PRODUCT 3: SHORT STORY A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WOODWARD CAMPER By Tristan Sommovigo My day starts early because I’m really excited to be at Camp Woodward. I wake from the middle bunk and grab my stuff from my cubby, trying to be quiet to not wake anyone from sleeping. I head down the hill to the cafeteria for breakfast. My favorite day is when they have French toast and bacon. After breakfast, I grab my skateboard and head to a skate park called Lot 8. When I walk into Lot 8, I see somebody dropping into a 13-‐
foot ramp and do a massive air and it gets me pumped to skate. I meet up with my group and my counselor and stretch before we start skating. After we are done stretching, we head to another area called the Snake Run because Lot 8 gets very crowded. The Snake Run looks just like a snake. It’s a concrete downhill run with multiple ramps that get you lots of air. It can be very dangerous if you get too much speed. We are just there to warm up before we hit another park for the harder tricks. It is sunny and warm but breezy so the day is off to a good start. After the Snake Run, our group heads to Target Plaza, an outdoor plaza-‐style concrete skate park with ledges and stairs. I want to work on backside flips down the 7-‐stair. That is 180-‐
degree turns with a kick flip down a 7-‐step staircase. My first try, I stuck it but it but it got away from me but on my second try I landed it. After Target Plaza, instruction was over and I went to lunch at one of the food vendors that has hot dogs and burgers. It’s an outdoor grill called the Ball Park Grill. You can smell burgers and dogs grilling and hear everyone talking at the picnic tables while they eat. I wait in line to grab one of each – a hot dog and a cheeseburger and load them up with ketchup, mustard, lettuce and pickle. I eat there almost every day! After lunch, I go back to my cabin and get on my swimsuit and go to the pool. It’s a cool, salt-‐water rectangular pool. There are a mix of kids from cheerleading, gymnastics, skateboarding and BMX. Everyone is cooling off from the hot day and having fun. I don’t spend too much time there because I don’t want to miss out on all the other fun stuff at camp. There’s so much to do! Besides the 14 skate parks, there is the wake pond for wakeboarding and wake skating; the bungee trampoline; the rock climbing wall; the ropes course with a zip-‐line; horse-‐back riding on trails; a paintball field with obstacles; go-‐kart racing on a track; basketball; and arts and craft classes like tie-‐dye shirts and create your own skate deck. Since it’s so hot, I head to the pond for wake boarding. There is usually a line but today it was short. I suit up with a life jacket and get my wake board. When it’s my turn, I lock my feet into the boots. They hook my line up and start the motor. I zoom off towards the ramp and the ledge and I hit the ramp and fall into the water. I fell a few more times but after that, I got the hang of it. After building up a thirst, I head to the coffeehouse called Moon Doe’s – it’s a play on the name Starbucks. The coffeehouse is very modern with couches, tables and a counter for ordering. I order a Caramel Frappe and chill on the couch with one of the visiting pros – Chico Brenes who skates for Chocolate Skateboards. It’s cool because you can hang out with pro skaters and they can teach you new tricks. After my chilly beverage I’m ready for more action. So I go to Egypt, an indoor wooden skate park. I like to practice tricks on the Hubba, which is a wide, flat down ledge. I’m working on my 50-‐50, 5-‐0s, kick flip out and smith grinds. My friend Alec shows up and we hang out for a bit. Alec wants to head to The Playground to hit the mini-‐ramp, so we head there. By the time we are done it’s about 5:30pm and we are hungry! We decide to eat at another outdoor grill called the Chicken Grill. They serve Mexican style on one side and Chinese on the other. I get a chicken quesadilla with chicken, cheese and olives. Alec grabs a chicken burrito and we sit at one of the picnic tables. Our friends Anderson and Riley join us at the table and we talk about our day. I skate until about 7:00pm then I go back to my cabin and put away my skate stuff and go to dodge ball at a skate park named The School. I stay there for about a half hour and head up to The Canteen where I grab a Julip, which is frozen strawberry lemonade. Every night there is some activity like The Kick flip Contest, the Dance Contest, Talent Show, etc. Tonight is the bonfire where we make our own s’mores. After eating three gooey, melty s’mores, I head up to my cabin and get ready for bed. I stay up until eleven o’clock on my iPhone and then go to bed. The day was awesome. PRODUCT 4: AD Reflection Paper Our middle school project for 8th grade was a multi-‐genre research paper. I expected this paper to be really hard but I was happy that I could chose my own subject because I can write about something I’m interested in. I chose Camp Woodward to write about because I have fun memories of being there for the last two years, because I love skateboarding and because a lot of people don’t know about Camp Woodward and how much fun it is. The project surprised me because it was easier than I expected and fun to do. I didn’t have to do a lot of research because I knew the subject really well from having been there for two summers. The hardest part was the short story because it took a long time but it is very descriptive so that someone who hasn’t been to Camp Woodward would know a little more about it and may want to go. The easiest part was the directions because it was basically copy and paste, as they could not be reworded or it would cause errors. I really liked the visual aspect of the project and being creative. I learned new ways of doing a research project that are actually interesting and fun. The outlined helped you understand the format and plan the paper. The Works Cited was so limited because the only parts of my project that required information was the directions and the ad. So, it was an unusual project because I didn’t have to do much research and because I love the subject so it didn’t feel like work. I think a multi-‐genre research paper will help with future projects because I really want to explore Digital Media and Graphic Design in high school and college. In fact, Camp Woodward has a Digital Media program! I really like the creative parts of the project because I’m good at that. Normal research projects are hard and boring because they assign a subject that may not be interesting and they take a long time to write and you can’t do fun stuff like make an ad or write a short story. Thank you for the opportunity to choose our own subject and do something creative and fun! http://www.campwoodward.com Work Cited
