobanja became the meeting place of famous scientists, writers, artists and bohemians: Ivo Andrić, Branislav Nušić, Isidora Sekulić, Stevan Sremac, Jovan Cvijić, Meša
Selimović etc. who were regular guests of Sokobanja.
Near the village of Vrmdža (12 km away from Sokobanja), in the valley of the river Pakleš, there
are remains of the old Vrmdža town, which is considered to be “Latin”. The fortress dates from the
roman period between 4th and 6th century, probably in the time of reign of the Emperor Justinian.
Later the town was mentioned in the 14th century,
as the settlement of noblemen. It was ruined in
the 15th century, in 1413.
Here are some of the most important landmarks, historic buildings and monuments that are essential in tourist visits:
Turkish bath “Hamam” is located in the central park
and it was built by the Turks, on the foundations of
Roman thermae, in the 16th century. It was reconstructed for the first time in 1834, by an order of
Prince Miloš Obrenović, and the last time in 2005.
It is the only Turkish bath in function in Serbia. It
is also known because one part of the famous film
“Zona Zamfirova” was made there.
“Milošev konak“ is located in the center of Sokobanja, at the marble promenade. It was built by
Prince Miloš Obrenović, in the first half of the 19th
century, for his administration.
The church devoted to The Holy Transition of God,
situated in the center of Sokobanja, was built in
1894, in the Serbian-Byzantine style. It was built
by Italian builders under the direction of architect
Svetozar Ivačković, but the author of the iconostasis is unknown. Initiator of the construction and
a great donor was the head of the Serbian church
Mihajlo, who was born in Sokobanja. There is his
bust in the port of the church. Apart from the
church, he built the primary school in 1894, and he
founded the first ecological society in 1895 named
“Society for Improving an Embellishing Sokobanja
and its Surrounding“.

Church devoted to the Assumption of the Holy
Virgin is located in the village of Jošanica 15 km
away from Sokobanja and it is the oldest church in
this part of Serbia. It dates from the 11th century,
it is built of stone, with an impressive iconostasis, which is partially restored and preserved. The
most striking icon is an icon of Jesus in his three
ages, as a boy, a man (at the time of suffering)
and the third most interesting as an old man. The
priests have interesting explanation for this icon.
St. Elijah’s church is located in the village of Vrelo,
12 km away from Sokobanja towards Knjaževac.
It was built in the mid-19th century, by the initiative of Princess Persida Karađorđević, who donated 18 ducats for its construction.
The monastery Jermenčić was built in 14th century.
According to the legend the monastery was built
by Armenian monks, who found their sanctuary on
Ozren, running for their lives during the Turkish invasion. The church of this monastery, which is preserved, is devoted to Holy Archangels Michael and
Gabriel. It is 8 km away from Sokobanja.
Art Gallery - Legacy of Milun Mitrović was opened
on the 21st of June 2001, at the initiative of Sokobanja’s painter Milun Mitrović, who donated over
150 paintings to Sokobanja. Every year, this Gallery
hosts a large number of exhibitions by acclaimed national and international artists. Milun Mitrović was
one of the founders of the Art Colony “Sokograd”. He
passed away in 2010 in Sokobanja.
Homeland museum is located in a building constructed in the 19th century. It was built in the old Serbian
style and with minor changes the building has fully
retained its original appearance. The collection has
exhibits from the fields of archeology, ethnology and
history, from the Roman to modern time. In front of
the museum there is an amphitheatre, where the
program of the Cultural Summer takes place.
Ethno corner “Grudonjske Watermills” is located in
the settlement Gradašnica (2 kilometers away from
the center), on a small river. It has two mills, which
are more than two centuries old. The large mill was
turned into an ethno kitchen, where each visitor
can prepare various dishes from this area, according to traditional recipes, with the help of instructors of ethnological workshop “Etnos”. The second,
smaller mill, will be converted into traditional crafts
workshop. In the yard, there is a small amphitheater,
where the programs related to the history and tradition of Sokobanja’s area take place.
Homeland museum in Jošanica is placed in the
churchyard, next to the churches of St. Demetrius
and the Assumption of the Holy Virgin. The museum’s building is the former Parish home, which
dates from the 19th century. Museum has exhibits
from the fields of history and ethnology, and it is
placed under state protection.
Ethno museum in Vrmdža, opened on Easter 2010,
is located in the building of the Parish home. There
is a permanent exhibition of folk costumes, pottery, textiles and tools. Exhibits were collected by
villagers of Vrmdža, Mužinac and Trgoviste. Visitors can see the entire process of making the national costumes in the traditional way.
Sokobanja area is known for its churches and temples, and their remains, near the villages, on Krstatac
and Devica, and also for memorial fountains dedicated to important historical figures: Hajduk Veljko
Petrović (in the park Vrelo-Borići), Ljuba Didić (in
the center) and Prince Miloš Obrenović (5 km аway
from Sokobanja towards Aleksinac).
In memory of the well-known persons who visited
Sokobanja, there are the busts of Stevan Sremac,
Branislav Nušić, Isidora Sekulić and Ivo
Andrić. In the central park there is a bust of
local partisan hero Aleksa Markišić.

Aqua Park Sokobanja is an amusement water complex built in
2011th on the area of 16 000 square meters. Situated in an attractive location for sports and recreation center in Podina Sokobanja. The complex can accommodate up to 2000 visitors. Equipped
with semi-olympic swimming pool, a swimming area for children
and adults, as well as a swimming pool with three slides. Sokobanja water park is an ideal place for enjoyment of the entire family. A number of accompanying facilities and a rich program of activities of Sokobanja Aqua Park will make your stay in Sokobanja

The mountains that surround Sokobanja are a big challenge for
hobbyists and also for professional alpinists. Ozren, Devica, Rtanj,
Krstatac, Bukovik i Rožanj offer vast terrains for this kind of sport.

