Stories by Brad Ziemer & Lowell Ullrich
Brad Ziemer, one of the authors of this golf magazine,
joined The Vancouver Sun way back in 1985 after spending five years at the Canadian Press news agency.
He has handled the Sun’s golf beat for the last 17 years,
long enough to see Mike Weir win on the Canadian Tour
at Mayfair Lakes and then on the PGA Tour at Northview. Ziemer, a graduate of Port Coquitlam High School
(now Terry Fox) and Western Washington University, also covers the
Vancouver Canucks. When he isn’t writing about golf in the spring and
summer, he can often be found playing it, badly. A single-digit handicap
for one fleeting summer, he is now happy to break 90.
Not Just Changing
The Way You Barbecue...
Changing Life’s Simple
Outdoor Pleasures
Veteran Province writer Lowell Ullrich has traded his
football cleats for clubs for this edition of the Golf
Guide. Ullrich, who normally covers the B.C. Lions
for The Province, and has been at the paper for three
decades, considers himself an eternal rookie in golf and,
as a result, helped himself by writing the feature on how
to take up the sport.

Welcome to the 2011 Golf Guide
We pick up my ball. We see
the next ball, maybe 25 feet
from the hole. The other one?
Nowhere to be seen. Not on
the green, not on the fringe,
nowhere. Why would anyone
even have considered looking
inside the cup?
An albatross. A gall-darned
albatross. Dancing. Shrieking.
Laughter. Weeping. Bodies on
the green. Legs kicking in the
air. You know you make me
want to shout!
Second story, a common one:
Last summer. Casual round.
Ah, that same joyous 13th.
Drive, right down the middle.
Not long, but right down the
middle.
Arrive at the ball to discover
there is no ball. I swear the
ball was right there. I saw it
stop. No ball. No evidence of
ball. Four people look. Nothing. You must have sent it into
the trees, one guy says. Or the
other way, onto a road.
We’ve mentioned before that
golf’s maddening, right?
Two stories, same course,
same hole.
A few years ago, at a charity
golf tournament at Vancouver’s University Golf Club,
my team was on the 510-yard
13th hole. Narrowish but
straight. The drive goes about
270, nice. Best ball, so the big
hitter takes a seat and the other three (yep, I’m not the big
hitter) swing away. My ball,
shock of shocks, lands near
the green. The next guy hits
the green. And the last guy
hits the green, possibly closer
to the hole than the previous
shot.
Well this is looking good.
On in two! Could we possibly
eagle this hole? The dancing
begins.
Penalty. Drop. Tears of a different sort. Bafflement. Feelings of alienation. A strong
desire to quit. Immediately.
So it is, with equal dollops of
enthusiasm and intrepidation, that Sun sports editor
Scott Brown and I welcome
the 2011 golf season and Golf
Guide 2011, brought to you by
The Province and The Vancouver Sun. It’s the second year
we’ve done a joint guide, written by The Sun’s Brad Ziemer
and The Province’s Lowell
Ullrich.
There should be something
here for everybody, from the
beginner to the, ahem, expert.
Or am I the only person who’s
ever lost a ball hit right down
the middle of the fairway?
Sure, you hit it down the middle of the fairway. ●

“We want great experiences,
but we know who we are and
where we are.”
Shaughnessy was located outside the loop before the Royal
Canadian Golf Association
relinquished its grip on Ontario’s Glen Abbey and brought
the Bell Canadian Open back
six years ago.
Some members were wary initially about the first intrusion
since the national championship was last hosted in 1966.
Other critics howled when
the rough was grown out too
much and fairways were narrowed. Only 24 of the 156-man
field broke par on opening
day.

