Volume 10, Issue 3 February 2004 Vienna High School Vienna, Illinois Alden Howard Qualifies for Nationals By Chelsea Blankenship Alden Howard qualiied for Nationals in high school rodeo on October 10, 2003, in Greenville, Kentucky. Alden scored nine points in bareback riding (bucking horse) which put him in second placefortherodeoandplacedhim second in the State. The Nationals will be held in Gillete, Wyoming, July 19-25, 2004. Alden has been participating inrodeoforfouryears.Hisirst three years he just rode bulls, but for the past year he has ridden both bulls and broncs. With only being on six broncs, it was a real accomplishment when he qualiied for Nationals on his irst ride in the competition. When it comes to bareback riding, there is no way to prepare yourself.Itislikesittingontopof astickofdynamitegettingready to explode. The ride only lasts foreightsecondsandduringthat short ride, there is no time to be scared; the horse controls you. You don’t know whether he is going to spin left, right, or just go straight. All you can do is ride like it’s your last, which is what Alden did. For those eight seconds, nothing was on his mind but him and the horse. Alden’s hard work and determinationpaidoff.Heislooking forwardtohistriptotheNational Competition.Aldensaid,“Itwill be a good experience going out there and competing against some of the best in the country, just Alden making his qualifying ride with 9 points to put him in second going out there and having fun, place. doingwhatIlove.” 2003-2004 VHS Homecoming Results By Chelsea Blankenship Queen Sarita and King Derek Derek Meyer and Sarita Faulkner were crowned the 2003-2004 Homecoming King and Queen on December 6, 2003 at VHS Homecoming. Fair TradeCoffeeisaconceptinwhich the producer and the consumer can interact without the American coffee industry. This way, the farmers can sell their coffee directly to consumers without havingtosellittoaspeciiccoffee company. Like most other businesses, coffee manufacturers are trying tomaximizetheirproits.Bydoingso, thecoffeedistributorsare capitalizingovertheproits. The problemcoffeefarmersarefacing is that when they do receive compensation for the coffee they’ve grown, it’s not hardly any money. Rarely do they receive enough pay to support themselves, not to mentiontheirfamilies. Unfortunately, the origin of most coffee grown is that of thirdworld countries, which only worsens the economy in that particular country.UnlikefarmersinAmerica, where you may have several differentcrops, thesecoffeegrowers spend their entire growing season on growing only coffee. They do not have enough supplies nor do they have the money to support more than one crop. These farmers continue to live in poverty their entire lives. The FairTradeCoffeeCommitteeis trying to stop the mistreatment ofthecoffeefarmersbyraising awareness about purchasing Fair TradeCoffee. All four members of the committee are VHS Spanish Club students. This committee has immediately taken action to help those being victimized by thecoffeeindustry.Indoingso, they hope to see some results quickly. The committee was previously involved in a letter writing campaigntocoffeemanufacturersinregardtothetreatmentof coffeefarmers.Theletterswere written to such companies as Millstone Coffee, Folgers, and manymore.Asaresultofthis letter writing campaign along with others, Millstone Coffee has agreed to only sell Fair Trade Coffee. Other committee members, Ariel Adams, Julie Farmer, and Megan Gerdes, were introduced to the conflict during the 2003-2004 school year. “Millstone selling only Fair Trade Coffee has inspired us to work harder and try to achieve moresuccess.Whileitfeelslike Page 2 February 2004 a victory, it is only one small battleinthiswarofcoffeesales,” said Leslie Mcginnis. “We have bigplansforourfuturewiththis cause, and with the help of surrounding communities, maybe we canraiseawarenessandsalesfor Millstone.” FormoreinformationonFair TradeCoffee, youmayseeMrs. Jonesorafairtradecoffeecom- Fair Trade Coffee Committee from left: Mrs. Jones, Leslie McGinnis, Megan Gerdes, Julie Farmer, and Ariel Adams. “Love is Never Having To Say You’re Sorry” Happy Valentines Day! Page 6 February 2004 News By Leslie McGinnis Is there anything that the Vienna High School band has not done this year? (Besides milkingthechickens, ofcourse.) From concerts, taking bats, and marching into ditches, to dancing on peoples’ lawns and pep band, they do it all. Aftermanypractices, bothduring schoolandafter, themarchingband beganwithaloudcryof“Don’t judgemeiffudnnntknnwmiiii!”on September 1st at the Wonder Water Parade. The band continued to dance its way through SEMO, Murray, and Anna while they played “Blister in the Sun”. They even made a special stop in Christopher that was complete with a dreary night, costumes, and rain. The pep band debuted its new style on November 28th. This year, afterplayingthesamesongs since about 1980, they had almost completely new music. The new lineupincludedsuchfavoritesas “Peter Gunn” and “Somebody to Love”. Of course, this was no problem since the pep band is good enough that you could conduct them with your elbows. “Woosh!” The Christmas concert was on December 8th at 7:30pm. If you weren’t there, you missed quite a show, even with the hot tub smell. The madrigal singers sang, stands were kicked in rage, and the concert band played. Beginning with an upbeat march, the audience was guided through several festive songs including “AChristmasFantasyin¾Time” and a fabulous arrangement of “The First Noel”. All songs were played right the irst time, ofcourse. If you’ve managed to miss seeingthebandsofar, makesure and stop by the Spring Concert, which is scheduled for May 6th. Don’t worry, though, the band will be playing with the lights on. The songs will include “Blue Ridge Saga”, (no, not the video game system,) “Covington Square,” which has a light, British sound, and “The Light Eternal,” the grandinale. The performances were held in the commons, whichwastransformed into a medieval dining hall, complete with a massive amount of candles, full costumes, a catered meal, and a magniicent chandelier. To explain exactly what a Madrigal is, it could simply be explained as a Christmas party thrown by King Arthur himself. It includes dancing, singing, the occasional sword ight, and, ofcourse, sorceryand bewitchment. Under the direction of Jarod Shumaker, the cast of nearly thirty students had their work cut outforthemandtheirhandsfull of tasks. Thestudents didalot oftheworkbythemselves, with somehelpfromtheirparents. The jobsrangedfromthesimpletable decorating all the way to covering the windows in the commons with sheetsofblackpaper.Everything was done just perfectly, and the work was very much appreciated and enjoyed by the sold-out crowd.
