VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 1 LET THE GAMES BEGIN Michael Sholly CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER With all the uncertainty surrounding the beginning of the season it is with great anticipation and relief that I welcome you all to the commencement of the 2007 season. No doubt you are all eagerly awaiting the start and can’t wait to get things started. Everybody involved with community football in Victoria have worked hard to ensure the grounds and facilities are in good order for the season and everyone needs to be congratulated on their efforts. We begin this season with two new clubs, South Mornington in D4 and St Francis Xavier in Club XVIII Section 1. South Mornington combined with Powerhouse last season to field an Under 19’s team and this year they stand alone as a senior club and we look forward to them fulfilling their goals in the future. St Francis Xavier is a newly formed old boys’ team from a co-educational school in Beaconsfield. As is evident from these two new teams, the growth areas of football are in the outer metropolitan areas. The Under 19’s continue to grow with two additional teams making 5 equal sections of 10. The Club XVIII competition is flourishing with eight new teams this season. Not everyone is suited to the two or three nights of training and match day and therefore Club XVIII plays a great role in meeting the needs of our clubs. Mt Lilydale, premiers in Section 2, has rejoined the seniors and will compete again in D4. The scheduling of this year’s matches has been very complicated due to issues regarding ground availability mostly stemming from the drought. All clubs have had their training severely restricted and ground usage for their Saturday games will be affected. As a result some Under 19 matches will be played on a Saturday morning at 9.20am, prior to the reserves, and other games will be played on venues not often used in the VAFA. We thank the clubs and the twenty-two councils who oversee these clubs, for their cooperation. The VAFA does not prioritise the competition and will endeavour to treat each match with equal importance. There will be no favourites with regard to the scheduling of matches and each query will be handled uniformly. During the off season, illicit drugs use and sledging by AFL players has taken up much of the football time. The VAFA have a responsibility to ensure that the games are played in a safe environment and are being enjoyed by all. The VAFA’s motto is Fostering Family Football. Illicit drug use does not foster family football. The VAFA is working closely with Vic Health and is reviewing its policies on the matter and we will advise the clubs of our position more formally in the future. Sledging is something that the VAFA does not condone in any form. I believe that we are the only competition that has a send off rule for audible obscenity. This rule creates a mental discipline to the players and this discipline transfers to other areas. In the VAFA we have great respect for our umpires and in part this rule assists with the implementation of our policies. Representative Football will again be of great importance this year. We are disappointed the A – D4 match against the SFL has been cancelled due to the drought as this game has been very competitive over the years. However the Under 19’s will be having two matches, against AFL Queensland and the VCFL, the Under 23’s will play the SAAFL and our senior team mix it against the VCFL as they play for the Brian Moloney Cup. We trust that these fixtures will provide extra motivation for our leading players. There are thousands of stories that will unfold over this season and to assist us to spread the Amateur message, I am pleased to welcome Russell Gould as the Communications Manager of the VAFA. Russell is currently a journalist/editor of mX newspaper and is a former Amateur Footballer scribe and VAFA player. Please contact him at [email protected] if you have any stories of interest. Good luck to the five thousand players and two hundred and thirty umpires who will actively participate in this weekends matches. It is the start of a six month journey which will hopefully be a rewarding experience for you and all your clubs’ supporters. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER THE JOURNAL OF THE VICTORIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION April 28th, 2007 V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 Price: $2.00 Vol. 07 No. 01 1 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 2 A SECTION by Jonathan Horn A fortnight ago, I hunked my way down to my local ground, hoping to catch a bit of A Section action. Alas, all I encountered were a couple of old pervs and a bunch of kids throwing bricks at one another. Totally rattled, I switched on to 96.5 Inner FM but all they could give me was an hourlong Finnish folk festival. It then dawned on me – drought and cashed up suburban clubs are the scourge of amateur football but even they cannot detract from what looms as the most even A Section in living memory. 1. Old Xavs - Even, that is, with the exception of these guys. They’ve lost Ford, Mollard and Lethlean to retirement but get back Matt McCarthy (Geelong), Cam Purss (Werribee) and Nick Serafini (from overseas). They also pick up the very handy Nick Bye (North Ballarat) Nick Dimattina (Port Melbourne) and Dustin Lloyd (Rye). That, my friends, is good list management – Lock ‘em in, mortgage the house. Before anyone starts throwing wobblies, bear in mind that I rate the next nine teams fairly evenly and thus, it is pretty much a token gesture that I go…. 5. St Bernards Remember those St Bernards teams where there were half a dozen blokes who could kick ten on you and the rest of the side were complete nut-bags? Well the modern version is a bit more low key but they’ll certainly be a factor this year. If anything, they’re definitely due for a change of luck. Jumping ship are Brett Cook (Kyneton) Jacob Spinella (Old Essendon) Andrew Gill and Liam Wilkinson (Point Coin). 6. Old Brighton - Pre-game solariums, a howling, souldestroying Antarctic gale and an A Section record that is, quite honestly, an absolute rotter. Brighton have been dismissed as jokers but I reckon they may be OK – they lose Nick Perry (retirement) but have added some very handy recruits, including Mark Ainley (East Perth & North Melbourne) and Marcel Bruin (Springvale). A genuine wildcard. 2. Uni Blues - Plenty of people willing to write off the Blues over summer but the tide is turning. Contrary to internet skulduggery, Patterson remains. They’ve also got a bevy of young guys from the country, of which little is known. Not going very well am I? A shattering Preliminary loss will still linger in their minds but this will be a new look outfit and they loom as very much a mystery side. Luke North is overseas and Tom Wilcox has retired. 7. Collegians - They may have lost their coach but the Wesley club have done well to retain most of their premiership side, together with a few handy pick-ups in Craig Robbins (Maffra) and Daniel Strachen (Coburg). Apart from the fact that it takes half a day to find car park at the Trott and the glut of De Grade celebrities in the their lower ranks, it’s good to have the oldest Amateur club back in the mix. 3. De La Salle - I’m not totally sold on De La. Lots of cats around town reckon this is their year but the fact remains – a/ they can’t beat Xavs and b/ they can’t beat Uni. They regain Rob Bonnici from England and Viv Buckley from the VFL but lose Damien Rayson to Coburg, David Lowe to overseas travel and my soon-to-be flat-mate Luke Seager, who did his knee in a Bikram Yoga class. The jury is still out. 8. Old Scotch - The Cardinals lost me in about five minutes after witnessing their First Semi Final last year. They also lost their skipper (Berenger) to Old Camberwell and their best utility (Wigney) to Old Carey. But they’re always canny recruiters (Adam Houilhan joins) and they’ll have a whole heap of very good kids from a cracking 2006 APS side. Tempted to, but won’t write ‘em off. 4. Old Ivanhoe - Amateur football is a young person’s game these days – lots of quick, little blokes on their P Plates. As such, older, wiser heads and stronger bodies are a something of a novelty and Ivanhoe has it in bucketloads. Were going along very nicely until injury derailed their August so they’ll have a lot to prove. Luxon returns from Queensland, Hope is fresh and firing and they’re in this up to their ears. 9. Old Trinity - Trinity have lost Damien Buttler to the ‘burbs – that’ll hurt. They also lose Fraser Cameron, who dragged a host of players over to Fitzroy, ala Kim Hughes on the South African rebel tour (only joking scribe). Always hard to get a handle on Trinity – Ramsden and Cultrera have stayed loyal and Jack Healy and Scott Krakour return. Reserving judgement – the sort of team who can beat anyone on their day. 2 V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 3 10 - Old Haileybury - The Badlanders adjourned to Darren