health and happiness of thousands of families, and we are proud
of those accomplishments.
We could not accomplish all that we do without your generous
support, and for that we, and the families we help, are grateful.
There are numerous opportunities to support the mission. You

HIGHLIGHTS
NJ BIZ NONPROFIT INNOVATION AWARDS NOMINATION
In 2010, FRN was nominated for the NJBiz Nonprofit Innovation Awards in the Collaboration
Category for our Get FIT collaboration with Rowan University. Get FIT was designed to
encourage healthy lifestyles in those with developmental disabilities, and it was an honor to be
recognized for this program.
GUARDIANSHIP SERVICES
FRN introduced Guardianship Services in 2010 to support and assist anyone who is interested
in obtaining guardianship of an adult member with a developmental disability. This service
allows FRN staff members to walk individuals through the pro se process so they may better
represent themselves in court as they seek guardianship of their loved ones.
DDD SUCCESS STORY
FSCNJ, an FRN affiliate, took over the troubled home and vehicle modification program with
great success. FSCNJ provides technical assistance and payments for individuals that are
navigating home and vehicle modification as well as families purchasing assistive devices. The
referrals and process will be carried out as per the Division of Developmental Disabilities.
GET FIT EXPANDS
In addition to continuing fitness programming and curriculum development at Rowan University,
Get FIT expanded to 3 community partners. These include a personal trainer and nutrition
coach, a high tech gym, and a hospital-based wellness center. Get FIT also developed a
state-wide coalition.

AUTISM FAMILY SERVICES OF NEW JERSEY
Autism Family Services of New Jerseyʼs (AFSNJ) Kidz Connect after
school care program, which helps participating families find, pay for or
create after school care for their under-18 child with a disability,
expanded during 2010. AFSNJ now has two dozen Kidz Connect
programs up and running in 5 counties. To prepare staff and mentors
at traditional after school programs, AFSNJ provides training that
greatly eases the transition for both students and staff.

toward the business community and general public, while “Make
Friends with Autism II” was designed to prepare families living with
autism to interact successfully with the community. “Sibling
Connection - Creating Positive Experiences for Siblings” discussed
the importance of providing a healthy happy household that
addresses the needs of all.
The third workshop, “The NJ Insurance Reform Act: An Autism
Update,” provided information for parents on how to seek possible
funding through their insurance companies in response to a recently
passed bill requiring health benefits coverage for certain therapies that
target autism and other developmental disabilities. Workshops were
instructed by Annette Becklund, MSW, LCSW , Adrienne Robertiello,

CAREGIVERS OF NEW JERSEY
Caregivers of New Jersey (CNJ) continued to positively impact and
improve the lives of the more than 1.1 million caregivers during
2010. With the number of caregivers in the state growing, CNJ has
become a go-to source of information and answers on all caregivingrelated concerns and issues.

As an organization that focuses on advocacy, CNJ actively
supported the paid Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Through
tenacious advocacy work, New Jersey became the third state to
guarantee 6 weeks a year of paid leave for caregivers, and 2010
was the first full year that this critical support was available.
CNJ also developed a Support Coordination team in 2010 to support
many of the 1,850 individuals living in developmental centers who
wish to transition into the community. This transition process is a
collaborative effort that allows individuals to choose where they
would like to live and who they would like to support them.
To better reach and support the caregivers of veterans, CNJ formed
a partnership with the Veteran's Administration (VA) in 2010. As a
member of our advisory board the VA will share resources with CNJ,
and help make their programs and services more accessible to
veterans and their families.

8 2010 Annual Report
The Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey (EFNJ) was excited to
celebrate its 40th Anniversary in 2010. Founded in 1970 after a
meeting of like-minded individuals in West Orange, EFNJ quickly
became involved in advocacy and education on behalf of those living
with epilepsy. In 1983, EFNJ became “amicus curiae” in a major
unemployment case that went to the NJ Supreme Court; 5 years later,
the court handed down a decision that forbid companies from firing
employees for having epilepsy.
From EFNJʼs efforts to support the passage of the Americans with
Disabilities Act in 1990 to receiving the Rosalyn Carter Institute/NJ
Caregiving Award for Helping Hands Program, EFNJ has worked to
improve lives across the state and looks forward to accomplishing
much more over the next 40 years.
2010 also saw the establishment of a long awaited statewide task
force on epilepsy by Governor Chris Christie. The task force will
develop recommendations to educate the public and healthcare
professionals about epilepsy and treatments and address
psychosocial issues, such as depression, discrimination and
stigmatization.
Approximately 125,000 New Jersey residents have epilepsy,
and in 70% of the cases, no known cause exists. Modern
treatment can control seizures in about 85% of cases,
however the public often perceives epilepsy as a sign
of intellectual disability, mental illness or aggression.
Unfortunately, this has resulted in a 30%
unemployment rate in adults with seizures.

UNIQUE EXHIBITION.
In 2010, EFNJ sponsored “Disorder: The History of
Epilepsy in America,” a unique, mobile exhibition that
took visitors on an intellectual and emotional journey
through the medical social and political landscape of this
complex and elusive disorder.
It opened on January 16, 2010 in Bordentown, NJ and
explored heart-rending stories of young children taken
from their homes and forced to live in isolated
communities, as well as positive developments in cuttingedge treatments for epilepsy that are on the horizon.
The mobile display is avaialble for traveling exhibition,

services and programs on national, state and local levels.
TOUCHING LIVES:
Introduced in 2010, Sibshops, was designed for siblings ages 8-12,
who often have the longest lasting relationship with an individual
who has a disability. In addition to receiving peer support, Sibshop
participants play games, learn about their siblings' disabilities and
the services they receive. Many brothers and sisters have feelings
that are difficult to express, even to a friend; at the monthly
Sibshops events, they share these feelings with other young kids
who truly understand.

TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES
FSCNJ OFFERS USEFUL TRAINING
SESSIONS FOR FAMILIES OF
CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL
DISABILITIES.
Since 2004, FSCNJ has been conducting training sessions
for families, and in 2010 they trained over 2,000 people.
Through the interactive sessions intended to assist families
of children with developmental disabilities, they targeted
different age ranges in order to address specific needs.
The first training session, “Life Line for the Journey”,
presents vision building, person-centered activities, and
an overview of the different state systems. The second,
“Pathways to Adult Life,” is dedicated to the needs of
children between the ages of 14 and 19 and focuses
heavily on parent education and advocacy as children
transition from school to adult life. The third, “Preparation
for Life After 21,” is a two-part training series designed to
specifically address the concerns of students with
developmental disabilities ages 19 through 21 and their
families as they quickly approach the end of their
education entitlement. This training provides detailed
information on the adult service options, encourages
participants to examine various options, and actively
participate in making informed choices.
In addition to these three core trainings, the FSCNJ
presented seven additional specialized learning
opportunities on topics such as “Make Friends with
Autism” and “Guidelines for Families Response to Crisis”.
