PORTLAND, Ore.- The Portland Rose Festival
announced today that the public benefit non-profit
-- Friends of Portland International Raceway (FOPIR)

Races, starting in 2016. The Rose Cup Races, set for
July 29 - 31, 2016 will still be a highlight Sanctioned
Event on the Festival’s calendar of events. The Rose
Festival will turn over operational controls to the
group, made up of experienced racers and race
management personnel from the Sports Car Club of
America, the Cascade Sports Car Club and dedicated
PIR volunteers.
“The Rose Cup Races have been a part of the Rose

very important,” said Jim Franzen, long time Race

“Turning this historically significant racing event
over to these dedicated professionals of FOPIR, will ensure
the Rose Cup Races have the best opportunity for future
growth and development,” said Jeff Curtis, CEO, Portland
Rose Festival Foundation. “Although we are stepping back
from the controls, the Portland Rose Festival will continue
featuring the race as a prominent event. We know that the
expertise and energy this group brings will grow the race
in exciting new ways.”
FOPIR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to the

sustaining and expanding PIR’s civic contribution as an
institution in North Portland in a manner that assures
its ongoing value as a venue for motorsports and other
diverse forms of recreation and entertainment. The first
step is for a Race Committee to be formed with event
planning following quickly thereafter. More information

My first taste of victory came in
an SCCA road rally event in West
Texas in 1968. My mom and dad
drove while I “navigated” from my
car seat in the back of our 66’ Ford
Mustang. I was about 6 months old.
By 1970 I was going to sports car
races at Portland International
Raceway and Seattle International
Raceway in Kent, Washington to
watch my dad race his Triumph
Spitfire in the hotly contested G
Production SCCA class.
A year later my dad lost a rear
wheel at Laguna Seca and spun at
the fastest portion of the track. A
section of track that only exits today
in the memories of the “old school”
racers. When I saw the race car
after the race I declared, “I don’t
wanna be a race car driver.” Only 4
years old and already retired from
racing. It didn’t last…..
A Lifetime Journey in Racing
BMX bikes at the local dirt track.
While I was always the smallest kid
in my age group, I pedaled that bike
pretty damn quick to many wins.
In high school I started volunteering
with the Oregon Region SCCA in
Timing and Scoring. I absolutely
loved it! It was so much fun being
an integral part of making the
race weekend a success. Soon a
couple of my closest friends were
joining me at the track as SCCA
workers as well. We made some
great memories I’ll never forget
during this time. We even worked
the 1984 G.I. Joe’s 200 inaugural
race weekend when Al Unser Jr.
won his first Indy Car race. Side
note: A couple weeks ago Al was
my teammate in the 25 Hours
of Thunderhill in a Wolf Racing
Prototype. What a surreal racing
world we live in.
When I went off to college in the fall
of 1985 my trips to the race track
became few and far between, but I
still watched racing on TV and read
my SCCA SportsCar and On Track
magazines cover-to-cover. Upon
graduating from college I purchased
my first full-fledged racing gokart, a Margay sprint kart with a
I continued going to races with my
family until my dad quit racing
after the 1977 season. During these
years my dad won many races
and championships, including
three Rose Cup wins in GP. I also
watched Monte Shelton win his
first Rose Cup in 1972 in his wicked
cool Lola T162. My favorite race car
drivers were Jackie Stewart, Monte
Shelton and my dad. I wanted to be
like them.
At home in my basement, I raced
my AFX and TYCO slot cars and
dreamed of the day I would race the
real thing. My first official wheelto-wheel competition came racing
4
Oregon Region SCCA
Yamaha KT100 engine. I chose the
Yamaha class because it was the
largest and most competitive class
in the International Kart Federation.
During a 4 year period I raced (and
many times beat) future all-stars
of racing. I knew I belonged. And
that felt really good.
During these years my dad decided
to start racing again. This time in
go-karts with me as the experienced
racer in the family. I also became
lifelong friends with Mark Tatom,
one of my fiercest on-track rivals
in karts. He kept me grounded
through my ascent in racing. A true
friend. Even my future wife Jenny
would support me and help crew
most race weekends. She thought I
was going through “a stage” in my
life. Ask her how fun it is lifting
200 pound go-karts onto kart stands
all day, and starting my kart in the
castor oil smoke of 30+ competitors
every heat race!
I soon realized racing gave me great
joy on and off-track. Bench racing
with racing buddies has always
been a highlight when we get
together and talk about the “good
old days”, even when that means
the race last month.
The Spec Racer Ford was my first
step into SCCA racing. My dad
was my crew chief as we raced up
and down the west coast. I could
not have made the jump to SCCA
without him.
When I won the Rose Cup in SRF
my rookie season I think my dad
was riding as big of a high as I
was! By-the-way, my mother and
grandmother told me they knew I
would win. Gotta love family!
Fast forward 20 years. I’ve been
blessed to make a living in the
racing world. I own Pro Drive
Racing School with Kristen
Moore, my sister-in-law. I get the
opportunity to teach people about
driving every day. I’ve raced with
SCCA, IMSA, Grand-Am, United
SportsCar Championship and many
other sanction bodies.
Todd Harris in his natural habitat.
Come race with us!
I’ve raced too many cars to list.
Open-wheel, closed-wheel. 950+
horsepower, 100 horsepower.
pro races, club races. Amazing
victories, heartbreaking defeats.
And now my 16 year old son
Calvin has already raced his first
race weekend with Oregon Region
SCCA in a SRF. His little brother
Taylor is already racing go-karts
and just drove a car for the first time
in his life. A Ferrari in the paddock

