hroughout an unusually cold and snowy winter, The Inn hosted many activities that
brought residents and their families together for hours of entertainment, exploration,
and imaginative play. Programming leaders Bridget Kuzma and Cait Farren pioneered
some of the most active and enthusiastic winter months filled with fun and educational
themes such as Black History Month and the Winter Olympics.
For energetic Inn resident Isabella Fiorio, four, being able to interact with her environment is very important. During Isabella’s last visit, her mom Courtney had to push
her throughout The Inn in a pink umbrella stroller because a fracture required a cast
around her torso and both legs. Isabella’s patience was remarkable for a pre-kindergartener, but nearly missing the beginning of an Interactive Storytelling session elicited unprec-

Mission Statement
The Children’s Inn at NIH is a private,
nonprofit, family-centered residence for
pediatric patients at the National Institutes
of Health and their families. Its purposes are
to keep children together with their families
during serious illness, reduce their stress,
and facilitate their healing through mutual
support. The Inn relies on private contributions for its operating funds.
edented wiggling and pleading from her small
voice as Courtney wrapped up a conversation
with another mother. Little feet kicked at
the pillows supporting her legs and relentless
interruptions of “Come on, Mom! We’re going
to be late!” urged Courtney toward the door,
where professional storyteller, Ermyn King,
had set up for the evening.
Ermyn, the Director of Hospital and Hospice Programs for ArtStream, Inc., is a special
addition to the many programs offered at The
Isabella Fiorio, pictured above with Inn
Inn. With a background that combines early
staff member Cait Farren, enjoys the fun
childhood, arts, and health care, Ermyn’s work
and educational activities at The Inn.
in storytelling comes from the perspective that
arts are integral to the healing process. She tailors her program to the unique experiences
of the children and families at The Inn, and her stories are carefully selected to encourage
children to remain engaged with the expressive arts and the wonder of childhood. Ermyn
brings cultural artifacts that are relevant to the collection of stories she has for a given
day. Isabella attended her Arabian Nights-themed program and was amazed. “Isabella
was able to use her imagination and travel to a far away land where she then dressed up
to be a part of Aladdin’s adventure. She loved using the different musical instruments…
and enjoyed using some of the puppets and other props to be a part of the story,” says
her mom. Through this wonderful medium, Inn residents are given the opportunity to
experience empowerment and connect with heroes and heroines from traditional and
cross-cultural tales. In February, Black History Month, Ermyn shared the story of Bessie
Coleman, the first African American to earn a pilot’s license.

Kylie McPeak: Medical Mystery
I
Kylie McPeak’s parents wait
anxiously for doctors to diagnose
her mysterious illness.
t’s no surprise that young Kylie McPeak is from Sparks, Nevada. The five year-old is
exuberant and spunky despite a mysterious illness that has baffled medical experts
and scientific researchers from coast to coast.
Kylie’s troubles started at age three, in November 2007, with a diagnosis of Type 1
Diabetes. Within months, she developed a tremor in her voice. Then, in March 2008,
while the family ate dinner, Kylie had a seizure–the first of many over the next two years,
says her dad, Steve. By August 2008, Steve, his wife Gina and Kylie relocated, hoping
to find answers at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital in Stanford, California.
Steve, an Entenmann’s bakery salesman, transferred to California during Kylie’s treatments. The couple asked extended family to care for their two younger daughters, one a
newborn, the other only 1, while Kylie was hospitalized at Stanford.
But the novel plasma replacement treatments at Stanford were unsuccessful, Steve
says. The family felt as though they had few options, he adds. It was then that Gina
found the Undiagnosed Diseases Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on
the internet and asked their local doctor for help enrolling.
“We were told that if anyone was going to have answers it was the NIH,” Steve says.
The three arrived at The Children’s Inn on December 13, 2009 for a week of intensive
tests and consultations with a team of doctors and medical specialists from many of the
NIH’s 27 institutes.
While staying at The Inn, the family missed many of The Inn’s outings and activities due to medical treatments. But Kylie still managed to shine in the spotlight. A crew
from CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 followed Steve and Gina throughout their week. Dr.
Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent interviewed the couple in The Inn’s
Teen Lounge.
While mom and dad were taping interviews, Kylie played in the tree house in The
Inn’s Playroom and with the Hatch Imagination Computer Station, designed for small
hands, in the Learning Center. She also enjoyed picking out gifts for her younger sisters
at The Inn’s WINNter Wonderland, which she wasn’t completely convinced she would
actually give to them when she got home.
Now back home, Gina says Kylie misses The Inn and wants to return. She still talks
about the tree house and her young friend Benjamin who gave her hugs and crayons.
Benjamin Lopez, four, a longtime Inn resident, befriended Kylie at first sight, showering
her with affection.
Mom and dad still are waiting for a diagnosis and were told test results would take
months to gather, but they say they are hopeful after their visit. “At least we have people
working on it,” Steve says. “We’re not just watching her get worse.”

