The 2012-13 school year brought new ways to define excellence, while continuing Assumption’s best school traditions. With so many exciting accomplishments in the past year, it is a challenge to choose what we should highlight. There were successes in academics, athletics, fine arts, service and many other activities. Assumption alum, Bridget Duffy ‘97 Murphy was chosen to lead the school as our eleventh principal. All of our Junior and Senior students were issued laptop computers in the first stage of our 1:1 initiative. Our students helped to collect over 10,000 diapers for needy families in the Quad City Area. The list could go on and on. In these halls I have a daily opportunity to watch our students grow into kind, caring, compassionate, respectful and hardworking young adults. They exemplify the characteristics of what it means to be an Assumption Knight. Every student comes to us at a different place in their development. Our goal is that all students leave here forever changed for the better. With a solid tradition of excellence, we are constantly challenged to raise the bar and achieve more. It is through your generosity that we are able to face challenges and offer tremendous opportunities to current and future Knights. Your dedication has enabled us to maintain the level of excellence that continues to help Assumption students excel. On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of Assumption High School, thank you for your continued commitment to Catholic School education. Your generosity makes all things possible! Sincerely, Andrew Craig ‘95 President 2 Putting laptop computers into the hands of all junior and senior students required extensive planning – planning that minimized (but did not eliminate) the need to reconsider and revise implementation, especially during the first semester. Going 1:1 with half of the school in the first year was probably the best part of the plan, allowing us to “go live” before impacting the entire student body. This fall we were able to go 1:1 with freshmen and sophomore students. Relatively speaking, the second half of the program implementation has been nearly effortless. Of course most projects cannot provide the “bling value” of a vibrant computer network, but the auditorium roof still got repaired, eight classrooms were still remodeled, and nearly all of our classrooms are now equipped with electronic white boards. In addition, we said good-bye to all those “moody” blinds and shades as classroom windows were professionally tinted over the summer. During second semester, the southernmost end of the home economics room was remodeled into a teachers’ workroom. The new workroom is spacious, well stocked, centrally located, and best of all - attached to the print shop! Our daycare center continues to grow in numbers, and now serves more than 50 infants and children. We continually seek out ways to enhance programming and facilities, and plan to address further expansion opportunities in the coming months. As Assumption enrollment grows, so does the number of students seeking tuition assistance. We were extremely pleased when the Iowa legislature passed a $3.25M increase in allowable statewide school tuition tax credits. The Educational Opportunities Act makes it possible for Assumption to lead a K-12 tuition assistance program serving five Catholic schools in Scott County. Special thanks to families that respond to legislative alerts when invited to communicate. Your advocacy helps us to grow this program! F r o m t h e P r i n c i p a l 2012-2013 School Year By the Numbers •100% of students, grades 9-12, completed at least 20 hours of community service. Bridget Duffy ‘97 Murphy Principal • Graduation rate was 100%. • 185 Assumption students received financial aid that enabled them to receive a great education. •98% of the Class of 2013 plan to pursue post- secondary education or training. Of these, 97% plan to attend a two or four year institution, and 3% will enter the military or an apprentice program. • $4,647,000 in scholarship opportunities were offered to the Class of 2013. 11th Grade Proficiency Comparison (above the 40th percentile in each subject area) 90.54% 90.33% 81.26% 81.43% Science 84.55% 81.93% Assumption 82.57% 81.64% Math State Average Reading Assumption 88.17% AEA 9 (Local Schools) One in the Spirit, • 80% of the Class of 2013 took at least one honors, AP, and/or college course. State Average We are so blessed to have the freedom to learn and work in a Christ-centered environment, and we are proud of the ways our students and alums share the values we teach. May all that we do please God, and may God continue to watch over the Assumption family. • 9 Assumption athletic teams and 10 individuals qualified for state tournaments. Of these, 6 took 2nd place, and 4 won state championships. AEA 9 (Local Schools) Our athletic teams lived up to their reputation for excellence. State tournament appearances in Volleyball, Girls’ CrossCountry, Competition Cheer, Competitive Dance, Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Wrestling, Girls’ Track, Girls’ Soccer, Girls’ Tennis, and Baseball made for a busy year. Our drama department earned braggart’s rights with a coveted invitation to perform on the main stage at International Thespian Festival, and the Assumption Choir wowed concert audiences with amazing performances. The Assumption band (which just