Christmas 2013 MINN-IOWA CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING KJLY KJYL KYCY KJIA KJWR KJTS KJTT 104.5 FM 100.7 FM 95.5 FM 88.9 FM 90.9 FM 88.3 FM 88.3 FM Blue Earth, MN Eagle Grove, IA Mason City, IA Okoboji, IA Windom, MN New Ulm, MN Story City, IA – PERSONALLY SPEAKING – [tÄy _|à@hÑ tà V{Ü|áàÅtá Regardless of what image the title of this article may have conjured up in your mind, be it known that I am not planning on an inebriated celebration this holiday season. To explain why I am writing about being “half lit-up” will take a little bit of background. So, let me begin by saying that… Like so many “empty-nesters”, Lynette and I have the experience of having to share our children and grandkids at Christmas. One Christmas, the grandkids visit the in-law set of grandparents and the next year they come to us. I’m happy to report that this Christmas it is “our” year! And the grandchildren will be visiting our home for an extended stay over the Christmas holidays. In happy anticipation of their pending arrival, and wanting to assure them a “Christmas” look to the house when they do arrive, I spent an entire recent Saturday putting up the Christmas lights on our old Victorian home. Adding insult to the injury resulting from the hourslong untangling preliminaries, I was dismayed to find that when I plugged in the various strands of lights for a quick test, with a good share of the lights, only half of the strand would light. Faced with the problem of the “half-lit”, the tedious search began for the broken bulb or poor connection that was the culprit. Once the problem bulb was located and replaced, it was with great delight that I By Matt Dorfner, MICB Executive Director would see the previously dark half of the strand join its twinkling “better half” in becoming what it was created to do and shine with a welcoming Christmas light. Installed on the house, with all bulbs working diligently, I can imagine the delight on our 4 and 6-year-old grandchildren as they arrive from Texas and see the house happily shining with the joy of Christmas lights. I suspect that, insightful reader and Kinship Christian radio listener that you are, you may be joining me at about this time in my little story and wondering if there are any “broken bulbs” in your life. Perhaps, the broken bulb is a hurt that you suffered in the past. Perhaps the poor connection that has led to the darkening of a portion of your shining witness for Christ is due to the slow erosion of the time you spend in the Word or prayer. Or, maybe the bulb of fellowship was smashed years ago with a friend or family member over something that, for the life of you, you can’t even remember as being as all that important. Happily, our God is able to identify all of those broken bulbs and poor connections in our life that have resulted in our being only half lit-up. Faced with that knowledge, our next step should be to ask the Lord to do His work in our lives so that we, too, may shine… from the beginning to the end of our life strand…with His grace and eternal light. May you have a blessed…and bright…Christmas! 1 Kinship Christian Radio Holiday Sounds and Specials! I really like to buy gifts for everyone in my immediate family, but this year we are looking a bit closer to the time together, focusing on that and on Christ's birth." – Beth Erdman “...is putting up an artificial Christmas tree. While growing up, a fake tree graced our living room due to my dad’s allergies. Upon getting married, I was pretty happy to begin the tradition of choosing a real tree each Christmas season. But, alas, one year the overwhelming cold and wind pushed us into the inviting warmth of “Hobby Lobby” to purchase our first artificial tree with hinged limbs even!” – Beth Siebrands “...is only celebrating Christmas with all of our children present every other year due to marriage and their splitting time with each set of parents. With the exception of a few years, I have always spent a portion of the Christmas Holidays with my parents my entire life. I assumed our children would always be able to do the same. ” – Lynette Dorfner 2 “...is singing on our church worship team for a second year. When I was a young girl I dreamt of singing and was in school choir and church choir but I didn’t have the confidence to sing in a smaller group setting. With God’s help, I have overcome my shyness and insecurity and now I am singing praises on our worship team called “Newlife”. ” – Sheri Wegner Three generations of the Penner family enjoying the food and fellowship at the recent KJWR, “Soupʼs On” Shareathon Soup Supper. Pictured above are Jonathan & Kathryn Penner, (Grandparents), Tim & Holly Penner (Parents) and Holly & Tim's children “It’s That Time of Year” As we look at the calendar (amazed at how quickly the last 12 months have passed!) the phrase “It’s that time of year” takes on special significance. As you reflect on the many events of 2013, you may also be considering the blessings and provision of the Lord. Perhaps it was a farm harvest that, although a bit later this year, was blessed by abundance. Maybe that “overage” in your savings or checking account reflects a nice Christmas bonus from your employer. Or, maybe it was just the Lord’s consistent blessing that has you looking at your financial resources with a heart of gratitude and a desire to bless others. However the abundance reached you, you may be one who is