Our 2014 event benefited from a great community turn out and perfect weather. Several thousand participants made their way to Hart Park for the annual Tosa’s Night Out tradition. There were nearly 2,000 official registrants for the family flashlight walk alone! Many of Wauwatosa’s Neighborhood Associations and Block Watches were represented at TNO 2014 as well. Thanks to our many sponsors, we were able to include family priced food and refreshments, live entertainment, free ice cream, water, and more. Special thanks to our Major Sponsor Froedtert and the Medical College. A great time was also had in the American Transmission Company kid’s area, including free inflatable kid’s rides. The ever popular WaterStone Bank coloring contest and canvass bag promotion was a big hit as well. The evening concluded with an exciting Bartolotta fireworks display sponsored by Dave & Busters of Wauwatosa. The quality of our Tosa’s Night Out event depends on the collective support of the many businesses, organizations, and individuals who donate their time, talents, and financial sponsorships. Please see the accompanying article, “Wauwatosa Thanks You,” for a complete list of our sponsors and participating groups. TOSA WATCH - Wauwatosa’s Neighborhood Watch Newsletter is sponsored by: The Wauwatosa Police DepartmentCommunity Support Division 1700 North 116th Street Wauwatosa, Wisconsin 53226 Telephone: (414) 471-8430 FAX: (414) 471-8470 TOSA WATCH provides useful information for citizens who participate in the Wauwatosa Block Watch Program. Reader comments and contributions are welcome. The success of Tosa’s Night Out also relies on the continued support of the greater Wauwatosa community and specifically our block watch captains and participating households. Once again, Wauwatosa turned out to take a stand against crime and show their support for community crime prevention. Everyone who helped make TNO a reality, including those who continue to attend and show their support for the event, should be proud of their efforts. We have a great event, in a great community, for great reasons! Thanks again Wauwatosa for another job well done. 1 “A Community Service of the Wauwatosa Police Department” Comparative Incident Analysis Wauwatosa Police Department Category Barry M. Here are a few for you. • • • • • Never leave anything of value in your vehicle, even if it’s for a short period of time. Remove not only your portable electronic devices, but everything related to those items. Get out of the habit of leaving loose change in your car. Always park in a well-lit area and if you park in the driveway at home, install sufficient exterior lighting. Always lock your car. This will result in different numbers reported to the UCR at year end. Motor Vehicle Theft The Milwaukee metropolitan area has seen a dramatic rise in auto thefts throughout 2014. The City of Wauwatosa has not been immune to this rise in auto thefts. Like our neighboring communities, auto thefts are up over 100% from 2013. Although auto theft numbers are up dramatically this year, they are near the ten year average in Wauwatosa. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the most commonly stolen vehicle in the United States is a Honda Accord. Locally, the most stolen vehicles are Dodge and Chrysler vehicles. Another trend has developed where crime sprees are often committed using the stolen vehicles as a getaway car. This makes it imperative to notify the Police as soon as possible if you suspect your vehicle has been stolen. With that said, there are several things that everyone can do to decrease the likelihood of becoming the victim of an auto theft. Always lock your car! Never leave your keys or even a spare key in the car. Never leave your vehicle running unattended. Use a “Club” or other theft prevention device. Consider installing a GPS monitoring device that can be monitored via smartphone. Did You Know… The Wauwatosa Police Department has a Facebook page! Social media is booming and we’ve become a part of it. Check out our page for info on police “Task force” events, city wide special events, road construction and closures, police training, “Warrant Wednesday”, and “Flashback Friday”. Search Wauwatosa Police Department and “Like” us on Facebook!!! 2 TOSA WATCH - Wauwatosa’s Neighborhood Watch Newsletter FREE Home & Business Security Surveys The Wauwatosa Police Department offers free Security Surveys to all Wauwatosa residents and business owners. The survey takes an objective look at your property and its security measures. Officer Donald Semega has been through extensive training in crime prevention, security measures, and safety techniques that can be used to protect one from the criminal element. Officer Semega will come to your property and inspect the inside and outside of your home or business for security deficiencies. A survey is filled out by the officer on scene which will list the problems observed and give you recommendations as how the problem can be rectified. If you are interested in having a security survey conducted at your property you can call Officer Semega at the Wauwatosa Police