Page 12 D ear readers, as alluded to in the last edition, Isuzu recorded its 25th consecutive year of Australian truck market leadership at the end of December 2013. We can now officially claim the achievement according to the industry figures*. Thank you once more to our loyal customers for their continued support of the Isuzu brand over the years. Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) is acutely aware that the Australian market is immensely competitive with quality products available from a wide range of manufacturers. Our company is committed to constantly improving our entire range of products and services and in turn offering customers the most rewarding ownership experience possible. We value your business. To celebrate the 25 year achievement, this edition contains a commemorative eight-page brochure that outlines the progression of Isuzu trucks since 1972 to current day – we hope you find it an interesting read. Those preferring a condensed version of the story should turn to pages four and five and see our illustration. In the following pages you’ll also find preliminary details of our soon-to-be-released Limited Edition F Series models. These models are fitted with a number of additional features that provide extra value for customers while offering a visual package that will set them apart from regular Isuzu models. And in other great news, several F Series ‘S’ models are also returning to the product line-up. Those readers who have been following our SBR 422 restoration will be pleased to know that the truck has been successfully completed and has already been used at a promotional event earlier this year. Please see our ‘Tech Torque’ pages for the latest details and photos. We also announce our current Truck of the Year grand final winner. The lucky owner of the FY Series has received a $5,000 Caltex StarCash fuel card. Given the current price of diesel, the card was very well received. Please go to page 23 for details of our next grand prize on offer, and you can read more about the winning vehicle on page 16 in a feature story. In other customer stories we take a look at HDT Australia and its highly specialised FYH 2000 which is equipped with a vacuum body and water tank. The versatile truck is used in the company’s underground drilling projects and is one of four trucks in the Isuzu-exclusive fleet. We then travel to Mudgee in New South Wales to look at some of the good work being done by the local ‘Rescue Squad’ with the help of its well-appointed FRR 600. Mudgee Rescue Squad saves the day Rounding out our operator stories is food distribution giant PFD Foods, in particular South Australian operations where the company has recently acquired two FVD 1000s to add to its extensive Isuzu truck fleet. FRR 600 to assist volunteers in emergency response. Page 14 Readers can also catch up with the latest Isuzu parts news and, tying in to the 25 years leadership achievement, we talk to some long-standing Isuzu truck dealers from around the country about their time and experience with the Isuzu brand. Isuzu’s reign atop the sales charts began in 1989 with the brand’s acceptance and popularity steadily growing ever since. According to Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) data, more than 138,000 Isuzu trucks have been sold in Australia over the past 25 years, and today approximately one in every four new trucks sold here wears the Isuzu badge. In 1989 the Isuzu model line-up featured 30 variants; 25 years on the model range offers over 160 variants, easily the broadest range of any truck brand in Australia. IAL Director and Chief Operating Officer, Phil Taylor, said the company was thrilled at reaching the milestone and was fortunate to have many loyal customers who have strongly supported the brand over the last two and a half decades. “We’d like to thank our loyal truck customers for Mr Taylor said celebrations would be modest and the brand was firmly focused on continued success well into the future. “There’s little time to celebrate. The competition grows stronger and we must remain steadfastly focused on continuing to provide the market with a broad range of high quality trucks, complemented by industry-best aftersales products and support services. If we do this strong sales results will continue to follow.” In the heavy market, Isuzu finished in fourth place achieving an 8.2 per cent share, with the company’s FY Series 8x4 range beginning to gain traction in the sales charts. Mr Taylor said he expected truck sales to increase in 2014 in line with an improving economy and greater business confidence. “IAL analysts are forecasting total market growth this year in the vicinity of five per cent,” he said. “Stability in Government, historically low interest rates and positive trending confidence all point to a more buoyant sales environment in 2014.” Overall 2013 was a challenging year for the truck market, with marginally fewer sales compared to 2012. According to official T-mark industry reports, Isuzu finished 2013 with a total of 6,814 truck sales and 22.2 per cent market share, almost 9 per cent (market share) clear of its closest rival. As well as taking out overall sales honours, Isuzu continued to dominate the light market with a total of 3,246 units for a 38 per cent share, while also comfortably leading the medium market with 2,657 units for a 39.9 per cent share. Current model F series. www.isuzu.com.au “There are very few companies across any product category that can claim 25 consecutive years of sales leadership, let alone in an industry as mature and competitive as the Australian truck market,” Mr Taylor said. their continued support in helping us achieve these excellent sales results over the years.” 