INTRODUCTION
On 2011 was inaugurated in Barcelona “Las Arenas” mall,
on the old bullring of the city. The rehabilitation has been
well accepted by the city and the tourism. This bullring
was obsolete for more than 30 years due to the appearing
of “La Monumental”, that made honor to it’s name and
became the symbol of the bullfighting in Barcelona.
“La Monumental” was built on 1914 on the “Eixample”
district of Barcelona with a Neomudejar and Byzantine
with capacity for around 20.000 people. For many years it
was the symbol of the bullfighting in Barcelona until 2012,
when those where forbidden in Catalonia. For this reason
the main use of the building has been relieved to events
of minor nature.
We propose to combine this fact with the new proposal
of the Barcelona’s City Council to transform “Las Glorias”
square onto a new urban park. Although this green square
will became into the center of an urban equipments ring
where “La Monumental” is placed.
Barcelona already knows the history of this bullring, do
you want to tell us it’s future?

A free proposal to improve the city. A city in constant
change and where “Las Glorias” Square takes a very
important paper in the future, although the alter ego that
is “Las Arenas” bullring at the other extreme of the “Gran
Via” of Barcelona.
How should evolve this heritage of the city? Which service
should it offer to the city? How do you think it might be?
What kind of relations should it have with the outer space?

We’re next to “Las Glorias” of
Barcelona, the new green lung of
the city. Nor should we forget the
Ciutadella Park, the green zones of
Poblenou or Sant Joan’s promenade.
The bullring “La Monumental” it’s
part of an equipments ring around
“Las Glorias” new park, with Sagrada
Familia, the National Theatre of
Catalonia, the Agbar Tower, the 22@
technological district or the Design
HUB.
“La Monumental” lives with the old
bullring “Las Arenas”. Finding each
other on an oposite side of the city, it’s
produced a direct relationship with
the “Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes”
being an alter ego one of the other.
Learning from the history we can
lay the foundations for the future.
We’re going to help you out with a
short summary of the history of La
Monumental.
This horizontal axis that supposes the
“Gran Via” cuts with Marina street and
the Diagonal Avenue in an important
point of the urbanism of the city, right
next to our place.
Finally, do not forget that we’re on
the beautiful city of Barcelona. We
love “La Monumental” and it’s an
authentical icon of the city.

Young architects participation terms
Participation limited to architecture students or other related studies. Master
or doctorate students’s participation is allowed they’ve less than two years of
the Architect graduation.
It’s limited the participation to the
Young Architects whose title don’t
exceed 10 years from its expedition.

proposals by team, inscribing the
team so many times as proposals
wanted to deliver. Although at
any case will be considered as
complementary delivers and will be
always judged separately.
Teams from different universities
and countries are allowed, as
multidisciplinary but being always
recommended the participation of
at least one architecture student or
young architect.
Teams should be composed by a
maximum of four members, being
always
allowed
the
individual
participation.
The prize will be always by team.

Edition of the team
Incompatibilities of participation
At any moment, before the deliver of the proposal, it’s possible to change the
composition of the team: change of name, add, modify or erase members and
change access data.
Once delivered the project, the edition will be interrupted and the provided
data will be definitive.
It’s not allowed the participation
of any member of the jury nor
the organization, as well as any
person with familiar or professional
relationship with them.

Josep BOHIGAS
Architect by “Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de
Barcelona”, and graduated at the Master of Architecture by
Columbia University.
At 1990 creates BOPBAA studio, and from1993 he has teached at
different universities as “Escola de Disseny ELISAVA” (Barcelona),
“Escola Tècnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona” or
“Universidad de Salamanca”.
Alejandro LAPUNZINA
Architect by “Universidad de Buenos Aires” and Master of
Architecture by Washington University with the AIA Medal in
Excellence.
Joined the University of Illinois on 1991 where he worked as
Director of the School’s Study Abroad Program in Versailles until
2013.
Actually leads the School of Architecture’s IAA at Barcelona-El
Vallès, the School’s new European study abroad program.
Enric MIR
Architect by the “Escola Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona”
on 1985, when he foundates the “M.M.A.S.S Arquitectura” studio.
From 1992 he’s been associated professor at the Projects
Department at “ETSAB”.
He’s also Judicial Forensic Expert at the Barcelona region and
member of the Heritage Commission of Barcelona’s City Hall
“Ciutat Vella” district.
Robert BRUFAU
Specialist of rehabilitation, has collaborated with architects like
Arata Isozaki, Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers, Jean Nouvel, Enric
Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue.
International Architecture Award Mies van de Rohe and National
Cultural Heritage Award granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Throughout his career he has received 31 FAD Awards and was a
finalist for more than 120 works.