Seccull’s farm to celebrate their stellar Premiership win last year. The way things are shaping up, I reckon most of ‘em are still in the barnyard. Corrigan’s gone to play in the Geelong league, Jenke is sitting out because of work commitments, Martin, McIntyre and Brown are off to the VFL, Trollope and Steinfort have packed up and young gun Tom Chisholm is an indefinite out with a back strain. Seccull and Stewie Loewe are fronting up again but they’re pushing forty. Three years ago, I picked Nicholson’s St Bernards to finish in the drop zone and I reckon I’m lucky he didn’t burn down my house. This time around, I’m willing to take the risk – goodbye Premiership Cup, hello B Section. Not even you could pull this off Nicko. V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 7 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 8 B SECTION by Tom Brain Finally after months of uncertainty, the longest pre season imaginable we are away, we get a start and all our ambitions and hopes go on the line. I wish all participants well both players and officials in what promises to be yet another intriguing season of Amateur Football. SEASON AHEAD Old Essendon – Finished third last year so obviously will be looking to maintain and improve on that. The return of the Biggs Brothers plus the recruitment of U19 State Rep Jake Spinella adds to a strong list. Darren Handley in his 2nd year will know his charges better so a good season is again in the offing. Caulfield Grammarians – Next highest placed in 2006 and a great performance in the first semi. Have kept nearly the entire list intact and with the influx of some young blood are sure to trouble every one again. A pretty tough pre season though. Uni Blacks – Stiff in the end in their first year back to miss the finals. Will be smarter from that and be keen to consolidate and improve. The addition of Huw Lacey plus a few returns and a few new recruits certainly makes Michael Rizio’s side one to watch. Beaumaris – Very good year last year to consolidate. But again for some incredible reason the travel bug has hit the Sharks and a few of them have ventured off into the overseas skies. But a man would be a fool to write off a side coached by Russell Barnes. MHSOB – New coach Mark Murray took the youth policy last year and blooded some fine youngsters culminating in a top second half of the year. Aided by their excellent senior players has me thinking this side will further improve and must be watched. St Kevin’s – Traumatic season but did enough to hang on. The loss of Paul Greenham and Ryan Chard two of the main reasons of survival will really hurt. New Coach Michael Duggan knows his footy has had plenty of numbers on the track and is looking for much improvement from the SKOB unit who back at Righetti have a base in which to work. Marcellin – Haven’t been here for a while and won’t want to be here long. Murray Browne makes a 8 welcome return as Coach. The loss of Chunky and we believe Papaluca is not going to help his cause but the improvement the young ones gained in A last year will be of great benefit. To be watched closely. Old Melburnians – Have had a disastrous last couple of years almost losing their entire list. But I believe Russel Morris has generated tremendous enthusiasm around the place and they look forward to a promising season. But one wonders whether the loss of Lacey and James Beaumont can be offset by a few games from Simon Beaumont, the first 4 weeks will tell. St Bedes Mentone Tigers – Return very quickly after a one year sojourn in C grade a tremendous effort by all concerned. A tough act to follow winning 3 premierships in a season. But haven’t lost too many, have recruited a great player in Ben Phibbs, have some walk up starts from the U19’s, a great coach in Luke Beveridge who keeps them on the straight and narrow and the advantage of Brindisi Street. Expect them to go well. Ajax – Fantastic year probably should have won the Game of the Century but was not to be. Will miss the experience of Tim O’Shaunessy as the main man but that is to taking nothing from new gun Stewie Powell whose record at St Kevs is impeccable. Have picked up a giant to play CHF which just adds to a formidable list. Sure to impress. PREVIEW Always terribly hard to tip winners in Round 1 as anything could happen and more so in this staggered start so I will be very staid in my initial prognostications and will go with all the home sides. OEG will repeat their practise match win over MHSOB. OM’S at the Junction will just give “The Fly” a first up win. Marcellin in their first test will finish to the fore of Beauy. Blacks to get home at the Uni against a super competitive Jackers outfit, while the flag unfurling and a huge home crowd including me will see the Tigers over the line. This year’s C Section promises to be a tight affair, with all four new teams (Whitefriars and Mazenod from B Section, and Old Carey and Rupertswood from D1 Section) all promising to add a new dimension to the competition. In short, I am taking Old Camberwell as my early season favourites, with the acquisition of many top line players strengthening Paul O’Shaughnessy’s arsenal, despite the loss of Brent Christie. Other contenders must include Fitzroy Reds, with newcomers Scott Dann, Anthony Kenna and Matt Davies set for a big year; Ormond, who blooded plenty of youngsters while playing finals football in 2006; and newcomers Old Carey, who have acquired former Old Scotch trio Tom Wigney, Robert Josephs and James Ross, and ex-Old Trinity man Jon Mai, are a good dark horse for mine. Parkdale Vultures must also come into consideration, and it will be interesting to see what influence new key defender Rochford will have. Whitefriars, relegated from B Section, have not had an ideal preseason in terms of available personnel, and at this stage, pending any developments in that regard, I’ll be keeping them safe. But certainly the loss of Jordan and Grant Hill, plus Rob Petracca will hurt. Mazenod, especially if the likes of returnees Jerome Dunn, Michael Chamberlain and Sam Reed can stay injury free and play to their full talent, should finish somewhere in the middle. D1 runners-up Rupertswood, who have enjoyed a great run since joining the VAFA in 1999 are another in this category. A strong running, skilful side, they should match up against most teams and will be particularly difficult to beat at home. Time will tell if they can adjust to this level as well as they’ve done in the lower levels previously. That leaves Monash Blues, and North Old Boys/St. Patrick’s, and as I’ve heard nothing from anybody 14 about them, I’m going to put them in my bottom two. Petty, yes, but if I’m not hearing hype, I don’t take it as a good sign. NOBs Michael Barker is as talented as any forward in the division, but needs the midfield delivery for his side to benefit from his talents, whilst the signing of John Barker intrigues. The lack of a cohesive preseason program for many teams (and maybe some media 'black bans'?) makes these assessments somewhat difficult, so I wouldn't be surprised if, at least early on, expectations are turned on their head. But it's the 'sturm and drang' of this unpredictability that makes it exciting. Bring it on, I say! ROUND ONE PREVIEW The first game up for preview sees 2006 D1 Premiers Old Carey travel to Gillon Oval to take on North Old Boys/St. Patrick’s, who were eighth last year. The Panthers as mentioned earlier have three recruits from A Section clubs, as well as an assortment from other sections and local leagues and are quite balanced in all parts of the ground. NOBs have also been active on the recruiting front, but I'm not expecting big things right away. The Panthers will miss 'Dolly' Parton, but should still put out a good side with Steve Collins, Travis Bull, Pete Tiras, et al. I'm gonna go Old Carey on this one. Next up is Mazenod OC and Parkdale Vultures at Central Reserve. The Nodders have lost Dom Dunne to VFL club Sandringham, but the return of the aforementioned trio from injury should more than make up for that. However, apart from the midfield, there are a lack of names that jump out and demand attention. For the Vultures, Tony MacGeorge is still doing the business, and along with O'Meara and whichever Sullivans and Barrs are playing this year, but the loss of Stephens and Hecker tempers this somewhat. Tricky to call, but I'll take Mazenod today. V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 15 Rupertswood made their C Section bow at E.E. Gunn Reserve up against Ormond with both sides full of exciting youngsters. The home side can boast Bryce and Leigh Deledio, David Robbins and Robert Chisholm, along with the veteran leadership of Matt McConvill. For Rupo, Dave Collins, Tom West and Leigh Brennan will provide the drive and momentum. Rupo will definitely be competitive and take it right up to the Monders, but I think the home side may be too polished for the visitors today. Ormond to win. Monash Blues host Fitzroy Reds at Frearson Oval in a clash of the primary colours. Word on the street (and