Welcome
Much like the majestic moose, the Algonquin Gateway Business & Tourism Association
covers a physical area just south of Algonquin Park in the eastern quadrant of the
Haliburton Highlands, Ontario, Canada. From west to east it includes the communities
of Irondale, Gooderham, Tory Hill, Wilberforce, Harcourt, Highland Grove and Cardiff.
Conveniently located less than two and a half hours from the Hwy 401 corridor in
several directions, making our area within easy reach.
The Algonquin Gateway Business & Tourism Association was formed to promote this
spectacular Ontario tourist destination and showcase the many services, events and
business opportunities that are available throughout this “Gateway” to Algonquin Park.
Members of the Algonquin Gateway Business & Tourism Association are proud of their
community and are dedicated to improving business and tourism in the entire region.
The area has and always will be a place of serenity, and calls out to many just as it did
to those pioneers so many years ago. Who can deny the incredible beauty of the rolling
hills, the crystal clear lakes and streams, and the clean northern air? The great outdoors
beckon those who are active in canoeing, kayaking, biking, fishing and hunting, hiking
or just plain walking – and let us not forget those who are content just catching a
glimpse of our incredible and diverse wildlife.

Our Communities
IRONDALE - community furthest west
located on County Road 503
Irondale is one of the very earliest of
Haliburton Highlands’ settlements,
originally called Devil’s Creek. The
settlement began in 1870 after large
deposits of iron ore were discovered
in the area. A general store and post
office opened in 1874, a church and
school quickly followed. The IB&O (Irondale, Bancroft & Ottawa) Railway was
built to transport ore from the mine. In 1880 both the mill and town site were
destroyed by a forest fire. In 1881 the mine was taken over by the Toronto Iron
Company, who renamed the post office Irondale. By the mid 1880s Irondale had
three hotels, boarding houses, two stores, two churches, a miner’s cottage and
barrel factory. The mine was operational until 1900.

GOODERHAM -east of Irondale, junction of County Rd 503 and County Rd 507
The community of Gooderham, originally named Pine Lake, was founded in
1873. The lake it is nestled against was also originally named Pine Lake, now
Gooderham Lake. Stories about the name change in the 1890s vary although
all seem to involve the Gooderham & Worts Distillery. Gooderham’s main
industries were farming and logging. The first sawmill was completed by 1875
using the waterfall between Gooderham Lake and the Irondale River. By the
1950s Gooderham was home to sawmills, three general stores, a barber shop,
confectionery store, lodge and the infamous Skyline Dance Pavilion where
people came for miles to dance to a live band. The IB&O railway had a station in
Gooderham until the early 1960s.
The present community of Gooderham offers a community centre, fire station,
library, beach, post office, grocery store, butcher shop, restaurant, gas station,
liquor store, and a building supply store.

TORY HILL - east of Gooderham, junction of County Road 503 and Hwy. 118
In the quaint hamlet of Tory Hill, one can still see the effect of the railroads on
small towns in earlier days. Though the common industries of rock and wood
were scattered throughout the outskirts of town, the village of Tory Hill centred
itself around the railway. Originally settled in the 1870s, Tory Hill expanded once
the railway came through and ran three times a week from 1893 until 1960.
In those peak years the community had four general stores, a school, church,
cheese factory, town hall, blacksmith shop, two saw/shingle mills and a garage.
The community boomed when uranium was discover in the 1950s and three
mines opened. The train whistles are no longer heard in Tory Hill but the hamlet
still maintains its unique place in history.
Today Tory Hill offers great access to the old railway line, now a multi-use trail
network. The parkette also offers a play structure for children and parking. Stop
and take a hike or just enjoy the parkette.
WILBERFORCE - east of Tory Hill on

