Dear Members,
MIID World Interiors Day
Greetings
from
MIID
and Council!
It’s
been
six
months
since our last
Newsletter and a lot has happened since
the beginning of the year at MIID.
On working closely with Authorities,
Legislative Bodies and Allied Professions,
much had been achieved since the start
of Council Year 2014 - 2015 till now. This
year alone had seen the request from
Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) to MIID
for nomination of Panel Members to be
on the Examination Board in preparation
Learn about this event which engage in
professionals, national organisations,
design enthusiasts and the general
public to explore creativity, imagination,
vision and passion in relation to the
role of Interiors in society, culture and
our future built environments.
In keeping with my Manifesto setforth for
onwards. MIID representatives had also
been in the CAAEM Panel of ID Education
playing their active roles in contributing
towards the evaluation of ID Schools and
curriculum in the education sectors.
MIID Interiors Heritage
Initiative
more than 1 year ago, I am very pleased
to inform Members that MIID is well on the
way to achieving what had been planned
sittings, whereby a regular Council
meeting would stretch from 5.30pm well
into midnight to complete all the items
listed in the agenda.
Since January 2015, the Membership
Committee had managed to clear a
large number of applications in all
categories, with Ordinary Corporate
Members requiring the most attention of
all. I would however like to note that whilst
the number of applicants approved had
number who had not renewed their
Ordinary Corporate Membership status
with MIID and consequently have had
their membership status revoked after
several reminders were sent out to them
without any reversion.
In the other category of Memberships,
the Student Membership saw the most
recruitment drive campaign, bringing the
total to over 2000 Student Members. I
would like to thank the Education and
Membership Committees as well as the ID
Schools for their hard work and support on
this matter. This success was celebrated
together with MIID’s celebration of World
Interiors Day which was held on 30 May
2015 at the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala
Lumpur Library in conjunction with events
like the Reka Session and Heritage Trails
amongst others. The theme set forth by
the International Federation of Interior
Architects/ Designers (IFI) this year was
‘Design For All’ and in tandem with all
Interior Designers across the world, MIID
observed the theme in unity with all who
had celebrated in the effort to promote
awareness of the profession as one.
On Professional Practice matters, MIID
had been working closely with LAM in
bringing to task the unregistered persons
who professed to be IDs of superlative
abilities and offering Interior Design
services in Malaysia. In addition, the Scale
of Fees for IDs is now being discussed
with LAM for inclusion into the Architect
Rules.

In conjunction with World Interiors
Day 2015, MIID is proud to present the
Interiors Heritage Trail to its members.

of ensuring the conservation of all
legacies with regards to the interiors
of the built environment.

MIID had also been working closely with
Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL)
on areas of which the ID can assist an

and participates actively in the Anugerah

Co-operation between Allied Professions
had taken the form of Flood Relief
Corporate Social Responsibility with
Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and
Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and
joint Heritage discussions at committee
levels the past year. It shall continue with
momentum for the rest of the Council
term.

It is at our Reka Sessions that Members are offered talks related
to ID without charges as a form of return amongst the many others
President, I had deliberately shifted the Reka Sessions’ focus from
being a purely design based series like last Council, to a more
practice orientated one as I felt our Members needed serious

On the international level, MIID had managed to play a bridging
role in APSDA by bringing back into the fold Thailand Interior
Design Association (TIDA). MIID also presented at the APSDA
the meeting, MIID had also tabled the proposal to formalise
APSDA and had been tasked to chair the Protem Committee on
this matter, leading to it being tabled at the 2016 APSDA General
Assembly in Adelaide, Australia.
It is also at our Reka Sessions that our supporting Industry
Partners get the opportunity to demonstrate their support for the
ID industry by participating in MIID’s sponsorship programme, in
addition to our Corporate Partnership programme which promotes
from Members is inadequate to run the Secretariat and we would
appreciate Members contributing their time, like all Council,
to help serve and strengthen MIID and subsequently our own
profession in the long run. They can provide constructive and
objective suggestions with the realisation that an MIID with
disintegrated membership will lead to the undoing of all the hard
work and long way, from which all ID had reached at this point in
Malaysia. Most of all, least we all forget, I would like to remind all
that our MIID is still very much an infant as we move into our only
4th year of existence and should never be expected to function
like some other more established institutes.
Last but not least, I wish all Members well for the rest of the
year and look forward to meeting you at our Annual Ball and
Reka Conference in Oct 2015.

