VJorld Service belongs to the A.A, Groups. 2. The A.A. Groups have Delegated complete Administrative and Operational Authority 3. 4. 5. The "Right of Decision" makes Effective Leadership Possible. "Participation" is the Key to Harmony. The right of "Appeal and Petition" protect Minorities and Insures that they be 6. 7. The Conference acknowleges the primary responsibility of the Trustees. How the Legal Rights of the Trustees are related to the Traditional right of the 8. The Trustees function as the Direct Manager of Over-all finance to their Conference and its Service Arms. heard. Conference. an^ policy: Also as the custodians but not as the Immediate managers of the active service Corporation. 9. Good personal leadership at All Conference levels is a Primary necessity,. In the area of World Service, the General Service Board and its leaders must necessarily replace the Founder of A.A. This is the most critical structural problem that we still face, 10. Service authority should equal service responsibility. Executive authority should always be single. "Double Headed Management" should be carefully avoided, 11. A description of the Primary Committees and Service Corporations of the General Service Board: The personal status of Corporate Directior, Executives and Staff members, 12. The Spiritual Foundation for the A.A.'s World Services—"Article 12" of the Conference Charter, *************** A Concepts Luncheon, sponsored by the Area Assembly, will be held Sunday, April 6, in the Golden Avenue School, Lemon Grove. The Luncheon is scheduled for 12:30 Noon. Clyde D,, first Southern California Convention Chairman, past delegate from Southern California Area ano a long time student of the concepts, will be the speaker. He is the author of the short form of the Concepts appearing in this issue. Luncheon will be of the pot-luck variety with the Area Assembly providing barbecue beef, coffee, dessert and other menu items. Members of the Area Assembly will provide a wide variety of pot-luck dishes. There will be no charge, A kitty will be available for those wanting to help defray expences. But no donation is niecessary for those waating to hear about the Concepts and not with funds at present. Those wondering why A.A. seems to rock along without too much conflict will learn it is not by happenstance, that it is the result of intelligent planning and the Concepts are one of the major contributing factors. One of our past Mew York Trustees describes our late Co-founder, Pill Wilson, as "an organizational genius". The Concepts are a product of his genius. After understanding the Concepts one can be still more grateful that men of such organizational genius and stature came along at the right time to devise a way of life that saved ours. ******************************** A.A. is not affiliated with any related facility or outside cooperate with them and they cooperate with us. A law requiring the monthly audit of a non-profit organization. The law requires a report and audit annually to protect our non-profit statis. Harriet read part of the Plans of Procedure regarding any expenditure that might involve reserve funds. Joe W., chairman of the Business Committee also wanted to help set the records straight. He did not make any such statement as to a law regarding a non-profit Or ganization. Secondly the outside auditing service was voted on several years ago and this committee is only following proceedures. Dorothy H. stated the authority of Robert Rules of Order on Votes that are Null and Void. The vote of this cootvifi last month, granting a 157o raise to the Office Manager, which might involve the use of our reserve funds, is in conflict with our Bylaws and therefore should be declared null and void. Dorothy made a motion that the vote be declared null and void and the raise be suspended until such time as the approval of the groups is obtained. Seconded by Harriet M. Vote was then taken again by council. Raise stands. NEW BUSINESS: A female member was elected to the Program Committee. Nancy L from No. Co Harriet N. said "The cost of the monthly bookkeeping service has arisen as compared to the once a year audit by an outside firm which is required by our bylaw, and which was the practice in the past years." Harriet M. made a motion that the Business CommTttee obtain three estimates from outside firms for the Annual Audit only, and provide this information at the next Coordinating Council meeting. Dorothj? H. seconded the motion. Cal asked Harriet if she would amend her motion to say thit "The Business Committee would research an alternate means of obtaining economical means of bookkeeping service and report back to this council. Harriet agreed to accept Cal's amendment. Joe Wc, Business Committee chairman would like what ever the council would like the committee to do, put it in writing. Pete M. objected