Welcome!
to Grayson County!
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Grayson County is one of Virginia’s most unique
experiences. The people of this extraordinary community eagerly await to share the treasures of our
majestic mountain tops, numerous trails, abundant wildlife, pristine forests, breathtaking vistas, the
beautiful New River and all its tributaries.
From the highest points in Virginia (Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountains) to the serenity of the
second oldest river in the world (New River), the 460 square miles of Grayson County is an outdoor
enthusiast dream come true. The 30 miles of the New River that meanders along our countryside
is laden with a variety of indigenous wildlife. Take a rare photo of one of our bald eagles or try your
luck at reeling in a trophy catch as you float down the river with family and friends.
Grayson County is also blessed with a rich history and distinct culture and this is best
experienced through the enjoyment of our genuine Bluegrass and mountain music. The Towns of
Fries, Independence and Troutdale all possess a unique flavor and host their own special events,
festivals and celebrations… And you are invited.
I enthusiastically encourage you to come and visit Grayson County and
experience for yourself one of Virginia’s best kept secrets.
Warm wishes,
Jonathan D. Sweet

The New River
Riverside Outfitters, 12 Scenic Road, Fries, VA 24330, www.riversideoutfitters.com, 276-238-0878
The New River, one of America’s Heritage Rivers, and the second oldest river in the world flows
more miles through Grayson County than any other county in Virginia. It also is one of the few rivers that
flow north.
The New River offers many opportunities for the outdoor adventure including Fishing, Canoeing,
Birding, and Boating.
The New River and its tributaries offer the chance to catch citation fish of several different species
including Small Mouth Bass, Walleye, Muskellunge and Rainbow Trout to mention just a few.
There are two dams along the New in Grayson County, one at Mouth of Wilson, the other at Fries.
Boat landings are plentiful and convenient to fishermen, and local outfitters are ready to take
you on the fishing trip of a lifetime.
