Although thee automated d systems of metadata coollection are state-of-the e-art, neverthheless to gett the maximum beenefit, especcially for enthusiasts, stuudents, teach hers, or for multi-user m or institutional installations a degree of grooming, harmonising h or structurin ng will alwayys be neededd. ople we sugggest that an hour spent rreading this guide g can infform the appproach you will w take to To those peo suit your neeeds. Because many of the mo ost demandin ng collectionns we supporrt are of classical music aand because that genre iss most difficultt to navigate,, the examplles in this guide tend to be b in that ge nre. one of the m However Sooloos is also excellent when applied to advanced d Jazz, World d and New Agge collection ns; the concepts, to ools and tech hniques applyy equally. In this guidee we also try to illustrate the strengthhs and weakn nesses of the e various conntrol clients and particularly point out thiings to keep in mind if thhe goal is to navigate n the collection oon one of the e mobile controls. Page | 3 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Organisiing and Using U a So ooloos Co ollection The Meridiian Sooloos music man nagement and serverr system is highly rega arded for its intuitive an nd welcoming g user interface. Unlike other music servers, a Sooloos S system doees not slow down as more m contentt is added an nd, in fact, the larger the collection the t better it will be beccause we can n form moree links between th he content. On the other hand, no collection is i too small and the sysstem works beautifully with just a handful of discs. os Metadata The Sooloo service willl normally provide eno ough information to allow an n average co ollection to be immedia ately useful. However so ome specialised d or larger collections can benefit from groom ming. This page shows s two larger colleections. This documeent illustratees some of th he unique annd powerful Sooloos S conccepts and tecchniques wh hich are worth underrstanding beefore either importing or refining a co ollection. Cla assical and otther specialised music collections ccan need som me thought; users have ddifferent requirements. Page | 4 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Working g with Setts We can grou up albums into sets exacttly analogou s to a CD boxed-set. The screen n shows Page 1 of a Library after we have h grouped d two album m sets (Albinoni Twelve T Concertos;; one by Hogwood and the other by Holliger). H Album setts show a small icon in the top left cornerr of the key album. If we selecct the Hogwood by touching the set covver then we see the scrreen below. On the right there are two Tabs. ‘B By this Artist’ and ‘In this Set’. Normally itt will come up as show wn. To break th he set apart, press: X Rem move for one of the albums. a Another fun nction is: Make Key which allows you to pick which album m’s cover is shown at th he top level (normally [1 1 of n] but there may be b a reason to select an nother).1 Albums A in seets will be listed in alphab betical orderr of Album Tiitle or numerric order in a multi-disc set. 1 A system resstart is necesssary before ch hanges to albuum key are vissible. Page | 5 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide H Here is anoth her example oof a Set. By touching t the iicons on the right we can n qquickly view the Works aand Tracks on o each disc. SSets can be used u to ggroup boxed d sets, but aalso other tyypes of ccollections. H Here we show a ‘Set’ ggrouping thrree different vversions of th he Album BBeatles for Sale. S TThe set, whicch can be rreviewed on the right, ccontains the original UK rrecording an nd the Mono aand Stereo re-masters. Page | 6 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Organisiing throu ugh Namiing The Artist reenaming funcction can be used in two ways to chaange the appearance of tthe ‘sorted by artist’ view w 2 in the Album m Browser. • • 2 Changing, for exxample the artist name A Alfred Brendeel to Brendel or Brendel, A Alfred may make m the um view morre intuitive to o some userss. albu Alternatively wee can leave th he Artist Nam me alone bu ut change the eir Sort As poosition. Chan nging the sort for Brendel as shown be elow will cauuse albums by b this artist to t be at ‘bree..’ in the alphabet. Informativve Note: Renaming the Artist field willl not change e the Artist in n the Creditss section. Page | 7 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide The followin ng series of screens illustrate possiblee organising options for a classical coollection. w are On the left we looking at an n ungroomed collection in ‘Albums Sorted by Artistt’ view. There are seeven albums by Dinu Lipa atti, one of which was isssued in more than one o collection. Here H the albums appeear in the ‘Di..’ region of the alphabet. The sort ord der for this artist can bee changed to o ‘Lipatti, Dinu u’. This allows us to retain the displayed na ame ‘Dinu Lipatti’ but to t show him at ‘Li..’ in thee alphabet. This order also a determines the t Explore order (see la ater). Page | 8 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide SSome users fiind it more inntuitive to reefer to artistss bby their last name. n In the sscreen on thee left, we hhave chosen to display aand sort him as ‘Lipatti, D Dinu’. N Note that thee collection iss aalso one step p tidier in th that the seven discs have bbeen formed into one set, t, re reflecting thee owner’s ccollection, preference or pperspective. TTo explore an nd play ccontents from m this Set wee ccan use the Album A View. TTo play a Wo ork, just ttouch that