Temecula Today | November 2007 pg 3 Chamber News Chamber Calls Upon Legislature to Support Water Bond for Businesses and Region California’s water infrastructure has endured water demand increases and is now susceptible to disasters like earthquakes, drought and other major catastrophes. And over the past three decades, no significant new water infrastructure has been built to keep up with our growing times. The water supply needs to be protected in order to safeguard the drinking water and how it’s being delivered throughout California. A water infrastructure bond should provide the funding necessary to address the following critical issues: Last month the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce supported legislation to increase more access to water for the region. H.R. 31 (Issa) will allow the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD), to participate in the design, planning, and construction of permanent facilities that are needed to establish recycled water distribution and waste water treatment for EVMWD’s jurisdiction. A small step, although positive, towards updating the water infrastructure of southern California. Now the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce is urging local legislators to support the placement of a water bond on the February ballot. The much needed bond is coming at a time when the Delta, the central hub for the state’s water, needs upgrading to meet water demands throughout the state because of population growth. “By supporting the federal legislation last month, we felt compelled to support the placement of a water bond on the ballot to ensure water keeps flowing to our region,” stated Alice Sullivan, President and CEO of the Chamber. “It is simple: if the water flow is reduced or even worst our water infrastructure is not dependable, businesses throughout our region will be heavily affected and region will suffer as a whole,” continued Sullivan. · Infrastructure Improvements in the Delta. The Delta supplies drinking water for 25 million Californians, hundreds of thousands of businesses and 750,000 acres of farmland. The Delta, which is extremely susceptible to natural disasters, is in desperate need of improvements to ensure reliable transport of water throughout the state. If there were an earthquake, for example, it is estimated Delta water would be curtailed for two years, choking all who depend on it. Immediate action and long term improvements are needed now. · Build Additional Storage Facilities. Temperatures are predicted to rise in the coming years, reducing the state’s snow pack and water supply. We need to invest in water storage facilities now to capture water and ensure that we have available supply of safe, quality water in dry years to meet the needs of residents, businesses, agriculture and the environment. · Improve Water Quality. A clean, safe, reliable source of drinking water is a necessity of life. Already, water quality in the Central Valley has suffered because of drought conditions and overdraft of underground aquifers. Depleting supplies elsewhere in the state puts other residents at risk not to mention planning for the half a million new residents in California each year. This seminar is presented by the Business Development Resource Committee. Word of Mouth Advertising by Wes Schaeffer Nestled near the shadows of downtown Nashville, between government housing and $295k condos, is a 127-year-old vine-covered time machine. From the scuffed sidewalk you’ll see a Victorian building with the sign “Monell’s”. It’s apparently a code known to chrononauts. Monell’s cooks authentic Southern meals, served family-style, with a metal detector at the door searching for cell phones. She’ll kindly ask you to leave yours at the desk: a small sacrifice for atmosphere. When the first bite passed my lips I was transported back to 1970s Baton Rouge, LA. The food, the smiles, the ambiance snuck me back to family reunions where, in between bites of fried chicken and pecan pie, I was continuously told how I was “growing like a weed”. I can hear their soothing, mangrove-infused drawls even now…and it brings a smile to my face. I never knew the secret recipe to time travel was kept in a kitchen in Nashville, TN. How did Monell’s get me to tell their story? By meeting all of the three keys to generating word-of-mouth advertising. 1) Architectural: the 127-year old building, wooden floors, brick fireplace was original “Southern-ese”. 2) Generosity: unlimited portions served family style. 