4 TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 5 25 YEARS www.isuzu.com.au 6 NEWS FY SERIES REPORT NOW AVAILABLE If you’re considering investing in an Isuzu 8x4 FY Series truck you’ll be joining many satisfied customers who have already added the impressive new twin steer to their truck fleets. IRELAND’S DEALERSHIP CELEBRATES 90 YEARS OF SERVICE Twenty-thirteen marked a formidable milestone for Ireland’s in Cairns – 90 years of continuous ownership, operation and industry-leading customer service. A proud part of the Cairns community, Ireland’s has also enjoyed a close relationship with Isuzu Australia Limited during its 90-year reign, working closely with the company since it first appeared on Australian shores in 1972 offering ‘Bedford by Isuzu’. The story of Ireland’s impressive business history can be traced back to its young and industrious founder, Francis Ireland. At just 14 years of age, Francis started out work mending bicycle tyre punctures, progressing over time to bicycle mechanic, advanced motor mechanic and garage foreman. He soon opened the doors on his own venture, initially selling and repairing bicycles and motorcycles, then turning his expertise and dedication to repairing motor cars in 1923. Francis diversified into selling trucks in the late 1920s, and was stocking Chevrolet and Mapleleaf Trucks by the 1930s. TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 ERROR IN BINGO WASTE CAPTION! The last edition of Truck Power featured a story on the Bingo Waste Group. Unfortunately the story contained an incorrectly captioned photo. The caption identified the Bingo Waste team member as Sargon Raoul. The person actually pictured was Bingo Group Operations Manager, Daniel Tartak. Apologies to Sargon, Daniel and the Bingo Waste Group. Decades on the company is still represented by the Ireland family, and with over 130 employees in Cairns, they are proud to be a local business, run by true-blue locals. Joint Managing Director Richard Ireland says the company maintains the values their founder Francis Ireland stood for all those years ago. “As a multi-award winning business, one thing we impress upon our team is that the company is in the business for the long haul. Although we have over 90 years of experience under our belts, we know that only dedication to customer satisfaction and providing great value on all products and services will ensure our prosperity for the decades to come,” Richard said. IAL is proud to be part of Ireland’s long-running success and looks forward to continuing the relationship into the years ahead. 7 NEW RELEASES ISUZU TRUCKS LAUNCHES NEW ‘S’ MODELS AND LIMITED EDITIONS www.isuzu.com.au Isuzu Limited Edition models will be ideal for many applications including tilt tray work and for owners running full sized bodies. 8 Isuzu is celebrating the recent achievement of 25 consecutive years’ truck market leadership by introducing three new high power ‘S’ models to the medium duty F Series range, along with a special release of five value-added Limited Edition variants. TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 T he ‘S’ models comprise the FRD 600-S, FSD 700-S and FSD 850-S, and all feature a higher horsepower 7.8 litre SiTEC Series III engine producing 191 kW @ 2,400 rpm and 761 Nm @ 1,450 – 2,400 rpm (up 15 kW and 55 Nm from regular models). The three new ‘S’ models also offer a wider choice of transmissions and all feature rear Hendrickson HAS200 airbag suspension, making them ideal for sensitive load applications or those wanting a more supple ride. The FRD 600-S is rated at 11,000 kg GVM and 16,000 kg* GCM, and is available with either an Isuzu 6-speed manual transmission or an Allison LCT2500 fully automatic transmission. FSD 700-S and FSD 850-S trucks have a GVM rating of 12,000 / 14,000 kg and GCM rating of 18,000 / 20,000 kg respectively*, and offer buyers an even greater choice of transmissions. Along with the proven Isuzu 6-speed manual, buyers can also select from the versatile Isuzu second generation Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), or the Allison LCT2500 full automatic depending on the application. IAL Chief Engineer – Product Strategy, Simon Humphries, said the S models would be welcomed by many customers across a range of applications. “The new models will appeal to tilt tray operators who often tow a trailer to carry additional cars, and need extra power for the job,” Mr Humphries. “Similarly the additional power will benefit owners who fit full size van or tautliner bodies with very large frontal areas – these customers may require more power to maintain highway speeds in windy conditions. “The combination of a higher power engine and either Allison full automatic transmission or Isuzu AMT will appeal to any operator doing a lot of work in metropolitan and urban environments in heavy start and stop traffic.” Isuzu