21st Annual Congressional Gala

he Children’s Inn marked its 21st annual Congressional Gala in September at
the W Hotel in Washington, D.C. with keynote addresses by Health and Human
Services Secretary, The Honorable Kathleen Sebelius and Dr. Francis Collins, Director
of the National Institutes of Health.
The talented Dr. Collins also played guitar and accompanied Inn resident Heidi
Peck, 18, on flute for a beautiful rendition of the Quaker hymn, “Simple Gifts.” The gala
helps support The Inn and its recent purchase of a home for families needing to stay
for longer periods of time–The Woodmont House. Adjacent to the NIH campus, The
Woodmont House is scheduled to open this summer for up to five Inn families.
Gala Co-Chair Debbie Dingell recognized The Inn’s “Outstanding Philanthropic
Partners”—Richard Clark, CEO of Merck & Co. Inc. and Greg Irace, CEO of sanofiaventis U.S.—for their generosity and commitment.
Inn parent Debra Peck ended the evening explaining how The Inn profoundly
impacted her family. For the past five years, her daughter Heidi has been treated at NIH
for a rare kidney and liver disease. Being a parent of a seriously ill child can feel lonely
and isolating, she said.
“When people see a child in a wheelchair or with no hair, or with a misshapen
body, they look at you with pity and fear,” said Debra. “At The Children’s Inn at NIH,
you are met with compassion and understanding.”
“We have come to realize that we are not alone in this journey through Heidi’s life.”
Happy Birthday, Shirley Howard!
T
Shirley Howard cuts the cake
at a birthday celebration in
her honor at The Inn.
he Children’s Inn celebrated the monumental birthday of a dear friend in October— Shirley Howard, President of The Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF). The
day began with a ribbon cutting ceremony for The Inn’s Reflection Space, a quiet place
whose creation was generously funded by the CCF. A luncheon was held where Shirley
was presented with a special recognition to honor the 25th Anniversary of the CCF by
Molly Mahoney Matthews, Chair of The Inn’s Board of Directors. Shirley cut the beautiful three-tier birthday cake to share with her guests, including many of the CCF Board
Members, Children’s Inn Board Members and staff.
The extraordinary support of the CCF has helped thousands of children benefit
from breakthroughs in cancer treatments, and has touched the lives of very sick children
and their families staying at The Children’s Inn, many of whom are participating in
cancer protocols. The Children’s Cancer Foundation has been and remains an integral
partner in all capital improvements at The Inn, having donated $1,500,000 since our
opening in 1990. The Children’s Inn appreciates Shirley and her Foundation for their
ongoing generosity and support.