keeps growing) earned a Level I rating at All-State competition, our newly-established Assumption Debate team grew to more than 20 members, and our Mock Trial team had enough participants to register two teams for district competition. The tradition of excellence is alive and well at Assumption High School! • The average cumulative GPA for the Class of 2013 was 3.33. Assumption During the 2012-2013 school year, we spent a great deal of time preparing to add five new college courses, bringing our total to nine. At this point, most seniors, and many juniors, participate in college course offerings. Students often graduate with many first-year college requirements behind them, and feel better prepared for college level academic programs. • 43% of the Class of 2013 graduated with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. State Average As a first year principal, I’d like to share a little bit about myself. I am a member of the Assumption Class of 1997 - one of the best classes ever! I have a B.A. in Psychology, a B.S. and M.A. in Mathematics, and am a licensed K-12 school administrator. I have taught high school and college level mathematics at Assumption for the past 11 years, and plan to continue teaching at AHS on a limited basis while serving as principal. My husband, Kevin, and I are members of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, where the four oldest of our seven children attend school. AEA 9 (Local Schools) Greetings Friends and Fellow Alumni, • 18% of the Class of 2013 graduated with a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher on a weighted 4.0 scale. 3 A n n u a l The following gifts, in order of gift level, were received by Assumption High School between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. If your name has been omitted, misspelled, or listed incorrectly, please accept our sincerest apologies and bring the issue to our attention at (563) 326-5313 x 228 or [email protected] Illowa Bi-State Combined Federal Campaign During the 2012-2013 fiscal year, over $2,750 was donated to Assumption through the Illowa Bi-State Combined Federal Campaign. If you are employed by one of the government entities located on Rock Island Arsenal Island, you may wish to consider this payroll deduction opportunity as an easy way to donate to Assumption High School. 6 O pp o r t u n i t i e s Appreciated Securities Gifts of marketable stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that have appreciated in value can have an immediate benefit for Assumption and a favorable tax result for contributors. Bequests You may designate Assumption as a shared beneficiary on a life insurance policy. This can be done on a new or existing policy, an IRA annuity, employer group term insurance, or retirement plan. An outright bequest to Assumption High School may reduce the taxation on your estate, making the net cost of your gift much less than its face value. Deferred Giving In recent years, many donors have chosen to make charitable gifts during their lifetime. A charitable remainder trust (CRT) is a perfect vehicle for some. Income from a CRT can be available to the donor for his/her life, and potentially to another beneficiary named by the donor. Upon the death of the donor and any named beneficiary, the remainder passes to the school. t L o e n d S u pp o r t In-Kind Gifts In-kind gifts are non-cash donations that are used to carry out our educational mission. Gifts-in-kind include books, music, computers, construction materials and much more. Leo J. Feeney Assembly #260 Knights of Columbus. Bob was a very generous man, gifting many Catholic organizations through the years, and Assumption was honored to be remembered in his estate plan. His bequest was placed in the Assumption Foundation where it will provide endowed support for years to come. Helen Maes was a lifelong resident of the Quad Cities and a graduate of the Villa De Chantal. She was a fond aunt to Robert Coryn SAA ‘48. Helen had no children of her own, but wanted to support her nephew Bob’s effort to provide scholarships to deserving and financially challenged students, so she designated a portion of her estate to help provide scholarship funding. Helen’s bequest will be placed in the Coryn Family Scholarship Fund which will provide endowed scholarship support to future generations of Assumption students. Robert Lenertz and his wife, Alyce, had six children graduate from Assumption High School between 1981 and 1990. During that time Bob was helpful to the school in a variety of ways – including his volunteerism on capital fund drives. In later years, Bob and Alyce still continued to provide financial support to AHS. We feel especially honored by Bob’s final gift - a life insurance policy which named Assumption as the beneficiary. This bequest will be placed in the Assumption Foundation where it will provide endowed support to AHS for years to come. Ed and Helen Lammers were lifelong advocates of Catholic education. Their eight children attended Catholic elementary and high school in Davenport, and later attended Catholic Universities. In memory of his parents, Dr. John Lammers ’62, endowed the Edward J. and Helen T. Lammers Teacher Excellence Award as a lasting tribute to his parents. The award is given annually to an AHS teacher that demonstrates exceptional service to students and dedication to the profession of teaching.
