Dear Washington Township Families,
I invite you to explore this catalogue and to consider the
many wonderful opportunities that exist to enrich your
student’s learning over the summer months. As Superintendent,
I am proud that so many of our teachers spend time and
energy to provide summer learning opportunities
beyond our classrooms, and as a parent I am thrilled that
my own children are able to participate. As a member of
this community, I feel fortunate to have these many
educational opportunities available.
Washington Township Schools are a vital part of this
community. In many cases, the quality of life in Washington Township is directly
related to the quality of schools. Good schools help protect and increase property
values. And it is the offering of programs like the ones found in these pages that
remind us why Washington Township Schools are indeed superior.
Over the past several months, the Metropolitan School District of Washington
Township has undergone deep reflection, close examination, and thoughtful
consideration of what the future holds for community members and students of
our schools. Through our recent Strategic Planning process, much was learned
and discussed regarding our facilities. Some of our facilities are over 50 years old
and many of them have not had renovations for ten years or more. The district is
currently in the process of evaluating options, with the end goal of keeping our
schools competitive for student enrollment and the retention of teachers and
staff. We know that we need to have modern facilities and the funds to defray
operational costs to encourage students and parents to remain part of our Washington
Township Schools.
Please be watching in the months to come for ways that you can help support
Washington Township Schools. We know that providing superior learning experiences
not only benefits the learner, but it also benefits the entire community. Thank you
for being our supportive community in helping us to achieve both of these goals.
As residents of Washington Township, please also take advantage of the wonderful
opportunities that you will find for your students within this summer catalogue,
and know that this is one of the many ways that our schools strengthen our community.
Thank you for your continued support of our amazing schools in Washington
Township. We could not have superior schools without the supportive community
that you are.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nikki Woodson

Learning Under the Sun 2016
For students entering grades 4-8
“Science Sleuths Using Technology”
Learning Under the Sun (LUS) is a summer science-enrichment
program for students entering grades 4 – 8. The theme for the
2016 LUS program is “Science Sleuths Using Technology”.
This year our focus is using technology. We will be working with a
SKYPE Master and communicating with schools and a scientist in South
America. Students will be coding and will have the opportunity to work
with a 3-D printer. Students will participate in other high tech experiments.
We will be visiting the
Indianapolis Children’s Museum for
three half-days working on different
stations. Our overnight will be on June
16th where we will celebrate Indiana’s
200th Birthday as we visit Corydon,
Indiana, the first state capitol and O’Bannon Woods. Caves, hiking, working with a naturalist and a
cool waterpark are all part of the overnight experience, plus a surprise!
Transportation to all field experiences will be provided by LUS. Parent(s)/guardian(s) must provide
daily transportation to the base location at Nora Elementary School, 1000 East 91st Street. All
materials, equipment, and supplies are provided, as well as breakfast and lunch.

Intro to
3D Modeling
For ages 12 and up
3D is everywhere these days, most commonly
in feature films and television. However, new
applications and technology are allowing 3D to also
be “printed”, opening up possibilities of creative
expression, manufacturing and even science and medicine.
This course will introduce the concept of creating 3D
objects using computer applications. Students will receive
instruction on the navigation of 3D space in a computer application,
how to use basic toolsets, how to sculpt and manipulate the virtual meshes,
and ultimately complete their own model that will be printed on a 3D printer.

Child Care Preschool
For ages 3-5
Our preschool summer day camp is an
eight-week program created and designed for
hands-on learning and fun. Led by experienced
preschool teachers, our summer adventures pack
fun into learning as children explore the environment.
The camp offers indoor and outdoor activities, plus
opportunities for fun, friendships, and exploration. Our program
will include mixed age groupings of 3-5 year olds to teach children social
skills, encourage their growing ability to make choices, work with others, and
assume responsibilities. Our teachers work as a team to develop a fun curriculum
that takes advantage of all that the summer offers. They use playgrounds, helping
children to discover science, explore nature, and engage in the creative arts, while
learning about the vast opportunities in the world around them.