at the driving range will be
among the more visible upgrades this time around.
“But we didn’t change anything on the course, ” said
Paul.
It may not win the approval of
Robert Allenby, who missed
the cut in 2005 by a shot and
lashed out when he said the
rough was worse than a U.S.
Open.
But there is more than sufficient comfort, Wood said,
when Vijay Singh listed
Shaughnessy in his personal
top 10 in the world. That kind
of survey will do just fine.
“We had Vijay, who is pretty
opinionated, up for a practice
round and I remember him
coming over to me and saying, ‘Where in the hell has
this place been?’” said Paul. “I
knew we had a hit.”
“Peter Jacobsen wrote a letter
to the [Shaughnessy] board
and said he’d love to be a
member because, ‘I could
play this course every day and
never get bored,’” said tournament chairman Ken Woods.
Jacobsen and other tour
Conditions won’t be a problem this time. The new July
18-24 date, a week following
the British Open, may hamper
in the pursuit of talent but
should make the course play
much firmer, Wood said.
“We didn’t know what we had
so we had to grow [the rough]
up and it was very penal to
the members. But that isn’t
going to happen,” said Wood.
“The rough will be better. It
was gnarly before. It’ll be consistently gnarly now.”
Also consistent are the same
three holes in 2005 that will
be converted from par-5s to
4s – 1, 5 and 11. Most of what
will challenge Golf Canada in
staging the event lies outside
the ropes.
“Shaughnessy was a challenge
before and will be again.
You’ve got to think strategically; how we get around holes,
the corporate world, the mom
and pop who buy tickets,” said
tournament director Bill Paul.
An added charitable component, improved traffic flow
conditions and viewing area
veterans, like ‘05 champion
Mark Calcavecchia, came to
appreciate the test associated
with playing an established
course in an era of bombsaway golf. Their responses
made Shaughnessy an obvious choice as host in its 100th
year.
How long Shaughnessy remains an institution in a
microwave golf society will
depend on an ability to adapt.
But the Twitter Tiger campaign is one sign they will try.
Another sign of forward thinking: On the back half on a
lease that will require Shaughnessy to relinquish its site to
the Musqueam Indian Band
in 2032, plans are in place
for a new facility to be built
near Richmond’s Greenacres,
which is owned by the club.
Until then, as the PGA Tour
this year has rescinded its ban
on cellphones at non-major
events, Shaughnessy can conduct smartphone surveys all
the way to the 72nd hole and
beyond as needed in July. ●

Three national titles up for grabs this year
PGA golfers aren’t the only ones duking it out in B.C.
BY Brad Ziemer
Vancouver Sun
The RBC Canadian Open,
which goes July 21-24 at Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Golf
and Country Club, is unquestionably the highlight of this
year’s B.C. golfing calendar.
But not long after Ernie Els,
Jim Furyk, Luke Donald,
Anthony Kim, Matt Kuchar
and company duke it out at
Shaughnessy, this province
will play host to three national
amateur championships.
The Royale Cup Canadian
Women’s Amateur Championship will be held July 25-29 at
Duncan Meadows Golf Club
on Vancouver Island. Sydnee
Michaels of Temecula, Calif.
won last year’s event in Windsor, Ont.
Both the Canadian Junior
Boys and Girls Championships will be contested Aug.
1-5 at two different Lower
Mainland courses. The boys
will tee it up at Morgan Creek
in Surrey, while the girls play
at Quilchena in Richmond.
Last year, Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Toronto beat Taylor
Kim of Surrey by four shots
to win the junior girls title in
Camlachie, Ont.
Richmond Country Club
played host to last year’s Canadian Junior Boys tourney,
where Richard Jung of Toronto
won by a single shot. Surrey’s
Adam Svensson won the Canadian juvenile championship
at Richmond last summer.
Svensson will be back to defend the B.C. Amateur title he
won last summer at Castlegar
Golf Club. Svensson, at age 16,
became the youngest winner
of the B.C. Amateur last year
when he cruised to a five-shot
win. This year’s B.C. Amateur
is being held July 12-15 at The
Dunes at Kamloops.
The B.C. Women’s Amateur,
won by 11 shots last year by
Richmond’s Christine Wong,
goes June 28-July 1 at Alberni
Golf Club in Port Alberni.
The Canadian Women’s Tour
makes its annual visit to B.C.
May 17-18 at Squamish Valley
Golf Club. Last year, Ontario
pro Jessica Shepley won the
event at Quilchena.
Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin
capped a super summer by
winning the Vancouver Golf
Tour’s season-ending Vancouver Open last year. This year’s
event will be back at the three
City of Vancouver courses —
Fraserview, Langara and McCleery — and goes Sept. 4-6.
The Canadian Tour will be
making two stops in B.C. this
summer. The $200,000 TimesColonist Island Savings Open
goes June 2-5 at Uplands Golf
Club, while the Tour’s new
$125,000 Western Championship is scheduled for June 9-12
at Rivershore in Kamloops. ●

