Introduction
By age 65, many of us will experience the cloudy
vision that’s caused by cataracts. It’s just a natural
part of aging. But it doesn’t have to be a permanent
loss of vision quality. Cataract surgery is both safe
and effective. With the help of a replacement lens,
it is possible to regain the vision quality you had
prior to cataracts.
Crystalens®replacement lenses
are designed to eliminate your cataracts
and give you a natural range of vision to
enjoy activities such as driving during the day
and at night, using an iPad ® or computer,
exercising, sports, and much more.
This brochure will explain the benefits of Crystalens
and provide an overview of cataracts and cataract
surgery, to help you and your doctor decide if
Crystalens is right for you.
4
What are cataracts?
As we grow older, the eye’s natural lens can stiffen,
harden, and begin losing its clarity, forming a cataract.
Since the lens is no longer as flexible or as clear
as it used to be, the eye can’t focus light properly,
causing the following symptoms:
■ Cloudy or blurred vision
■ Sensitivity to light and glare
■ Poor night vision
■ Fading color
■ Frequent changes in glasses prescription

Cataract surgery can help
restore your vision
Normal vision
Vision through a cataract
Cataract surgery is a safe, effective way to improve
your vision. Over 3 million procedures are performed in
the United States every year.
Most cataract surgery can be performed on an
outpatient basis.
Cataract surgery is a microsurgery, which means a tiny
incision is made in the eye to allow a small instrument
(about the size of a pen tip) to perform the surgery,
allowing for relatively fast healing.
During the surgery, the eye’s natural lens is removed
and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular
lens, or IOL.
By age 65, many of us will develop a cataract.
Some people begin to experience the early effects of
cataracts, such as cloudy or blurred vision, as early
as their mid 40s.
If you develop cataracts, it doesn’t mean you’ll have
a permanent loss of vision quality or that you have to
give up the things you love.

Three replacement lens options are: standard
monofocal IOLs, multifocal IOLs, and Crystalens
accommodating IOLs.
The Crystalens advantage
Standard monofocal IOLs deliver improved vision at just
one distance, usually far.
After surgery with a standard monofocal lens, you
will probably need to wear glasses for near and
intermediate vision, even if you didn’t need glasses
before surgery.
Multifocal IOLs may cause halos and glare when driving
at night, and some patients have difficulty adjusting to
their new vision.
Multifocal IOLs are designed to focus on near and distant
objects. To accomplish this, they divide the light, which
may increase instances of halos and glare.
Crystalens IOLs are designed to reduce your need for
prescription glasses during your normal daily activities.
Crystalens has flexible hinges that enable it to move
and flex with your eye, in response to the eye’s focusing
muscles. Its movement is similar to the eye’s natural
lens. Crystalens does not divide light and allows 100%
of light, 100% of the time.1 That’s why Crystalens can
deliver an active range of vision in all lighting conditions,
with a range of focus that extends from arm’s length
to distance.
10
Crystalens works like
your natural lens
No other replacement lens comes closer than
Crystalens to mirroring the natural focusing ability
of the eye.
The muscles of
your eye move and
flex Crystalens, to
focus at different
distances.
The human eye uses its muscles to move and flex
Crystalens, which allows you to focus on what you
want to see.
This movement is called accommodation, and it
enables Crystalens to provide a continuous range
of clear vision from arm’s length to distance.

Intraocular lens
What to expect with
your new Crystalens
Crystalens is designed to give you an active
range of vision.
■ The goal of your Crystalens procedure is to allow
you to experience—like most Crystalens patients—
greater independence from glasses. Some
Crystalens patients occasionally need an
inexpensive pair of over-the-counter glasses to read
fine print.
■ Crystalens
is an FDA-approved, permanent
replacement lens.
■ The
surgery usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes
and is performed on an outpatient basis.
■ Numbing
drops and medications are administered
to help you relax. Typically, you won’t feel anything
during the procedure.
■ Most
patients are able to resume driving and return
to work within just 2 or 3 days.
14
Being active takes an
active range of vision
Crystalens gives you vision for today’s active lifestyles.
Imagine being able to play sports, exercise, drive a
car, use a computer, or send text messages—all with
little or no need for glasses.
Crystalens is designed to give you a more
natural range of vision so you can see everything
from waves in the distance to things you reach
out and touch. That makes Crystalens an ideal
choice for people who enjoy being active.
In a recent survey, after cataract surgery, Crystalens patients
felt MORE comfortable doing MORE of their favorite
activities, such as1:
■ Driving at night
3
■ Driving during the day
3
■ Sports/outdoor activities/exercising
3
■ Reading
3
■ Shopping
3
■ Social activities