Saturday and Exhibitions. On this note, I would like to express
Council’s and my appreciation to all the Industry Partners who
had supported MIID’s programmes for 2014 - 2015. The success
of MIID’s activities would not have been possible without all your
kind support.
This coming October will be a very busy month for MIID as we hold
our 4th Annual Ball planned for 30 Oct 2015 and our International
Reka Conference scheduled for 31 Oct 2015, themed ‘A Sense
of Place’, which features regional reknowned speakers from the
design and related disciplines. October is also earmarked as the
Kuala Lumpur Design Month and MIID had designated both the
above mentioned events as part of the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala
Lumpur’s (DBKL) month long festivities, in addition to hosting a
selected section of the Students’ Saturday event in support of
DBKL.
About MIID
The Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) or
Pertubuhan Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (PPDM) is the
national institute representing the interior design profession
in Malaysia. It is an amalgamation of two previous bodies
namely, Interior Designers Institute of Malaysia (Institut
Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia or IPDM) and the
Malaysian Society of Interior Designers (MSID).

society of Malaysians who are conversant and

MIID NIPPON PAINT REKA AWARDS 2015
The
Malaysian
Institute of Interior
Designers
(MIID)
announced
the
MIID REKA Awards
2015, a premier
interior
design
awards event of
Malaysia, created
to further enhance
and elevate the
standards
of
interior design by
acknowledging
and
honouring
excellence in the
profession.
This year marked the second successful
year of collaboration between MIID and
Nippon Paint (M) Sdn Bhd for REKA
Awards. With Nippon Paint’s presence as
Category) and also 60-Branding Partner,
the Awards are now rebranded as the
MIID Nippon Paint REKA Awards.
The MIID Nippon Paint REKA Awards
2015 are conferred to MIID Professional
Members who are practicing Interior
Design and are registered with the
Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM), as
well as MIID Students Members from
Interior Design Schools in Malaysia.
Submission is open for works completed
between 1 January 2012 till 30 June that
best exemplify the quality and pursuit of
excellence in Interior Design.
The Reka Awards open for submissions
from 2 July up till 4 September 2015.
Successful
submissions
will
be
announced and honoured at the MIID
Annual Ball and Awards Night 2015,
which is scheduled for 30 October 2015.

to submit entries can obtain further

MIID NIPPON PAINT REKA AWARDS 2015
This year, MIID is honoured to be graced
by prominent Judges consisting of
renowned personalities from the Interior
Design industry. MIID Nippon Paint
REKA Awards Organising Chairman /
Convenor and Council Member, Ar. Lim
Pay Chye said, “All the three judges are
of design and their in-depth knowledge
will be valuable in their assessment for all
the entry categories. The panel of Judges
will be judging based on creativity, design
concept, space planning, space utilisation,
and buildability as well as the creative
use of materials and sustainability /
environmental
consideration.”
With
the presence of such distinguished
professionals, MIID is looking forward to
a really prestigious and knowledgeable
selection of winners for the MIID Nippon
Paint REKA Awards 2015.

World Interiors Day Celebration 2015
T
he MIID annual World Interiors Day,
held in the second quarter of each
year is an international level gathering
to acknowledge the Interior Design
professionals and their industry partners.
Held at the Auditorium of the Kuala
Lumpur Library on 30 May 2015, the event
was attended by VIPs, corporate partners,
sponsors, media and MIID Council
Members.
The MIID World Interiors Day is held
simultaneously on a chosen day of the
year by all interior design organisations
of the world with the aim to provide
exposure to the profession and the
industry. This year’s celebration aims
to encourage professionals, national
organisations, design enthusiasts and the
public to explore creativity, imagination,
vision and passion in relation to the role
of interior design in art, culture society
and environment.
MIID created a one-day event
encompassing
several
activities
including MIID Students Membership
Drive, MIID REKA Session and MIID
Interiors Heritage Trail.
The MIID Students Membership Drive
aims to expand membership, encourage
student participation and recognition of
the MIID.