in the chatrooms) is that the Reds are primed for a big season while the Blues will have, well, the blues, and struggle, especially with no 'Spider' Smith. But Round One always produces a surprise or two, and Monash will be looking to catch the Reds short. Can't see it happening today, especially if Tim Davis and Jeremy Rawlins are on song. The 'Bolsheviks' to win. Finally, it’s Whitefriars versus Old Camberwell at Whitefriars College Oval. The Wells have recruited strongly, securing (deep breath) Tristan Berenger, Ryan Chard, Gabriel Deane-Johns, Rayden Tallis and Tom Bayford, amongst others. In contrast, the Friars have lost some key personnel, and may still be in a period of adjustment. With the continued firepower of David Loats in the goalsquare, and the aerialism of Ryan Chard, I'm gonna take Old Camberwell on this one. CONTACT Match reports, milestones, social events, and anything else can be sent to me via email at [email protected] and [email protected]. I am keen to hear from all clubs and establish a degree of parity as far as publicity goes. Please keep your match summaries to 50-100 words if possible (due to space restrictions), but I am certainly happy to take on board any other comments, be it about the match or other things. Remember, this is about your club, so make the most of it. As David Lee Roth said in "Hot For Teacher", 'gimme somethin' to write on!' Good luck to your team today, and have a great VAFA weekend! VAFA d gossip an FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME... • NEW YEAR – NEW CLUBS Welcome to the 2007 season and finally we are underway. FTLOTG would like to welcome our 2 new clubs to the Association, St Francis Xavier OC and South Mornington. St Francis Xavier OC is a brand new club based at Beaconsfield and will compete in Club XVIII (2) in their inaugural year. South Mornington joins us from the Southern Football League and will compete in D4. South Mornington was a partial member of the VAFA last season when they formed an U19 side with the assistance of Power House in U19 (South). Their U19 side has gone into recess for this season to ensure their Reserves side is viable but will return next season with strong numbers from their junior club. South Mornington will be coached in their inaugural year by local legend Sein Clearihan and St Francis Xavier will be lead by former Pakenham player and coach Justin Pearson. Good luck to these clubs and every success as they begin their VAFA journey. • Cystic Fibrosis Cup Cancelled Unfortunately, due to the delayed start to the season, one of the regular highlights of the VAFA’s representative schedule has been cancelled for this year. George Voyage’s A-D4 side which takes on the Southern League annually for the Cystic Fibrosis Cup has been a victim of the need to play regular season matches over the June long-weekend in both competitions. George, who is undefeated against the Southern League, has offered is services to assistant the other representative teams in whichever way he can. Given his record and the results from other games last year, he is sure to be a valuable asset. • Representative Matches Even with the cancellation of the Cystic Fibrosis Cup for 2007, the VAFA has a very busy representative schedule this season. The VAFA’s first representative match sees the U19 side take on Queensland U21 in their return match from last season. The match will be played at Sportscover Arena on Sunday June 10th commencing at 1pm. The U19 side will again be coached by Justin Pickering who will be hoping for much more favourable conditions than they encountered last year in Brisbane. The VAFA U19 side will also take on the VCFL U19 side on July 15th at either Ballarat or Shepparton. The VAFA U23 side meets old foe South Australia in the final match of the AAFC Tri-Series on July 14th in Adelaide. The VAFA must rely on South Australia beating Western Australia on June 2nd, then defeat South Australia handsomely to have any chance of retaining the championship. The side will be lead by former St Kilda and Melbourne Defender Jamie Shanahan, who will be assisted by former St Kilda team-mates Nathan Burke and Jason Daniels, as well as former Old Haileybury Coach 18 Mick Dwyer who has been appointed Chairman of Selectors. The Senior representative side meets the VCFL in their biannual clash for the Brian Molony Cup on July 15th at either Ballarat or Shepparton. Having lost the last two matches against the VCFL, the VAFA are very keen to ensure the ledger returns to square (currently 5-4 in favour of the country). A coach for the VAFA side is yet to be named, although several high profile candidates are being considered for the role. An announcement will be made shortly. Vale – John Wilson John Wilson, VAFA Life member and former representative coach, passed away on Friday April 20. John had been battling illness for some time. John was an outstanding contributor to the Caulfield Grammarians’ Football Club from the time he left Caulfield Grammar in 1945 until he retired as a player after the 1955 season. John coached the senior team from 1961 to 1971, winning the D Section flag in his first season culminating in the outstanding win in the A Section premiership in 1970. Both John and Liz continued to support the club throughout the years in an outstanding manner. In recent times, JA would even mark the ground for us on Fridays before taking up his seat on Saturdays to cheer on the Fields. His encouragement to all players and coaches, up to and including the 2006 season, was greatly appreciated and acknowledged by all. He would fiercely defend CGFC whenever it was necessary. John was also recognised for his outstanding achievements within the amateur football code by being awarded VAFA life membership in 2003. In addition to serving on the permits and registrations area and committee of VAFA football for many years John also coached a VAFA representative team in 1971. He had an association with amateur football extending over 62 years. One of the greats, John will be sorely missed but has left a lasting legacy of exceptional commitment to the VAFA and CGFC. Our thoughts are with Liz and the family at this sad time. • Certificate of Merit – Colin Green At the 2007 VAFA Season Launch, 6 recipients were presented with the VAFA Certificate of Merit award for exceptional service to their clubs. Each week we will profile these recipients and this week we congratulate Colin Green from MHSOB. V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 Colin played with MHSOB from 1960 through to 1966, topping the VAFA A-Section goal kicking in 1963 and the VAFA U19 goal kicking in 1961 and 1962. Colin coached the MHSOB U19 side from 1967 through to 1970 before making a comeback for one year in 1971. Colin continued to be a loyal supporter of MHSOB through the 70’s and 80’s, helping out wherever and whenever he could. Colin assumed the role of President in 1996, a position which he still currently holds along with the prestigious role of Canteen Manager (his most important role). Colin was rewarded with MHSOB Life Membership in 2001 and a worthy Certificate of Merit recipient. • Joke of the Week 18 year-old Patrick goes to confession. "Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose woman!" he says... The priest asks, "Is that you, little Patrick?" "Yes, Father, it is." "And who was the woman you were with?" "Ah, I can't be telling you that, Father, I don't want to ruin her reputation now." "Well, Patrick, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later, so you may as well tell me now. Was it Bridie O'Shaunessy?" "I can't say Father - honestly." "Was it Ginger Murphy?" "I'll never tell." "Was it Rosie Brady?" "I'm sorry, but I can't name her." "Was it Mary O'Callaghan?" "My lips are absolutely sealed Father." "Well I'll bet it was Suzie O'Brien, then?" "Please, Father, I can't tell you for it wouldn't be fair on her." The priest sighs in frustration. "You're very tight lipped, Patrick and I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. You can't be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself and don't let me see you again for a while now." Patrick walks back to his pew, and his friend Murphy slides over and whispers, "What'd you get?" "Four months vacation and five good leads!" • A Good Day’s Night! The Hampton Rovers AFC & the wider community were brought together as one to support the fight against depression and to help out a great clubman in Joel Day. Saturday 28th April’s function was a huge success raising $20,000 for the Day Family while raising awareness of depression. 