WELCOME TO JAFAX 20!
4
The big two-oh! In a lot of ways, it’s also two-POINT-oh; our 20th event brings some big and
exciting changes for JAFAX! After 17 wonderful years at Grand Valley State University, JAFAX
finally outgrew the Allendale campus and has moved to a new venue; the majestic DeVos Place
and Amway Grand Plaza hotel. This has enabled us to expand the event to three days, run 24-hour programming, bring in new guests, and host fantastic new events.
If you’re reading this, then you probably already know; this program has all kinds of useful information in it!
Read it! Rules to pay attention to are below, and on the following pages you’ll find maps, the schedule, and
descriptions of all the great stuff happening at JAFAX this year.
We have a great event for you this year! We’ve got a whole new venue this year, so pay attention to those
maps! Note that the tabletop gaming room and the anime screening rooms (which will also serve as overnight panel rooms) are in the Amway Grand, on the 2nd floor (Concourse level). The Maid Cafe is returning
this year, and will also be in the Amway Grand, downstairs in the Atrium Level. The rest of the programming, along with the exhibition hall, will be in the riverfront wing of the DeVos Place. Questions and feedback are welcome on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/JAFAX), or on our forums (www.jafax.org/
forum).
Enjoy yourself, be safe, and see you again next year!
ABOUT JAFAX
JAFAX first launched in 1996 at Kendall College in Grand Rapids and for that first year was little more than
a few screening rooms that gathered about 150 people for single day. At the time, it was one of about ten
anime conventions in the nation, but, for the first time, West Michigan got the opportunity to meet and connect with the larger anime and Japanese culture fan community. From these humble beginnings, JAFAX
soon outgrew Kendall and moved to Grand Valley State University for JAFAX 3 in 1998. The event slowly
grew, finally exceeding 5,000 attendees for JAFAX 19, and after 17 excellent years at GVSU we once again
had to seek a new venue, moving to DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids.
Through the years JAFAX has grown to include industry guests, fan panels, contests, game shows, photoshoots, vendors, artists, and more! We are happy to have you join us in our next
chapter as we continue to grow and expand our show into a new three-day
and overnight format, with new guests and programming we have not been
able to bring to our attendees before.
Through all the changes, the mission of JAFAX has remained the same:
To celebrate Japanese art and visual culture, in an effort to enrich, enlighten, and educate among an atmosphere of entertainment; and to be
as accessible as possible to all ages and backgrounds. JAFAX is made
for fans, by fans, and our close-knit community of attendees is a great
place to meet new friends and engage with fellow otaku. At the same
time, JAFAX’s educational roots make it a fantastic place to discover
anime for the very first time.

real at one point (eg: the firing mechanism was removed).
INCLUSION POLICY
Our convention is proud to partner with the Federal Government and the State of Michigan in
supporting breastfeeding mothers. Mothers are encouraged to nourish their breastfeeding
children wherever works best for their family. We do provide an area (that is not a restroom) for
mothers who desire privacy.
6
Below we have linked a copy of the Michigan breastfeeding antidiscrimination act for anyone who would like to review it.

We will make the best effort to get everyone going where they want to go and doing what they want to do. Our venue is
fully accessible, and we are prepared to offer further accommodation where needed.

AMY HOWARD-WILSON
& DAVID G. WILSON
Born in Detroit on May 28, 1955, proud graduate of The American
Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City - Class of ‘75. In 1979, I
was working in the front office of the Weist-Barron School,
when I heard about auditions for the English dub for a new Japnese
animated series, which would eventually come to be known as Star
Blazers. I had the honor of being cast to dub the voice of Nova (Mori
Yuki) for Season 1 -The Quest For Iscandar and Season 2 - The
Comet Empire.
Years later, I met a long time fan, Jeff Thompson, who very kindly
asked me to dub the voice of Miranda in The Rules of Being 16 episode of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA for RightStuf, Int’l.
In 1998, I met the man who would become my husband, David G. Wilson, III - at a con, of course! Born and raised in
Georgia, a devotee of anime since before it was known as anime, and known as Dave the Third to his friends! With a
passion for Japanese culture and history, Dave is especially keen on “old school” anime. He delights in sharing stories
and memories of the special days gone by, when changing the channel meant getting up and walking across the room!
We were married on October 14, 2000 and now share a beautiful home in Virginia with 5 fabulous felines.
Since 2002, I’ve been recording and producing audio books in my home studio and I’ve formed a family friendly, full service audio production company called Studio V.O.I.C.E., and coined a new title CVO (Chief Vocal Officer!).
ADAM WITHERS & COMFORT LOVE
Comfort Love & Adam Withers are the four-time Harvey
Award nominated husband-and-wife Action Faction
responsible for the critically acclaimed series The
14
Uniques, Uniques Tales, and Rainbow in the Dark. They
are a 100% symbiotic duo sharing the writing, pencilling,
and coloring duties equally. Comfort and Adam are currently
finishing up work on a massive project for Random House before they
go back to The Uniques and start a webcomic called, The Kitty Game.
Before becoming full time self-published comic creators in 2008 they worked in the world of RPG artwork for companies
such as Palladium and Green Ronin. Comfort and Adam have also done work for Image’s Mice Templar, and IDW’s The
Dreamer. The duo live in Flint, MI with their two cats, Obi-Wan and Annie-kin and can frequently be seen walking up and
down the road talking about stories.
JAMES DAWSEY
James Dawsey has spent his entire life in fantasy worlds. He has
been a roleplaying game enthusiast since the mid-1970’s, as well as
a fan of comics, movies, and animation that takes him to fantastic
worlds where anything is possible. Now he publishes roleplaying games and supplements, as well as writing and (sometimes)
illustrating them. He took over Vigilance Press from Chuck Rice in
2011 and publishes over a hundred game supplements under that
imprint. Among other projects, Vigilance Press publishes the Tianxia
line of supplements for the Fate Core System Roleplaying game, as
well as the Rogues, Rivals & Renegades line for Mutants and
Masterminds.
James has also written for Green Ronin Publishing, contributing to their DC Adventures line and their Mutants and Masterminds Third Edition line. When he is able to fit it into his schedule, he also runs the Vigilance Press Podcast.
DAN HOUSER
Dan Houser is a professional illustrator who’s worked on several
award nominated table-top RPGs, children’s books, and his own
webcomic, Dipswitch. He’s the line artist for ICONS, the Superpowered Roleplaying Game, by Steve Kenson. Dan has been coming to
JAFAX for four years - he designed last year’s t-shirt, and he absolutely loves the JAFAX crew, the volunteers, and all the wonderful
guests who swing by his table. He will be doing commissions during
JAFAX weekend, and ICONS: The Assembled Edition will be on sale
as well at his table.
Dan and his wife Stephanie live in Wisconsin, with their two weird cats and a dumb dog named Bear.
In the year 20XX, two tiny animals found a pair of magical dice
and transformed into gross humans who rap. These two, Cliff
B and DJ Stuck Down A Mineshaft, rock the nerdcore hip-hop
subgenre with their rhymes about video games, tabletop roleplaying, Avogadro’s number, conventioneering, Boba Fett, the
future, the past, bleeps, bloops, etc.
