Your Colorado Region SCCA is hosting a High Plains Raceway fundraising
and informational event Sunday, September 23 at May Farms Event Center in
Byers, Colorado.
We are offering guided track site tours and dinner, as well as presentations by the
lead track designer and CAMA representatives. This is YOUR OPPORTUNITY to
ask any questions you may have of the persons actually responsible for making our
new track a reality.
Dinner is FREE to the first 100 RSVP’s! May Farms is catering and your choice of
ribeye or chicken will be grilled to order. A vegetarian entrée is also available. The
meal will include salad, baked potato, corn, green beans, & dinner rolls. A cash bar
will be open with beer, wine, and spirits. We’ll follow up the meal with dessert and
coffee.

Track design, zoning, and financial presentations will follow dinner. After the
presentations and Q & A, your Colorado Region SCCA will auction several FREE
test & tune days at HPR, as well as FREE driver entries for full National and/or
Regional Inaugural Race weekends. The entire amount from the auctions and all
donations (not just “proceeds”) will go directly to the High Plains Raceway capital
fund.

Due to parking constraints at the site we must limit numbers and carpool from May
Farms to the track site. The first members to RSVP will be assigned to the 3:15
group until that group is full. Members assigned to the 2:00 group will have
approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to wait after returning to May Farms before
dinner is served and can relax in the bar or tour the grounds.

RED HAT SOCIETY
It has been too long since a “Red Hat” article so, hats away! So much good stuff has been going on it’s hard to know where to start.
Start/Finish sounds like a good place! Speaking of Start/Finish have you heard the latest on High Plains Raceway? There is an
Informational meeting with a dinner and Fundraising Auction going to be held on the 23rd of September at the May Farms event center
in Byers. There will be track tours before the eat-greet-and meet. Dinner is at 5:30 and is free to the first 100 reservations made! You
get a choice of beef, chicken or vegetarian entrée with salad, veggie, coffee and dessert. There will be an auction of some way cool
things like test days and entry fees and such. The bar will be a CASH bar (hey, you get to eat for free if you are one of the first 100
reservations!). You will have to ante up $50 bucks if you don’t reserve up early so call 303-403-2670 or email [email protected] to
get your reservation in and your entrée known. If you haven’t seen the new track in person you gotta come out for this! Track maps do
not do this place justice. It is going to be awesome! Prepare to have money asked for as well. After all, it’s a FUNDRAISER. Speaking
of fundraising, are you aware that Colorado Region SCCA has the most members of the 5 marquee clubs that are buying HPR but we
rank THIRD in raising money! Even the guys that only have two wheels have raised more money than we have! That ladies and
gentlemen is pretty sad. Here we sit moaning and groaning because we have to go so far to a race that’s considered “home” for us,
La Junta, and we can’t get enough people to pony up enough money to kick this capital campaign in the a#*. What’s up? If the deal
falls through, you get your money back. Is that what’s holding some of you up? Well, money is tight. So tell me something I don’t
know. You don’t have to give it all at once. $10 bucks here, $20 there, it adds up in your name. For those of you with the deeper
pockets, yes we are looking to you to help us out even more. If this Region is going to survive, it needs a track close to home that we
can book several events a season on, like we became accustomed to at good ole’ Second Creek ‘cause frankly people, that’s how we
paid the bills around here. Sitting on your hind end waiting for someone else to do the work for you wont get you a track and gives you
no room to criticize those that are busting their butts to make it happen for you. I’ll get off the soapbox now.
Colorado Region will have entered into a bold new frontier by the time this come out. The first ever intradivision Double regional
with Nebraska Region will have just been completed at Hastings Motorsports Park. This will be the first SCCA sanctioned event at the
track and everyone is pretty jazzed about it. Hopefully enough workers from our side of the fence will make over for the Nebraska
hospitality and the steak dinner Saturday night! Mark Zarlengo and Candy Gerber have worked their collective tails off to make this a
successful event so I hope to report aces next time!
Tidbits for all: Colorado Region will host its first Street Survival on October 20th at Coors Field. CDR had theirs earlier this year and
it was a huge success. Brent Louzon won the ITB fest at Mid-Ohio, way to go Brent! Topeka is improved and faster than last year per
those who drove it this last month. Nice report for those drivers headed there in October for Runoffs. Speaking of Runoffs, did you see
our own Mark Mercer was picked for S2000 winner again? Bob Neumeister was also picked for Formula V. Go get ‘em Nuby! Chris
Sarian hit the wall at Trois Riviers (he’s ok). We had an honored guest at the last membership meeting, Harvey Woodard, former Area
6 director. Harvey now lives out here and he and Grayson could talk
about a lot of the same things they had so much history in common!
It is with real deep sadness that I tell those of you who did not know,
of the passing of one of our classiest drivers, Bob Tankersley. Tank,
as he was fond of being called passed on August 12, 2007 from
leukemia. Tank was always the gentleman, always with a hug and
smile for those he knew, a wonderful sense of humor. He received
many moving accolades, none more so than the one from Kirk
Stevens. Kirk had known Tank since childhood and his remarks
were very much from the heart. I last saw Tank race at PPIR and, it
turns out, that was the last race he ran. He now runs in the bigger
field upstairs where they all get the checker every time (regardless
of what tricks Hunter has up his sleeve)!