The active range of vision—
living life your way
Monofocal lenses have only one focal point, usually
distance, making it difficult to clearly see items at
arm’s length without glasses.
See life more clearly with Crystalens—the most
natural way to enjoy your active lifestyle.ra
18
The active range of vision—
seeing more of your world
While monofocal lenses improve far vision, you won’t
be able to clearly see multiple focal points. For
instance, when driving, you may be able to see the
road clearly, but you’ll need to put on glasses to read
your speedometer or GPS.
With Crystalens, many patients can see
their car’s dashboard and the road ahead.
20
Is Crystalens right for you?
Your physician will perform a thorough eye exam to
determine the most appropriate treatment for you, but
you may be a good candidate for Crystalens:
■ If your eyes are healthy
3
■ If you have not had previous cataract surgery
3
■ If you have no major health problems
3
■ Even if you’ve had a refractive procedure such
3
as LASIK
Talk to your eye doctor about the risks and benefits
of Crystalens. To find a Crystalens specialist in your

Frequently asked questions
1
What is Crystalens?
2
How does Crystalens work?
Crystalens is an IOL that replaces the eye’s natural
lens after cataracts have developed. Unlike a
standard IOL, it is designed to both correct your
cataracts and give you an active range of vision.
In many cases, Crystalens can reduce your need
for glasses.
Crystalens is designed to give you a more natural
range of vision. As with the natural lens, Crystalens
accommodates, or moves and flexes, in response to
muscle contractions in the eye. These contractions
drive the movements of the lens, allowing the eye
to focus.
24
3
How is Crystalens different from a standard IOL?
4
How long will the surgery take?
5
Standard monofocal IOLs used in cataract surgery
are designed to treat only cataracts, so you will
probably still need glasses for many of your daily
activities, especially for up-close and intermediatedistance activities. Crystalens is designed to correct
more than just your cataracts. Crystalens can offer
you a more natural range of vision than a standard
monofocal IOL and, in many cases, reduce your
dependence on glasses.
Cataract surgery is typically an outpatient procedure.
The actual surgery takes approximately 15 to
20 minutes.
Will I feel anything?
No. Topical numbing drops will be placed in your
eye, and medications may be administered to help
you relax.
Frequently asked questions

8
When will I be able to return to my normal activities?
Typically, you will be able to return to normal activities
within several days. You should be able to resume
driving and return to work within 2 to 3 days. You
probably won’t need to wear an eyepatch. Your eyes
may be sensitive to touch for a few days, and you
should avoid rubbing them. It is important to avoid any lifting or straining that could increase pressure on your eyes. You should ask your doctor when it is
safe to begin exercising again.
Will I really be able to see without glasses?
If you are like many Crystalens patients, you should
experience improved vision and less dependence on
glasses. Since everyone’s vision, expectations, and
lifestyles differ, it is difficult to determine how much
you will be dependent on glasses.
How often will I need to have my eyes checked
after surgery?
Your doctor will advise you based on your procedure.
Typically, the doctor will see you one day after surgery,
with follow-ups after 1 to 4 weeks and again after 3 to 6
months. Thereafter, an annual exam is usually sufficient.
26
9
10
Will Crystalens stop working over time?
Crystalens surgery is permanent, and there is no
evidence that the lens will stop working over time.
It is an extremely well-tested and durable design. In
fact, there is clinical evidence to support that most
patients’ vision continues to improve with time.
Will I need to have cataract surgery again?
Once your cataracts are removed and replaced with
an IOL, you probably won’t need to have cataract
surgery again. In a small percentage of patients,
several months after the lens has been placed in
the eye, vision may start to become cloudy again.
This can happen with any type of IOL and is called
a secondary cataract. A surgeon can quickly remove
the clouded cells. This is done painlessly in an
outpatient environment and usually takes just a
few minutes.
What happens next
■ Having
realistic expectations of what Crystalens is
designed to do for you will increase your likelihood
of having a lifetime of vision with Crystalens. It
is important to keep all of your postoperative
appointments with your doctor and use your
eyedrops as directed.
■ Remember,
healing takes time. You might not see
your full visual outcome for 1 to 3 months
after surgery.
■ Your
doctor may give you eyedrops that will
dilate your pupil to aid in the healing and positioning
of Crystalens. If these drops are used, you may
experience light sensitivity and large pupils for
up to 2 weeks after your cataract surgery.
These symptoms will resolve as the effects of the
medication wear off.
■ Your
doctor may instruct you to wear low-power
reading glasses for 1 or 2 weeks following your
procedure to aid in the proper healing and
positioning of Crystalens.

POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS:
Implantation of Crystalens® is a surgical procedure. All surgical
procedures entail some risk. The risks of implantation with
Crystalens are generally the same potential risks that exist
for implanting all intraocular lenses. Because Crystalens has
a smaller optic compared to the standard IOL, glare and other
visual disturbances may occur under certain lighting conditions,
including at night when the pupil widely dilates. Only your surgeon
can determine if Crystalens is right for you and explain the
applicable risks. Your doctor will perform a thorough examination
and fully inform you of any increased risk of complication. Because
Crystalens only absorbs a portion of ultraviolet light, you should
wear sunglasses with UV400 protection when out in daylight.
INDICATIONS FOR USE:
Crystalens intraocular lens is indicated for implantation in the
capsular bag of the eye for the visual correction of aphakia
secondary to the removal of a cataractous lens in adult patients
with and without presbyopia. Adverse events are comparable to
the FDA-published historical controls.1 Rx only. Only your surgeon
can determine if Crystalens is right for you and explain the
applicable risks.
