How to Enroll DURING THE JANUARY ONLINE SCHOOL REQUEST PERIOD: As an Open Enrollment District, families have the opportunity each year to request a school of their choice for their children. The annual online process is held each January for the following school year. Beginning January 7, 2016, families can go online to request schools for their child(ren) for the 201617 school year. The online process closes promptly at midnight on the evening of January 21, 2016. ONLY families whose children are changing schools or who will be new to the district need to complete this process. Those who are not changing schools will stay in their current school. Go online if: • Your child is starting kindergarten in 2016-17. • Your child is moving to a new school level, such as middle school or high school. • You would like to move your child to a different school next year. Please visit www.natronaschools.org between January 7 and 21, 2016. You can complete the online selection process only one time during this window. We value diversity and believe that every child can learn and that all people have a fundamental right to be valued, accepted, and safe. We believe that: • Appropriate educational services within a full continuum of placement options in the school and community allow for responsible inclusion based on individual student needs; • Educators and parents have the responsibility to challenge all students by setting high expectations; • Early intervention, individualized services, and parent collaboration support positive student outcomes; • Students are supported in the least restrictive environment as determined by their IEP team; • Access to general education opportunities is the right of every student based on student need; • Communication and planning supports student transitions. Title I is a federal designation that grants additional support funding for schools with high percentages of students who qualify for free and reduced lunches. The purpose is to insure that all students meet high standards of academic achievement. NCSD’s Title I schools include Bar Nunn, Cottonwood, Evansville, Grant, Lincoln, Midwest, Mills, Mountain View, Pineview, University Park and Willard elementary schools, as well as Frontier Middle School. Every school in Natrona County provides special education supports and related services. Parent Resource Center (307) 253-4627 The vision of the Parent Resource Center is to strengthen the relationship among families, schools, and communities. The Parent Resource Center offers education, advocacy, prevention services, and interventions for families in partnership with other community agencies to support students’ academic and emotional well-being. 3 English as a Second Language (ESL) NCSD offers English-as-a-SecondLanguage (ESL) programs to support students of limited English proficiency in the following buildings: Elementary: Evansville, Lincoln and Fort Caspar Academy Middle: Centennial Middle School, Dean Morgan Middle School High School: Natrona County, Kelly Walsh and Midwest High Schools When students enroll in NCSD, parents complete a home language survey. Students whose home language is not English are screened for English proficiency. Students who score below proficient on the screener are encouraged to enroll in a school with an ESL program. In an ESL program, students attend regular classes for much of the day in addition to meeting individually, or in small groups, with an EL instructor who focuses on language development. Families of English Learners are encouraged to enroll students in schools with an ESL program. Interpreter services are also available for families. Please call 253-3151 for more information. www.NatronaSchools.org Elementary Core curriculum Each of our schools features a slightly different instructional model to meet the needs of specific learning communities. All students are taught state standards in all nine content areas regardless of how the information is delivered. All students have access to art, music and P.E. These classes are taught by specialists who travel from school to school. All students also study science with a hands-on, inquiry-based model. Students learn social studies according to state standards. Standards for Math The Wyoming State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) in 2011. These standards outline specific expectations so that students can build upon understanding of concepts, math language, and application from one grade to the next with the goal of being prepared for real-life applications. Utilization of technology is expected and encouraged. Each grade level includes focus areas and conceptual categories in order to create a depth of knowledge in mathematical content. The Natrona County School District adopted McGraw-Hill resources to support teachers in delivering quality instruction for newly adopted standards. McGraw-Hill “My Math” is a resource for Kindergarten to 5th grade students. This resource was developed to fall in line with the scope and concepts as defined in the CCSSM. Specific lessons within “My Math” are designed to meet key benchmarks. Elementary school students will be engaged in rigorous learning activities as they build conceptual understanding through the use of manipulatives and modeling, develop procedural skill and fluency, and apply their knowledge to real-world problems. McGraw-Hill “Glencoe Math” is the adopted resource for both middle level and high school courses. These programs emphasize vocabulary, problem solving, and real-world applications while addressing the ‘big concepts’ included in the common core standards. Standards for Reading & Writing The 2011 Wyoming Performance Standards for English/Language Arts (also known as the Common Core State Standards for English/Language Arts) require that reading, writing, speaking, listening and language instruction is shared by all teachers within a school. This interdisciplinary approach to literacy helps students be proficient communicators in college and the workforce by reading and writing more complex text as they progress through each grade level. NCSD uses a variety of learning resources, selected locally, to support student learning of the standards. Preschool Preschool, or pre-kindergarten (pre-K), is not a requirement. Preschool programs in the district are available at Title I schools and are funded through federal grants. Many of the programs have need or income eligibility requirements. All public preschools require students to be at least 3 years old by Sept. 15, 2015, and to be potty-trained for admission. Some also require developmental screenings. Applications for public preschools are available and accepted in the spring from any of the Title I schools. Class-size reduction NCSD values and strives for small class sizes in early elementary grades. The district is committed to keeping kindergarten through third-grade classes at 18-students per teacher. The district also establishes “cohorts,” or groups of students who stay together throughout their early elementary school years. Children remain with the same group of classmates from kindergarten through third grade, as much as possible. Children in cohorts benefit from closer relationships with each other. Teachers also are better able to focus their lessons, because all the students in their class have the same educational background. Secondary Standards All secondary schools provide students with the opportunity to learn the Wyoming Content and Performance Standards in nine content areas: math, language arts, science, social studies, physical education, health, fine and performing arts, career-technical education, and foreign language. The Wyoming Content and Performance Standards articulate a set of expectations for what students should know and be able to do, enabling them to be prepared for college and career success and to live a life that contributes to the global community. Hathaway Scholarships All NCSD high schools offer students access to the Hathaway Success Curriculum. Hathaway scholarships are designed to provide an incentive for Wyoming students to prepare for and pursue post-secondary education within the state of Wyoming. The program consists of four separate merit scholarships (honors, performance, opportunity, and provisional opportunity), each with specific eligibility. A need-based scholarship that supplements the merit awards is also available for eligible students. For more information, visit: http://edu.wyoming.gov/beyondthe-classroom/college-career/ scholarships/hathaway www.NatronaSchools.org Dual Enrollment High school juniors and seniors may take any course offered at Casper College, as long as the student meets the course prerequisites. These courses will count for college credit and high school credit at the same time! In some cases, sophomores and freshmen are eligible as well. Students can take courses any time of the day or online. Concurrent Enrollment Concurrent Enrollment consists of courses that are scheduled and taught in the high school during the day. These courses are certified to be equivalent to the college level course, and therefore, students can sign up for Casper College credit while taking these courses at their home high school. Pathways Innovation Center Pathways Innovation Center is Natrona County School District’s approach to improve a student’s high school experience and competitiveness in whatever post-high school experience he/she chooses. The instruction in the academies is career-themed to include collegepreparatory curriculum. Academies may be comprised of small learning communities in which students and teachers from different disciplines work together. These students are linked through their common interests and the content is focused on those interests. Each academy helps students focus their learning in an area of interest. Students may enter an academy at any time during their high school years, and can change academies later if they choose. Students will access the Pathways Innovation Center campus during the 11th and 12th grade. Academies introduce students to what lies beyond the traditional education experience, and engages students in relevant and rigorous curriculum that better prepares them for both careers and college after graduation. The academies allow 4 Curriculum & Programs (cont.) students to regularly connect to the real world through opportunities such as community speakers, visits to industry workplaces, job shadowing, internships, senior projects, and industry certifications and/or licensures. All of these experiences are designed to increase the relevance of, and interest in, the content that makes up a student’s program of study. The focus of academy-based learning is that NCSD graduates will have the knowledge and skills to be competitive in the 21st century marketplace. Academy learning meets the descriptors of the graduate profile as defined by NCSD, and academy students will meet the Hathaway success curriculum. The academies are ACME (architecture, construction, manufacturing, engineering), BANR (business, agriculture, natural resources), CACD (creative arts, communication, design) and HSHS (health science, human services). Star Lane Center Program 1400 S. Fairdale, Casper (307) 253-3100 Grade Level: 