360 people passed through the doors at Boss James Reserve making it one the biggest Rovers functions ever. V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 $1,000 was also raised for Beyond Blue, the national depression initiative, through the selling of blue wristbands. Highlights from the night also included Billy Brownless and Tim Watson auctioning items including a morning with the SEN Morning Glory crew, Billy telling the famous “kick after the siren” and “kick over the silo” stories, and many more. The club would like to thank everyone involved: from those who volunteered their services in both organising the night and helping out on the night, to those who donated and purchased auction items and donated on the night. For more information on depression, please visit Beyond Blue at www.beyondblue.org.au • Olivia’s Pub Review VAFA Admin Officer and regular pub devotee Olivia de Castres presents the first in her series of pub reviews, concentrating on pubs supporting the VAFA community. Those who were keen readers of last years’ Amateur Footballer will have realized that “Willo” and myself have experienced a promotion / relegation of our own as scribes, with Peter stepping up to C section to replace myself. Rest assured, my relegation was self-induced (due to an offseason change of clubs) but I’m sure Old Paradians and Hampton Rovers will hope to give me plenty of good things to report during 2007!!!! Maybe / Maybe Not Old Paradians – It would be a tough call to tip the Bundoora boys for a ‘double drop’, and I’m not about to suggest that here. No doubt Mark Spinoso is taking charge of a club which is ‘rebuilding’. Unfortunately, they can’t afford to ‘bottom out’ because that would mean only one thing in VAFA footy….nup it won’t happen. There’s been plenty of rumor mongering during the extended off-season, and with the inevitable 2 week delay to the season proper, it’s high time we found out what’s truth, and what’s fiction. At the start of the season, every team’s hopes will be high, but there’s no doubt some will be more hopeful or optimistic and genuinely confident. Prahran – With Paul Greenham taking over from Staff, the change at the top will bring new ideas and some fresh enthusiasm to the list. I understand some handy inclusions have arrived, and this may mean a better showing by the Two Blues in ’07. Unfortunately, access to facilities and grounds is likely to play a big part in the early season form of most teams. Those who have managed to train regularly (on grassy grounds with Sherrins), rather than haphazardly (on basketball courts or on the beach), will have an immediate advantage. So, with only a modicum of confidence, let’s have a quick rip through the teams which make up D1 and then look forward to these weekends’ clashes. Oakleigh – a bit of a smoky, they’re coming into D1 boasting a very handy home ground advantage. No doubt they will play hard physical footy, and every side will be happy to leave Scammell Reserve with the points. Peninsula – the longest journey in the VAFA? Well they were until South Mornington joined the club XVIII!!! The Pirates will be keen to jump another rung in a hurry, given their solid junior program and the gains of last year. Flying Old Geelong – with a couple of losses, but many acquisitions, the Como Park boys will be keen to atone for their surprise exit last season. They have good depth and will take a power of beating in 2007 Battling Bulleen Temp – controversial, maybe. However, they’ve lost several quality young players who were expected to play major roles in their rebounding from last years’ astounding round 18 debacle. Whilst their U19s won the flag last year, stepping into senior footy is a different thing altogether. Will need to finish strongly. Old Mentonians – I’ve seen the OMs first hand and it’s no surprise, given the quality of their home ground at the moment, that they are way ahead in their preparation than most sides should be. Ben McGee has introduced a greater level of hardness and discipline to the club, and this should see them thereabout at the right end of the season. Yarra Valley – apparently not as deep in their list as they would want, and need to keep their best 22 on the park as often as possible to be a chance for a finals’ repeat. The Bushrangers are known for fighting against the odds, and at this staged, they’re stacked against them. Hampton Rovers – just knocked off Monash by 12 goals a fortnight ago, and have had a ‘feel good’ off season with some fundraisers and a change of coaching staff generating many positive vibes at Boss Reserve. Should challenge strongly. 20 Therry Penola – is this another amateur club suffering from being surrounded by suburban clubs with cash? Methinks so and, despite the Herculean efforts of their long standing players and committee, I can’t help but think something’s gotta give in 2007. Congratulations on winning promotion and a big welcome to D2 for South Melbourne Districts and Bentleigh. To Emmaus St Leos and Banyule good luck in trying to get back up to D1 again. My predicted ladder: 1. Aquinas OC 2. Emmaus St Leos OC 3. Werribee AFC 4. Salesian AFC 5. South Melbourne Districts 6. Glen Eira AFC 7. Williamstown CYMS 8. Banyule AFC 9. St Johns OC 10. Bentleigh AFC To those teams I have picked to make the finals best of luck, and to those who I have chosen to miss out, please try and prove me wrong. Emmaus St Leos OC AFC $1.40 v Bentleigh $2.70 My spies have told me that Emmaus St Leos new coach Ben Pilley has put his players through an arduous preseason, and the goal for 2007 is to get straight back up to D1. Baranello, D’Amico and McKenzie are all class players and the Animals are sure to be thereabouts come finals time. The success of Bentleigh this year will come down to one man. Chris Sharp. The bald headed goal kicking machine doesn’t really look like a footballer, but he has an excellent knack of finding the footy and kicking goals. If he gets injured the Demons will struggle. Being unsure of how many or if any Dimmatina’s will be pulling on the red and blue this season and taking on a team that won four games in D1 in 2006, I expect Emmaus St Leos to be too strong in this one. Emmaus St Leos by 37 points. Glen Eira AFC $1.70 v Williamstown CYMS $2.05 Glen Eira look to have held on to the majority of their 26 better players for 2007, and with skipper Alex Tsirogiannis going around once again the Saints should be pushing for a finals berth come September. My mail is that Steve Vamvakis has been on fire during the preseason, snagging a bag of eight goals in one practice match, and the experienced forward could be a nice value bet for the sharp shooter award this year. Williamstown did extremely well to avoid relegation in 2006 and after making an atrocious start to proceedings last season the boys from Willy will surely be ready to put some early wins on the board. With Tim Wheeler, Ben Hynes and Shaun McGuiness all facing up for yet another season there is enough class in the ranks from the side across the West Gate, but at Packer Park I expect Glen Eira to be too strong. Glen Eira by 12 points. Werribee AFC $1.50 v Banyule AFC $2.40 Werribee have always been hard to beat at Soldiers Reserve and with an excellent junior program in the Western Suburbs the Tigers are sure to play an exciting, fast paced type of football this season. The departures of Nathan Addamo, Daniel Lee, Ben Stornebrink and Dean Whitten are sure to be felt, but new coach Kirk Norton is sure to have done his homework during the pre-season and will have his troops ready to fire firstup. Banyule impressed during the pre-season with a ten goal victory over the Monash Gryphons, but have had a few of senior players join Kew in the off season, and although a couple of handy acquisitions from McLeod are sure to fit in well, a trip to Werribee in the opening round is a stiff proposition. Expect the experienced heads of Keogh, Kidd, Carson to get Werribee over the line by 31 points. TODAY’S D2 MATCHES Emmaus St Leos v Bentleigh Glen Eira v Williamstown CYMS Werribee v Banyule Salesian v South Melbourne Districts at Southern Oval, Mulgrave St Johns v Aquinas V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 27 Salesian AFC $1.33 v South Melbourne Districts $3.10 Despite the retirements of Ivan Bobetic and Mark Canavan, Salesian should once again feature in the finals race in 2007. With Mick Hazell arguably the most polished footballer in the division, Salesian have a guy that can win a game off his own boot with a bag of goals. Big ruckman Patty Dunne is probably the key player for Salesian and new coach Robbie Mallet will be hoping for an injury free season from his number one tall. Simon Ionnides and Dimitri Kalogiannis are the young players to keep an eye on for the team from Chadstone and with the possible signing of Nick Rutherford, Mallett should have plenty of talent at his disposal. South Melbourne are ready for the step up to D2 and as long as Paul Cheevers and Steve Aqulina can stay fit I expect them to perform admirably in this division. Tough ask to travel to Bosco Street first up however. Salesian by 22 points. St Johns OC $2.40 v Aquinas OC $1.50 St Johns have done well to recruit Chris Cachia and Robbo from Syndal Tally Ho but will sorely miss the services of John Ryan up forward this season. Aquinas on the other hand were close to promotion during 2006 and with veteran Glen Whitehead once again captaining the club I expect the side from Ringwood to go well this season. All the early