The social side of golf

numbers of them are turning
to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to spread
the word.
For Golf BC’s Hedley — whose

Nicklaus North and Gallagher’s Canyon — using sites like
Facebook and Twitter is simply an extension of work done
for the GolfBC website.
Out-of-the-way independently-owned courses like
Sandpiper, a scenic track
nestled beside the Harrison

even more heavily on sites like
Twitter and Facebook to help
drive traffic to their course.

“Everybody felt it a little bit

“Everybody has a great time.
It’s primarily word of mouth.
What impresses me is every

though we’re strangers there’s
instant camaraderie,” said
Ray Nielsen, organizer of one

It is the most terrifying moment in a golfing career this

Canadian Open
Easy does it
South African star Ernie Els headlines a stellar field at the RBC Canadian Open
BY Brad Ziemer
Vancouver Sun
It was one round of golf played
nearly 13 years ago, but Ernie
Els will never forget it.
Not so much the golf — he lost
his Shell’s Wonderful World of
Golf match with Fred Couples
at Nicklaus North in Whistler
on that summer afternoon in
1998 — but the scenery.
“It was beautiful,” Els says. “It
was a world like I had never
seen before. Coming from
South Africa, I’d never seen
mountains like those. It was
quite an eye-opener and I
remember Fred and myself really enjoyed our visit.
“I also remember saying I had
to get back there, but I haven’t
until now.”
Well, better late than never.
Els will be one of the headliners this summer when the
RBC Canadian Open returns
to Vancouver’s Shaughnessy
Golf & Country Club.

a good year, but I am looking
forward to contending in more
majors and see if maybe I can
pull one off.”
At age 41, Els knows time is
of the essence if he hopes to
add to the three majors he has
already won — the 1994 and
1997 U.S. Opens and the 2002
British Open. But he certainly
isn’t ready to surrender to
all those relative youngsters
who have crept by him on the
world golf rankings.
“No one is going to beat getting older, that’s for sure,” Els
says. “I have been around a
long time, but I am working as
hard as I ever have. I know the
younger guys maybe have a
little more gas in the tank, but
I feel great. I am in good shape
physically and if I can get a
little more consistent on the
greens I feel like I can still win.
I proved that last year. There is
still a lot of golf to play. Week
in and week out maybe the
younger guys have an advantage, but I’m 41, you know, I’m
not 50 yet. I still have some
time left.”
Els has one of those nicknames that seems to fit perfectly. Years ago, one of his
former sponsors hung The
Big Easy moniker on him and
it stuck. Initially, Els wasn’t
crazy about it, but he’s grown
comfortable with the handle.
After all, he is big — an imposing 6-foot-3, 220 pounds
— and easy describes both his
personality and his seemingly
effortless golf swing.
Sometimes, people mistake
Els’ laid-back personality with
a lack of desire. Els assured us
in an interview that couldn’t
be farther from the truth.
“I think that’s a bit of a mis-
conception,” he says. “I like
to be nice to people, obviously, treat them with respect.
There’s no reason to be an
ass to people that you don’t
know. I have won 60-something (64) events around the
world so I think I have proved
I have a very big competitive
streak in me.
“I play other sports, also. I
really don’t like to lose. The
game of golf is the type of
game where if you get so hard
on yourself you are never going to win. I like to take a little
stress out of it and maybe
relax a bit, but that doesn’t
mean I am not competitive or
not trying to win.”
And just because his rhythmic
swing looks so darn good, it
doesn’t mean Els doesn’t occasionally struggle with it.
“Golf is such a funky sport,
you know,” he says. “There are
so many different parts that
have to flow and be synchronized with each other and
I’ve got a long swing, quite
a big swing, and rhythm is
a big part of my golf swing
and thank goodness it hasn’t
changed too much. There are
days when ball position is a
little out of place or something else happens, but I’m
swinging it pretty nicely at the
moment and I understand my
swing quite well.”
For Scott Simmons, executive director of tournament
organizer Golf Canada, the
addition of Els and the rest
of Team RBC helps move the
Canadian Open to where he
hopes to take it.
“We want to be the best PGA
Tour event on the tour outside
of the majors, the world golf
championships and the TPC,
which we really can’t compete
with,” Simmons says. “But if
you strip those nine events
away we want to be the best
event on Tour. I think with
RBC’s help we have made so
many great strides.”
Simmons believes the addition of Els to the field this
summer will create significant
buzz for the event.
“I think he epitomizes what
the Tour would like to see in
their players,” Simmons says.
“He is a gentleman, he is a
class act, he represents the
game very well and he has
been consistent for many,
many years. In terms of
worldwide wins and earnings
he has to be up there. To have
a guy like that in our field I
think is fantastic. It will attract
a lot of spectators and hopefully he will be able to compete for the title.”
And Els will try to do just that
with a former Vancouver Canuck on his bag. Dan Quinn,
who has caddied on and off
for Els over the last couple
of years, has been invited by
Els to work the Shaughnessy
tourney.
“I think he’ll enjoy that,” Els
says of Quinn. “And he played
in Vancouver as well, so I
think he’ll fit in quite well.” ●