Mid-Ohio Runoffs Qualifications, Track Configuration Posted
TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 9, 2015) – The
qualification process and course
configuration for the 2016 SCCA
Runoffs Presented by Garmin VIRB
at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course,
with race days Sept. 23-25, have
been posted.
Qualification through the U.S.
Majors Tour remains essentially
unchanged from 2015.
A driver must notch a minimum of
three separate race weekends and
post at least three individual race
finishes. In addition, these drivers
must fulfill at least one of the
following requirements: finish in
the top 10 in class conference point
standings, for a class with fewer
than or equal to 20 participants, or
finish in the top 50-percent of the
class conference point standings
for classes with more than 20
participants (a new addition for
2016); finish in the top 50-percent of
class Nationwide points; or earn a
Nationwide point total greater than,
or equal to, the point target set in
2015.
Drivers may also qualify through a
Divisional racing pathway, which
involves participation in four
qualifying events.
A flowchart showing the
Runoffs pathways, including
the Nationwide point targets,
can be seen at SCCA.com/
RunoffsQualification. As in the
past, the previous SCCA National
Champion from each class will be
granted a provisional invitation to
defend their title in that same class.
The 2016 Runoffs will utilize MidOhio's "pro course" configuration
for the duration of the event. The
pro course is the 13-turn, 2.258-mile
configuration that continues straight
from Turn One to the approach to
the track's famed Keyhole turn. This
8
configuration was utilized for the
Runoffs from 2003 to 2005.
"I'm very pleased that we have
decided to use the short course at
Mid-Ohio for the 2016 Runoffs,"
Dennis Dean, Chief Stewart of the
Runoffs, said. "I believe it provides
the most demanding configuration
available to us at this classic road
racing venue. It's completely fitting
that our National Champions be
tested on the most challenging
course we can provide."
The Mid-Ohio Majors, June 3-5,
will also utilize the pro course
configuration.