money for the premiership has come for them. These are the type of games that the Jocs failed to win last season, and unfortunately for the boys from Doveton I expect Aquinas to win this one by 25 points. Retrospective by Geoff Reilley 5 YEARS AGO - 2002 CEO, Phil Stevens, reminded us that the busiest time of the football year was over and we could now “get on with the games”. The coaching accreditation course had been completed as had the Coaches’ Night, the Sponsors’ Night, the Season Launch Dinner for Presidents, Secretaries and Members and many more gatherings. There was a new Umpires’ Adviser, Brendan Carland and a new representative contest for our C-D clubs against the Southern Football League. And there was an exciting start to the season in A Section when the Old Xavs, as they had done for the past seven years, watched the unfurling of the A Section flag, only this time they were at Marcellin and the home club were the proud ones exhibiting their spoils from the 2001 season. The game was fast, full of great one on one battles and only Marcellin’s inaccurate kicking in front of goal may have stopped them from starting with a win. The Xavs were too good, 13.10 to 10.16 and the best players were – Scanlon, Stoney, Brushfield, Mollard, Blood, Occleshaw (Xavs) and Hansen, Romanin, Cox, Thiesz, Jarred, Goodwin (Marcellin). A Section coaches were Paul Cooper (De La Salle), Simon Dalrymple (Marcellin), Luke Soulos (MHSOB), Paul Fahey (Old Ivanhoe), Dale Tapping (Old Scotch), Leigh Carlson (Old Trinity), Tim O’Shaughnessy (Old Xavs), Peter Nicholson (St Bernards), Mike McArthur-Allen (SKOBS) and Michael Conlon (Uni Blues). A Section Field Umpires were – Jamie Kvins, Graeme Hunichen, Rob Sneddon, Steve McCarthy, Anthony Damen, Albie Firley, Jason McNiece, Peter James, Wayne Hinton and Mark Gibson. 10 YEARS AGO – 1997 The CEO, Phil Stevens, welcomed all amateur football followers to a new season and announced a change of Umpire Adviser. Michael Sneddon was appointed to take over from Brian Bulluss, who had held the job for the previous 5 seasons. Jason Frenkel was appointed A Section scribe replacing the respected Don Blackwood and Jason paid 34 tribute to the quality of Don’s work. In perfect conditions, the Old Xavs unfurled the 1998 A Section Flag at Toorak Park and then proceeded to pummel their opponents, St Bernards, unmercifully in the first term kicking 10.2 to zero. As the afternoon wore on things did not get much better for St Bernards as Xavs dominated all over the field but at least Xavs’ scoring was restricted to a degree. Dan Richardson booted 8 goals, Jones and Bourke added 11 between them and David Landrigan and Tim Wood were outstanding throughout the game. Jason Gollant was the only multiple goal score for St Bernards with 2 and was joined by Tim Dobson and Ben Chatfield among the hard to find best for the visitors. The final score of 26.10 to 7.2 suggested the Xavs would again be a power and the Bernies coach, Gary Foulds, would have much to think about. B Section scribe and St Kevins stalwart, Terry Quirk, reported on the Mazenod versus St Kilda South Caulfield game and highlighted the fact that Mazenod had found a focal point up forward in Chris Harrison who finished with 8 goals. Mazenod were in charge by half time and looked very sound with a comfortable 22.8 to 13.13 victory. Better players – Harrison, O’Hara, Schofield, Ballenger, Murray, Young (Mazenod) and D’Agostino, Gilmore, Diamond, Tkocz, Buck, Astapenko (St Kilda). 20 YEARS AGO – 1987 VAFA President, Jim Hawkins, in his opening statement in The Amateur Footballer spoke thus – ‘In an era of disruption in football in general, the VAFA is pleased to be able to offer Member Clubs an optimistic future’. He reminded all VAFA followers that, unlike the professional football bodies below the elite level, the VAFA was continuing to grow its ranks. The 1986 All Australian and Victorian Captain, Dominic Spillane (Old Paradians), adorned the V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 35 cover of the Amateur Footballer and played in his team’s first round win against the reigning A Section Premiers, Collegians. Despite Collegians’ Richard Herman with 6 goals and excellent games from their stalwarts Irvine, Lemon and Bickford, Paradians ran away to score a huge win, 24.13 to 12.8. Skerrit,Woods, Grills and Gleeson (6) were outstanding for Paradians. Having won the B Section pennant the previous season, Paradians looked to have every reason to believe they would be a power in A Section as well. Old Trinity and Fawkner, Grand Finalists in C Section the previous season, both started their B Section campaigns in fine form to win against St Kilda CBC and Uni Blacks respectively. 30 YEARS AGO – 1977 The 85th year of amateur football commenced with the trial, for one season, of free interchange of the 20 players in each team. There was some disappointment expressed by the VAFA Executive in that the number of teams competing had dropped from 140 (1976) to 137. B Section grand finalists from the previous season, Marcellin and Caulfield Grammarians, began their season strongly with respective wins. Marcellin received solid opposition from Uni Blues but the comfortable margin of 19 points at the final siren was due in the main to Dillon, Crimmins, Carrucan, Butler (4), Mahon and Toniolo for Marcellin. Standish, Schauble, Church, Melville (3), Hindle and Hager were Blues’ best. Caulfield ran away from Old Trinity 19.16 to 10.14 with best players – Lester, Lean, Morphet, Clark, Griffiths, Long (Caulfield) and Robison, S Emerson, Jones, Williams, Beer, Cowley (Old Trinity). 100 games to Old Brighton’s Club Captain, Ian Paroissien. Ian joined the old boys in 1969 and proved to be not only a close playing defender but a very attacking one with considerable skill. Ian was best and fairest in 1971 and also served as Honorary Treasurer. 40 YEARS AGO – 1967 George McTaggart, Editor of The Amateur Footballer, announced that the taking over of Elsternwick Park by the VAFA for the 1967 season meant that it was the Association’s third “central” ground since inception, the previous central grounds V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 being Olympic Park No 2 Oval and the St Kilda Cricket Ground. Caulfield Grammarians and Uni Blacks in A Section performed the opener at the new headquarters but the Blacks prevailed easily in the finish 10.18 to 7.11. Best players – Sinclair, Crouch, McGregor (3), Saunders, Shackleton, Costello (Blacks) and Herington, Barker, Ward, Chaffey, J Tootell, P Hore (Caulfield). In B Section it was a close tussle between Uni Blues and Uni High School Old Boys with the Blues winning 11.5 to 8.16. Best players – Wilson, Loftus-Hills, Rutherford, Rhoden, Church (Blues) and Prosser, A Hume, Kinnear, Heaton, G Boag, Nettleton (UHSOB). Old Melburnian’s Murray Peden played his 100th game and having given his club great service both on and off the field, received the plaudits of the OM’s supporters. 50 YEARS AGO – 1957 During the summer preceding the commencement of the 1957 season, amateur players and amateur football generally received outstanding recognition during Melbourne’s Olympic Games. On Friday 7th December, visiting sporting enthusiasts from all over the world had the pleasure of observing a demonstration Australian Rules football match. The game was played at the main stadium and was between a team selected from the VAFA and a team of amateur players, currently playing in either the VFL or VFA. The VAFA team was victorious (12.9 to 8.7) in modified conditions such as slightly smaller playing space (by 5 yards in both length and width) and with less than the normal time between quarters. The spectacle met the requirements of the International Olympic Federation who always asked the host nation to include in the games, a demonstration of a national sport. The Honorary Secretary of the VAFA, Jack Fullerton, as organiser of the demonstration match, also sat with HRH, the Duke of Edinburgh, to explain the finer points of the game. One of the participants that day, boundary umpire, Jack Wilson, is still active in amateur football today heading up the team of gatekeepers at Elsternwick Park. Jack also played VAFA football and was a premiership coach with Ormond Under 19’s and continues to devote his time to the great traditions of amateur football. 