If through thi~ gate, 0 J'caller gentle and joyous, we may
furnish you a glimpse into our collegiate world, permit us to
hope that you will n•cognize therein, an Onsis rRthcr than a
Sahara; an evidence of life and vigor, rather than 11 scene
of desolation and decay. Certainly our portals bear no such
in8cription as Dante ~>aw, but, as we open them wi<le, one
which is truthful to all the greeting of om· Ahnll )later is
joyously exteud<-d to her frtendf'.
The usual appearance of life and beauty, which our campus e>er assumes with the return of spring, ami which the
1 rough blasts of winter scarcely dissipate, hriugs to our mind
I a remark of our esteemed Pastor and Commissioner, Dr.
GoERT:>ER, to the eficct that he had >isited nearly erery College in the Union, hut nowhere, not even beneath the elms of
Yale, had he seen a College enclosure comparable with that
of Hamilton's.
In the future, as each student shall go forth, may he find a
home graced with crcry physical beauty, but never, we wot,
;;hall the memory of this spot be forgotten : rnthl'r ~hall its
scenery, its oaks and its maple~, its walks and its drives
occupy a heart-spot, as fresh as its rcrdure and as la~tiog as
its ~oil.
!
Through the liberality of gentlemen io the city of :Xew
York, the private collection of the late Eo'"ARD Rom:-~so)J,
D. D., LL. D., of Union Theological Seminary, has lately
been placed on the shelves of the College Library. It consists of 1420 volume~, and is quite uncommon as a special collection in two dcpartrr.ents of learning : Oriental Topography
and Biblical Exegesis. 1'o these two suhjects Dr. RoBI~so:>
devoted the study and close ubscrmtion of a life ; and this
library indicates the very remarkable exclusiveness of bis devotion. W c doubt whether any library in the country bas a
more complete collection of hooks of Oriental tnwcl ; and
none can surpass it in the uumbcr and ''aluc of its maps of
eastern countries and tities. The best German exegetical
writers are here in considerable completene~s. Editions abo,
in various language~, of the works of Dr. Roui~sox, his Biblical Researches, Harmonie;;, in English, French, and Greek,
Dictionaries of the :Xcw 'festament, Grammar~, both Hebrew
and Greek, besides his own manuscript notes in German of the
lectures to which he lbtent:d when a young theological ~tu
dent at Halle. It is very pleasant to know that the hooks,
which have been the companions of a long life of study, may
here speak daily of their Ol':ner in the place where he gained
much of that culture through which he could enjoy their companionship.