starting out
Prep time comes before tee time
By Lowell Ullrich
Range time isn’t simply a
matter of re-discovering your
swing technique with a bucket
of balls but following a dedicated pattern of target practice
combined with proper exercise long before even pulling
into the parking lot.
“Say a guy is a decent player
and takes the winter off. He
could start and by aiming incorrectly and with bad posture
he could ruin his whole year
of golf. Maybe forever,” Jonas
said.
“I start slow. The first few
shots are about fundamentals,
at a target. Once I’m happy
I start practising like I play;
driver, 8-iron. You get one shot
at it on the course. That’s how
you have to practice. Taking
a bucket of balls and hitting
away is the worst thing you
can do. And when I practice I
set a time limit.”
the Province
The weather’s better. The Masters are on TV. You book your
first tee time, take a couple of
practice swings to shake off
the rust and another golf season is underway.
Congratulations, you’ve just
made your first mistake of the
new year.
To anyone with an even halfdecent game a return to play
usually amounts to more than
a few range sessions prior
to your first round. Those
that know better say they’ve
seen an entire year destroyed
through bad preparation.
“A lot of our mistakes occur
before we even take the club
back,” longtime Lower Mainland teaching pro Philip Jonas
said.
Even range work, however,
can be compromised without
proper off-season exercise.
For Jonas, that includes carrying in his bag a rubberized
stretching device, called a Golf
Gym, he discovered by working with Vancouver golf fitness
trainer Jenny Grills.
“I promote a dynamic warmup as opposed to static
stretching. You want [exercise]
that’s always movementrelated, not strength training,”
said Grills. Hips, lower and
upper back, shoulders and
hamstring muscles are a good
place to start, she said.
A quick visit with a pro for
a proper club fitting is next,
and Jonas suggests emphasis
should be placed on your
driver and wedge. Once you
begin a regular cycle of play,
the trick is to not get discouraged after hitting the links for
the first time.
“A lot of people come back
strong because they have no
expectations,” said Jonas, a
teaching regular at Hazelmere
and McCleery who has his eye
on qualifying this fall for the
Champions Tour.
“Where they fail is the third
and fourth time out. You
should have very little expectations about what you got to
do.”
Above all else, however, is establishing good habits prior to
teeing it up for the first time.
“The old saying practice
makes perfect is not right.
Practice makes permanent,”
Jonas said.