The original settlement was South
Wilberforce on the shores of what is
now known as Wilbermere Lake. After
the development of the railway, many
settlers migrated the four kilometres
north to Pusey, a station on the IB&O
later named Wilberforce. Much like
Tory Hill, industry for Wilberforce at
the time was mining and logging. The Wilberforce Lumber Company built a
sawmill where the railway lay along the southern shore of Pusey Lake, now
Dark Lake. In the early days Wilberforce featured a church, school, post office
and store. The small town grew steadily as its new inhabitants worked in both
the mines and logging camps. In 1922 the Red Cross Outpost opened in
Wilberforce. It was the first Red Cross Hospital in Ontario and the first hospital
of any kind in Haliburton County. In the 1950s mining and logging were both
strong industries and the community continued to grow steadily.
Today, Wilberforce is a vibrant community featuring a community centre,
arena, municipal office, fire station, curling rink, pharmacy, gas station/garage,
grocery stores, bank with ATM, LCBO, restaurant, school, library, churches, post
office, Red Cross Outpost Museum, Royal Canadian Legion, realtor offices,
storage units, convenience store, general store and other unique shopping
opportunities.

Our Communities
HARCOURT - north east of Wilberforce on the Loop - County Road 648 (Loop Rd.)
Harcourt found its beginnings as a flagstop on the IB&O Railway that the railway
knew as Mumford Station. One of the newer communities in the area, Harcourt
was established in 1903 by the founding of its post office and a store. In 1911 a
railway station was built in the hamlet of Harcourt. The community grew mostly
from the lumber industry. In its early years, Harcourt was home to a lumber mill,
school, community centre, store and post office. There were numerous mines in
the area including a graphite mine just west of the village.
The present community features a restaurant, convenience store/gas
station, community centre, post office, church, building supply, storage units,
and more. A mere ten minutes north of Harcourt is the south entrance to
Algonquin Provincial Park and access to many Provincial Park trails, including the
spectacular hiking trail to High Falls.

South Algonquin Park Area At the time of his death at age 48, Grenville
Martin had assembled one of the largest hardwood operations in North America
with mills throughout Ontario and markets around the world. Remnants
of the mill can be seen north of Harcourt on Elephant Lake Road. Its head
office building is the present-day resort on the same road. Warden Murray
Fearey considered G.W. Martin to have had the most impact on the County of
Haliburton of any one individual. A tragic plane crash in October 1984 ended
the life of this most renowned individual.

HIGHLAND GROVE - north east of Harcourt on the Loop - County Road 648
This small community is rich in beautiful landscape. It is said to have been
named because it was thought to be the highest elevation in Haliburton
County. Lumber was the
largest industry in the area
followed by farming. These
hardy farmers were referred
to as rock farmers due to
the soil conditions. Highland
Grove was home to three
general stores, a cheese
factory, two churches, a
blacksmith shop, hotel and
school, as well as the railway
station. Many of its original
settlers came from other
now abandoned communities where the railway did not go such as Cheddar
and Kidd’s Corners.
Today Highland Grove features a community centre, library, museum/
genealogy resource centre, fire station, church, antique shop and a whole lot of
community spirit. Be sure to check out the schoolhouse museum, especially if
you are interested in genealogy.
CARDIFF - furthest community to the east on Hwy 118 just off Hwy 28
Cardiff began as a mining community in 1956, thanks to its uranium deposits
that were the focus of the communities economy for several years.
Today Cardiff features Ontario’s largest dragonfly and many conveniences
such as a school, several churches, a library, fire station, general store, gas
station, community centre, public pool, Royal Canadian Legion, summer camp,
maple syrup producer/equipment supplier and more.

Cheddar
Cheddar Rd off Hwy 118 west of Cardiff
Settled in 1871 as Wood’s Corners on the
colonization road, New Burleigh Road. The
settlement had two general stores, a post
office, hotel, blacksmith shop, sawmills,
two churches, and a school. In 1890 the
name changed to Cheddar. Uranium was
discovered in the area and in 1932 the
Cheddar Mine opened 1 km south of the
settlement. By 1942 the mine closed and
in the 1950s new roads were built which
bypassed this once well placed community.
It faded quickly thereafter. Today, it is a
fantastic walk on the old road through the
forest that reclaimed Cheddar. Catching a
glimpse of the almost swallowed stone fences,
you can imagine the work that went into
clearing the stones from these fields. Along
the way you will see remnants of structures
and pieces of a community long ago, now
swallowed by the forest. One of the original
buildings, the old boarding house remains
and has been restored as a private seasonal

a flagstop on the IB&O between Irondale and Gooderham; Ironsides, between Wilberforce and
Harcourt; Deer Lake Village between Highland Grove & Highway 118; Hadlington, 10 km down
Hadlington Rd off Hwy. 118 west of Wilberforce. Many communities started and ended with a
mining operation or a sawmill.

