 1 STUDENT PARTICIPATION •
The debate competition is opened to Year 4 students. •
8 groups consisting of a 3-­‐member team will be randomly selected to participate in the debate competition. •
All 8 groups will compete in the preliminary round on the 1st April 2015. •
4 groups consisting of the winning team of each debate in the preliminary round will compete in the final round to be held during the UiTM’s Fifth Dental Student Symposium on the 15th April 2015. •
2 winners will be named from the final two debates. Topics will be contributed by all the departments in the faculty and covers the following discipline: 1. ODE 2. PROSTHODONTICS 3. ORTHODONTICS 4. PAEDODONTICS 5. PERIODONTICS 6. ORAL SURGERY 7. GMGS 8. POHCP 9. OMOP 10. BMS 11. OB • Topics submitted have to be fair and debatable issues in Dentistry or Medicine. Example: Restorative dentistry: ‘Non-­‐vital tooth must be restored with RCT rather than extracted and followed by an implant’ • Head of department will fill up a topic submission form and drop the form in the Debate Box on the 15th Feb 2015. • Leaders of each group will select their debate topic on the 1st March 2015 for the preliminary round and the draw for Proposition or Opposition team is on the 23rd March. • Following announcement of winner during the preliminary round, the leaders of the four winning teams will select the topic and draw for Opposition or Proposition team. • Each group has a preparation and rehearsal period from the time of topic selection to the competition day and the department whose topic has been chosen is responsible to for guidance and supervision of their group. The first speaker will introduce the topic and arguments to members of the floor. •
1st rebuttal and 2nd rebuttal speaker will build the arguments for their team and refute opposition’s major points. •
Final speaker will summarise all the points presented. New points are not allowed in the rebuttal and final speeches. •
Presentation speeches and arguments must be based on scientific facts and key opinions. They may be obtained from printed, electronic sources or expert opinion. •
Electronic devices are not allowed during the debate competition. •
Teammates or opponents may voice heckling in the form of applause and short cheer during the 1st and 2nd rebuttal speeches. Point of interruptions is not allowed in this debate competition. •
Each speaker must keep to time and any points made when time is exceeded will not be counted. •
A judge will ring the bell one time at the beginning of the 4th minute and twice at the end of the 5th minute. Points or rebuttals made after the 5th minute will not be counted. JUDGING 4 The responsibilities of the judges is to: •
Keep the timing of the debate. •
Keep track of the points, arguments and instruct a debater to adhere to rules and regulation of the debate when necessary. •
To call upon an opinion leader from a relevant discipline when necessary to verify on the data or points presented in the course of the debate during the judging process. • Score each debater and team in an impartial manner based on the following rubrics: Rubrics Excellant • exceptional understanding of topic and evidedence based 16-­‐20 arguments and clear • intergrates refutation into argument • well structured and organise • confident, good command of language and excellant performance Good 11-­‐15 • Good understanding of topic but slight lacking in evidence or support for the arguments. • Direct refutation without building into arguments • Organised but miss supporting arguments • Above average command of language Fair 5-­‐10 • Missing important points and lacking in support to arguments • Lack clear refutation and does not engage into previous arguments Repetitive • Slight nervousnes • below average command of language and presentation Poor • Presentation did not address the topic <5 • borrows arguments or refutations of previous speaker • Unorganised • Nervous speaker, poor command of language and performance • Penalised a team for abusive language, excessive heckling or for repetitive failure to keep to time. •
Confer with other judges and name the two teams with the highest scores in the preliminary round who will then proceed to compete in the final round during the UiTM’s Fifth Dental Student Symposium on the 15th April. •