So you want to play golf?
Like the game but not sure how to get started? A few pointers:
Equipment
Want ads are the definitive place
if you’re not sure but for those
willing to make an initial investment, figure on $100-300 for a
starter set of clubs before the
bag. Used balls are widely available. Tennis shoes are acceptable for beginners before making the first purchase of soft
spikes. Often overlooked: A coin
or marker, water and sunscreen.
Practice
Spring is for the driving range.
You’ll need every club in your
bag on the course, so practice
with every one of them on the
range. Start with a wedge and
move up to your driver as you
get more comfortable. Many
ranges have teaching pros
available offering a wide range
of lesson packages.
thinkstock
Starting out
Beginners will benefit from par-3
courses, such as Ambleside in
West Vancouver or Kensington
Fraserview
in Burnaby, to get started. Eaglequest has two courses in the
Lower Mainland, Coquitlam and
Coyote Creek in Surrey, where
the yardage becomes longer.
Musqueam, Fraserglen in
Abbotsford or Aberdeen Hills in
Kamloops are lengthier options.
Bcgolfpages.com offers a concise listing of links from which to
book a tee time. When you’re
ready to take the next step and
take on a full-length course, play
from the front tees.
Costs
Plenty of variables here once
you’re feeling comfortable
enough for a round, as operators
have a wide variety of sales
tactics. A reasonable par-3
course, Langley Golf Centre,
offers regular rates from $24-28.
Three Vancouver public courses,
Fraserview, McCleery and Langara, have regular adult rates of
$42.75. Twilight/sunset rates are
the best deal of course. If cost is
an issue, choose lessons over
equipment for starters, with
MCleery
group lessons being the best
bargain. Burnaby Mountain, for
example, is offering four, onehour range lessons starting at
$124.95.
Etiquette
It’s easy to get humbled if you
are unaware of the game’s finer
points. Here’s just a few:
• The player who is away hits
first, but a group which
agrees on ready play can
speed up a round.
• Don’t walk in the path of a
playing partner’s putting line.
• Stay quiet, except to acknowledge the good shots of others in your group. Don’t talk
while others are hitting. Leave
cell phones, and your worries,
at home. ●

White Hot:
Must-haves for your golf bag
TaylorMade’s new R11 driver is off to white-hot start
There are, of course, lots of other
hot new products out this spring.
Here’s a sampling:
RAZR SHARP: Callaway has partnered
with Italian auto maker Lamborghini to
create Forged Composite, the material
used in its new RAZR Hawk driver.
Callaway calls Forged Composite the
lightest, strongest, most precise material either company has ever used in
their designs. The material can be
forged to within 1/1,000th of an inch,
allowing Callaway engineers to introduce a proprietary approach to aerodynamic shaping called Streamline Surface Technology. This innovation is said
to reduce drag forces during a golfer’s
entire downswing, cutting energy loss
due to drag by 43 per cent and resulting in the highest driver head speeds
ever recorded by a 460cc Callaway
driver. Retails for about $450, which is
cheaper than a Lamborghini.
JUST FOR KIKKS: Abbotsford’s James
Lepp put a promising professional golf
career on hold to start his own golf
shoe company, Kikkor Golf, which
released its debut line of skater-style
shoes last spring. The company got a
nice response when it unveiled its 2011
line at the recent PGA Merchandise
Show in Orlando.
Kikkor is branding itself as an alternative shoe and clearly targeting younger
players.
Kikkor’s new Tenny line retails for $115.
BRONZED BEAUTIES: If looks have
helped create all the buzz about the
R11 driver, then you should be seeing
lots of Cleveland’s line of BRZ putters
on the greens this summer. Not only do
these putters look great, they are a relative bargain at about $99.
The entire head and hosel is done in a
deep bronze finish with a stylishly
contrasted copper-infused face insert.
Each BRZ putter comes with an oiltreated cloth for cleaning and maintenance. There are four models to choose
from: the BRZ 1 putter (Anser-style
blade); BRZ 2 putter (heel-shafted
mallet); BRZ 4.5 putter (slant-neck
blade); and BRZ5 (double-bend mallet).
You may still have your share of threeputts, but you’ll look good doing it. ●

Some are calling it the most popular new
driver since Callaway introduced its wildly successful Big Bertha line 20 years ago.
TaylorMade’s new R11 driver has all the
latest technological bells and whistles
that one would expect from a club that
retails for a cool $450. But what really
seems to have captured the imagination
of the golfing public is its distinct colour.
The R11’s white clubhead and black clubface has clearly struck a chord among
golfers.
Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane, who
happens to be an excellent golfer, must
be sitting by the phone waiting for TaylorMade to call and offer him and his former
Red Rider bandmates big bucks to use
their early 1980s hit “White Hot” to promote the club.