looking at “more than enough” and you would like to provide a special year-end financial gift. Please know of our gratefulness if you are able to provide such an extra gift to the ministry of Kinship Christian Radio. Be assured that whatever you may be able to provide will be welcomed with great joy and will be used by Kinship Christian Radio to broadcast the news that everyone can receive the gift of “time”…as in eternity in heaven...through faith in Jesus Christ! Let’s give praise to God for a bountiful, blessed 2013 and look forward to all He has in store for 2014!! By Tracy Jones “It’s Time to Taste and see that the LORD is good.” – Psalm 34:8 Chocolate……….is there ever a time when chocolate doesn’t sound good? “Chocolate for the Soul” is the theme of our 5th Annual “KJLY and Kinship Christian Radio Women’s Conference” that will be held on Saturday, April 5th, 2014 at Hillside church in Mankato. The day will be filled with special gifts for the all the ladies, lunch, mini-breakout sessions, and our nationally known guest speaker, Sheri Rose Shepherd. Sheri Rose is a woman who can relate to almost any woman’s battle. This former “Mrs. United States” grew up in a dysfunctional home and was severely overweight as a teen. As a young woman, she battled depression and an eating disorder. She understands the pain that comes from a broken home and she knows what it means to fight for freedom from your past. Sheri Rose has been speaking at churches and women’s retreats for 20 years and was a “Focus on the Family” broadcast guest for a touching and hilarious two day presentation this past summer. She has a very refreshing way of bringing the Word of God to life and knows how to renew the Eternal Hope in our hearts. Her speaking style is humorous, heartwarming and inspires everyone to make their life count for eternity. Women and girls of all ages find themselves constantly thinking about what they should not eat, or the things they cannot do as a Christian. Sheri Rose Shepherd will encourage you to embark on a new adventure with faith and food. She reveals the coaching tips that enabled her to lose over 50 pounds… and keep it off… share specific biblical alternatives to common cravings, and offers fun recipes and Bible life coaching. God created us to enjoy His goodness and it’s time to let go of guilt, grab hold of grace, and recapture the life God craves for us to live! Get Your Girlfriends…Get ready to LAUGH a lot, Let go of Guilt, Get REAL, Get Healthy & Fall in LOVE with GOD all over again! “It’s time to taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” – Psalm 34:8 2014 KJLY Womenʼs Seminar Speaker Sherry Rose 3 One of the things I never expected that I would be doing at Christmas... but now find myself doing … “...is hanging Christmas stockings for our two cats (that I really don’t even like!) and filling them with toys and treats.” – Bev Cother “...is singing on our church worship team for a second year. When I was a young girl I dreamt of singing and was in school choir and church choir but I didn’t have the confidence to sing in a smaller group setting. With God’s help, I have overcome my shyness and insecurity and now I am singing praises on our worship team called “Newlife”. ” – Sheri Wegner “...is to wait until mid-morning or after to begin opening our gifts to one another. When the kids were still living at home, they were up at the crack of dawn, waking us up, anxious to see what they got. Now it’s me waiting on them!” – Steve Ware “...is NOT decorating my home! It looks like I'll be too busy going "over the river and through the woods" to Grandma's house. I'll have to enjoy hers instead!” – Beth Crosby “...is decorating minimally in recent years. Christmas is my favorite time, but I wish I had someone as talented as Lynette Dorfner to come beautify my home for the season." – Julie Baluczynski “...is making sure I'm sitting at a certain table for Christmas dinner so I'm not anywhere near the lutefisk!!!.” – Tracy Jones “...is putting up a fake Christmas tree. Growing up in Wisconsin, where there’s an abundance of Christmas trees and at reasonable prices, there wasn’t any question about it: we would have a real Christmas tree – it was just a matter of which one we could afford each year. Yet, since moving to Iowa, my family has erected an artificial tree. But, through the generosity of a special listener, we have been blessed this year with some funds to put specifically toward a REAL Christmas tree, so my kids can experience the joy and smells of a genuine evergreen as we gather around for our Christmas festivities! – Jay Rudolph “...steering clear of the malls and most of the crowded stores. Instead of going shopping, I mostly give monetary gifts. It's much easier, less walking, and the kids are able to get what they need.” – Doug Johnson “...putting up an artificial Christmas tree. Somewhere over the years, I chose to stop paying what I thought was too much for something that will be dead in three weeks. A pastor friend gave me a fake tree several years ago and I have used it ever since. – Scott Pieri 4 Part of the early crowd of over 200 KJIA listeners who attended the KJIA Sharathon “Soup and Sweets” supper at 1st Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake. Thanks to the great work and participation of our wonderful “KJIA Ambassadors”, it was our biggest…and best….soup supper ever! Sitting (left to right) Audrey