Limited Editions To coincide with its recent achievement of 25 consecutive years of Australian truck market leadership, Isuzu is building a limited quantity of 9 NEW RELEASES Rear Hendrickson HAS200 airbag suspension. IAL Marketing Manager, Jeff Birdseye, said the Limited Edition models provided customers with a great value offering. “The Limited Edition models are very competitively priced yet feature a number of impressive additions, particularly the alloy wheels and DRLs,” Mr Birdseye said. “Those who spend long hours in the cabin will also appreciate the premium speakers and satellite navigation – we expect these models to be quickly snapped up by value-conscious buyers who also want to stand out from the crowd.” It is anticipated that Limited Edition S models will be arriving in Isuzu Truck Dealer stocks over the next few months, but buyers are warned not to delay placing their orders as they will be eagerly sought. *Allison Auto model Gross Combined Mass (GCM) rating dependent on application approval. www.isuzu.com.au Along with the S model benefits listed earlier, the Limited Editions include a number of additional features. LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) are fitted in the front bumper for added road presence and visibility. The exterior package is completed with polished Alcoa alloy wheels and prominent Limited Edition badging. On the inside, the models boast upgraded two-way coaxial speakers, satellite navigation with truckspecific features, and a steering wheel-mounted remote control allowing drivers to access the many functions of the standard Digital Audio Visual Equipment unit without needing to remove their hands from the steering wheel. 10 FEATURE The FYH 2000 is well equipped for the job. HTD AUSTRALIA DRILLS FOR SUCCESS U nderground drilling specialists, HTD Australia, have been operating in the industry for over two decades and are no strangers to its high standards and the resultant need for safe, reliable and robust equipment. Located in Redcliffe, Queensland, the company specialises in horizontal drilling solutions for local, private and government based companies for large and small projects. HTD Australia has always focused on utilising the most advanced technology and equipment in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 The company’s clients prefer to use directional drilling services as it provides less traffic disruption, lower cost, deeper and/or longer installation, shorter completion times, directional capabilities and environmental safety. HTD Australia’s exclusively Isuzu truck fleet helps get the job done in the most efficient manner. “We pride ourselves in having the best available equipment in Horizontal Directional Drilling and our Isuzu trucks are no different when it comes to transporting that equipment,” HTD Director Zac Chisolm said. “Our latest addition, an 8x4 Isuzu FYH 2000, has high quality features such as premium driveline components from American brands, Meritor and Eaton.” Zac also nominated the truck’s load sharing front suspension, with its unique damped mechanical equalising rocker connecting the trailing end of the lead spring and the leading end of the second spring as another example. The FYH 2000 has been fitted with a vacuum excavation body used to analyse the location of the underground utilities/services, accomplished through water pressure produced by a highpowered vacuum machine. Location and guidance of the drilling is an important part of the drilling operation, as the drilling head is under the ground while drilling and, in most cases, not visible from the ground surface. Uncontrolled or unguided drilling can lead to substantial destruction, which can be eliminated by properly locating and guiding the drill head. The vacuum excavation body was built by Big Rig Industries located in Eagle Farm, Queensland, and is over 7.4 metres long. When looking for a new truck, Zac said he wanted a vehicle that was big enough for the vacuum body. “The Isuzu FYH 2000 with its 30,000 kg GVM rating meets our needs for a truck big enough not only for the vacuum body, but also to accommodate the water mass the body holds when on the job.” Zac has five other Isuzu trucks in his fleet, a Giga CXY 455, FVZ 1400 Long and FVR 900 with tray bodies, a FSR 850 Long with a vacuum excavation unit and an NQR 450 with a service body, all used to transport and service heavy underground drilling machinery. Zac said he didn’t look at any other truck brand except Isuzu. “I’ve always used Isuzus - they are very reliable!” he said. “I’m so familiar with the Isuzu brand I couldn’t bear to use another truck manufacturer. “Isuzu’s service is also impeccable and there’s always someone available to help if required, wherever I am in Australia. “I plan to keep my fleet exclusively Isuzu for as long as I run my business.” Horizontal underground drilling is a multi-million dollar industry in Australia governed by stringent safety and environmental regulations. It’s employed to install underground pipes, conduits and cables with minimal impact on the surrounding area and is commonly used when trenching or excavating is not practical or would be disruptive. www.isuzu.com.au HTD Vac/HDD Operator, Matthew Thompson 11 12 FEATURE MUDGEE RESCUE SQUAD SAVES THE DAY (l-r) Mudgee