arrea of the sscreen. TThe screen on n the left sshows how we w can view aat a glance: • Albums in the Set • Works on each e Disc • Other information ((e.g. Review,, Credits, TTags, Label, Date, D etc.) Page | 9 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide A And we can quickly review other Albums in tthe same Se et. ee another Below we se vview of the Artist A Information n. Page | 10 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Album D Detail The examplee above illusttrates the ussefulness of tthe Album Detail D page. On the rightt we have a complete c list of Albums bby the same Artist. In thiss case the Arrtist means the t ‘Album Artist’ who aappears at th he top of thiss screen. When settin ng up a Librarry it is worth h getting to kknow this feaature before deciding exaactly if/how to groom the metadatta. In the abo ove we can see s that Leonnard Bernsteein is the ‘Arttist’, in this c ase the colle ector obviously prrefers ‘Condu uctor’ (or in this t case posssibly also ‘C Composer’). Doing D so shoows us a full list of other Albums wheere Bernstein n is the condu uctor. Howeever some co ollectors mayy prefer to diistinguish between him conducting tthe New Yorkk Philharmon nic (as here) by editing the Album Arrtist to, e.g., ‘Bernstein / NYPO’. If we did this tthen there would w be morre granularitty in the By This T Artist section. A more gran nular approach may also combine Solloist / Condu uctor / Orche estra, e.g. Ucchida / Tate /ECO. On the other haand some might prefer to o organise thhe concerto Genre G hierarrchically as SSoloist, if nott Conductor,, else Orchesttra (so in thee earlier exam mple: ‘Mitsu ko Uchida’ only o in the Arrtist positionn). Editing Album Artist will have no imp pact on the m metadata in Credits wherre each persoon will be sep parately represented by role and vice-versa. Page | 11 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Finding C Content Explore The ‘Sort As’’ setting for Artists will also be refleccted when ussing the Explore functionn on screen or o in either Control:PC o or the iPad or iPhone app plication. Page | 13 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Search The touchscreen has a Search function which cann be used to identify Album Artists, A Albums or Trracks which contain the search stringg. The screen n below show ws the resultt of a search for “Coplandd”. While below w we can see the result of an Album-oonly search for f the shortt string “Appaal”. Focus allowss us to restrict the number of albumss shown on the t screen acccording to a number of criteria. A ‘Focus’ cou mple as a Datte range3, a ssingle Genre or a combin nation made up of these,, Genres, uld be as sim Composer n names, Credits, Labels, Ta ags and Mooods or even audio a Qualitty. Tapping thee X in the upp per right corrner closes th he window an nd cancels aany unsaved changes. c 4 The formattting of track names can be important i if t he content is to be controlled using a poortable contro ol or if it is exported to aanother mediaa player, e.g. an a iPod. For e xample, in the e above exam mple, the user might prefer each track name to be preceded by th he composer, Beethoven: SString ….. 5 Works are reepresented byy an algorithm m which identtifies common n text between n adjacent traacks. Very occasionally this may give unexpected or aw wkward resultts. One exampple of untidy behaviour b may y be if an albuum has severa al works by mposer and th he tracks are formatted wit h a leading co omposer name e, e.g. ‘Beethooven: work 1 detail: some the same com movements’, followed by: ‘Beethoven: work w 2 detail: some movem ments’. In this case the systtem may decid de that the ‘work’ is ‘Beeethoven’. To avoid this make sure that thhere is at leastt one Classicall Genre (e.g. CClassical/Classsical/Chamberr hat Beethoven n is listed in th he Credits. Music) and th In exceptionaal circumstancces we may want to manua lly force the ‘work’ break point. p Adding aan ‘@’ characcter to each track of the w work will forcee a break at th hat point (the @ is not displayed). Page | 36 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide A very usefu ul feature of Select and Edit mode is tthe ability to o modify Cred dits in multipple albums. The followin ng screens take us througgh a worked example to change the Composer C Crredit for ‘Sam muel Barber’’ to ‘Barber, SSamuel’. (Wee might wantt to do this s o that we fin nd him under ‘B’ in the b rowser on th he iPad). To T start we F ocus the enttire collection to show only th hose albums with w the Sam muel Barber Credit. C Notice N we fouund him by just typing ‘b bar’ and thenn selecting from the list. After A pressingg Select All the t Select and a Edit brow wser window w now looks liike this. Note N that althhough Focuss showed us there are 38 albums with h this Credit, the window oon the left only shows 30, 3 this is beccause some of the albums a are foormed into sets. s Note: Add/reemove is NOT T search & reeplace. Page | 38 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Forensic Focus Generally when a large or o specialised d collection iis imported into i Sooloos there will bee a percenta age of Albums for w which the meetadata is no ot complete.. The Forensiic Focus allow ws us to imm mediately ide entify albums with h/without certain data types. If the coollection is to o be optimised or groom med then thiss feature enables a syystematic wo orkflow. The screen aabove showss the Forensic Focus dialoogue (which is accessed by pressing tthe right-mo ost Focus Tab b marked *). W We can use this t to isolate e those albu