2013 Annual Report - Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest
2013 Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest ANNUAL REPORT October 1, 2012 - September 30, 2013 Reaching our GOALS! We hope your 2013 was as eventful as ours! Throughout 33 counties in West Texas and Southern New Mexico, Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest was involved in countless programs, events, camps, and trainings that have helped shape our Girl Scouts and adult volunteers into the leaders the world needs. Our efforts to boost Girl Scout membership in troops this year were a great success, resulting in a 16% increase in troops across our council. This growth makes it easier for new girls to connect with Girl Scouts in their communities and to discover the Girl Scout Leadership Experience for themselves. Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest experienced growth in more areas than just membership in 2013. This year we hosted our inaugural Women of Distinction luncheon in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where we honored ten wonderful women - many of whom were Girl Scouts themselves - who have done an exemplary job serving their communities. The event was a great success and we look forward to establishing this event as a Las Cruces tradition. Girls Scouts of the Desert Southwest Southern New Mexico and West Texas is about community, it’s about the individuals within the community and the community as a whole. We are dedicated to the mission and we take building girls of courage, confidence and character who will make the world a better place seriously. Some 2,000 volunteers, 9,000 girls and young women, 39 staff and 21 bo ard members across 94,000 square miles comprise this community. From this group, it is the girls and young women who take the lead in developing leadership skills with us adults standing by for support. Whether these girls live in small towns, mid-size cities or in large metropolitan areas, our Girl Scouts work at developing leadership skills through individual or group organized projects. As chair of the board of directors I am inspired by these girls. Their challenges to being a Girl Scout while not unique to this region, are still ones they must learn to navigate. We are here to help girls and young women manage the demands of so many choices and possibilities and inspire those with few choices to see the Every year we see more and more Girl Scouts possibilities within themselves. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is about acquiring and graduate from the Girl Scout Leadership strengthening the tools that will lead her to Experience and move forward into the next adventure of their lives. It gives me great pride success, however she defines, knowing that to witness their development over the years, she has support and positive influences within her community, the Girl Scout community. and I am optimistic about our future with these girls as our leaders. On behalf of the board of directors, I thank you for your interest, commitment and dedication to providing support to our girls in the Desert Southwest region. Diane Flanagan, CEO Cindy Conroy, Chair, Board of Directors From left: Diane Flanagan, Cindy Conroy 2013 Women of Distinction, Las Cruces, NM Membership It was a great year for girl membership. This year, 8,769 girls participated in troops and various program pathways representing a 16% increase in troop girls! The girls were supported by 1,435 adults plus 551 lifetime members. This year 4,162 girls experiencedGirl Scouting beyond the troop during the school day, at local program events, and attending resident and local day camps. Collaborations with other local youth serving agencies continued to provide a valuable service delivery model to reach girls new to Girl Scouting. Funding from our United Ways has provided the valuable financial resources to support these “outreach” program opportunities. 2013 Gold Awards The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout may earn. Someone once described the Girl Scout Gold Award as being “what you really want to be remembered for” in Girl Scouting. For many, the leadership and organizational skills, sense of community, and commitment that come from “going for the Gold” set the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship. New Mexico Gold Awards Mallory Alexander, Las Cruces, NM “Childhood Obesity” Cynthia Lupien, Roswell, NM “Stations of the Cross Paintings” Faith Simitz, Roswell, NM “Suicide Prevention: Keeping Kids Alive” Texas Gold Awards Melody Davis, Midland, TX “Strings for Students” Amy O’Donnell, Las Cruces, NM “Childhood Obesity” 2013 Scholarships Each year Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest awards college scholarships to Gold Award recipients and/or Girl Scouts graduating from high school. College Scholarships were awarded to the following well deserving Girl Scouts: Amanda Peterson - Midland, TX Faith Simitz - Roswell, NM Sadie Rubio - El Paso, TX Anisha Suri - Roswell, NM Summer Resident Camp, Camp Mitre Peak Summer Resident Camp In 2013, we saw the complete reinvention of our Summer Resident Camp program at Camp Mitre Peak in Alpine, TX. Through research and in-depth surveys, Program Director Christi Patton rebuilt our camp program to include new activities such as scuba diving certification, caving, and enchanced horse riding opportunities that allowed girls the chance to camp out in the open range! We ensured that our camp curriculum focused on Girl Scout Journeys while allowing girls to make choices on what they wanted to do every day at camp! This revolutionary camp experience was very well received and encouraged over 150 girls to attend camp in 2013. We look forward to hitting full capacity this year! Volunteer Service Our wonderful volunteers make magic happen all across our council and their direct service helps guide girls of all ages along the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. In 2013, volunteers gave more than 852,500 hours of their time to mentor girls in their community. Girl Scouts also gave back by dedicating over 2,900 service hours through Take Action projects in their communities. From leading food drives for the needy to literacy to community clean-up efforts, Girl Scouts took part in serving their communities in a variety of ways! Women of Distinction Over the years we have honored more than 300 women who have distinguished themselves through their leadership and extraordinary contributions to the Permian Basin community and, most importantly, by serving as role models for the girls who will be the leaders of tomorrow. In 2013, we bolstered our efforts by expanding our Women of Distinction event to the Las Cruces, New Mexico area. We commemorated the inaugural Las Cruces event by inviting special guest, New Mexico Governor, Susana Martinez to be our keynote speaker. Governor Martinez spoke about her experience as a Girl Scout and how it shaped her into the woman she is today. She encouraged girls to be confident in choosing their career goals and not allow society’s conventions to adversely affect their decisions. We honored 10 women at our Las Cruces event and hope to salute many, many more in the coming years!