Kennaway

Starting out as a farming community
north of Harcourt, the settlement began
in the 1860s and was abandoned in the
1930s. Kennaway had a schoolhouse, grist
mill, livery stable, post office and a hotel.
The stagecoach ran through Kennaway on
route from Haliburton to Maynooth in the
late 1800s. Elephant Lake Rd./Peterson Rd.
to Maynooth was rebuilt and improved
by G.W. Martin Lumber Ltd. Their mill was
on the York River on Elephant Lake Road.
The old schoolhouse still stands, now being
maintained as a hunting camp. As you drive
or walk along the road, look closely: you will
see remnants of old structures and cleared
fields long overgrown and swallowed by
vegetation.

replaced. In the 1920s the post office and
general store were converted into a dairy.
Today it is a blacksmith studio (1306 South
Wilberforce Rd) Remnants of the old mill’s rock
configuration can still be seen in the river at

This diverse trail has trailheads with
parking in both Harcourt and Wilberforce.
Just outside of Harcourt there is a lovely
wetland full of wildlife. Stand quietly here
and you are sure to hear a beaver gnawing
at wood, a moose gobbling up lily pads or
other wildlife going about their daily life
in the wetland. The Wilberforce end offers
interesting rockcuts along Burleigh Road.
This trails utilizes old railway trails as well
as quiet rural roads and back streets of the
two hamlets it connects. It passes long
abandoned mines, the Harcourt Graphite
Mine, Dwyer, Schickler, Tripp and Clark
mines. Explore the rockcuts along your
way for Black Tourmaline, Blue Apetite and
Deep Purple Flourite.

Trailhead on Farr Road just off Essonville
Line. The trail follows the edge of a lively
wetland with plenty of wildlife. You may
hear an Eastern Bittern singing just at
sunset. The rock cuts along this trail offer
great mineral specimens as well as some
tiny creatures. The trail continues over
Esson Creek through wetlands and tranquil
forest and comes out at Tory Hill. No loop
on this trail - you need to turn around and
enjoy everything with a fresh new view
back to Farr Road. You may find what made
those tracks on the way back if you are very
quiet. The trail does continue past Tory Hill
and become the Homesteader Trail Loop.

Unleash your inner Rockhound at a local mineral collection site!
The Municipality of Highlands East is proud to be the first Municipality in Ontario
to secure public mineral collecting sites allowing everyone the opportunity to get
outside and appreciate nature in a new and exciting way. Use of municipal collection
sites is FREE and we encourage everyone to get out, enjoy the fresh air and beautiful
scenery while finding their inner Rockhound.
Hobby Mineral Collecting is a fun pursuit enjoyed by people of all ages, the perfect
event for a family outing. Adults and children alike will delight in the chance to dig for
buried treasure, get hands-on with the unique geology that defines the Highlands
region, and bring home colourful gems of your very own! Our area is world famous for
fine specimens of green apatite, deep purple fluorite, large crystals of mica, tremolite,
zircon, titanite, feldspar, and several rare and unusual species like fluororichterite, and
stillwellite. Our sites are FREE to use but you must obtain a permit from the Highlands
East Municipal office or Agnew’s General Store in Wilberforce. Once you sign the
waiver you will receive directions to the sites, and permission to collect at our sites.
Schickler Fluorite Occurrence This site was explored for fluorite in the earlyto-mid 1900s, and you can still easily find gemmy fluorite in colours ranging from
colourless to rose-red to deep amethyst purple in white calcite on the rock piles.
Associated with fluorite in the calcite are hexagonal crystals of red/green apatite,
yellow scapolite, buff coloured feldspar, and green pyroxene.
Desmont Mine (Homer Yellowknife Prospect) Here one can find beautiful
and unusual mineral specimens. This has been a popular rockhound destination
for hexagonal plates of silvery molybdenite, emerald green diopside, and the rare
mineral stillwellite These and other minerals are found in orange and white calcite.
Gibsons Road East Occurrence (Titanite Hill) This occurrence offers a series
of calcite veins carrying large crystals of gem green apatite, buff coloured feldspar,
lustrous brown titanite, and black fluororichterite. Easily accessible, and the reward
is often great. You will see where other collectors have uncovered parts of these
veins, showing you where and how these minerals occur. From there you can pick
through what has been left behind, or dig around to find a new vein!
Bear Lake Diggings While still in Highlands East, this site is maintained as a public
collecting site by the Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce. Here you will find
material similar to that at the Gibsons Road East Occurrence, but crystals can be
much larger – apatite crystals over one foot in length have been found recently!
Permits are only available from the Bancroft Chamber of Commerce.

