Experience our heritage
Pender County is rich in history. While many equate North Carolina with the Civil War, we
were the first colony to declare our independence. Here’s a heritage itinerary:
Missiles and More Museum
Did you know there wouldn’t be a space
race if it were not for the missile and rocket
technology developed and tested on Topsail
Island? Visit the building where rockets
were assembled. While you’re there, see the
pirate display. Blackbeard and Stead Bonnet
lurked in our waters.
Moores Creek National Battlefield,
Southeastern North Carolina’s only national
park is located in Currie. The first shots of
the Revolutionary War were fired between
Loyalists and Patriots. You’ve seen the
movie The Patriot? At Moores Creek, see
the bridge and experience history where
freedom was born.
Historic Downtown Burgaw
Our county seat of government, is an
iconic American town. Often called “Little
Hollywood,” Burgaw has set the stage for
numerous movies and productions. On the
heritage tour, don’t miss the Burgaw Train
Depot, the oldest train depot in the state.
The depot played an important role in the
Civil War.
Poplar Grove Plantation
Once the largest peanut plantation in
North Carolina, Poplar Grove Plantation
takes visitors back into the antebellum
period. Experience the life of a plantation
owner or a tenant farmer.
Did You Know...
Penderlea was the first planned farming
community to open in the U.S. under New Deal
legislation during the Great Depression era.
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited in 1937 and
‘kicked up her heels’ in square dance fashion with
the new residents.
visitpender.com
Penderlea Homestead
Was the first President Roosevelt New Deal
farming community. Farmers had land, a
home with running water and electricity, a
barn and more. The community thrived and
built a school, churches, and a community
center. It thrives today at Penderlea
Homestead Museum.