Wheeler, Bob Van Wyk and Stephanie Van Wyk. Standing (l to R) Rody Pedersen, and two (of our many!) KJIA Ambassadors, Lauri Pedersen and Debbie Clark If you look really close at the expressions of Kinship Christian Radio Board of Directors President Gene Stallkamp (Left) and Executive Director Matt Dorfner (Right), you can see that they hope they donʼt drop the massive cake celebrating KJLY”s 30th anniversary date of November 29, 1983! Surrounding the cake are just some of the many visitors who joined the KJLY family of listeners during the recent exciting KJLY Shareathon at the KJLY studios in Blue Earth. (P.S. Standing next to Matt and hungrily eyeing the cake is Kinship Christian Radio announcer Scott Pieri!) axãá yÜÉÅ KJIA By Lynette Dorfner KJIA Business and Community Outreach coordinator The fall colors have faded and many signs of the upcoming Christmas celebration adorn our homes, offices and communities. It is a busy time - parties, concerts – and many events worthy of our time. As you make your Holiday plans, we would be honored if you would "Save the Date" and grace us with your presence at the 4th Annual “KJIA Christmas Open House!” On Tuesday, December 10th the KJIA Outreach and Business office will be ready to greet you between the hours of 11AM and 2PM with delicious, hot beverages, meatballs (the meatballs were a HUGE hit at last year’s open house!)and a scrumptious array of Christmas cookies. The KJYL Community Outreach office is located in Spirit Lake 1/2 miles west of Walmart on Hwy 9. As we already have our 2014 planning calendars out, we want you to know that we cherish and value the time we, as KJIA staff and KJIA Ambassadors, spend with you. Taking an early glimpse at some of our future plans…In 2014, we will be participating in many area activities including the “Family Fun Fest” in Spencer, community parades and presenting our very own, “KJIA Listener Appreciation BBQ Picnic” in June (more exciting details to come)! If you desire to volunteer side-by-side with members of the Christian community in the Lakes area, we have many opportunities at the ministry of KJIA and Kinship Christian Radio. Monthly mailings, occasional office work, parade volunteering and the KJIA “Ambassadors” are just a few of the examples where you can assist in this wonderful broadcast ministry. For more information on the many volunteer opportunities available, call Bev or Lynette at the KJIA Office at 712-332-2428 or email [email protected]. You are a very important part of the ministry and we look forward to your presence! Remember, there is always an open invitation to stop by our office and share what the Lord is doing in your life. Or, if time presses, just send us an email through our website at KJIAradio.com or call us at 712-332-2428. Merry Christmas and God bless you richly in 2014! A Christmas Present for Your SmartPhone (And you, too!) It’s ready! The brand new Kinship Christian Radio App is now available. If you own an iPhone, simply go to the App Store, click on the “iPhone Apps” tab, search for “Kinship Radio” and download. For Android phones, go to the “Google Play Store”, search for “Kinship Radio” and download. It’s as simple as that to have one button and anywhere access to 24-hour Kinship Christian Radio. What’s more – it’s free! (Remember to search the app stores for “Kinship Radio”, not Kinship Christian Radio). And, yes, you can also download the Kinship Radio app to your iPad!) It doesnʼt look all that impressive but this satellite dish will soon be shooting the Kinship Christian Radio ministry 22,000 miles into space where it will be relayed back to earth to each of our Kinship Christian radio stations. This rather significant infrastructure upgrade will help stabilize the consistency of our programming and…should the Lord lead and provide…allow for the establishment of Kinship Christian radio stations anywhere in the 48 contiguous United States, parts of Canada and even Mexico! 5 As we tuck away the extra office supplies used during our recent KJCY Shareathon , we are reflecting on the goodness of God and His gracious supply! Our thoughts are filled with gratitude for all the generous Faith Promises, food donations and volunteer hours shared by you – our faithful ministry partners. May you be richly blessed for your generous and giving hearts! As we clean up after Shareathon, it makes room for our beautiful, glistening Christmas décor’ which we hope you will stop by and enjoy in person. In fact, we cordially invite you to stop by the KJCY Studios in Mason City for our 3rd Annual “KJCY Christmas Open House” to view our Christmas decorations, share some warm fellowship and enjoy delicious treats and beverages on Thursday, December 12th between the hours of 11 AM and 2 PM. You may recall that last spring we held our 1st Annual “KJCY Volunteer and Ministry Friends Appreciation Dinner” and it was an amazing time for all who attended. We had such a wonderful time that we are already in the early planning stages for a similar KJCY Appreciation Dinner that will be held in April of 2014 – stay tuned for more details to come after the first of the year! We love saying “thanks for all you do” in this way – please plan to join us. There will be additional 2014 area events that will provide wonderful opportunities for the KJCY staff to spend time with old and new friends alike in many area communities. We look forward to time together during community celebrations, parades, Women’s expos and conferences and our own KJCY events. By Matt Dorfner, Executive Director STILL TO BE DONE Q SHARE-A-THON RESULTS It was a wonderful…(and tasty!)