3) Kinetic: their friendly, smiling, welcoming attitude was evident everywhere I looked. Do you conduct your business in a way that a stranger would tell the tale? How does your front desk greet new callers and visitors? Are your salespeople desperate to push the “flavor of the month” or do they take the time to consult with your prospects? Does your staff know how to sell on value or merely on price? You can afford word-of-mouth advertising. Wes Schaeffer is “The Sales Whisperer”. The motivated may reach him at (951) 200-3088 or [email protected]. Attention CPA’S: Do you Need to Train Your Employees? In the quarterly meeting with Employment Development Department (EDD), James Counts CPA, Liaison to EDD for CalCPA Committee on Taxation, received an update on the Employer Training Fund (ETP). Barry Worthington from ETP stated that unlike prior years the ETP actively seeks out small businesses that have training needs and makes it easy for them to apply and receive funds for training. The ETP has a program for small businesses (less than 100 employees) that will pay $22 per hour per employee for training. During the training as long as employees receive the state normal minimum hourly rate or more the employer has no requirements for the amount paid the employee. Once the employee finishes training the employer is required to pay a certain minimum wage amount to the employee. This wage amount depends on the county the employee works in and if they are a new hire or a retrain- pg 6 Temecula Today | November 2007 ee. These wage amounts are between $10.13 to $13.51 per hour. Also there is a requirement that the worker be employed by the employer for 90 days after the training. This requirement can be waived in certain circumstances. An application must be submitted and approved by ETP (this process can take as little as one week). The $22 per hour per employee paid to the employer is to cover the cost of the training program for the employee and up to 15% can be used to cover administrative costs. In a question I asked of the presenter if I as a CPA performed the training for my employees then I am not paying anyone to do the training. He indicated that it would be considered that I was worth the $22 her hour per trainee so thus substantiating the costs for the reimbursement. www.temecula.org City News City of Temecula Public Safety Expo and K9 Trials Scheduled for December The City of Temecula announces the 2007 Temecula Public Safety Expo, to be held on Saturday, December 8, 2007, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Great Oak High School. Incorporated in 1989 and currently home to an estimated 97,935 residents, the City has a team of full- and part-time employees that provide services through more than a dozen departments, agencies and programs -- including Building and Safety, City Clerk’s Office, City Manager’s Office, Code Enforcement, Community Services, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Systems, Planning, Police, Public Works, and Redevelopment. As part of its commitment to provide high quality services that meet the varied needs of its residents, the City of Temecula engages its residents on a daily basis and receives constant feedback regarding its performance. Although these informal feedback mechanisms are a valuable source of information for the City in that they provide timely and accurate information about the opinions of specific residents, they do not necessarily provide an accurate picture of the community as a whole. For the most part, informal feedback mechanisms rely on the resident to initiate the feedback, which creates a self-selection bias. The City receives feedback only from those residents who are motivated enough to initiate the feedback process. Because these residents tend to be those who are either very pleased or very displeased with the service they have received, their collective opinions are not necessarily representative of the City’s resident population as a whole. The motivation for the current study was to design and employ a methodology that would avoid the self-selection bias noted above and thereby provide the City with a statistically reliable understanding of residents’ satisfaction, priorities, and concerns as they relate to services and facilities provided by the City of Temecula. Ultimately, the survey results and analyses presented in the report will provide Council and staff with information that can be used to make sound, strategic decisions in a variety of areas, including service improvements and enhancements, measuring and tracking internal performance, budgeting, and planning. If you would like a copy of the survey, please call the Chamber office. 951-676-5090. Temecula Today | November 2007 pg 9 ACE Computer Technology Jeff Kafoury 40335 Winchester Rd. The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC) has developed a 5-year Strategic Marketing Plan that includes Rural Tourism as part of the program to support their domestic marketing efforts. Riverside County and, subsequently, Temecula Valley is considered rural and part of the program. The plan includes the integration of three key components: Rural Tourism, California Welcome Centers and Cultural/Heritage Tourism. An objective of the plan is for the CTTC to partner with gateway and urban cities (including San Francisco, LA, San Diego, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Ontario) and to re-brand/ reposition the experiences of rural California. Regional Marketing The TVCVB was a proud sponsor for the Temecula Valley International Film & Music Festival and hosted the VIP