Sokobanja’s hunting area, managed by Hunters Association
“Soko” and Public Company “Serbian Woods”, is rich in small and
large game. Passionate hunters can hunt for rabbit, pheasant,
partridge, quail, woodcock, wild boar, roe, deer, wolves, foxes and

Tourist offer of Sokobanja is completed by various sports tournaments, which are held throughout the year. The most known
are “Futsal Night Tournament”, “August in August” (basket, beach
volleyball, futsal), sailing regattas and cycling tours. Tourists
and athletes have at their disposal footbal stadium “Bata Nole”
capacity of 1,500 spectators, 3 footbal fields, mini pich field, 5
sport facilities for various sports, 4 indoor pools, 4 tennis courts,
shooting range, bowling alley... The terrains surrounding Sokobanja are the right place for those who love sport challenges and

for extreme sports: diving, mount biking, free climbing, tracking,

noble fish species: catfish, perch, carp, grass carp, chub, perch,

Wellness and Spa
Sokobanja is known for its healing thermo-mineral springs, which
are compared to waters of Bad Gastein in Austria. From ancient
times, people from this area, both poor and reach, rulers and
their subjects, were looking for a cure for their hardships and
diseases, by using the miraculous Sokobanja’s waters. Apart from
their healing effects, these springs refresh, rejuvenate, and relax
both body and soul, contributing to your vitality and good mood.
There are six thermo–mineral springs in Sokobanja which are
used for curing different types of diseases.
Central thermal bath “Hamam” has two hyperthermal springs:
“St. Archangel” with the temperature of 43°C and “Preobraženje”
with the temperature from 43.8 to 53°C.
Indications: degenerative rheumatism, chronic and inflammatory
rheumatism and post – traumatic conditions and conditions after
injuries.
Interesting facts:
Bath “Banjica” has two hypothermal springs: “Banjica I” with water temperature of 27.8°C and “Banjica II”- water the temperature of 28.9°C.
Indications: neuralgia, radiculitis, neurosis, psychoneurosis and
conditions after injuries of peripheral nerves.
Jošanica spa has five thermo–mineral springs: sulphur water,
iron I and II, red and stomach water. These waters are classified
as oligomineral earth-alkaline hypothermal waters with temperature between 18 and 22°C.
Indications: chronic intestine, stomach (duodenum and stomach
ulcer) and gall diseases, conditions after surgical interventions on
intestine, stomach and gall bladder, chronic bladder and urinary
infections, kidney inflammations, kidney sand and stone, diabetes, skin diseases and eczema, and chronic and inflammatory
rheumatism.
Curing in Jošanica spa is completed with healing mud.
“Pijaca” is a hypothermal spring with sulphur–hydrogen smell
and with water temperature of 32.4°C. It is used for healing skin
diseases.
Specialized Hospital “Sokobanja” offers spa guests different wellness and fitness programs, with the aim of preserving and improving health.
“Zdravljak” is a mild mineralized spring with water temperature
of 14.5°C.
Wellness program is recommended for all persons who suffer
from chronic stress, and the ones who wish to improve their
health and mood.

or woman’s swimming-pool, or in the original bath which

Next to the bath there is a natural inhalatorium, which contains

Manifestations
First accordion of Sokobanja
International festival “First accordion of Sokobanja” is a cultural
manifestation and also a competition that has been held since
1962. Many thousands of competitors passed through this festival, which is known and appreciated both in the country and
abroad. Many festival winners are nowadays eminent experts,
academy professors, big orchestra directors and masters of accordion. Semifinals are held in July, and the finals take place at the
open-air stage “Vrelo“, at the beginning of August.
Marathon of Wishes
A unique manifestation in the world, which attracts a huge number of visitors every year. Participants have a task to walk through
the most colorful landscapes of Sokobanja and visit a few destinations, which, according to the local beliefs, make wishes come
true. On each of the mentioned places participants collect coupons, in order to participate in the prize game. Also a rich cultural
and amusement program is organized for the visitors. It is held
every year, during the first weekend in September.
Golden hands
This is a competition that has been held since 1983, where people
compete in preparing old, almost forgotten dishes, old craft skills
and traditional handicrafts. Many visitors can get advice from kind
housewives about making some traditional dish and they can also
try some of the specialties. It is held every year on the 14th of July.
Art Colony “Sokograd”
The colony has been held since 1996 and it gathers artists from
all over the country and abroad, who donated Sokobanja around
200 valuable pieces of art. The colony’s pieces of art are exposed
in public institutions in Sokobanja. It is being held every year in
September, and during the work of the present colony, people
can see the exhibition of the last year’s colony.
St John the Herb picker
Traditional manifestation that has been held since 1994 in the
period from 2nd until 15th of July. Many tourists come to Sokobanja especially for this occasion, in order to participate in the herb
picking on the slopes of Ozren, Rtanj and Devica, in the presence
of professional guides. Besides these tours, the manifestation includes expert lectures about medicinal herbs, quiz shows, Herb
parade and Fair of Medicinal Herbs, Honey and Healthy Food.
Besides mentioned manifestations, other cultural and amusement events are held every year during the summer tourist season from 21st of June until 21st of September: theatre plays and
monodramas performed by Sokobanja’s amateur theatre and
other theatre groups from all over the country, performances of
cultural – artistic clubs, concerts of famous singers and bands,
summer cinema, different exhibitions, expert lectures, literary
evenings and other events.