35 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 36 D3 SECTION by Stephen Clarke What a great off season – so many INS and OUTS to keep us busy. David Hicks is finally out, Lara Bingle was in and out all summer, Shane Whitnall wants to be in the media circus but he should stay out, Brendan Fevola is on the outer at home but in form against the Dons yet was he ever in with Lara Bingle ? ? Damien Oliver has ended his run of outs in Group 1 races, my old mate Aaron Baddeley is in with God and winning tournaments again, crazy haircuts in the AFL are out, Borat is an outstanding comedy that we all should watch, house prices continue to be out of this world, Neale Daniher is in more strife than Tony Mokbel to keep his job and holiday makers have found that the rain fell mainly in Spain this Easter Break. PREVIEWS Our first game is between two historic members of the VAFA, where Elsternwick entertain Powerhouse at the postage stamp. The hosts played finals in 2006 and desperately want another crack at that level. The boys from Ross Gregory have some great players and will find this transition to D3 well within their grasp. I am tipping Elsternwick due to the home fixture by just a gaggle of points. Two many younger clubs in the league, Swinburne take on Hawthorn at Rathmines Road – our first and only Derby for the year! Derek Theone is back coaching at the Razorbacks and it was under his guidance that they won their 2003 flag. The boys should welcome him back with a win ! Old Westbourne kick off their campaign at home against Ivanhoe – a team boasting just one away win last season. The visitors have to accept that some days they will be the pigeon in this league, yet other days – like in round one – they will be the statue. The home team here by lots. Victoria Park in Kew is the venue for Dave Witchell’s men to tackle Latrobe. In the past, Kew have walked the ‘thousand steps’ for inspiration but that won’t translate into much come game day! The visitors started 2006 in competitive fashion, but the wheels came off in the second half and there were ‘latrocious’. I’m giving the red and black army the benefit of the doubt here by a few goals. Finally, West Brunswick who hope to be finals bound, 36 travel many miles to play Monash. The Gryphons will be hoping for an upset but this will be more like giving Dracula the keys to the bloodbank. The visitors will take the win and some percentage to boot. In the two’s I see wins for the ‘House, the Razorbacks, Old Westbourne, Latrobe and the Magpies. We all did the rain dances over summer but the heavens just wouldn’t open up. So after a two week delay due to ground closures, we finally get to play “for real” today. We’re sure that players and umpires alike will be that little bit fitter due to our extended pre-season training. Here we go, bring it on!! Web Site We encourage all umpires to constantly check our web site at http://www.vafaua.asn.au/ Our Webmaster Tim Sutcliffe has done a fantastic job with this over the summer with a whole new look to the site. All information is there if umpires are unable to make it down to training, therefore missing out on all sorts of news. Well done Tim, and thanks for starting the season as Leah’s temporary replacement in Umpires Corner as she enjoys an extended trip to the US. VFL – Here we come!! Congratulations to a few of our young umpires who have earned positions with the VFL after trialling with them over summer. Here’s a recent article compiled by Tim Sutcliffe for our website. ‘In a major triumph for the VAFA Umpires Association, eight umpires have been promoted to the VFL for season 2007. Field umpires: Rob O’Gorman, Daniel Silfo and Tim Saunders. Boundary umpires: Adam Rogers and Matt Jenkinson. Goal umpires: Lucas Robson, Michael O’Donnell and Daniel Brooks. All made the VFL list for 2007. And Vaughan Sidebottom was elevated to the VFL supplementary field umpires list. After a long and arduous pre-season campaign involving training, fitness testing, coaching sessions and practice matches, they were informed of their success by the State Director of Umpiring at Victoria Park on Tuesday March 20th. Brian Goodman, VAFA Director of Umpiring Operations, is excited by the promotions and believes this is a significant occasion for the VAFAUA and its members. “This is a real feather in the cap for the VAFA Umpires Association. All members of the VAFAUA should be proud of their contribution to the development of these umpires. The encouragement on the training track and the support in matches by fellow umpires has made a significant contribution to the development of these field, boundary and goal umpires.” Goodman was also pleased that the umpire coaching and development programs in the VAFA were achieving results. He believes that the programs in place give young umpires every opportunity to succeed. Field umpires coach for the VFL Development Squad, Adam Davis, was full of praise for the young umpires recruited from the VAFA. He was particularly pleased with their skill development, fitness levels and maturity. “The time spent at the VAFA has given these umpires an excellent foundation for the start of their VFL careers.” said Davis. Davis also added “that the challenge now starts for all the umpires and they must look for consistent performances to progress at the VFL.” Goodman’s attention will now turn to VAFA season 2007 and the development of the next crop of young umpires with VFL aspirations. But Goodman, like all members of the VAFA Umpires Association, will keenly follow the progress of all these enthusiastic umpires.’ VAFAUA Office Bearers - 2007 President - Rob Mayston, Vice-President – Grant Joyner, Secretary – Alan Stubbs, Assistant Secretary – Craig Brajtberg, Treasurer – Paul Jones, Assistant Treasurer – Patrick Coulthard, Social Secretary – Albie Firley and Building Manager – Vin Vescovi. Summer Social News & Congratulations Back in November, goalie Kevin (Chilli) Segota wed long time partner Jane in a beautiful wedding at Patterson Lakes with quite a VAFA flavour. As well as a large number of umpires past and present in attendance, the celebrant was none other than VAFA legend Ken Bremner who for once in his life was a little intimidated to be in a room full of umpires. Not forgetting the irrepressible VAFA Executive and media megastar Tom Brain, who was best man. Well done to Rob and Kerryn Sneddon on the birth of Connor, and Grant and Lisa Wardrop on the birth of Mitchell. Anthony Simpson, who is currently the father of three boys is soon to become the father of twins. Well done Simmo, we look forward to the arrival in May. Possibly Anne (Mrs Simmo) will be sending you off for a little bit of “surgery” soon? Recruitment For any players out there who may have found the pre-season too long and painful (and you realise you just can’t do it anymore), it’s not too late for a career change. Yes, the legs will get a work-out, but you won’t suffer the physical body torture of a footballer. If you wish to join our ranks call Brian Goodman at the VAFA on 9531 8333. RESPECT THE UMPIRE – RESPECT THE GAME!! V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 41 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 42 D4 SECTION by Ed Sill Finally, back into it! An extremely exciting D4 this year with the usual supply of two sides relegated form D3, a promotion from the Clubbies and some new boys in town. It will be very difficult to get a form line on this one with at least 4 rounds required before things started to settle. Albert Park - One of the few sides for whom the drought won’t cause as much grief as to others. Very competitive last year and will be aiming for finals action. Box Hill North - Last year’s big improvers and went close to toppling the eventual premiers in the first semi. Expect to progress further this year. Bulleen - Slightly disappointing last year and will be hoping for some of their veterans to have injury free seasons. Will have their eyes on the finals but improvement is needed. Eley Park - Solid year after coming up from Clubbies. Depth was a problem last year and will need to work on that in 2007. Eltham - Great home and away season before injuries and form saw them get bumped out of the finals in straight sets. Great coup in attracting Garrard as playing coach. Premiership favourites. Mt Lilydale - Back to D4 after a short recess in the clubbies. Will be looking to consolidate first year back. North Brunswick- Disappointing last year however some strong rumours of recruiting coups over the summer. Will be eyeing finals actions but a good start is a must. Richmond - Made some solid strides last year where they were competitive for most of the season. Word is further improvement can be expected in 2007. St Mary’s - By far the largest beating of drums are emanating from the Saints. Star recruits apparently abound with a goal kicking machine in the offing!! Will be aiming to make the D4 stay a short one. South Mornington - Welcome to the Ammo’s! Impossible to get a form line through the Mornington boys so the first few weeks should be interesting. Simply not sure. Syndal Tally Ho – A tough off season for the Sinners as a few stars try their luck elsewhere. Great club spirit will no doubt help. Uni High - Disappointing 2006 with the resultant dip to D4. Word is plenty of numbers on the track with hopes of a strong year. Strong finals contender. To the games! Uni High host Syndal with both sides having extremely interrupted pre-seasons. Uni High for mine. Box Hill North welcome new boys South Mornington in a game that will give an early indicator to form lines. Always 42 like home sides early in the season so Box Hill to give off to a great start with a win. Two highly rated sides meet when Albert Park journey out