Rescue Squad volunteers Geoff Hawes, Philip Blackman, Brian Wells, Garry Dollisson and Errol Grieve. A ffiliated with the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association and a totally volunteer organisation, the Mudgee Rescue Squad has 21 members and is the primary response rescue unit for Mudgee and surrounds in the Mid-Western Regional Council. The Squad is accredited by the NSW State Rescue Board to conduct rescue, general land, water and vertical rescue operations. It is equipped to assist with a range of situations, such as those relating to motor vehicle, aircraft and rail accidents and water rescue, as well as search operations which can often extend over several days or even weeks. TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 The Mudgee Rescue Squad also assists other emergency services as requested such as Police, NSW Ambulance Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service and SES, with tasks including traffic control, incident scene security, providing lighting, setting up helicopter landings and communication work. The Squad also assists fire crews with road closures, door knocking and advising residents to evacuate. Operating 24/7 the team can be contacted via a 000-controlled paging system and mobile phone text messaging service. According to Squad Secretary, Garry Dollisson, the new Isuzu is a great replacement. “The FRR 600 carries all our rescue equipment. As it’s a crew cab it takes up to seven people. This is essential as we must always have at least two accredited crew members at each job plus additional crew,” Mr Dollisson said. “The truck body contains many compartments in which we store equipment, an LED lighting system, generator, air bags and hydraulic equipment. A walkway down the middle of the truck body allows us to get easy access to our equipment and store our ladder. “The truck has also been equipped with new radio communication equipment as well as a fridge and microwave which permits temporary catering when we are on a job for a long period of time. “So far the truck goes along beautifully. It’s a pleasure to drive, very easy to operate and extremely responsive. It’s our main vehicle so it gets driven in many conditions,” Mr Dollisson said. “When selecting a new truck we had a list of requirements we needed to meet. We looked at three different trucks before choosing the Isuzu FRR 600. “The Isuzu appealed to us because we had such a good run out of our old truck. It has just been sold privately to somebody who will use it as a campervan to travel around Australia.” Mr Dollisson said the Mudgee Rescue Squad is very thankful for the community’s help in purchasing the new truck. “We created a portfolio to explain to the community why we needed a new truck. We went to different organisations, businesses, services and the media to spread the word,” he said. “The local Mudgee High School year 12 students raised over $20,000 from their end-of-year event and other organisations and services held special fund raising days just for our rescue truck. “Once we purchased the truck, Mudgee Complete Steel built the body to suit our equipment and needs. They did an excellent job. “We couldn’t have done it without the community’s support and help.” 13 Mudgee Rescue Squad has enhanced its ability to deal with emergencies in and around the rural town following the replacement of its 29 year old Isuzu with a new Isuzu FRR 600 crew cab, purchased from money donated by local residents and businesses. The FRR’s body features ample storage areas. www.isuzu.com.au 14 FEATURE FOOD DISTRIBUTION GIANT EXPANDS ISUZU FLEET With more than 150 years in the Australian food distribution industry, it’s no surprise many large and well-known food manufacturers go to PFD Food Services for their food distribution needs. P FD’s roots can be traced to the 1860s when J Hill and Son established the company as fresh fish merchants. These days, PFD has one of the largest privately owned food service fleets in Australia, and each day the company’s fleet delivers fresh, frozen and dry goods to over 40,000 businesses across Australia. The company has 61 state-of-the-art branches strategically located throughout Australia to maximize its coverage. PFD has aligned itself with the leaders in food manufacturing such as Kraft Foods, D’oro, Nestle, Peters, McCain, Ingham and more. The South Australian division has a fleet of 66 Isuzus, 41 of which operate from its Adelaide branch. The Isuzu trucks range from the smaller NPR 400 and NRQ 450s to the larger FRR 550, FRR 600, FVR 950, FVR 1400, FVL 1400 and FVZ 1400s. In addition, PFD recently took on a delivery of two new Isuzu FVD 1000 Long trucks and a FRR 600 AMT. According to SA Transport Manager, Mark Davies, Isuzu trucks are a big favourite at PFD. “The use of Isuzu vehicles, combined with the first-rate maintenance service provided by Sebastian Regorius and his team at Adelaide Isuzu, ensures we achieve maximum utilisation of our fleet and provide the most effective service to our customers,” Mark said. “The FVD 1000’s equipment is very user-friendly and allows us to meet our stringent safety requirements. “We chose the added reversing camera option which works a treat with the truck’s digital audio visual equipment unit. “The drivers really enjoy getting