Geocaching
Treasure Hunting with a High-Tech Twist
Geocaching (pronounced Geo-Cashing) is a family oriented game
played with a GPS receiver. Individuals known as Geocachers hide
small containers holding a logbook and assorted trinkets, and
post the location of the hidden caches as longitude and latitude
coordinates on the International website www.geocaching.com
Fellow geocachers visit the website, type in the name of the town
(or the postal code-see map) of where they would like to play the
game. From a long list of hidden caches, geocachers choose the
ones that appeal to them based on level of difficulty, type of cache
and uniqueness. They then enter the coordinates into their own
GPS and set off to find the hidden treasures. Once found, players
log their visit in the notebook and exchange items. It’s these items
that turn the cache into a true treasure hunt. You never know what
the previous geocacher has left there for the next person to find.
The game appeals to young, old and everyone in between because
participants choose their level of difficulty and go at their own pace.

Hunting Seasons
Hunting is allowed on most Crown Land, some private properties and some municipal/
county forests. Anyone using the forest should be aware of the Hunting Seasons and take
every precaution to stay visible. We recommend anyone walking, running or biking on the
trails or roadways throughout our area during any hunting season wear a Hunter Orange
vest, jacket or hat. Ensure your pets also wear a brightly coloured blanket, large bandana or
T-shirt. Be more cautious near dawn and dusk when colours such as red and green appear
brownish. Avoid wearing white as it can resemble a deer’s tail through the forest.
Throughout the AGBA area there are three Wildlife Management Areas 56, 57 & 60.
Seasons are not always the same in the three areas. Please consult the MNR website for
Small Game, Migratory Bird and nearby Elk Hunting seasons.

Making maple syrup can be a fun pastime for the whole family. You need hard maple
trees, which are best identified in the fall by their leaf shape and gold to red colour.
Trees with all crimson red leaves tend to be soft maple and are not desirable. The tree
girth at breast height must be at least 9” for one tap, 14” for two taps, 18” for three, 24”
for four. Bushy open trees yield a sweeter sap than small crown bush trees. Our 35 taps
average 50 litres per run, which yields approximately 1-½ litres of syrup. For sap to run,
the ideal temperature is -3 at night and +4 in the daytime. Usually we start 15th-20th of
March and end 15th to 20th of April.
To tap a tree, you use metal spiles and cans with lids or plastic spiles with tubing and
collection buckets. All equipment should be food-grade. Most spiles require a 7/16” drill
bit, drilled approximately 3” into the tree in a slightly upward direction. The spiles are
driven lightly until a solid sound is heard. If driven too hard, the hole will split and leak.
To make 1 litre of syrup, you have to boil 35-40 litres of sap. Boiling vessels should
be stainless steel - not galvanized or aluminium, as they impart bad flavours and
dangerous chemicals. Heat sources can be wood, electric, or gas. We use two propane
gas burners with stainless steel pans. A good source for the equipment and advice is
Camp Can-Aqua in Cardiff. It takes us 3 hours to boil 40 litres of sap. We finish indoors on
our electric stove. To bring it to syrup, the boiling point should be 7° above the boiling
point of water, at current atmosphere. A syrup thermometer set in boiling water works
best for determining your boiling point. Once you reach the desired temperature, the
syrup needs to be poured through a syrup filter to remove the nitre and clarify. Pour
into jars while the syrup is still hot and seal immediately, it will keep indefinitely or keep
it in the freezer - it will not freeze solid.