Solo
Director
A couple of months ago, Solo
Manager, Brian Clemons and I, with
the help of Rio Rios, conducted a
survey in regards to Oregon Region
Solo. We wanted to know if Solo
participants were interested in
making some changes for the 2016
season. Several people participated
in the survey and we received a lot of
great feedback.
One of the things the survey asked
was if participants thought OR
Region should adopt the Northwest
Region style of class groupings.
By adopting this indexed style of
classing, we would create fewer
classes with each class having more
participants. In the survey we stated
that with the current style of classing
we have many classes, but several of
them have 3 or fewer participants.
Adopting the indexed style of
classing would eliminate the Open
Pax class, but would retain the Pro
Pax class. What we wanted to know
was if participants felt this change
in classification would promote
more participation and/or increased
membership.
What we found is that the survey
participants were nearly split down
the middle. The percentage of yeses
was just slightly higher than the
nos. What was interesting to me
was that many of the comments
that were written in response to this
question were in favor of keeping
the current classing structure. Some
of the commenter’s stated that they
liked the simpler classing structure,
but they did not see how it would
increase participation. One thing that
really stood out was that many of the
10
Changes for the 2016 Solo Season
commenter’s were opposed to the
elimination of the Open Pax class.
Several of the respondents declared
their dissatisfaction with the idea of
eliminating Open Pax.
After reading the comments, I went
back and took a look through the
2015 event results. What I found was
that Open Pax had the most regular
attendees throughout the season;
more people regularly participated
in Open Pax than any other class. I
shared this information with the Solo
Committee during the December 15th
committee meeting. Afterward we
had a discussion and then we voted
unanimously to leave the current
classing structure as it is.
In the survey we also asked
participants if they thought counting
all runs (not just the first 3) for scoring
would help to increase participation
and/or increase membership. Again,
there was no clear answer from the
survey responses. We discussed this
topic during the committee meeting
and decided that for now, we will
not be making any changes to run
counts. We would first like to try
other methods for increasing event
participation.
With our current rules, passengers
are only allowed after the first
3 competition runs have been
completed. In the survey we asked
if participants thought that allowing
passengers on all runs would
promote more participation and/
or increased membership. 82% of
respondents said yes. During the
meeting we unanimously voted in
favor of changing the rule to allow
drivers to take passengers on all runs.
Novice drivers must have approval
from a Solo Safety Steward before
taking a passenger on any run.
One other change we may see for
2016 would be the creation of a Race
Tire Index Class. Committee member
Ben Cort, has suggested that we
group race tire classes (Modified,
Street Modified, Prepared, etc.)
together in an index class. Ben will
write a proposal to present to the
committee at the January meeting.
Thank you to everyone who
participated in the survey. Several
of the respondents gave ideas
and suggestions for increasing
participation. The feedback you
provided is a valuable resource to
our club. My hope is that we can
implement the ideas and increase our
participation numbers in 2016.

Don’t Judge Till You Drive - The 2016 Prius is the Best Yet
By Jeff
Zurschmeide,
Loud Pedal
Editor
2016 marks the arrival of the fourth
generation of Toyota’s favorite
Hybrid car – and arguably the car
that made the Hybrid more than a
science fair curiosity. Of course I’m
talking about the Prius.
the new system reduces parasitic
loss (the drop in power that all cars
have between the engine and the
wheels) by 20%.
Except for the lowest trim level
model, the 2016 Prius has gone
to more efficient and lighter
Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries.
Prior generations used nickel metal
hydride (NiMH) batteries, and
that’s what you’ll still find in the
bottom trim. There’s nothing wrong
with NiMH batteries, but the Li-Ion
batteries are smaller, lighter, and
store more energy.
The new Prius improves fuel
economy, torque and horsepower,
interior features, and looks
distinctly different from its
predecessors. You may
love or hate the new
bodywork –
especially the
blocky rear-end
– but you
will definitely recognize the 2016
Prius when you see it.
Engine & Drivetrain
Toyota’s new drivetrain is a 1.8-liter
gasoline engine coupled with two
electric motors and a continuously
variable transmission. That’s key,
because the system is optimized
to let the engine and the motors
run at their optimal RPMs, while
the transmission takes care of
accelerating
the car. Toyota says that
16
The EPA has not yet issued their
final word, but it looks like the new
Prius will be rated for 54 MPG in
the city and 50 MPG on the freeway,
with a combined real-world driving
rating of 52 MPG. But here’s a
data point - in a solid day of realworld driving, I averaged well
over 60 MPG. And I wasn’t really
even trying to save gas. There was
no crawling down the freeway
shoulder at 40 MPH – this was in
Southern California and we were
cruising
at 70. Worth
noting
for fuel
Oregon
Region
SCCA
Upgraded Interior
The difference between the new
Prius and the old is not all under the
hood. You also get a dramatically
more modern and comfortable
interior. The new Prius looks like
something out of a science fiction
movie. You may love it or hate it,
but if you’re a Prius buyer, chances
are you’re on the love side.
Drastically Better Handling
Toyota put a bunch of effort into
the chassis and suspension, and this
is the most dramatic change in the
2016 Prius. Where before you got
great fuel economy,
but no joy in your
driving, the new
Prius is
actually
fun when you get on a twisty
mountain road. Toyota took us out
to the old El Toro Marine Corps Air
Base and let us race around a tight
autocross course in the 2015 Prius
and then the new model. The old
Prius plowed around corners like
a John Deere tractor, while the new
one offered vastly sharper steering
and confident suspension response.
Out on the road, the new Prius feels
firm and precise – it’s actually a real
car now!
The new Prius starts at $25,035 and
ranges up to $30,835.

