Must see Sites
The city’s name is deduced from Mumba or MahaAmba - the goddess worshipped by Koli tribes who
originally inhabited the area and aai or ‘mother’ in
Marathi. The capital city of Maharashtra is a conglomeration of seven islands that were home to fishing communities in good old times.
The islands were gifted as part of dowry to Charles
II of England on his wedding with Catherine of
Braganza, daughter of King John IV of Portugal.
The British played an important role in making
Mumbai (then called Bombay) an important trading
settlement. Later in the early 20th century, it became
an important centre for the Indian independence
movement.
The bold basalt structure on the Wellington Pier, formerly Apollo
Bunder, has the Mumbai Harbour in the backdrop. Its construction was started in the year 1911 to honour the royal visit of King
George V, the same year. Ironically the structure that was completed in 1924 witnessed the ceremonious exit of the last British
regiment after Independence.
Elephanta Island (Map Grid D4) (Indian/ Foreigner: `10/ 250; : 9amsunset; Closed on Monday)
Spend a day away from the flurry of Mumbai at the Elephanta Island famed for the cave temples sculpted out of rock. The island,
previously known as Gharapuri is just about 10 kms ferry ride
away from the Gateway of India. The present name of the island
is believed to have been derived from the huge elephant sculpture at the entrance of the caves here, encountered by some
Portuguese explorers during the 17th century. It is a UNESCO
designated World Heritage Site.
A wide variety of street food and gourmet cuisines
make the Mumbai experience even more irresistible.
The abundant business opportunities as well as superior living standards the city offers, draw people
from all over India thus making Mumbai a medley of
several communities and cultures.