Grab your Swinkey,

Canadian Tour pro Brian Benedictson of Courtenay swings his new device, Swinkey.
Golfers who absolutely must have the
latest equipment or engage in the latest
novel concept to hit the game will make
some B.C. entrepreneurs happy this season.
Brian Benedictson would be focused on
another year playing on the Canadian
Tour were it not for the emergence of the
teaching aid product he designed, called
Swinkey.
Swinkey, said Benedictson, combines
many of the teaching aids he had purchased over the years that fit into a metal
pole weighing slightly twice as much as
a driver. The pole contains other swing
aides inside.
The 32-year-old got the product into the
bags of 92 PGA Tour pros last year, and
sales interest took off over the winter after
a trip to the PGA merchandise show in
Orlando, Fla.
“I definitely got a few comments of ‘damn
why didn’t I think of that,” said Benedictson, who received an order for 20,000 to
sell in Japan and has drawn interest from
GolfTown.
“I’m not quite cracking the champagne,
but its really starting to come together.” It
may at least pay the gas bills for the RV in
which Benedictson lived on while on the
CanTour last year.
Meanwhile, a Vancouver franchising
investment company, Aegis Investment
Management, has plans to debut a new
player in the west coast coffee house market, Links Golf Cafe.
John Harrison, chief operating officer for
the investment group, confirmed in an
email that Vancouver would be the first
Canadian franchise to open this summer.
The company’s website indicates that
Links will combine the use of four golf
simulators in a Coal Harbour restaurant
setting. ●

If you could only play
one round this year ...
Too many courses, too little time. That’s the lament of many B.C. golfers, who have a vast
selection of outstanding courses to play. We asked 10 prominent B.C. folks where they’d
like to play their one special round of golf in B.C. this summer. Here’s what they had to say:
Nancy
Greene
Raine:
Gold medalist in skiing
at the 1968
Winter Olympics in Grenoble. This Sun
Peaks resident is a Canadian senator.
Course: Harvest Golf Club,
Kelowna
Comment: “My favorite special
golf round is one I look forward
to every year. It’s when the
snow has melted and the apple
blossoms are in full bloom on
the Harvest Golf Course in
Kelowna. The course is wide
open and forgiving, but challenging at the same time. The
views from the upper holes are
spectacular, with Lake Okanagan shimmering in the distance,
but it’s the apple blossoms
lining many of the holes that
keep me coming back.”
Doug
Roxburgh:
13-time
winner of the
B.C. Amateur
Championship and a
member of
the Canadian
Golf Hall of
Fame.
Course: Ridge course at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon
Comment: “I have some good
memories of Predator as I played
in the opening-day event for the
orginal course. I remember the
course conditions were just ideal
and the weather was perfect.
Even on that opening day the
pro was talking about the spectacular property that was still to
be developed so I’ve been waiting for it for some time. From the
pictures and early reviews, the
new Ridge course looks outstanding.”
Chris
Gailus:
Anchor for
Global TV’s 6
p.m. newscast
Course: Tobiano, Kamloops
Comment: “I
can’t wait to play Tobiano and
have already made plans to go in
late May with my dad. Neither of
us are great golfers, but we enjoy
our rounds together and it
doesn’t get much better than in
the beauty of the ThompsonOkanagan overlooking Kamloops Lake. I’ve heard Tobiano is
challenging, so we’ll bring lots of
balls, but in this case scoring is
secondary to the scenery.”
Linda Hipp:
Founder, president and designer of LIJA, a Vancouver-based
company providing apparel for women in golf, tennis, active
and leisure.
Course: Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club, Roberts Creek
Comment: “I grew up around the course as it’s five minutes away
from our summer cabin in Roberts Creek. Besides the fact that the
course is situated in such a beautiful location, there is a strong
emotional attachment for me as my grandfather was one of the
club’s founders. I spent many afternoons, when I was younger,
visiting my grandparents up on the veranda après-golf! The front
nine is long and challenging but majestic as it winds through
beautiful tall trees. Once you finish No. 11, the holes becomes
shorter and you need to practise more target golf. And some of
the closing holes offer a fabulous west coast view as you look out

Comment: “For me, the picturesque par-5 second hole captures the essence of the Quail
course. You tee it up high, the
fairway is framed with woods on
both sides and there’s a trap on
left side to catch errant drives.
It’s a tough green to approach,
long and narrow and lined with
traps. Can make a birdie or a
snowman.”