Oregon Region SCCA Enters Into
Partnership with FOPIR and Cascade
Sports Car Club for the 2016 Rose Cup
For 2016 the Portland
Rose Cup promises to
be a larger and more
enhanced Northwest
racing event.
For the past several
years the Rose Cup
has been held during
the month of June,
a month not known
for dry weather
conditions.
To give the Rose Cup
a better shot at decent
weather, the 2016 Race
will be held on July 29,
30 & 31.
This last weekend in
July was chosen due to
it being statistically the
driest weekend of the
year in Portland.
Not a guarantee, but if you like
racing on dry asphalt, this is the
weekend to race.
The other change is the group
managing the event. Friends of
Portland International Raceway
(FOPIR), has accepted the duties
of organizing and putting on the
event in place of the Portland Rose
Festival Association.
That is correct, the Portland Rose

SCCA Pro Racing Names Derrick Walker As President
TOPEKA, Kan. (December 2, 2015)
– SCCA Pro Racing has named
Derrick Walker as its newest
president, handing the operations
for the sanctioning body to the
respected motorsports veteran
beginning January 1, from his
Indianapolis-based office. Walker
replaces Robert Clarke, who
will serve as SCCA Pro Racing's
Chairman of the Board.
Walker most recently served
as President of Operations and
Competition of the Verizon IndyCar
Series, after spending more than 40
years in racing in roles including
mechanic, engineer, operations
manager and team owner.
"I have always been impressed by
the work that SCCA Pro Racing
has done over the years, and know
that racing in the United States
M
REALTY
would not be where it is without it,"
Walker said. "I'm looking forward
to joining SCCA Pro Racing at a
great time, to make a difference for
Pro Racing and the motorsports
industry."
Walker Motorsports ran its first
race in 1991 at the Indianapolis 500,
where Willy T. Ribbs became the
first African-American driver to
qualify for the "Greatest Spectacle
In Racing." The team has operated
continuously in open-wheel racing
and evolved into a competitive
team in the IMSA WeatherTech
SportsCar Championship.
As President of SCCA Pro Racing,
the Scotland-native inherits a
healthy company that sanctions and
works closely with Pirelli World
Challenge, Battery Tender Mazda
MX-5 Cup, and Trans-Am, and is
poised to launch the popular FIAcertified Formula 4 United States
Championship Powered by Honda
in 2016.
"We are pleased to welcome Derrick
as the new President of SCCA Pro
Racing," John Walsh, Chairman of
the Sports Car Club of America,
Inc., Board of Directors said. "He
brings an unsurpassed skill set in
event operations and a lifetime of
racing knowledge. His influence
on Pro Racing's series will be
invaluable as he brings them to a
new level of professionalism."
"We are equally fortunate to have
Robert Clarke step up to guide
SCCA Pro Racing as the Chairman
of the Board. In his short tenure
as President, his vision for growth
has already made an impact on
motorsports in the United States."

Car Club of America, Inc. Vice

while serving as SCCA Pro Racing
Chairman.
"This is an exciting time for SCCA
Pro Racing, with large fields in

Am, the global MX-5 configuration
beginning, and the launch of
Formula 4 in the United States,
which has the potential to be a
game changer for young drivers,"
Clarke said. "We're proud to be

Name Oregon Region’s Double Regional Races for 2016!
Wanna Have Some Fun and Become
Rich & Famous?
(Well, maybe just infamous. )
Our regional races need names
other than “Double Regional.” So,
we’re having a contest to “Name
That Race!”
Get your creative juices flowing
and send in your suggestions. Your
name could be highlighted on the
schedule for the weekend!
“Name That Race” entries can be
humorous (Make Mine a Double) or
serious (in memory of or in honor of
someone).
A panel of judges will choose the
entry they like best and, voila, your
name in lights!
Race dates to be named are:
• April Double Regional
• May Double Regional
• August Double Regional
To enter your suggestions, just send
them to the Oregon SCCA office at
[email protected] or
call 503-747-3771.
Deadline for entry is Ground Hog
Day, February 2, 2016.
