Ken Bingham joins by profession of faith. He was invited
by ABC member, Charlie Meeks and began worshiping with us
this spring. He was a business partner with Charlie’s brother,
Stan Meeks (who passed away in October 2015). Ken is from
Kankakee, Illinois. He served our country in the U.S. Air Force,
and moved to Austin n 1980. Je served in the Austin Fire Department for 32 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. He
lives in Point Venture with his oldest son, Kris Bingham,
who also joins by profession of faith. Kris served two tours of
duty as a U.S. Air Force pilot in Iraq. Two other sons, Ryan and
Travis, live in Austin. This father and son joined our church
Joe and Barbara Miles joined in the Traditional Service on April 17.
They transfer
their membership from Hyde Park Baptist Church. Joe and Barbara live in Buckner
Villas and began worshiping with us in March. Both of them grew up in Austin and have
known each other since they were 5 years old!
Their families were good friends and members of Congress Avenue. They attended the
same schools growing up. Joe had attended Baylor for two years when he was called up
to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Drill Instructor during the Korean Conflict. He
returned to complete his degree in Physical/Education Health at Baylor and enjoyed his
career as Basketball Coach and Health Instructor at Crockett High School in Austin.
Barbara earned her degree in Business Administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. They began dating
when Joe was in the Marines and she was a Senior in college. They married in 1952 and raised their three children in
Austin.
Later, Barbara was the Secretary for the Pastor at Congress Avenue for 10 years; for the next 17 years, she was the Administrative Assistant for the Director of the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport. Joe led music for several churches in
Austin (his father had served as music director in their home church, Congress Avenue). Barbara taught Sunday School
for 50 years. Currently, they assist the Chaplain with worship services at Buckner Villas.
Joe and Barbara have eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren (and one on the way)!
Clifteen Samuelson
completes six years on the staff of
ABC on May 1, 2016.
In her position as Staff
Coordinator, she assists with
weddings, funerals, banquets, and
receptions.
She and husband Phil are Charter Members of
ABC and coordinate the team that provides our
wonderful meals on Wednesday nights.
Barbara Hunley, a charter member of ABC
joined the support staff on November 14, 2013.
Barbara is deeply involved in our church in many
ways. She serves in our prayer ministry, in the
Sanctuary Choir, and as piano and organist accompanist, and attends the Lamplighter Bible
Fellowship Group. Barbara has also served as a member of the
Trustee Committee. She submitted her resignation as office Administrative Assistant, effective April 29, 2016. Barbara and I
have been friends and coworkers at Hyde Park Baptist Church
and at Austin Baptist Church. We are thankful for her loyal service to our church from its
earliest days, and look forward to fellowship
and ministry together in the years to come.

The Sunday after class monthly luncheons serve to make us better Christians. Not only do they help
in establishing closer friendships among us, but our activities will be noticed by others who might be
interested in the Austin Baptist Church. If not missionaries are we apostles?

An evening with Zack & Jana Dawes
Aka, the Fun Bunch!
As Zack and Jana continue having our class members come together for dessert and
coffee, we have the opportunity of getting to know one another and we’re finding
the world is a smaller place. Thursday, this week, was such an evening and we found
several of those in attendance were familiar with folks we knew as well.

Nicholus S. Huntzis
September 4, 1937
~
March 7, 2016
Nicholus S. Huntzis, "Nicky," loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away Monday
morning March 7, 2016 in Austin, Texas at the age of 78. A true Austinite, born and raised in Austin, Texas, Nicholus was born on September 4, 1937 to Marty Huntzis and Ethel Jones. Nick was raised on East 1st St. close to
Govalle. In his younger years, Nick attended Palm Elementary School, Allen Jr. High, and Stephen F. Austin High
School. He played football for both Allen Jr. High and Austin High Schools.
In 1957 Nick met Connie Jacobson while attending The University of Texas at Austin and Connie was in high school.
After four years of dating they were married in 1961. Nick worked two jobs for 40 plus years, which includes The
University of Texas at Austin, Texas Instruments, and the Texas Association of Sports Officials.
Nick is survived by his wife Connie, two daughters Audrey Templeton and husband Charles; Stephanie Achebe and
husband Cyprian, four grandchildren Courtney, Hannah, Mikah and Nathaniel.
Nick was a humble man who loved Jesus Christ his Lord, his wife, children, and friends. As an ordained minister and
deacon, he was very involved in his church, he was ever willing to help, give of his time, and teach God's Word.
A short preface to the following story, Connie was gracious enough to send me the story of how she and Nick met. At a time
when a spouse is grieving over the loss of their sweetheart, this is a sweet story with a bit of humor...Kay Newman
Down memory lane:
In 1957, on a balmy Sunday evening, Nicholus had attended a youth fellowship at Hillcrest Baptist Church. As he and a friend (Bill Lively) were leaving, they noticed one of
the girls from the fellowship, Connie Jacobson “standing on the street corner” underneath the church lighted sign. They stopped to see if she needed a ride. Connie said
she thought her parents were supposed to come pick her up but Connie forgot she was
supposed to call them so they would know the fellowship was over. This was the first
time Nick and Connie met. The boys gave her a ride home. Over the next year Nick
dated Connie's friend Bonnie. Soon Bonnie had to move to California, but she asked
Connie to “take care” of her boyfriend. (heehee) As you might guess, Nick did call Connie and asked her
out. Unfortunately, Nick had “Bonnie on the brain” and talked of her often. As you might guess, Connie
was getting “a little fed up” with this and said if he didn't stop they would need to stop dating. Well Nick
thought this over and came up with a plan. The next Friday, Nick picked her up and drove to Pease Park.
Connie was curious about why and Nick told her he brought the letters from Bonnie to “burn” in a bar-bque pit. It was then their courtship really began and on Christmas Eve, 1960, Nick proposed on a walk
bridge over looking a creek in Eastwoods Park. She said yes and they were married in September 1961,
at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
During the following 54 years of marriage, they had 2 daughters, Audrey and Stephanie. Nick and Connie
worked supporting their family. During those years, Nick worked two jobs for 40 plus years, which included The University of Texas at Austin, Texas Instruments, and the Texas Association of Sports Officials
and driving cars for Enterprise Rent Cars. Nick loved his Lord, work, his church and his family. The next
years would bring them 5 grandchildren and eventually 2 great-grandchildren.
In 2016, after many years of suffering from a blood clot, diabetes, and the many things that diabetes
harm in a persons body, Nick left this world and went to be with his lord and savior. —Connie Huntzis