Eagle Scout Brings New
Life to Inn Gardens
T
Eagle Scout Stephen Lippincott
went above and beyond to prepare
The Inn for a beautiful Spring.
he Inn is looking forward to the blooming of spring flowers throughout the
gardens, thanks to the hard work of an eager Eagle Scout with a green thumb.
Stephen Lippincott completed his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project by sprucing
up The Inn’s container gardens and window boxes–and raising thousands of dollars for
Adirondack chairs.
Last fall, the Kensington teenager brought his Boy Scout Troop 8 to The Inn to
assemble the colorful chairs and tables that surround the gardens and playground
at The Inn. Stephen raised money from area businesses and families to purchase 19
Adirondack chairs and a few small wooden tables.
Stephen and his troop also removed older plants in container gardens and replaced
them with new bulbs and plantings, providing lively flowers for Inn families to look
forward to this spring. The troop also planted Crepe Myrtles and other beautiful flowers which were donated. “He really did a wonderful job,” says Laura King, Director of
Volunteers and Community Outreach at The Inn.
Montgomery County Police True Heroes
F
or the second year in a row, the Montgomery County Police Department held their
Santa Ride–a meaningful fundraiser in support of The Inn’s grocery store gift card
program. Dozens of police officers on motorcycles, led by Santa on his bike, made stops
throughout the county to pick up donations on their way to The Inn. The startled
amazement on the faces of several kids when Santa remembered them by name from last
year was just one of the many highlights of the evening. Children enjoyed telling Santa
their Christmas wishes, working on craft projects with the police officers and having
their faces painted by these wonderful men in uniform—an impressive sight! The officers
delivered several thousand dollars worth of grocery store gift cards for families to use
while they stay at The Inn. The event was covered in The Washington Post and by local
TV stations.
Donald Hoskins says that his son, Jamaal
Brown, never felt comfortable around
Santa Claus until this year, when he saw
him arrive at The Inn on a motorcycle.
Inn Residents On Cloud 9
P
otomac clothing boutique On Cloud 9 has made another generous donation of
clothing to families at The Inn. Last fall, owner Carol Gowling gave six boxes of
clothes valued at more than $16,000. The boxes included party dresses and casual wear
for children, including pajamas, shirts and shoes. In the past, Laura King, The Inn’s
Director of Volunteers and Community Outreach, hosted a fashion show for families
to model the beautiful clothes donated by On Cloud 9. “This year, since many of the
donated clothes and shoes are for everyday use, the donation has been enormously
helpful for the families, many of whom are struggling financially due to their children’s
illnesses,” King says.

hristmas Eve and Christmas Day at The Inn are always a memorable time for our
families thanks to the annual dedication of Board Member Lori Wiener, PhD, and
her family, the generosity and goodwill of the Brody family, and the continual support of
Board Member Debbie Dingell. Our main elf extraordinaire, Lori and her family ensure
that stockings are hung on the resident room doors with care, while bags of unique and
wonderful presents, courtesy of the Brody Family and friends, await each family member
by the big Christmas Tree in the Living Room. After a frenzy of opening presents, families have a heart-warming brunch sponsored annually by Debbie Dingell. A traditional
holiday dinner was served late in the afternoon this year, courtesy of the Reznick Group.
Inn Family Shares Meal In Gratitude
T
he beginning of the new year brought out the spirit of giving when the Yoder family
hosted a Family Dinner for all Inn residents. Reflecting on the generosity and
warmth they have experienced staying at The Inn, while their young sons, Wilmer and
Simon, are being treated at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,
they wanted to share with other residents their hospitality and gratitude. Additional
family members came from their Mennonite community back home in Delaware to help
make and serve the dinner. In a true demonstration of thanks, a delicious turkey and all
the fixings were served, as Inn residents representing many cultures gathered together to
share in this special meal.

Olympic Champions Kim Dong-Sung
and Tate Armstrong were on hand to
cheer on Inn residents as they received
“gold medals” at The Children’s Inn
Winter Olympic games in February.
Page 6
Programs Blossom continued from page 1
The Children’s Inn hosted its own Winter Olympics on February 16th. Residents
learned about each other’s countries by making their own national flags to wear as capes
while participating in a number of exciting and creative events, including an elaborate
opening ceremony and a post-games feast. Two Olympic Champions joined in the
activities—gold medalist Tate Armstrong, member of the US basketball team in the 1976
Olympics in Montreal, Canada and South Korean short-track speed skater, Kim DongSung, who earned gold and silver medals at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
Residents attending LearnINN during the month of February got to know students
at local elementary schools through the Flat Stanley Project. Readers familiar with
Jeff Brown’s 1964 children’s book know Stanley Lambchop, a young boy who is flattened in his sleep by an enormous bulletin board but who uses his tiny width to travel
in envelopes by mail to different friends. Inn residents had the opportunity to bond
with other children in the community through exchanging handmade decorated “Flat
Stanleys.” They then took a field trip to see “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley” at
the Adventure Theater in Glen Echo, Maryland.
Other programming highlights from the beginning of 2010 include an art contest, a trip to DC’s Natural History Museum, a visit from Wootton High School’s
Club INNcredible, and a professional sports-themed Bingo Night with signed sports
memorabilia for prizes. There are many opportunities to help fund the activities that
engage residents and their families at The Inn. Contact Bridget Kuzma, Family Program
Coordinator, at [email protected] or 301-451-3717 for more information.

his Spring, The Children’s Inn at
NIH unveils its five core values. They
will be displayed throughout The Inn, as
we share these important beliefs with our
constituents. Our goal is to incorporate
these values into everything we do on a
daily basis when serving the families of
children participating in research studies
at the National Institutes of Health. We
encourage all Inn residents, volunteers
and community members to join us in
modeling good examples of these meaningful core values on a daily basis.