Events hosted all over the world are
linked by a common theme chosen each
year by the Interior Design fraternity to
reflect the values of the industry as a
whole. The theme for 2015 is “Design
for All” and MIID hopes to promote this
chosen theme through the celebration
of the World Interiors Day by giving the
Malaysian Interior Design community the
opportunity to reach out to organisations
in business, education, public services
and government. Aligned with this vision,
is the objective of creating awareness on
the potential of Interior Design to play a
vital role in the necessary transformation
of our societies into more cohesive,
innovative and sustainable ones.

MIID Interiors Heritage Initiative
As the national institute representing
the interior design profession in
Malaysia, it is vital for MIID to undertake
the responsibility of ensuring the
conservation of all legacies with regards
to the interiors of the built environment.
The MIID Interior Design Heritage
Initiative was created with the objective of
safeguarding buildings and constructions
deemed worthy of their interior design
features and value.

in “Bengkel Konservasi Bangunan
Warisan
Selangor.”
Organised
by
Perbadanan Adat Melayu Selangor
(PADAT), these seminar and workshop
provide a basic understanding of the
restoration.
The second activity under the MIID
Interiors Heritage Initiative is the Interiors
Heritage Trail, organized during the
celebration of the World Interiors Day
on 30 May 2015. These series of visits
highlighted the importance of heritage
conservation and covered many aspects,
such as sensitivity towards the past;
emotional ties towards the space/building
and its surroundings; ensuring the
conservation of our physical environment

Lighting in urban and building design

of basic lighting concepts which is
necessary for an advanced discussion

MIID REKA SESSIONS 10 : GBI Interior Tools
In going one step further towards
sustainable interior management in
Malaysia, Green Building Index (GBI) with
Malaysian Green Building Confederation
and Malaysian Institute of Interior
Designs have collaborated together to
launch the GBI Interiors Tool.
The GBI initiative is in line with the
government strong advocacy in promoting
green buildings and sustainable built
environment within the state.
GBI Interior tool is a rating system that
was created to address the issues
concerning sustainable interiors in the
appropriate context. It is being designed
to complement the other GBI tools and
was developed locally in a holistic way
with the participation of the local industry.
This lecture studied the most important
aspects of the GBI Interiors Tools and
provided practical tips on scoring and
maintaining the rating.

MIID Annual Ball
As it is carried out each year, the MIID
Annual Ball is also an occasion to confer
out awards for the winners of the REKA
Awards Design Excellence and also the
Homedec Awards. This year the awards,
named the MIID Nippon Paint REKA
Awards Design Excellence were given
out to winners of the design competition
which ran from 19th September until
3rd October 2014. Over 100 entries were
received for various categories by MIID
members, showcasing the best of interior
spaces in Malaysia.
At this event, attendees of MIID
Annual Ball 2014 also witnessed the
of pilot projects under GBI Interiors. The
Green Building Index Interior Tools is a
collaboration of Green Building Index
(GBI) with Malaysian Green Building
Confederation (MGBC) and Malaysian
Institute of Interior Designers (MIID).
The MIID Annual Ball, held in the third
quarter of each year, is a fraternal
gathering to acknowledge the Interior
Design
professionals
and
their
industry partners. Held at Sime Darby
Convention Centre in October 2014, the
event was attended by supportive and
enthusiastic guests comprising MIID
members, architects, industry partners,
academicians and students.