to Eltham. The Turtles are keen to avenge for their quick departure last year whilst the Falcons would consider this one a bonus. Eltham to start the surge. Local derby of sorts when Eley Park makes the short trip to Bulleen. Both sides were mid table last year and desperate to push up. Again, home team for me as Bulleen should record a win. The cellar dwellers of 2006 meet when Richmond hosts North Brunswick. I felt North weren’t far of the mark early last year before the year started to go pear shape. Richmond made some improvements and looks likely to continue in 2007. Not ready to confirm the improvement just yet so might stick with North Brunswick. Finally, St. Mary’s trek out to Mt Lilydale. No form line on Mt Lilydale just yet however the Saints have the drums beating loudly. Saints for mine. Top four, Eltham, St Mary’s, Uni High and Box Hill North with the Turtles my flag tip! The aim of the challenge is to collect 1,000 blood donations during the footy season. Winter is a time when the usage of blood is increased, but many people are unable to donate due to colds and flu. That's why the donations of VAFA players, friends and families are so important during this time. The results of the 2006 Challenge are below. The top 3 clubs (by percentage) for 2006 were: 1. Caulfield Grammarians 38.1% 2. Peninsula OB 33.8% 3. VAFA UA 25.2% Caulfield Grammarians were also winners of the VAFA Blood Challenge in 2005. Can they make it 3 years in a row, or will Peninsula or VAFA UA beat them to it this year? The Challenge runs from this Saturday 28th April - Saturday 1st September. Remember that if you donate before the start of June, you will be eligible to donate TWICE during the challenge - DOUBLING YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING! (Donors are eligible to donate blood every 12 weeks) You have received some registration forms in your kit this year, so please distribute these to your players to encourage them to donate. Extra forms are available at the donor centre, in the Refreshment area. Please ensure that each player fills in a form when they donate in order to register their donation for your club. These completed forms should be left at the donor centre. It will be fantastic to have some new Captain Bloods on board this year - welcome! And it's great to have many of you back again as Captain Bloods in 2007. Thank you all for your commitment to help save lives (and maybe win some great prizes along the way!) If you have any questions about the challenge or would like to book in a group from your club to donate, please contact Natalie Reid on 9694 0265. Looking forward to working with you this year! V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 47 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 48 U19 SECTION by Charles Beaton (U19’s 1), Duncan Palmer (U19’s 2) & Justin Aitken (U19’s 3) U19 SECTION 1 Another season is upon us, lets be honest it’s going to be hard to top last year, but we will give it a bash. Finally the season looks set to start, and after months of warm wind and fine dust, ten U19 Premier Division teams begin the climb up Mount Vesuvius in search of the elusive and coveted U19 section 1 flag, the “JS McCann trophy” As a famous DJ once said, “It’s a walk-off……..” Who’s hot De La La La – Great win last year over highly fancied Xavs. Word is they are just as big and strong. Look out for a very consistent model of the La this year. OX – Always on top, I’d be ignorant not to mention the “Desert War” of the premier competition. Look for them to be grinding down the straight come seasons end. Scotchy – Bit of a steam train last year. 18 goal win in final practice match and this year lead by the capable Sean Lieth. Look out for marked improvement this year with plenty of direction by Coach Brendan “Buzz” Hart. Marcellin – Smashed Collegians in the latest practice match and word has it that coach Stephen Layt is assembling a team fast enough to challenge this year. Blackers – stepped up to the plate and taking on Premier Division is a big step. I liken them to a young racehorse that needs to be harnessed into the real deal. All the ability in the world but a bit green, now lets see what coach J Gray can do with it. Big chance fellas! Who’s not Give me a couple of weeks but could be a tough year for the SKOBS and with no news from the Blues, I can only assume they will be thereabouts again. Is that good enough? Down to the serious business and selection time. This week I will go for De La Salle, St Bernard’s, Old Scotch, Rupo and Xavs. Its back, “the lock”. This week it will be Cats to beat the Kangas – over 39.5. Get on it. CORRESPONDENTS On a brighter note, I will be relying heavily on feedback this year. Please contact me with any correspondence, best players and opinions. Until next week……happy punting. [email protected] (please note new email address). 48 U19 SECTION 2 It has been a long build up to season 2007 with the drought creating a 6 month preseason. For most U19’s this equates to four weeks rather than two. This may mean that the U19’s this season will be better prepared for the season's start, particularly teams with a large university constituent. Grounds will still be hard and will initially favor the quick running sides, whilst later in the season, the sides with greater depth will come to the fore. Predicted Ladder after the Home and Away Season Each year large changes in personnel make predictions exceptionally hard in U19’s. Early feedback on Section 2 suggests that this could be a very even, competitive section. Pre-season form has been mixed for most sides, and although player quality appears strong, numbers seem to be low across the board. Old Camberwell and St Bedes Mentone, as premiers of their respective divisions last year appear to be early favorites; however there is also strong support for any number of other sides, with Old Brighton a regular smokie in early correspondence. Old Camberwell will be looking to premiership players Caine Hillier (competition leading goal kicker), and Chris Wright to help them to consecutive flags. Looking into my crystal ball Old Brighton St Bedes Mentone Old Camberwell Collegians Caulfield Old Paradians Old Melburnians Whitefriars Beaumaris Banyule Good luck to all this weekend, and I look forward to you proving me wrong. However with only three responses from club contacts thus far, tipping is more guess work than reason. My selections this week are Old Brighton by 13pts, Caulfield at home in a 3pt thriller, Old Camberwell by 25 pts, Collegians away, and Old Parade by three goals. V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 49 CORRESPONDENTS Match reports to [email protected] or [email protected] I cannot watch 10 matches so please send me reports. U19 NORTH The stunning last quarter success of BulleenTemplestowe last season shows how quickly U19 form can change. With three new teams in the section most sensible judges would wait until at least round five prior to making predictions. It is far more fun to provide the coaches with some ammunition. Predicted Ladder after Home and Away Season All the early feedback suggests that last year’s finalists Fitzroy, Aquinas and Old Xaverians will be the yardsticks, whilst Rob Smith will again attempt to guide the ‘Golds’ into the finals. However, the preseason form of the likes of Gareth Rees and David Walsh at Therry Penola suggests that this section may be far less predictable. Fitzroy Reds Therry Penola Aquinas Old Xaverians Emmaus St Leos St Bernards Old Westbourne De La Salle North Old Boys St Pats Rupertswood I truly hope you can all prove me wrong, though I would love to get one tip correct in my first round. Dry grounds will suit sides with on-ball depth, so the traditionally quick Rupo may set this trend from Round 1. solid 2006 but a promotion to Section 3 will see it struggle to get the runs on the board regularly enough. La Trobe University ($34) 8th – Cohesion, class and a history of success means I see the Uni boys not coping early before rattling home with some respectable wins to lift it from the doldrums. MHSOB ($11) 6th – MHSOB can be more unpredictable than the quality of my fathers roast dinners so they will be hot and cold all year and therefore be a rollercoaster ride for all involved. Oakleigh ($4.50) 3rd – I like the form of Oakleigh, who seem to find a big goalkicker each year, play consistent football which plagues several clubs (see MHSOB) and have one of the best grounds in the competition. Old Essendon ($9) 4th – Bomberland like their seniors show much promise yet fail to deliver, maybe it’s the year of the baby bombers but I don’t think it will be. Old Ivanhoe ($4.50) 2nd – The Hoes are normally a polished school unit who play a tempo brand of football which will see them in the thick of it come September. Old Mentonians ($21) 7th – Freshly promoted Panthers are the new kids on the block and some early victories wouldn’t surprise but when it all settles down, they will be on the receiving end more often than not. Old Trinity ($4) 1st – Strong club