Special Donor Inspired
by Inn Residents
Melissa Resnick works at the National
Library of Medicine at the National
Institutes of Health. It is not out of
the ordinary for her to know about
The Children’s Inn nor for her to give
a generous donation of toys and
crocheted hats for Inn residents around
the holidays. What is out of the ordinary
is that Melissa crocheted every hat
lovingly by hand even though she is
blind. She taught herself to crochet as
a teenager because it was a hobby that
she could conquer–being able to feel
each stitch. When asked why she chose
to donate to The Inn she says, “These
kids are an inspiration to me. They keep
holding on and always have hope. They
keep going.” Melissa’s colleague, David
Osborne, (pictured
with her on the right)
helped to transport
all of the wonderful
toys and hats to
The Inn and she is
very grateful for his
kindness.

PEOPLE
Welcome, Ed Greissing
New Board Member
The Children’s Inn at NIH welcomed
Mr. Edward Greissing to the Board of
Directors in October 2009. Ed serves
as Vice President, Corporate Affairs for
sanofi-aventis U.S. He is responsible for
internal and external communications,
as well as the company’s community
involvement and philanthropic
activities. Additionally, he leads
federal government, state government,
public policy, reimbursement, global
institutional relations, external affairs,
alliance development and advocacy
activities. Love for The Children’s Inn
runs in Ed’s family, as his children
have volunteered over the years.
Currently, his daughter, Kirby, a high
school senior, provides administrative
assistance for the Community Outreach
and Volunteer Program at The Inn. Ed
and his wife, Lisa, regularly donate
tickets to concerts and activities at
The Verizon Center for Inn families to
enjoy. “Ed’s most recent phenomenal
acquisition for The Inn is a pledge
of $10 million for the
creation of a sanofiaventis U.S. Legacy
Fund—A way to secure
the future of The Inn
for families in years
to come,” says Kathy
Russell, CEO at The Inn.
Combined Federal
Campaign
The Children’s Inn thanks the supporters
of the 2009 Combined Federal Campaign
(CFC) for raising more than $110,000.
A vital source of operating income
for The Inn, contributions through

Full of Gratitude for Spring Mill Bread Co.
F
Employees at Spring Mill Bread Co. are
dedicated to making a quality product
and sharing it with their community.
or the Spring Mill Bread Company, giving to The Children’s Inn spans as long as
the business has existed in its Bethesda, Maryland location. Hatib Joof, the bakery’s
Manager of Operations, explains that they make whole grain breads from scratch in
small batches and keep nothing longer than 24 hours. This commitment to freshness
and a desire to play an active role in the community inspired Steve and Katherine
Rurka, Spring Mill owners, to begin donating their quality bread to The Inn over 16
years ago. With four children of their own, the couple thought that The Inn was the
perfect place to donate their bread, a quality product they hoped would make the kids
smile. Every Friday, dedicated Inn volunteer Sara Armstrong picks up the delicious,
hearty bread and brings it to The Inn for residents to enjoy throughout the weekend.
Spring Mill employees remember affectionately the many years when the late Wally
Horner, devoted Inn volunteer, picked up the bread weekly. “There’s a hole that can’t be
filled,” Hatib says, “he knew right where to go, every Friday. We still have his picture on
our wall.” Spring Mill also suffered a tremendous loss this winter with Steve’s passing,
after a 7-year battle with cancer. The relationship between The Inn and Spring Mill
Bread Company continues to thrive today, due in large part to the efforts of these two
gentleman, both magnanimous in spirit and dedicated to the well-being of children in
the community. The Children’s Inn at NIH is grateful for Spring Mill’s support of our
families.