… evening for the many of KJCY listeners who attended the free-will offering KJCY “Soup supper” during the recent KJCY Shareathon. Choosing from two different kinds of Chili, three kinds of soups, breads and every kind of pie imaginable made for a great time of food and fellowship! Q And may I extend one more invitation to you? – KJCY is in need of people willing to give of their time to help in the office, at KJCY events, preparation of monthly mailings, and other volunteer opportunities for the ministry. If you are inspired to respond to this invitation, please contact Diane at the KJCY studio 641-424-5529 or email [email protected]. This is such a wonderful opportunity to “hang out” with some God’s people. ”THERE’S MORE !” One of the pleasures I have each year is to participate on both sides of the microphone during Shareathon. First, I have a great opportunity to explore the life stories of our Kinship Christian Radio guests in an interview setting as these guests share their lives in Christ and love of the radio ministry. And, like you, I also have the opportunity to act as a “listener” during the times I am on the road traveling to and from the various Shareathons and their related events. It was during one of these commutes that I was so able to listen to a Shareathon interview featuring an area Pastor and his wife who shared about the impact of Kinship Christian Radio in their lives. Readily admitting that they came from a “rougher” background, both the Pastor and his wife shared beautifully about their awakening to the things of the Lord and how the ministry of Kinship Christian Radio was a significant part of what the Lord used in their life. Finding Kinship Christian Radio a “safe” place where they could hear about God, they found themselves by degrees drawn into Christian fellowship, a good church and, eventually, answering a call to seminary. This couple has now begun a church that is designed especially to attract those who come from a similar nonchurched background. How exciting it was to hear of and see the arc of God’s work in this vibrant couple and to realize how Kinship Christian Radio was a part of what the Lord used to bring about their spiritual growth and ministry to others! Listening to stories like this points out in wondrous color the impact that your support of the ministry of Kinship Christian Radio can and does have in the lives of listeners. As I say thank you to each who have shared their “Faith Promise” during the recent Shareathons, may I also share the need that still exists? For whatever reason, the number of people responding to Shareathon this year was down at each of the stations. As such, we still find ourselves in significant need of financial resources for the quickly approaching 2014 year of ministry. May I ask once again that you consider a Shareathon Faith Promise to help us meet this need? You can send your Faith Promise gift to the station or, if you like, simply go on-line at any of the station web sites and submit your Faith Promise quickly and securely. Thank you and God bless you for your partnership in this ministry! 6 KJLY KJYL KJCY KJIA KJWR PO Box 72 Blue Earth, MN 56013 KJLY.com PO Box 325 Eagle Grove, IA 50533 KJYL.org PO Box 1069 Mason City, IA 50402 KJCY.com PO Box 738 Spirit Lake, IA 51355 KJIAradio.com PO Box 125 Windom, MN 56101 KJWRradio.com NEWS FROM KJYL Wow! We wrapped up another stellar two-day Share-athon on October 31st! The evening concluded with more than 300 faith partners coming on board and nearly $120,000 in faith promises. But, most importantly, the Lord was glorified by some amazing testimonies and by the devoted service of His people coming together to present such a spectacular event -- including our annual free BBQ cook-out with carnival games, a juggler, face-painting, and more! We are abundantly grateful to all who helped to make this Share-a-thon another very special and productive time of ministry. As you may know…or even remember first hand…KJYL went on-air on February 20, 1994, and we are looking forward to (Lord willing) continuing to proclaim the Gospel of Christ into our 20th year and well beyond! In celebration of this 20th anniversary, we are already planning some great 20th Anniversary events. The first of those is a ‘KJYL Listener’s Party” at Twin Lakes Christian Center near Manson on Saturday, March 1, 2014. This day-long party will feature a free luncheon, lots of winter outdoor and indoor family activities including a toboggan chute, ice skating, basketball and volleyball tournaments, crafts/games for kids, music, and much more! We are also encouraging families to come and stay for the weekend, as Twin Lakes is offering our group a discounted rate to stay the night of February 28th and make a weekend out of it. We truly hope you’ll make plans to join us… so we can thank you for listening and supporting KJYL during the past 20 years of broadcasting. (If you can join us, thanks for sending us an RSVP by e-mailing [email protected].) We have lots of other concert, seminar, event and parade ideas in mind for 2014… but you’ll simply need to stay tuned in for more details on those as they develop! May the Lord bless each of you, as we soon move into yet another New Year!