Hospitality Suite for the week of the event. Numerous guests were assisted with lodging, dining and recreational activity recommendations. A film-maker site tour and a wine tasting tour were offered to visiting guests in an effort to introduce and educate those unfamiliar with our breath-taking valley. The CVB also sponsored a table at the Sunday night Gala Dinner at Pechanga Resort & Casino. Members of the CVB Board of Directors, staff and invited guests of the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association were on hand to share in the recognition and presentations to award-winning film makers, producers and deserving talent. Great Response to “Temecula” at Local & Domestic Trade Shows The Motivation Show (9/25-27) The TVCVB ventured outside of California and attended the Incentive Travel & Meeting Executives Trade Show at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago. This show is the world’s largest collection of NEW ideas to stimulate sales, improve performance, and reward service. More than 2,000 exhibits featured the most popular brand name merchandise, incentive travel and meeting destinations, gift cards, and online services, used in programs to motivate employees, boost sales, and increase market share. The show attracted over 13,000 buyers, 30% of which have annual travel budgets of $100,000-$1 Million. Leslie Mercado and Steve Mallory of Pechanga Resort & Casino manned the booth and was visited by hundreds of Meeting Planners, Travel Agents & Company Executives interested in the Temecula Valley as a destination. Many qualified contacts were made at the show, and the sales staff is currently following up on leads from such companies as Abbott Laboratories, The Pampered Chef, Amgen, Allstate Insurance and Wicks. California State Open Golf Championship (9/25) Team TVCVB played with one of the pros in the Pro-Am at Red Hawk Golf Course. As the oldest pro golf championship in the state, some of the best up-and-coming players from around the world competed in this tournament. The CVB distributed visitor guides and winery maps at the check-in table. NFRW National Convention (9/28) Over 1,000 delegates from all over the US attended this event at the Palm Springs Convention Center. CVB Co-Chair, Val Skovron, invited us to participate, where we distributed collateral and coordinated 5 wineries to provide wine tasting for the attendees. Participating wineries were: Briar Rose, Maurice Car’rie, VR La Cereza, Wilson Creek and Keyways. Special guests from the entertainment industry as well as California Republican Party leaders and elected officials and local dignitaries were among the crowd. Contacts were made with some meeting planners interested in bringing groups to Temecula. NBC Travel Expo (9/29-30) Held at the San Diego Convention Center, Pechanga invited us to partner at this show. It yielded 4,000 people and we made good contacts with attendees and media representatives (The Epoch Times-Chinese Newspaper, Golf and Wine Travel, Honeymoon Wishes, The Women’s Travel Club and Tijuana ConVis). Cornerstone: Same church, new venue. Temecula has a new place to worship. On April 29, Cornerstone Community Church, which is located in Wildomar, had their first service at the new Temecula Campus, known to most as the Tower Plaza movie theater. With it’s own worship band, campus pastors, children’s classes and early childhood center, the Temecula Campus is much more than ‘a place to worship.’ It is a place to find community and friendship. It is a place for families, children, singles and teens. But most importantly, it is a safe place for people in every stage of life with real stories and real struggles to discover the love of Christ. And while it might seem slightly out of the box for a church to meet in a movie theatre, Cornerstone has never been about what type of building they meet in. After all, the church is what’s left when the building is gone – the people. Cornerstone is about those people and providing them with the means to search, grow and worship in whatever way possible. Barley & Hops is an Olde World Family Tavern featuring over 100 beers with 18 on tap from some of the world’s biggest, and best, beer producing countries; including Belgium, England, Ireland, and Germany. Others include The Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Scotland, as well as quite a few of our West Coast micros. All of our wines are from Temecula Valley vineyards Our Soups, Stews, Casseroles, Sandwiches and Pizza Toppings are slow cooked, stewed, roasted, and marinated early each morning every day and finished upon your order. This process allows us to serve extremely flavorful and succulent food very efficiently. We will be open for lunch, dinner, and a Sunday breakfast buffet. Our hours of operation will be: Monday-Thursday 11-11:00pm, Friday & Saturday 11-12:00am and Sunday 10-10:00pm. The Barely and Hops Olde World Tavern is located on Hwy 79 South in Temecula, on the southeast corner of Jedidiah Smith in the Temecula Creek Plaza, one traffic light past Pechanga Pkwy.
