Vibe’s Sunshine Girl We spotted our Sunshine Girl, Kristi Underwood, basking in the sun at Woods Cove. Kristi is grateful to be living in Laguna with her two teenagers. Having lost her husband to cancer 6 years ago she’s learned to appreciate everything, understanding how suddenly it can be taken away. When she’s not bartending and serving at Hawaiian Gardens Casino, she’s enjoying the outdoors at the beach or hiking Top of the World trails. She loves to cook but would never pass up a fabulous meal from Montage’s Studio Restaurant or Cafe Zoolu and her favorite retail haunts include Hobie, 11th Moon and Romantic Boutique. Kristi’s plan for the future is to simply live life with her kids to the fullest each and every day! Tucked behind 1956 South Coast Hwy. her studio is colorfully decorated in dream catchers and palms. Having completed her first summer camp session to rave reviews from both parents and kids, she is currently focused on Fall after school programs for ages 5-16. During the school day Pre-natal, Parent/baby and Parent/ toddler classes are also offered. Kids Summer Camp with Owner, Staci Bina, pictured in the bottom row. A typical one hour class begins with a candle incense lighting ritual reflecting “Puja” in India where the space is blessed for all who enter. A half hour of Asana Yoga (involving partners) and Storytelling Yoga (creative postures) is followed by “Mindfulness Meditations” which asks students to activate positive ideas to calm their busy minds. At the end of each class Shavasana (relaxation pose) is set to music where everyone receives a lavender foot rub to reward their hard work. Aside from the kids’ physical progression, the Loving/Kindness Meditations often offer the most powerful results. Life skills of compassion, forgiveness and kindness are instilled by having kids send love to someone they like and/or dislike. The goal is for kids to depart feeling refreshed and confident. Staci intends to expand her yoga practice to different locations and start a nonprofit to bring yoga to public schools. She is offering a Certified Teacher Training Weekend August 14-16 for anyone interested in teaching Kid Yoga at a fee of $695. After that, she’ll be looking to hire. In Laguna Beach we already have a lot to be happy about, namely that we live in Laguna Beach. But what about everyone else? The Pageant of the Masters seeks to answer this question in this years’ “The Pursuit of Happiness.” The Pageant explores what makes people happy, from Winslow Homers’ Snap the Whip, and the joy of recess, to patriotism in our American identity in Edward Morans’ Betsy Ross Presenting Flag. The entire first act seems to derive its joy from pride in the American arts and history. As a side game, try to count how many times George Washington makes an appearance in the first act. True to form though, the Pageant looks beyond our borders to discover the sources of delight in other cultures. The intricate design of Chikanobu’s A Winter Scene from Japan reveals the serenity of a snowy winter, while Fragonard’s The Swing gives a snapshot of a leisurely spring day in France. Beyond the tableaus, several of the bronze and marble reproductions from Cyrus Dallin’s The Epic of the Indian showcase the work of the army of Pageant volunteers who devote their time and talents to make this all possible. The attention to detail in these sculptures allows the audience to view the full spectrum of emotions in these pieces. All these pieces have made for a wonderful program but in the pursuit of happiness I suggest you bring binoculars and rent the seat cushion. Tickets for the Pageant of the Masters are available through August 31. www.foapom.com WE DELIVER! Art-A-Fair: June 26-Aug. 30. Sun.-Thurs. 10am-9pm, Fri. & Sat. 10am-10pm.