into the Isuzu cabs as they are spacious and quite comfortable, minimising the fatigue experienced in such a fast paced service industry. “The FVD 1000 truck includes an Isri 6860 air suspension driver’s seat – its extensive range of adjustments makes it perfect for long drives. Also aiding the ride is the Hendrickson airbag rear suspension.” TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 15 John Brownsea, PFD Delivery Driver for O’Halloran Hill, South Australia. On a day-to-day basis and depending on model, the trucks transport between two and 10 tonne loads with a maximum of 12 pallets for bulk transport services. and cost savings. The rest of the Isuzu fleet features manual transmissions. All the new trucks in the fleet have purpose-built van bodies with fridge/chiller capabilities and are manufactured by Therma Truck body builders in Smithfield, New South Wales. PFD stands apart from many of its competitors through technology development. As major supermarkets move towards electronic trading requirements, PFD has introduced Radio Frequency (RF) scanning to generate real time transactions for its retail warehouse customers. The van bodies are fitted with sliding divider walls which can expand or minimise the refrigerated area for flexibility. PFD also installs racking to hold goods in place. The introduction of RF scanning requires all stock entering the warehouse to have two barcodes on each pallet, the first to identify our retail customer’s stock and the second provides the PFD item. PFD opted for the Allison auto transmission in the FVD 1000 and is pleased with the performance National Fleet Manager, Steve Wright, said PFD looks forward to continuing the relationship with Isuzu. “Isuzu’s customer service over the years has been faultless, especially when dealing with North East Isuzu in Adelaide,” Steve said. “They understand our business and meet our requirements with minimal downtime. “Isuzu trucks are ideal for the food distribution industry; they have a clean and presentable design which complements PFD’s corporate look and feel. “They are well equipped and help us get the job done with no issues. We will definitely look to add more Isuzu trucks to the fleet as the business expands.” www.isuzu.com.au 16 FEATURE EFFICIENT ISUZU 8X4 KEEPS RAYMAR HIRE ON THE GO New Isuzu FYJ 2000 is ticking all the right boxes for experienced construction contractor. TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 17 Raymar Hire Owner Ray Engles and his new Isuzu FYJ 2000 8x4. A s an excavation and industrial bin hire company, Raymar Hire needs to ensure manoeuvrability around tight work sites efficiently and without damaging buildings, pipes and overhead wires. To do so, the South Australian business uses its new Isuzu FYJ 2000 8x4 with a 25 tonne Hiab Multilift LHZ roll-on roll-off waste bin lifter truck. Owner, Ray Engles, uses his Isuzu truck almost daily in his contracting to high-end building businesses, to deliver large bins and transport his excavation equipment. “I complete trenching for sewers, electrical and storm water. I also do contracting work at schools completing new buildings and storm water and waste areas,” Ray said. “I have all of the tools to get into backyards and other small areas as well. I really enjoy the work. “I have been digging for 25 years and my experience provides me with the knowledge to avoid damaging existing infrastructure when I’m completing a job. I am an experienced specialist in mini excavators and skid steer loaders and have very precise control over these machines. “The machines I use allow me to dig trenches and then also remove soil in one go. The truck lets me carry the excavator and other machines in the roll-off bin.” Functioning similar to a tipper, the hook lift bin truck body lowers to allow Ray to put bins on the ground and drive his excavator out the back of the truck. “This set up is much more convenient and efficient. It’s also easier on my body and I can get home earlier at the end of the day – I’m off the job in just ten minutes. I don’t need to put ramps down, I just drive the machines straight into the back of the bin and go,” Ray said. “I didn’t want a basic truck. Just 24 hours after test driving the truck I made the decision to purchase it. I said, ‘that’s the truck’,” he said. “I also installed LED flashing lights on top, lambswool seat covers, customer 200 kilogram slide-out tool box and a bullbar so it really stands out on the roads. “I had a great experience with the dealership, North East Isuzu. Salesman, Jason Abella, is the most sincere sales person and works extremely hard to please his customers. Rock Pinneri and David Di Lorenzo from the dealership’s engineering department were also great to deal with and assisted me in modifying the FYJ 2000 8x4 to suit my needs.” Ray said although the Isuzu FYJ 2000 was a relatively new model to the Isuzu line-up when he was in the market, he didn’t have any hesitations in choosing this truck. “I have two other Isuzu trucks that I’ve been extremely happy with and I know the FYJ 2000 8x4 is built like a tank – it won’t let me down,” he said. “I did my homework and drove a lot of the new models available in the same class. However I felt that when I drove the Isuzu FYJ 2000 8x4 it stood out. It was extremely easy to