Department, Community Support Division at 471-8430 Ext. 5114. October - December 2014 Prescription Drop Box The Wauwatosa Police Department, in partnership with the Wauwatosa Health Department and Tosa United, is happy to announce that a prescription drop off box has been installed in the front lobby of the Wauwatosa Police Department, 1700 N. 116th St. The medication drop box was funded by the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Wauwatosa Neighborhood Watch Committee. Please help prevent the abuse and misuse of prescription medications by turning in unwanted and unused prescription medications. Remove the temptation of having these items in the home, as more than seventy percent of young people abusing prescription pain relievers get them through family or friends, which often includes raiding the family medicine cabinet. The prescription drop off box is available to City of Wauwatosa residents during normal Police Department hours. Currently the front desk of the Police Department is staffed Monday through Friday from 7am to 10pm, and between 3pm and 10pm on weekends. What is accepted: prescription medications, prescription ointments, prescription creams, prescription patches, prescription samples, in the original container, loose pill form medication, over the counter medications, vitamins, and pet medications. What is NOT accepted: biohazard material, needles/sharps, inhalers, bulk medications from clinics or commercial business, thermometers, cosmetics or toiletries, medical devices or instruments, personal care products (shampoo, soaps, lotions, etc.), or household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, oil, gas, etc.). Better Business Bureau Online Shopping Tips Shopping online is extremely popular. People enjoy getting all the same great deals – but without all the hassles. Plus, you can easily compare prices at different stores. However, with this convenience, comes some risk. When shopping online, do it safely by protecting your computer from viruses and spyware, shop only at stores that you know and trust – or that have the BBB Online seal. This seal confirms that a business has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has been determined to meet the BBB’s truth in advertising standards and follow basic privacy and security practices. Also, make sure that when you enter any personal information, you’re on a secure site with an H-T-T-P-S address, and NEVER wire money as payment for products. 3 “A Community Service of the Wauwatosa Police Department” Looking for a Few Good People The Wauwatosa Neighborhood Watch Committee (WNWC) is a group of citizens who formed a partnership with the Wauwatosa Police Department to promote neighborhood block watch throughout Wauwatosa. This working committee also helps to produce and promote our annual Tosa’s Night Out event. The success of Tosa’s Night Out gives the WNWC the ability to award grants for many community-based programs, such as “Block Party,” street banners, police safety equipment, community safety programming and literature, neighborhood Block Watch signage, “Slow Down” yard signs, playground equipment, and senior safety programming and materials. If you are interested in joining this group or just have questions, please contact the Community Support Division at 414-471-8430 or send your inquiries to communitysupport@wauwatosa .net. Trick or Treat Safety Tips The City of Wauwatosa will celebrate Trick or Treat on Sunday, October 26th from 1PM – 4PM. So, please take a few moments to review the list below and discuss the appropriate items with your children before venturing out in search of sugary treats. Costumes should be loose fitting to allow for warmer clothes underneath. Costumes should not be so long that they are a tripping hazard. Masks can obstruct a child's vision, use facial make-up instead. If masks are worn, they should have nose & mouth openings and large eye holes. Bags or sacks carried by youngsters should be light-colored or reflective. Do not enter homes or apartments without adult supervision. Walk; do not run from house to house. Walk on sidewalks, not in the street. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. Parents should have a flashlight with them. All non-costume wearers should consider wearing a reflective vest. Give your Trick or Treat bunch a meal or snack before going out. Have at least one adult go with the children, more if the group is larger. Trick or Treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. Avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots. Always check your child’s candy before allowing them to eat. And of course, have fun! TNO Coloring Contest Winners As always, it was difficult for the judges to make a decision, but the winners have been selected for the Tosa’s Night Out Coloring Contest. Each winner received a Mayfair Mall gift certificate for their efforts. McDonald’s and Baskin Robbins donated certificates as consolation prizes to all other entrants. Mayfair Mall, McDonald’s Corporation, Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors and WaterStone Bank sponsored the coloring contest.