Former LPGA

from Penticton who now
caddies fulltime on the
PGA Tour.
Course: Penticton Golf Club
Comment: “I love to return to
my home course every summer.
The holes provide a good challenge ... not length, but accuracy.
Walking the course is the best
way to enjoy it, I believe, and of
course the people there are
wonderful. I feel a bit like Norm
walking into Cheers when I’m
there so what’s not to love. Also,
it is always a fun place to hang
out after the round for some
food and drinks ... great view on
the patio.”
Tom
Larscheid:
Former B.C.
Lions running
back and
recently
retired colour
commentator
on Vancouver
Canuck broadcasts.
Course: Salmon Arm Golf Club
Comment: “Salmon Arm is a true
test of golf. There are many
side-hill and down-hill lies that
require a proper stance and
execution. Once you leave the
first tee box you won’t see
another house or condo. It’s a
beautiful layout where every
hole presents a different challenge. I love it, although I have
never scored that well there.”
Kerrin LeeGartner:
Rossland
native who
won the Olympic downhill
gold medal at
the 1992 Winter Games in
Albertville,
France. She has done TV commentary for both the CBC and
BBC.
Course: Greywolf, Panorama
Comment: “B.C. has some of the
best golfing in the world and I
find it tough to choose just one
that I would love to play this
summer. I’d like another crack at
Greywolf in Panorama. I’ve
played it once before and it is
very deserving of another round.
I found it mountainous, scenic
and tricky, but still playable. But
as every golfer knows, it isn’t
always the scenery or the course
that makes the round, it’s your
swing and the company.”
Dan
Russell:
Longtime
host of Sportstalk, heard
weeknights

on CKNW and
around the
province.
Course: Sagebrush Golf &
Sporting Club
Comment: “I absolutely love
how your golf carts are waiting
for you when you arrive, how
no one is on a clock and how
you can virtually play as much
golf in one day as you wish. I
love the seclusion, the incredible views of Nicola Lake, how
the layout allows you to tackle
each hole a number of different
ways, hitting into the largest
greens I’ve ever seen, and the
trueness of the putting. I even
liked the bunkers, and I never
like bunkers ... Most of all I’d
look forward to hitting off the
tee at 13, then going down to
the Hideout for a snack on the
dock while watching others fly
fish and then returning later
back to that lake afterwards for
a BBQ steak.”

Vancouver’s Ted Hunt, who’s
been playing golf for more
than 50 years, writes about
Hogan in his latest book, Ben
Hogan’s Short Game Simplified (Skyhorse Publishing).
And we’ve got five copies we’d
like to give away to our readers.
Hunt’s look at Hogan’s short

his spectacular putting game

photos and tips.
“In the hopes of persuading

Hunt. “But you have to know
that Ben Hogan is not a ‘quick

should be put in a context to
be best understood.
“A lot of golfers don’t have

of patience, you can change
your game significantly.”
One of Hunt’s suggestions,
gleaned straight from Hogan’s
game, is a beauty. “Learn and
ingrain Hogan’s Magical Device with a simple psych-lab
formula: Take 30 short putts
per day from six feet, and 30
short chips per day from 15
feet. Keep it up for one week
and amaze yourself. The
downside is that you will earn
the jealous enmity of your
friends -- who probably liked
you only because you kept
losing to them anyway. Hogan
had something very close
to this laboratory-proven
method by simply advising:
‘Practise with the Magical Device for 15 minutes per day for
seven days, and you’ve got it.’”

with equal grace.
Every day we make choices. And every day we’re forced to sacrifice. To give up
one thing for another. Well that ends here. The 2011 C-Class with Agility Control
automatically stiffens dampers through corners and softens them in less
demanding conditions to enhance passenger comfort. While the award-winning
available 4MATIC™ permanent all-wheel drive system and 10-way power
adjustable seats ensure neither tire nor lumbar ever slip. Meaning you never
have to sacrifice again. At least not between performance and luxury. Visit
your Mercedes-Benz dealer or mercedes-benz.ca/c to schedule a test drive.