determined to erase memories of 2006 and with the lush training surroundings of Bulleen, it should ensure the Eagles had an un-interrupted pre-season and go into the year as flag favourites. Ormond ($7) 4th – The Monds will fly the suburban club flag with Oakleigh and push the school clubs all year long. CORRESPONDENTS Good luck and please send match reports to [email protected] or [email protected] Round One Preview Old Ivanhoe shape up against Bulleen Templestowe and should prevail down at Chelsworth. Ormond head out to Bundoora to meet La Trobe in a game that will be a tight tussle with the visitors sneaking home two goals. Bentleigh go to the postage stamp in the rounds closest encounter where I think they will have a little edge at the final siren over MHSOB and win by a goal. The Panthers will cause the upset of the round by rolling the Bombers. Finally in a possible grand final preview, Oakleigh host Old Trinity in an early treat that will establish some bragging rights with the home team to win by three goals. U19 SECTION 3 Here are all the early flag odds and ladder predictions. Bentleigh ($51) 9th – The boys down the Nepean Highway may have spent a bit too much time in Port Philip Bay working on their tans and not enough on the training track. They have the ability to surprise but will need to conjure some magic to play finals. Bulleen Templestowe ($101) 10th – The Ants had a U19 – SOUTH Here are all the early flag odds and ladder positions. Ajax ($7) 3rd – Proud club with an elite setup will see the Jacka’s cutting the mustard in 2007 with a lot of their home games to be played on the vast expanses of Sportscover Arena. Hampton Rovers ($34) 6th – “We live by the seaside” brings smiles to the faces of all as some of the more My selections this week are Old Xavs at home by 6 points, Rupertswood by 2pts, Aquinas by 23, Reds in a one point thriller, and De La Salle by 17pts. V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 49 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 50 interesting theme song lines, but the Rovers will need to make Boss James a fortress as they look to lift on their mid-table finish from 2006. Mazenod ($5) 1st – The Nodders are my flag tip as they have a strong mature-age senior team that won’t rely on too many young guns allowing for a settled outfit to push for the silverware. Monash Blues ($4) 4th – Recruiting will determine much of the Blues fortunes for the year and I think the Clayton campus boys will sneak into the finals. Old Haileyburians ($2.75) 2nd – Would have to be the undeniable favourite after a 2006 where they lost no games however with young Stefan Martin off to the VFL and all the young jets will be blooded in the seniors meaning instability may cost them pole position in September. Parkdale Vultures ($34) 8th – Great jumper, even better ground and facilities, Parkdale would win the flag on this alone but sadly four quarters need to be played and they will win some but not enough. Peninsula ($34) 7th – As close to interstate travel as you an get in the VAFA, Peninsula need to snaffle a few early wins to play finals but depth problems may rob it of consistency and a birth in the top four. Prahran-Caulfield ($21) 5th – The two-blues enter a new Under 19 team that will take time to mature, much like a bottle of Penfolds Grange, and that will take many years. Salesian ($251) 10th – Unlikely to field a team in 2007. St Bedes Mentone Tigers ($51) 9th – The Tigers will be a wait and watch in 2007. They do play there Brindisi St Ground like champions much like the West Coast play Subiaco, minus the drugs. Round One Preview The merged outfit of Prahran-Caulfield head out to Mazenod and in what will be a tough initiation, Mazenod will win by plenty. Monash Blues welcome SBMT off Springvale Road to campus with a close first three quarters before the Blues kick clear after orange time to record a seven goal win. Vultures and Ajax are both teams that aren’t known for being up and running early so I flipped a coin, saw heads, Ajax to win. Old Haileyburians meet Salesian with the Purple and Blacks home comfortably. The bay boys face off here with Hampton to ease the cost of the travel and return with the points over Peninsula. 50 TODAY’S U19 MATCHES U19 (PREMIER) Old Scotch v University Blues University Blacks v De La Salle at University Oval at 9:20 a.m. Rupertswood v Marcellin St Bernards v Old Carey Gr at St Bernards College at 9:20 a.m. Old Xaverians v St Kevins U19 (2) Beaumaris v Old Brighton Gr Caulfield Gr v St Bedes Mentone Tigers at Glenhuntly Oval at 9:20 a.m. Old Camberwell Gr v Whitefriars Old Melburnians v Collegians Banyule v Old Paradians U19 (3) Old Ivanhoe Gr v Bulleen Templestowe La Trobe University v Ormond MHSOB v Bentleigh Old Mentonians v Old Essendon Gr Oakleigh v Old Trinity Gr U19 (SOUTH) Mazenod v Prahran-Caulfield Monash Blues v St Bedes Mentone Tigers at Frearson Oval, Monash University at 9.20 a.m. Parkdale Vultures v AJAX Old Haileyburians - Bye Peninsula v Hampton Rovers U19 (NORTH) St Bernards - Bye De La Salle v Old Westbourne Rupertswood v North Old Boys/St Patricks Col at Salesian College Sunbury at 11:40 a.m. Old Xaverians v Emmaus St Leos at Sportscover Arena at 9:20 a.m. Fitzroy Reds v Therry Penola V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 51 UNDER-19 – PREMIER MARCELLIN Coach: Stewart Gray Coach: Stephen Layt J. Nothing is new in football!! All is well with our competition, which is bigger than ever before with thirty six teams vying for the right to participate on Sports Cover Arena. Former teams return and new sides have entered for what is hoped will be a season of fierce competition. Section 1 Old Scotch have often started slowly and for this reason I am selecting St Kevin’s to open the season with a win. Promoted Monash Blues host Mazenod, who did not enjoy much success in 2006. Reports received indicate a rejuvenated Mazenod and I tip them today especially as University players are not noted for their pre season dedication. Old Melburnians, under new Coach, David Landrigan, host De La Salle, who also have a new mentor. I favour De La Salle, who are always a force in this competition. Prahran play Old Xaverians 2, whose player nucleus will have benefited from last season’s experience in the Section. The Prahran veterans, who can play great football, are not noted for their early season fitness and today Old Xaverians have a great chance to start with a win. I will stay with Prahran and pick them to win. Reigning premiers, Old Xaverians face the University Blues, who will field a lot of new players. The Xaverians should win as the Students may take time to learn each other’s strengths. Section 2 University Blacks play St Bernards on the Crawford 56 Oval. St Bernards, who just missed the four in 2006 may take the points after a close tussle with the Blacks, who may take time to settle into a cohesive unit. The Caulfield Grammarians and Emmaus – St Leo’s game should be a physical affair as neither side has been noted for its pace over the years. At home I lean to Caulfield, whose attention to training should have been the more intense (B section as opposed to D2 Section) I select Fitzroy Reds to defeat Old Trinity at McHale Stadium as the reds should be the more settled side. St Bede’s – Mentone Tigers played well in Section 1 last season and at home today they should defeat Collegians many of whom will be journeying to strange surroundings.. Two newcomers St Francis Xavier Beaconsfield and Kew meet out at the S.F.X. College. The Kew team has come from the joining of the V.A.F.A. Club with North Kew. Given the long journey south east and the fact the home players know each other from school days, I select St Francis Xavier. Old Brighton, keen to atone for a disappointing 2006 season travel to play Old Scotch at St James Park. I suspect Old Brighton will be the more settled side and as such should win. Section 3 I select Beaumaris to open with a win over Therry Penola, who disappointed last season. Old Carey return after a season’s absence to play Whitefriars, who have lost many players. Despite V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 57 their changed personnel, I select Whitefriars on the small Victoria Road, Reserve. Marcellin, who from reports have been training solidly should win at home over newcomers, Old Westbourne. Fitzroy Reds play the returning Bulleen Templestowe, who have not played in Club XV111 since Round 3 in1995. The “Bullants” will take time to adjust to their new coach and so I select Fitzroy Reds. Two of last season’s disappointing teams, Old Scotch and North Old Boys/ St Patricks play at St James Park. I select Old Scotch purely because they will be playing at home. Two sides used to playing on a big ground, LaTrobe University and Old Geelong play at Bundoora. Home ground advantage should enable La Trobe to open with a victory. Another two newly formed sides in Oakleigh and Box Hill North play on the Scammell Reserve. The home ground advantage should enable Oakleigh to open with a win. Team Managers.