9-11 Star Lane Center is a small, interdisciplinary high school program that allows students to construct their own learning in the Natrona County School District. Our students come from all district high schools and are of all academic abilities. Star Lane Center is a half-day program available to any 9th, 10th, or 11th grader in Natrona County. Students earn credits in English, science, social studies, and an elective with emphasis on computer science in a problem-based learning environment. Students who are interested in attending must be enrolled in one of the district high schools, (Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Roosevelt, or Midwest High Schools). They take electives and math at their home high schools the other half of the day. 5 At Star Lane, teachers welcome students as partners in learning. There are no classrooms or textbooks. Instead, students work in small study groups of ten to 15 people. Guided small group discussions allow students to share and test knowledge. Community professionals and other experts collaborate with students to investigate local, national, and global issues and professions. Curriculum and standards are built into a series of month-long problems, focused on specific issues, scenarios, ideas, or concepts. Students work through each problem in their groups, guided by a teacher and supported by community experts. Through these problems, they also study the required high school content in each subject. Each problem ends with a project or presentation that is open to the public. Students are graded on an individual basis and evaluated on presentations and written documentation that provide evidence of their learning. Students are also assessed on collaboration skills and their contribution to the group effort. Star Lane students participate in activities and athletics through their home high schools. Transitions Learning Center Program 2000 Casper St., Casper (307) 253-4350 Grade Level: 10-12 Transitions Learning Center is an alternative educational program for high school students who have dropped out or who feel that they are in danger of dropping out. It is meant to be a temporary placement until the student is ready to return to his/her home school. Students who are interested in attending must be enrolled in one of the district high schools, (Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Roosevelt, or Midwest High Schools). They must attend an intake interview and a mandatory orientation, called the Success Seminar. Once accepted www.NatronaSchools.org into the program, the staff will work with the student’s home school to develop an educational plan that fits his/her individual needs. The Transitions Program is designed to help students in the area of credit recovery and dropout re-engagement. Students participate in intensive and condensed classes that meet for 3.5 hours per day for 19 days. This is equivalent to one session; Transitions offers eight sessions per year. At the end of each session, a student may earn .5 credits, or one full credit if classes are taken both morning and afternoon. Credits are available in all core subjects, with a student to teacher ratio of 15:1. Instruction is individualized, differentiated, and based upon best practice strategies. Because credit can be earned in a relatively short amount of time, students must attend every day of the session. Students are dropped from the course if they miss more than 3.5 hours during a 19-day session. Morning core classes are offered from 8 - 11:30 a.m. and afternoon core classes run from 12 – 3:30 p.m. The Learning Lab, featuring the use of the Odyssey Ware software program, is open daily with extended hours from 3:30 – 6 p.m., on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. In the Lab, students work independently in core classes with the support of on-site teachers. The Transitions Program offers off-site and alternative elective programs. For every 60 hours attended, students may earn .5 credits in the following areas: ProStart (culinary arts), Core Construction (building trades), and career work experience. REACH High Program 500 S. Wolcott, Suite 102, Casper (307) 258-7439 Grade Level: 9-12 REACH High is a recovery high school program designed for recovering chemically dependent students in grades nine through 12. Students who are interested in attending must be enrolled in one of the district high schools, (Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Roosevelt, or Midwest High Schools). This program provides a small, supportive educational and therapeutic environment for students who meet the enrollment criteria and who have completed the enrollment process. Students are expected to adhere to a continuing recovery plan, attend a minimum of two 12-step meetings weekly out of class, work with an approved sponsor while enrolled, and submit to random, on-demand drug testing. Students attending REACH High receive direct instruction in social studies, math, science and English and Physical Education. Additional elective courses may be available to students who are successful in these areas during their first semester at REACH High. Continued enrollment at REACH High will depend on the student’s intent to remain sober, the student’s academic growth, and student’s compliance to the program’s enrollment contract. Natrona Virtual Learning Program (307) 253-3186 Grade Level: K-12 NCSD offers opportunities for students to learn online. Students who are interested in attending must be enrolled in one of the district high schools, (Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Roosevelt, or Midwest High Schools).
