A Letter from the Board President ...
June 2016 |
Dear University Club Members,
It is my pleasure to serve you as President of our Club. Exciting things have been happening at the Club and I hope to share
the good news with you.
Our Scholarship Luncheon and awards program were a huge success. We were able to add $15,450 to our Scholarship Fund.
Our 2016 winners represent the best of the best.
·
Samuel Austin from Allendale High School. Samuel plans on attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
·
Connor Young from Comstock Park High School. Connor plans on attending the University of Michigan.
·
Kayeleigh Eder from West Catholic High School. Kayeleigh plans on attending Grand Valley State University.
They will receive $1,000.00 each year for four years, thanks to your generosity.
2016 Scholarship Committee & Recipients
Dr. Thomas Haas, President, GVSU
Connor Young, Kayeleigh Eder, Samuel Austin
Our fellow member Tom Haas, President of Grand Valley State University, was our Keynote speaker and his inspirational and
informative rewards were well received by the eighty plus guests at the luncheon. Hats off to Committee Chair, Valerie
Feehan, and the Committee, with the help of Megan Ringnalda for the great job.
The University Club is happy to announce our new look. The 10th Floor has all new carpet, couches, chairs, and other miscellaneous furniture pieces and décor. The Press Club now has a new pub-like feel with high top tables, a couch and lounge chairs
perfect for cocktailing. Come check out the new look soon!
Times are changing downtown Grand Rapids and in our own demographics. The Board is committed to addressing these
changes. We just completed a retreat and thanks to Frank Dunten, John Byl and Kim Coleman, with the assistance of Tim Fallon of the Clarion Group, we had a successful meeting and produced a long range road map for the Club.
We appreciate your use and commitment to our Club and encourage you to help us grow the Club, attending our events, use
the dining room, athletic club and bring guests. If we can assist in any way, please let us know.
Special thanks goes out to our dedicated staff Laurie Kelbel, our General Manager, Katie Blaauw, our Assistant Manager &
Event Coordinator, Pam Sommer, our Office Manager, Leslie Wysocki, our Event Coordinator, Taylor Babcock, our Marketing
Director, Stephanie Pratt, our Dining Room Manager, Jason Goodell, our Athletic Club Director, Mike Schoenborn, our Executive Chef, Matt Doorlag, our Sous Chef, and their hardworking and loyal staff.
One note of bad news. Megan Ringnalda, our Marketing Director, is leaving us. She has been a big factor in the success of our
scholarship program and overall quality of our Club.
Have a great summer and enjoy our Club.
James S. Brady, President

WHAT SHOES SHOULD YOU BE WEARING AT THE GYM? BY JASON GOODELL
Ever wonder why someone is wearing a certain shoe when on the treadmill and then a different
shoe while weight lifting? Here is what you need to know:
Running Shoes
Running shoes are designed just for running or a very active walking activity. These shoes usually
have more cushion and support for forward momentum movements. Some have stiffeners and
extra support to control the foot as it lands, thus helping protect knees and joints from impact. Running shoes are
great for outside running, treadmills and even elliptical type machines. Running shoes are great for anything that
requires only forward movements over a long duration of time (30 minutes or more).
When looking at running shoes, it is best to be fitted by someone who is knowledgeable about running and running styles. These people are professionals and they care about your comfort and safety. They can explain the
differences in each model and can fit you properly for size. Bottom line you should trust the professionals and pay
a little extra for the best experience and safety.
Training or Cross-Training Shoes
Training and Cross-Training shoes can be very different than running shoes, but they can also be very similar.
Some training shoes have higher heel areas and stiffeners for heavy weight lifting while others have a flat bottom
and wide tread base for lateral movements. Picking a pair of shoes that matches the type of exercise is important
for your safety. If you get a shoe that is too high for lateral movements, the possibility of a twisted ankle is higher.
If you get a shoe without enough stiffeners for heavy weight lifting, the possibility of a stress fracture in your foot
is higher. All things considered, you should ask a professional which shoe would be right for your activity. Trainers and instructors at the gym are great resources for picking the proper footwear for your preferred activity.
Overall, you can find a shoe that fits most of your needs. The most important thing to consider when choosing
footwear for your exercises is safety. Along with wearing the proper footwear, you should always begin any strenuous exercise with a nice warm up and a few quick stretches. I also recommend a nice long stretch at the conclusion of any exercise session. Please stay safe and good luck in all your exercises and recreational activities. Have a
wonderful summer!
