The Northeastern Junior College
(NJC) Plainswomen posted a 2-2
mark in the Wyo-Braska Volleyball
Tournament held Friday and
Saturday at Eastern Wyoming
College (EWC) in Torrington, Wyo.
and Western Nebraska Community
College (WNCC) in Scottsbluff,
Neb.
Friday’s matches were held at
EWC with NJC losing to Casper,
Wyo. College in straight sets 1725, 20-25, 25-27, but coming back
to sweep Central Wyoming College
25-21, 25-22, 25-21.
In the match against Casper,
ranked 20th in the nation,
sophomore Anais Vargas led NJC
in kills with 13, freshman Emily
Luke 9 and sophomore Zoey Qi 7.
In the win over Central Wyoming,
Vargas had 10 kills, Luke 8,
sophomore Allison Majerus 7 and
Qi 5 with sophomore setter Taylor
Upchurch setting up 19 assists.
Vargas had 12 digs, sophomore
Jazmin Montes 11, Upchurch
9, Luke 8 and freshman Karli
Christensen 6. Qi had a stuff/block
and Vargas and Qi served a pair of
aces each.
In Saturday’s matches at WNCC,
NJC once again split, sweeping
Williston State, N.D., College 2517, 25-20, 27-25, but falling to
fifth ranked Northwest Wyoming
College in straight sets, 16-25, 2426, 23-25.

4 deep at running back with guys
who can play.”
Edinger reported that backing
up Burkholder is junior Peyton
Kloberdanz, who has 47 yards on
22 carries. “Peyton has the same
ability as Austin because he can
also run people over and is pretty
shifty,” he added.
Junior Tyler Graber has 7
carries for 24 yards. “Tyler has
good speed, and if he can get
to the outside he is going to go,”
Edinger said.
Sophomore Gage Peterson is
an up and coming running back
on the varsity level, according to
Edinger.
“I believe Gage will develop
into a great running back,” he
predicted. “He hits the gaps hard
and if we needed him I would not
hesitate to put him in there.”
Edinger added that, “the running
game is pretty much our bread
and butter. A lot of our passing is
set up on our runs, so we have to
establish a good running game for
our passing to be effective.
“The first week of the season
we rushed for 275 yards, and it
would be nice if we could do that
every week. I think once we get
everyone healthy we will have that
potential each week.”
Upchurch setting up 25 assists.
Montes hit the floor for 26 digs and
Vargas and Luke 11 each.
Mix had a stuff while Vargas
served 3 aces and Luke and Qi 2
each.
In the finale against Northwest,
Vargas had 6 kills, Qi and Mix 5
each and Majerus, sophomore
Madison King and freshman Carly
Orth 2 apiece. Upchurch had 11
assists and Christensen 5.
Montes had 24 digs, Vargas
17 and Christensen 7. Orth, Qi
and Mix each had a stuff. Vargas
served 3 aces and 2 each for
Upchurch, King and Christensen.
NJC had beaten Casper in
straight sets on Aug. 28 in the
WNCC Classic.
“We have been struggling with
blocks and digs,” said NJC Coach
Jessica Squier, “and we continued
to struggle in the first match
against Casper. Casper came out
ready to play and we did not match
their intensity.
“The second set against Central
Wyoming we switched to a 6-2
offense, and switched up our
defense. Without practicing it I
think those adjustments made
a world of difference of how we
played. I was very proud of the
girls for consciously making those
adjustments without the coaching
staff to remind them.”
NJC opened the season Aug. 21
against Williston State and Squier
saw an improved team in the WyoBraska Tournament.
“Williston got better since the last
time we saw them,” she observed.
“We continued the 6-2 and new
defense and base and things went
smoother.”
NJC also saw Northwest for the
second time this year, losing to the
nationally-ranked team at home on
Sept. 10.
“In our last match against
Northwest I was extremely proud
of our team,” Squier said. “The
stats don’t show it but we were
extremely aggressive and the
rallies lasted quite a long time.
“It was a fun match to be able to
coach. I hope that we as a team
really start recognizing how good
we are and we can continue to
move forward in a positive direction
into region matches.”
NJC is 12-10 overall and will
host EWC tonight (Wednesday)
at 7 p.m. and Colorado Christian
university JV Thursday at 7 p.m.
