A BRIEF REPORT ON NATIONAL NATURAL FOOD FESTIVAL –
YOGA NATUROPATHY SEMINAR - 2016
INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES
The world is either over nourished or malnourished owing to
various reasons such as food availability, storage, cooking,
processing, packaging,, etc. Now we are perplexed with the issues
such as what to eat, how much to eat, when to eat, how to cook,
how to preserve food, etc. The usage of chemicals, pesticides and
fertilizers in food production to aluminum utensils in kitchen,
chemical additives,
s, unnatural colours, wrong and unscientific
storage practices are causing many health problems and adding to
the disease burden. National Natural Food Festival and YogaYoga
Naturopathy Seminars and various competitions
organized
by
National Institute of Nat
Naturopathy
uropathy focused mainly on some of these
issues, if not all in trying to find solutions and offering
demonstrations so that people can improve their nutritional status.
The aim of this Fest was to showcase natural traditional cooking
practices and explain
lain the scientific reasons as to why they are
healthy. The naturopathy principles such as :
3
• Eat in moderation and only when hungry,
• Drink solids and eat liquids – emphasizing chewing and
munching;
•
Natural food preparation that retains the
essential
qualities of food are articulated in the programme.
•
Encourage
children
to
eat
jaggery
and
reduce
dependence on white sugar.
• Promote usage of small and coarse millets to add to the
food basket in place of rice and wheat.
• Show virtues of therapeutic foods such as coconut,
sesame (till), flax seed, groundnut as the best oil seeds in
place of exotic refined oil.
• Raw uncooked preparations that are used in therapies as
eliminative,
soothing
and
constructive
diets
were
prepared and served in the stalls of NNFF 2016.
• Green and herbal teas are also demonstrated about their
preparation and served.
• All such and many more food related information with
demo were provided at the venue.
The National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune, Ministry of
AYUSH, Govt. of India organizes regional, national and state level
seminars, exhibitions to propagate and promote the use of natural
food for healthy living.
In NNFF 2016 there were
more than 200 delicious recipes, variety of
exhibits
of
salads, raitas, and
special item such as “Kheer without fire” , non-spicy and non-fried,
chemical free dishes and snacks -
cooked, semi cooked and
uncooked food, displayed in Food Festival at Goa.
In this two-day
exhibition, seminars and workshops on different topics such as
4
Healthy Eating, Sustainable Foods, Therapeutic foods, Relation
between food and diseases, are organized. Various competitions for
school children were also arranged at the venue on the theme of
healthy eating, climate change etc. Naturopathy Medical Colleges
and Institutions from across the country were actively involved in
this two-day programme at Goa.
Food is medicine for Naturopaths. The present day food
neither comes from farm nor from the kitchen. It comes from
packets, bottles, containers and straight from shops and malls.
The readymade food undergoes many changes and looses all its
original essence, taste, colour, flavour, texture alongwith the
nutrition. This is creating many health problems known as noncommunicable diseases on one hand and by bringing down
immunity exposes people to various infectious diseases on the
other. This is crippling our society. The nation is facing poverty in
plenty. Now the country is food surplus, but nutrition deficient.
This situation can be changed by bringing awareness among
general public, parents, mothers, children and more importantly
youth; in making their choices. It is our responsibility to educate
them young. All schools and their management should
educate
children to dissuade from eating chocolates and cool drinks and eat
jaggery based chikkies and natural and seasonal fruits that are
locally available.
Teachers and parents should educate the
children as to why they should use jaggery in place of sugar.
The studies show that millet consumption will solve many
problems such as nutritional needs for human beings and are
environmentally sustainable as their water needs are very minimal.
Millet food production does not require the excess use of
5
chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides and weedicides. So it brings down
the expenditure on agricultural input costs and unburden farmers
from the debt. Hence it is the ethical responsibility of the society to
include more and more millets in our food basket.
We were all
familiar with jowar roti, bajra roti, jowarbakri, corn/makkika roti,
sarsonkasaag, horse gram etc.
Now we have to bring them back.