drive and the Allison automatic transmission was a breeze. “Isuzu produced a great product with the FYJ model. It’s a pleasure to drive, luxurious and ticked more boxes than its competitors. There are no downfalls to this truck, it does everything I want it to. I have driven trucks for over 30 years and I just love this truck. I couldn’t speak more highly of it. “As with other Japanese trucks, Isuzus are built to carry a good load and and have a flat nose, which I like.” According to Ray, not having to refuel the Isuzu FYJ 2000 8x4 with AdBlue was also a great benefit of this truck. “The truck is very well balanced for the 5 to 7.5 metre bins that fit so well on the back.” “I did investigate the pros and cons of AdBlue, however I came to the conclusion that AdBlue is an extra product to purchase, additional chassis space and weight to carry with its tank and so forth,” Ray said. As an owner operator, Ray required a truck that could also double as a mobile advertisement for Raymar Hire. “I couldn’t be happier with the overall package. It’s a really nice truck, it’s as simple as that.” www.isuzu.com.au “The FYJ 2000 8x4 is nine metres long and very manoeuvrable. It’s much easier than driving and navigating a truck and trailer set-up around a job site. 18 INDUSTRY INSIDER DEALERS LOOK BACK ON ISUZU’S 25 YEARS OF MARKET LEADERSHIP Isuzu boasts the largest and most professional truck dealer network in Australia with over 60 outlets and branches nationwide, so who better to speak to about Isuzu’s history-making time at the top than those at the frontline. Here’s what a selection of senior dealership personnel had to say about the brand’s points of difference and standout models of the past few decades. 1973 KS 21 1999 FVZ 1400 Terry Jewson Dealer Principal, Patterson Cheney & Westar Trucks, VIC Time in the industry: 32 years “The first truck that comes to mind as a stand-out is the FSR 500. It was a very popular truck, it did its job and never let us down. The other truck that remains in my memory is the FVR 900 which gave us an entry into the eight tonne market, in particular the refrigeration side of things. “To put it simply, Isuzu offers customers reliability and support. You’ll know when you buy an Isuzu truck you’re going to get looked after, and if anything goes wrong the support is there. “I think IAL will continue to do well in coming years regardless of competition, we’ve got a strong reputation and programs and systems in place to make sure the company is constantly improving and developing.” Isuzu pioneers the ‘ready-to-work’ truck with its 2005 NPR 200 Tradepack. Current model FY Series is providing access to new markets. Gary Melrose Dealer Principal, Gilbert and Roach, NSW Time in the Industry: 39 years Greg Smith Group Sales Manager, Brisbane Isuzu, QLD Time in the industry: 17 years “The first two Isuzu models we were selling were the SBR 450 and the KS 21. Some other truck brands we were selling back then would do less than 20,000 km and need a full engine rebuild, but with the Isuzu trucks they’d do 250,000 km and we wouldn’t have to touch the engines. “The introduction of a ready-to-work truck like the NPR 200 Medium Tradepack some 10 years ago had a significant impact on the market, as it offered a practical alternative at an affordable price for tradesmen looking for a work vehicle other than a traditional ute. “The truck that has really stood out for me over the years is the SBR 422 which came out in the late 70s. Those things were bulletproof, you’d sell them and they wouldn’t break. Customers would start them in the morning, turn them off in the afternoon and they’d go every day. “We are seeing another buying segment emerge with the introduction of the FY 8x4 and 10x4 range as well; it’s really captured another level of the market. “Isuzu has continued to offer customers reliability during those 25 years, and they have the right attitude to fixing vehicles and keeping customers on the road. If they maintain those key principals they should be able to maintain market leadership for another 25 years.” “No other manufacturer has such a broad range of trucks and that definitely gives Isuzu the advantage over competitors, but I think we’ve got to still be on our toes in the coming years and not just rely on our previous results.” TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 Bob Pearce Dealer Principal, Major Motors, WA Time in the industry: 43 years “One of the trucks that has stood out for me over the years is the FVZ 1400. It wasn’t initially one of our most popular trucks but it ended up becoming one of our biggest sellers because it epitomised the reliability of Isuzu and was perfectly suited to the applications customers were specifying it for. “We’ve also been really impressed recently with the FY Series as it’s opened up new opportunities in the heavy market for us, such as larger concrete mixers and a range of transporters that need the front axle load-sharing capability the FY provides. “Without a doubt, Isuzu has been an extremely reliable product over the years and it’s had the back-up from Isuzu management and the exceptional aftermarket care and support services they offer. They’ve done a wonderful job in ensuring the right trucks are coming into Australia for the right applications.” 