ms in the library with or without mettadata typess, such as cover art, reelease date, genres, g credits, labels, taags, moods, review r and also a to identiify media wh hich the background checking pro ocesses feelss is suspiciouus (and may therefore ne eed re-imporrting). ple above wee can see tha at there are 247 albums with no cove er, genre or credit inform mation. With h In the examp this Focus w we can now Tag T the album ms in Select aand Edit Mo ode and startt working. Page | 39 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Some Fin ner Pointts of Focu us Focus is a veery powerful function and this sectionn delves dee eper to help you y get the m most out of it. As we described on n page 16 the Focus screen has eightt major sectio ons (tabs): Album A info, G Genres, Composers, Credits, Labeels, Tags, Mo oods and * (FForensics). Album In nfo The Album Info tab grou ups four diffe erent types oof informatio on: • • • • hich looks at play count – a dynamic counter base ed on use).8 Mosst Played (wh Datee-related: Last played, Ad dded and Reelease Date. Quaality. Ratings, Picks an nd Skips. Focus Log gic If we focus o on any singlee criterion then the operaation is fairlyy self-evident. For exampple, we can make m a singlee focus on albums: • • • • • • • • on’ or ‘Conte nt added in the t last 3 Mo onths’ (Album m Detail) reccorded in ‘Higgh Resolutio containing musiic of the Rom mantic Era (G Genre/Genre e) featturing an instrument, e.gg. ‘Viola’ (Ge nre/Instrumentation) containing a parrticular Form m, e.g. ‘Sonatta’ (Genre/Fo orm) with h works com mposed by Be eethoven (Coomposer) featturing a partticular artist , conductor, accompanisst, e.g. Bryn Terfel, T Clauddio Abbado, etc(Credits) e releeased by, e.gg. ECM (Label) with h a specific user u tag. Every criterion may also o be negated, so the abovve exampless could be ‘exxclude’ ratheer than include. Useful for isolatingg hard-to identify groups,, such as ‘rem mind me what I have had dn’t played i n a year’. Include/E Exclude Must/May M y have So, what happens when n we focus on n more than one criterion? The way it works deppends on wha at they are, m extremely tight focusess, e.g. ‘show me albums containing w works compo osed by but the systtem can form Dvorak, of fform string quartet, q that I haven’t plaayed for 3 months but ign nore the ECM M label’. We have tried to make the focus op peration intuuitive but there are some e subtleties w worth grasping. Focus uses two loggic operation ns in combin ning two or m more criteria: • • Logical OR: if wee combine tw wo criteria inn this was we e mean we want w to see aany containing A or B. w Focus on two compossers (such as Bach and Co opland) the nnumber in th he result willl For example if we be ggreater than focussing on n either indivvidually. OR logic expand ds the answeer. In simple terms we are looking for items i that may m include A or B. Logical AND: This logic is use ed to show ittems that must contain all a criteria. Soo if we Focus on Bach and d Cantata thee resulting nu umber will n ormally be smaller s than taking eithe r criterion in ndividually. AND D logic narro ows the answ wer. In simplee terms we are a looking fo or items thatt must includ de A and B. 8 You may find that the num mber in focuss is wrong. Forr example if yo ou ask for the e 100 most-plaayed albums the t number her if some alb bums are inclu uded in sets. could be high Page | 40 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide The Soolooss system usees OR logic be etween samee-type criterria but AND logic betweeen different types. t In this way pickingg a number of o artists or genres will exxpand the focus, selecting a composeer, genre and d instrumentt will narrow it. Genre The whole to opic of music genres kee eps musicoloogists very bu usy. In Sooloo os we have rrecently splitt the Genres focus into th hree separate sub-tabs and this was ddone to logiccally treat the three genrre classes separately and d to improve o one’s abilityy to narrow (ffocus in on) a selection. The Genres ttab has three sub tabs: • • • Genres: This Gen nre/Style sett allows us too roughly gro oup music into types, e.gg. jazz, counttry, classical, folk and so on. o Within each e top-leve el Genre the re are Subge enres and Styyles and Foc us allows you to select any leveel (all of a top p-level, all off a sub-genre e or just one style).9 o In the Cllassical Genrre we includee all music which w may be e popularly reeferred to ass ‘Classical’, however the Style lissts include eera and typess.10 Form m: Here we allow a you to specify mus ical forms.11 Instrrumentation n: This genre area allows us to flag orr focus on ensembles or iinstrument types. t For exam mple we migght just wantt to see oboee or guitar music m or music for quartetts. Focus uses A AND logic between these e three sectioons and OR logic within each e section . So adding more m Forms will expand a focus, wheereas lookingg for Forms w with specific instrumenta ation will narrrow the resu ult. In h as: ‘show m me all roman ntic chamberr music that iincludes bassoon’. Genres we ccan focus on queries such A list of the built-in Genrre/Sub-genre e/Style list iss given in the e appendix on page 62. 9 For examplee we could foccus on just Jazzz, or specify aall Cool Jazz or even more granularly g Weest Coast Jazz. Era includes Medieval, Baroque, B Rena aissance, Classsical. Romantiic, Modern, 20 0th-century, ettc. 11 Classical Fo orms include such s types as cantata, c conc erto, fugue, sonata, etc. 10 Page | 41 Sooloo os Collectiions: Adva anced Guiide Renamin ng Album m Artist 1.