to the use of the word auditing used, as it is a monthly account ing service. The audit is something different. He works for this type of firm and they charge a large fee for an annual Audit as it takes two to three weeks to-complete. Paul C. reported on the Concept Luncheon. Time,Date ft Place. Probably no A.A. tradition had the labor pains this one did. In early times we were all broke. When you add to tis the habitual supposition that people ought to give money to alcoholics trying to stay sober, it can be understood why we thought we deserved a pile of folding money. What great things A.A. would be able to do with iti yot/jPd/, hai^e-fcc Otfcin But oddly enough, people who had money thought otherwise. They figured that -sober- it was high time we now paid our own way So our fellowship stayed poor because it had to. h//u A.A. went throught a growing period. Our re actions to money prove this. As A.A. emerged from its in-fancy into adolescence, we swung from the idea we needed vast sums of money to the notion th A.A. shouldn't have any. Despite these misgivings, we had to re cognize the fact that A.A. had to function. Meeting places cost something. To save whole areas from turmoil, small offices had to be "Cartoon reproduced with the permission of A.A. World Services, Inc.," set up, telephones installed, and a few full time secretaries hired. Over many protest, these thing were accomplished. We saw that if they weren't, the man coming in the door couldn't get a break. A.A. presents a strange and refreshing spectacle. It points out that the irre sponsible had become responsible, and that by making financial independence part of its tradition, A.A. had revived an ideal that its era had almost forgotten. Even though there are no dues or fees for A.A. membership, we come to realize that the practical side of life involves a certain fiscal responsibility. Usually those who are able, soon start putting something in the "hat" for the necessitijs of A.A. life for example coffee, rent, utilities etc. ******************** ** * YOUR CENTRAL OFFICE WAR MEMORIAL BUILDING WEDNESDAYS — BALBOA PARK 8:00 P.M. TODAY, MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL AA MEMBERS UNDERSTAND THE PRINCIPLES EXPRESSED IN OUR TWELVE TRADITIONS. THE INCREASING PUBLIC CONCERN OVER ALCOHOLISM COMBINED WITH THE RECOGNIZED SUCCESS OF THE AA RECOVERY PROGRAM, OFFERS MEMBERS WIDER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE. AT THE SAME TIME, WE FACE MORE TEMPTATIONS THAT CAN LEAD TO AA DISUNITY AND DISASTER. AA"S CO FOUNDER, BILL W., PUT IT LIKE THIS: "WE ALCOHOLICS ARE THE BIGGEST RATIONALIZERS IN THE WORLD. FORTIFIED WITH THE EXCUSE THAT WE ARE DOING GREAT THINGS FOR AA, WE CAN RESUME OUR OLD AND DISASTROUS PURSUIT OF PERSONAL POWER, PRESTIGE, PUBLIC HONORS AND MONEY. "AT THE SAME TIME, BILL FREQUENTLY POINTED OUT THAT AAs COULD PROPERLY USE THEIR INSIGHT AND EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE OF AA IN THE FIELD OF ALCOHOLISM. MANY GOOD AA MEMBERS DO JUST THAT. THEY "WEAR TWO HATS", BUT CAREFULLY AVOIKD CAPITALIZING ON MISCONCEPTIONS OF AA TO GAIN PERSONAL PROFITOR POSITION. THEY ARE ABLE TO WALK THIS DIFFICULT ROAD BECAUSE THEY ARE AS FAMILIAR WITH AA TRADITIONS AS THEY ARE WITH THE PROCEDURES AND GOALS OF THE AGENCY THAT EMPLOYS THEM. OTHER, HOWEVER, VIOLATE AA TRADITIONS THROUGH IGNORANCE, INDIFFERENCE OR AMBITION. INNOCENT OR NOT, SUCHVIOLATIONS OF PRINCIPLES WEAKEN PUBLIC CONFIDENCE IN AA AND CREATE DISUNITY IN OUR FELLOWSHIP. DURING TRADITIONS MONTH WE MUST REMIND OURSELVES THAT THE TRADITIONS APPLY TO EACH ONE OF US AS TO OUR PERSONAL GROWTH AND TO OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS SOBER MEMBERS OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS. (Via the Grapevine) TRADITION ELEVEN "OUR PUBLIC RELATION POLICY IS BASED ON ATTRACTION RATHER THAN PROMOTION; WE NEED ALWAY MAINTAIN PERSONAL ANONYMITY AT THE LEVEL OF PRESS, RADIO, AND FILMS." k ******************************************* I AM RESPONSIBLE ARE YOU? Although we had done a lot of drinking, manfy of us never felt drunk, and were sure we almost never appeared or sounded drunk We knew lots of people who drank more than we did We were not like that. HOWEVER, after we learned some of the facts about the illness called alcoholism, our opinions shifted Not drinking at all...becomes the basis of recovery from alcoholism....Living sober turns out to be not at all grim, boring and uncomfortable, but rather something we begin to enjoy and find much more exciting than our drinking days. We'll show you how. BILL W. "The human drama that unfolds in these pages is memorable for two reasons - one public and one private. It is the story of a man whose discovery or vision, has changed the lives of a million people throughout the world (Aldous Hunxley called him "the greatest social architect of ouf time.")