19 IAL WORLD LONG-STANDING ISUZU DEALERSHIP MERGES TO A ONE-STOP TRUCK FACILITY One of Isuzu Trucks’ most successful and oldest South Australian dealerships, OG Roberts & Co, has joined forces with another truck dealership, J & B Inter and expanded its facilities to provide even better service for the Mount Gambier and Western District of the Victorian region. R enamed OGR Trucks, the $3 million redevelopment is situated on a one hectare site on Jubilee Highway West only 800 metres from the original dealership. It can be accessed from both directions of the highway. J & B Inter, under the ownership of John King, has also run a very successful heavy truck operation with various truck manufacturers over three decades. In fact John actually did his truck apprenticeship with O G Roberts and sold Isuzu trucks prior to forming his new company. The new state-of-the-art facility opened its doors last year on November 6, and accommodates all trucking requirements including sales, servicing and parts for commercial vehicle weight segments from utilities to B double prime movers and everything in between. Prior to the merger, both dealerships employed some of the most experienced people in the industry, so the merger has combined a highly knowledgeable outfit at OGR Trucks. The new premises offer truck operators a brand new showroom, open display for parts products, large parking area, and a reception featuring an adjoining customer lounge with private sleeping quarters and outside balcony – ideal for truck operators to use while their trucks are being serviced. In addition, the facilities also comprise ten service bays with four pits including a full length 20 metre drive through state-of-the-art pit which allows for faster B double service turnaround time. (l-r) IAL Director and COO, Phil Taylor; OGR Trucks Director, John King; OGR Trucks Dealer Principal, Peter Roberts and IAL Managing Director and CEO, Mike Yoda. OGR Trucks Phone number: 08 8725 7999 Email: [email protected] “In the past due to lack of accessibility at our old site, we were servicing prime movers but the trailers had to be split and serviced at J & B Inter. Now we do it all together which saves time and money for our clients. The dealership is managed by OG Roberts dealer principal, Peter Roberts, and co-founder of J & B Inter, John King. “We were stretched to the limits with our trucks division prior to the merger, so with it moving to another location, we now have more space to enhance our vehicle selection and can provide more bulk parts storage, parking and service facilities for our customers. OG Roberts has been in operation over 50 years and has dominated the medium truck market as well as having been a major player in the heavy prime mover market in the Mount Gambier district. “It’s also a big win for the trucking industry and shows great confidence in the future of southeast Australia, particularly in the timber industry and related freight options. The original dealership was established in 1956 by Owen G Roberts and today, with the help of his son, Peter, and grandson, Bryce, the dealership has become a great success story. “The OGR Trucks team looks forward to continuing its successful relationship with Isuzu for many years to come.” www.isuzu.com.au Location: 203 Jubilee Highway West Mount Gambier SA 5290 OGR Trucks Director, Peter Roberts, said the new dealership enables its team to provide even better quality service to customers all under a one-stop-shop. 20 TECH TORQUE ‘HERITAGE TRUCK’ TRUCKPOWER SUMMER 2013/2014 ON THE ROAD AGAIN 21 It’s taken a lot of time, sweat and patience, but Isuzu’s fully-restored SBR ‘Heritage Truck’ is now officially back on the road, looking every bit as impressive as its first day off the factory floor in 1979. The tired SBR as found two years ago. T his iconic Aussie ‘workhorse’ is widely credited for laying the strong foundations for Isuzu’s future growth in the Australian market, so it’s only fitting the rebuild was completed in time for IAL’s 25 consecutive years’ Australian truck market leadership celebrations. At the time it entered the market, the Isuzu SBR was a relative newcomer, competing against products from several established North American and British brands. Offering simplicity, reliability and the ability to get the job done, it soon became the leading mediumduty truck on Australia’s roads. Complete restoration of the Isuzu SBR has been a two-year project undertaken by the IAL Product Development Department in Port Melbourne. All mechanical and assembly work was performed in-house whilst key industry partners were engaged for specialised jobs such as the cab panel work and body build. Purchased with a suspected 1.3 million kilometres on the clock (odometer reading 300,000) from the outskirts of Melbourne, the truck was definitely showing its age but provided a sound starting point for the restoration. Testament to the SBR’s tough nature, the driveline needed no significant mechanical attention, but was given a fuel system recondition which included injectors and a well overdue freshen up of the mechanical injection pump. After a good hot wash, some new gaskets, a paint job and a trip to the electroplating factory, the old 6BB1 both runs and looks like a new engine. The interior and exterior truck cabin and tray body