NEW GENERATION PROGRAMME: 1000 MIID STUDENT
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
Building Membership Engagement: Studen [Graduate+Academic]
MIID New Generation Programmes
The MIID New Generation Programmes
provided opportunities for participating
students to network with other
students. By providing ‘sit-down’
seminars and ‘get-up’ workshop, the
objective is to provide these students
with simple yet powerful strategies
and skills that may be implemented
support and enhance their education.
That’s not all, Interior Design leaders in
the industry are also able to ‘give-back’
and share their experience with future
young designers in Malaysia through
their participation in these seminars
and workshops. The latest session was
held on the 5th November and 14th
November respectively with more than 40
participants, creating a highly informative
and inspiring talk for both sessions.
MIID New Generation Manufacturer
Visit
Another concentration of the MIID
New Generation Programmes was the
development of a scheme for industry
visits as part of stimulating design in
the programme. The objective was to
increase students understanding with
relevant experience and subsequently
providing impact to their educational
journey. The “Access” strand focused
on encouraging students to understand
‘how materials are selected, composed
and assembled’ making the visit a more
practical and engaging experience.

MIID Interior Design Student Student Saturday
The MIID Student Saturday event was
Organised by MIID and hosted by One
Academy School of Interior Design, the
8Belas.2 MIID Interior Design Student's
Saturday 2014" themed “Fantastic Futuristic -The future is now”. It was held
on 8th November 2014 at Expo Hall, Level
2, North Wing, Viva Mall, Kuala Lumpur.

Managing Director of Akzo Nobel Paints
(M) Sdn Bhd. Activities held during the
event consisted of full day competitions
and games to the theme of "Fantastic Futuristic". Other competitions included
photography, treasure hunt, lighting
design, floral, chair design, sketching and
performances. There were a total of 800
attendees comprising of competitors,
lecturers, judges and MIID Council
members.
Dulux Akzo Nobel was the Main Sponsor
for the MIID Interior Design Students
Saturday 2014. The host for the 19Belas.2
MIID Interior Design Students Saturday
2015 will be INTICAD.
Each year, MIID will plan and expedite new
idea s in m a k ing the c om petitions better.
Floral Arrangement was something new
last year with the end results proving to be
interesting and creatively different. MIID
managed to pull together 15 professional
Interior Designers who shared ideas with
some groups of students from 15 schools,
universities and colleges, for the Dulux
sponsored competition. This proved to
some of the mentors were award winners,
hence the overall experience described
by the students were "Fantastic". On the
other hand, IM4U’s Fantastic Puchong
competition was a give back to society
competition where students had to design
graphic panels for the outside of IM4U
Radio Studio in Puchong in order to win
cash prizes for gifts sponsored by IM4U.

PN SITI MAJIDAH A. MAJID
Majidah A. Majid graduated in 1968 with
from the Brixton School of Building (now
known as the South Bank University),
United Kingdom. Upon graduation, she
joined the Interior Design Department
of BEP Arkitek as an Interior Designer in
1968 and in 1974, she became the Head
of the Interior Design Team. In 1979,
she started her own practice of Majidah
Design Sdn Bhd as the Principal Designer
and Managing Director.
Puan Majidah was elected the pro-tem
President of the Malaysian Society of
Interior Design (MSID) in 1989. Following
the registration of the MSID in 1990, she
served in that capacity of President for
two consecutive terms until 1995. In
1999, she was made a Fellow of the MSID
and served as a Council Member until
the Merger of MSID and IPDM in 2006.
During the Merger, she was also elected
as a Board member of the MSID - IPDM
in 2006. During the Merger, she was also
elected as a Board member of the MSID
- IPDM Merger Pro-Tem Committee until
2010.
MSID Interior Designers Award (IDA
In 2003, she was elected as a Board
Member of the International Federation
of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) and
has served for two terms on the IFI Board.
Subsequently, in 2008, she was appointed
as a Board Member of Lembaga Akitek
Malaysia (Board of Architects) where she
still serves as a Board Member.
She was also actively involved in the
Organising Committees of the successful
Asia Paciifc Space Designer Association
(APSDA)

Assembly
and
Conference 2006 in Kuala Lumpur. She is
in the Committee of the Interiors Malaysia
Exhibition and Conference since 2007.
She has served in the Panel of Judges for
the MIECO Designer’s Choice Award and