We have to return to our past good food habits, and unlearn the
modern junk food habits.
Naturopathy Students belonging to Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat,
Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim, Tamil
Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal had their stalls with
the theme of their own. Food and Nutrition is an important subject
dealt in all these colleges. The participants included Naturopathy
Institutions including colleges, people/ organizations campaigning
for sustainable food cultivation and practices. Many school children
from
different
Schools
including
residential
institutions
like
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas participated in the exhibition,
competitions in large number.
Our lifestyles in choosing foods that are locally grown will address
many of these environmental factors and also the social factor such
as providing sustenance to the farmers and prevent de-stress and
suicides. The two-day event of NNFF 2016 in Goa focused on these
issues and demonstrated healthy and sustainable food.

NNFF-2016 -Great Insights and Exciting Opportunities
Ahead
National Natural Food Festival -2016 organized by NIN at Goa during 9th
and 10th of January 2016 was an event to be cherished by Naturopathy
community. Its overwhelming success can be attributed to the dedicated
efforts of all the enthusiastic persons involved in the programme from
starting to the end.
The two day programme was inaugurated by Shri Shripad Naik, the
Hon’ble Minister of AYUSH, Govt. of India on 9th January 2016 10.30
am, in the presence of Shri Rohan Kaunte, MLA-Porvorim, Goa. Shri
Francis Dsouza, Deputy Chief Minister of Goa graced the function on the
first day. He along with all the dignitaries went to each stall and enquired
about the exhibits, tasted the food items displayed, interacted with the
Naturopathy college students who were show-casing their state-specific,
college-specific recipes that are in sync with the principles of
Naturopathy. Naturopathy students representing Andhra Pradesh,
Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh,
Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh etc have
had their stalls with a theme of their own. There were very interesting
food preparations like raw salad preparations, uncooked Idly, uncooked
Poha, different varieties of sweets prepared without using white sugar,
healthy Pans (betel leaf consumption), fruit punches, fruit salads, fruit
chats, different varieties of green teas, the list goes on. It will be
incomplete if certain preparations that were not common with all the
21
people but with people living in remote areas, who were meeting their
food/nutritional needs by using such novel foods as milk cubes(dried yak
milk) from West Bengal and cotton seed milk from Salem, Tamil Nadu. It
is amazing how such remote traditional or little societies prepared
recipes and met their food needs from the available resources.
The support and response from Goa government was very encouraging
with large number of school children participating in various
competitions conducted in drawing, painting, essay writing, elocution etc
at the exhibition. The Goa Chief Minister Shri Lakshmikant Parsekar
spent good amount of time in all stalls and was appreciative of the event
after tasting some of the food preparations on the second day. In his
speech given in the valedictory ceremony, he also shared with the
audience about his child hood illness and how it was cured by simple
Naturopathy principles at home.
The invisible support and blessings of Shri Shripad Naik, AYUSH
minister is palpable in the entire programme. Three books were released
during this programme, of which one book is on ‘Food Thoughts’, and
two monographs on ‘Nature Cure to HIV/AIDs patients’, ‘Inflammation
and Nature Cure, Parkinson’s Disease and Acupuncture’. His presence
on both days was definitely a boost for all naturopaths who had come to
attend this programme from far off places.
What next: The road map is to offer this activity to all, in the interest of
peoples’ health which largely depends on their food choices and make
these food preparations accessible, to them. While there are many
unnatural, chemical, poisonous, unhealthy foods are made available
everywhere, there are no naturopathy food stalls serving and showing
people to eat healthy and live healthy. A request is made to AYUSH
Minister by the practicing Naturopaths that a ‘Natural Food Facility
(Cafe) may be created in all proposed smart cities or existing capital cities
so that people will have a choice to go to healthy food joints. This will
definitely bring in healthy lifestyle practices. There by reducing disease
burden, more so the non-communicable diseases. NIN extends its
heartfelt thanks to all the participants and all those who made this
programme a grand success by their full cooperation, such as Aadhar
Saunstha, Goa and International Naturopathy Organization, New Delhi.