was another story however. To return it to the condition in which it rolled out of the old assembly plant in Dandenong, Victoria, all rust, dents and blemishes were removed and repaired and the cab was then finished in classic Isuzu white. The interior received even more attention with new door trims, seat covers, roof lining and floor vinyl required, all completed in the fashionable (for the time) signature blue hue. With the cabin refitted to the chassis, the intricate task of installing the rest of the trim as well as the vital electrics began, including fitting refurbished wiring harnesses. In keeping with the era of the truck, a custom-built body featuring a Tasmanian oak floor was fitted including incandescent lighting, and all secured to the chassis with period-correct but often cursed ‘U’ bolts. The SBR in its fully-restored glory looks every bit as good as when it left the assembly plant 35 years ago, a result that would not have been possible without the hard work of IAL technicians, and the support and expertise of Isuzu’s industry partners and suppliers. This new old truck will find its place at future truck shows and IAL events to raise awareness of Isuzu’s heritage in Australia, and to honour the company’s legacy of providing reliable, tough trucks to market. Interior looks showroom fresh Thanks to the hard work of the Product Development Team and the following industry partners for their assistance: Austruck Truck Bodies B and K Panels FleetMark Michelin Narva Renix Auto Trimmers www.isuzu.com.au Despite a long hard life, the chassis was still in reasonable condition− requiring only a good wash, some sandblasting and very minor repairs. The new, improved SBR back on the road. 22 IAL PARTS & SERVICE OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW If you’re looking to repair an existing engine or cab on your Isuzu truck, it’s often worth looking into the cost and time advantages of a complete replacement versus a repair. Whether it’s a smash repair or an older truck needing an engine overhaul, IAL has a healthy stock of engines and cabs available for quick and affordable replacements. When replacing your engine or cab through Isuzu, you’ll also have the peace of mind that comes from an OEM warranty and knowing your vehicle has been fitted with genuine parts manufactured to the correct OEM specifications. WINNER WINNER SHIFTY AND DEB SHELDON – NPS 300 BOSS HAULAGE – FYH 2000 8X4 TIGER WASTE – FVZ 1400 Queenslanders, Shifty and Deb Sheldon, have converted their new Isuzu NPS 300 4x4 into a much loved motorhome. ACT-based haulage and excavation specialist, Boss Haulage, recently added an Isuzu FYH 2000 8x4 to its fleet sporting a brilliant red paint job with orange and white pin striping, in line with the company colours. Canberra skip bin hire and waste collection business, Tiger Waste, is the proud owner of a colourful Isuzu FVZ 1400. Fitted with a WestTrans MXS 150 skip bin loader, the FVZ is able to pick up and transport the business’ orange skip bins, sizes ranging from 2-12 cubic metres, to residential and commercial customers throughout Canberra and surrounding regions. According to Shifty, the pair chose the 4x4 truck so they could explore areas that regular caravans cannot. “We purchased the Isuzu NPS 300 4x4 for the reliability, knowing we can go off-road and return safe and sound. Only Isuzu is good for that,” Shifty said. “The slide-on body is a Palomino Camper from Palomino Australia and we installed ALI fuel and water tanks under the camper, which were built by Lev’s Fabrication Aluminium in Queensland. “On the truck we carry 240 litres of fuel, 265 litres of water and 65 litres of petrol for the generator. Additionally, on top of the camper we have 3-150kW solar panels. To complement the cab, the truck features a grey body with the same pinstripe highlights, chrome rims and tinted windows. Purchased from Canberra Isuzu, the new FYH 2000 8x4 has been dubbed ‘Lazy Suzy’ by Boss Haulage, who has painted the name across the front of the truck’s cab. The FYH 2000 8x4 joins an Isuzu FRR 500 Tipper, which was also recently purchased and received the same cosmetic treatment. “When purchasing the truck we considered all major truck brands that could service our weight and body requirements. We also looked at the vehicle’s operating cost, availability, cost of spare parts and support provided by local dealers. Our local dealer, Canberra Isuzu, was miles apart from its competition in all aspects,” Lee Carmody said. “We chose the FVZ 1400 as it provides sufficient carrying capacity and power. Our trucks generally work in a city environment and it’s important they can easily manoeuvre through narrow streets and confined construction sites. We sought a vehicle that provided a comfortable work environment for drivers while ensuring they are supported by a range of safety features, including ABS, hill start aid, cross locks and a hands-free telephone system.” www.isuzu.com.au “Inside our Isuzu we have three cameras – one to show what is behind us, one to monitor the inside of the camper when we go off road and one under the truck to view our running gear.” TRUCK OF THE YEAR TRUCK OF THE YEAR 23 ISUZU TRUCK NETWORK * DENOTES ISUZU SERVICE & PARTS ONLY LOCATION QUEENSLAND Brisbane (Archerfield) Brisbane (Burpengary)