RE’S REPORT

High Plains Raceway continues to get closer to reality. With every contribution CAMA receives from its member groups (and even
from non-affiliates), HPR gets closer to becoming Colorado’s newest Road Racing Circuit. Over $235,000.00 has been raised thus far
from Founding Contributors since the Capital Campaign began in July. When added to the nest egg from the successful operation of
the now closed Second Creek Raceway, the total monies raised are over 1.1 million dollars. Verbal commitments have already been
made on approximately half of the 1.4 million dollars in loans that the HPR business plan includes. (CAMA can’t accept these funds
until the loan program is properly structured under Securities Exchange Commission regulations; this process is under way and
nearing completion.)
The land is under contract, the zoning definition was changed to include amateur motor sports as an approved use. This zoning
was then approved unanimously by the Arapahoe County Commissioners. The Use by Special Review (USR) has been submitted.
CAMA will close on the land, with cash on hand, as soon as the USR is approved.
Construction can begin immediately after closing, if and only if, there are enough funds already raised to complete a usable racing
facility. It is imperative that we give now to avoid delays.
What level should you give? Here are some questions to ask yourself. What is having an exciting, undulating, 2.5 mile road course
as nice as any in the country within an hour of Denver worth? What do you spend on a race season? What do you spend on a race
weekend? What do a set of tires cost? How much will you save over the next one, three, or five years by not taking those loooong
road trips? You know the ones at $3.00 per gallon in that 7 mile per gallon tow rig or motorhome?
Now is the time to write that check. CAMA takes credit cards too! You can buy a brick with your name (or anything else) on it for
$1,000. Got a lot to say? Bigger bricks are available for $5,000. Colorado Region SCCA, the largest club in the CAMA group is
currently running third in donation dollars. As of August 24th, only 42 out of over 1000 Colorado Region members have contributed. If
you’re skeptical, waiting, or you have any questions or doubts, you owe it to yourself and the club to come to the information meeting,
auction, and track tour fundraiser we have planned.
Did I mention there is a money back guaranty? If there aren’t sufficient funds to build a usable facility by December 31, 2008, all
contributions will be returned to their contributors.
You will be receiving a call from me or another member in the coming weeks to talk about HPR and answer any questions you may
have. We will also be passing on details about the big gala fundraising and informational meeting, dinner, and auction at May Farms
Event Center in Byers on September 23rd. See the ad and article elsewhere in this REDLINE for further details.
CAMA has just about finished their job; locating suitable land close to Denver, putting it under contract, obtaining necessary zoning
and permits, and designing a facility and circuit we can all be proud of. NOW it is OUR turn. Please use the Capital Campaign mailer
and contribution form you should have received in July to send in your contribution. If you didn’t receive it you can go to

BOARD BIOGRAPHY AND INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY
THE CANDIDATES
Joe Gilmore
Education: J.D. University of Denver Law, B.S. Colorado School of Mines, commercial pilot, flight instructor, aircraft mechanic.
SCCA Licenses: National Competition, Steward-In-Training.
I came to SCCA via the local chapter of the BMW Club, where I started participating in high performance driving schools and
autocross in 2000.Fortunately for me, some of my instructors who were in SCCA asked me to consider racing. Since joining in 2003 I
have raced, crashed, rebuilt, changed classes, worked corners and other specialties, met a huge group of new friends that share my
passion, and had a great time doing all of it.
With a fabulous new track here in Colorado Region just around the corner we have the opportunity to start fresh in many ways. The
last couple of difficult years have put limits on what our region has been able to accomplish. I want to step up and assist the other
members of the board in moving forward to increase the value that we provide and reduce the burdens for ALL members of SCCA.
Racing is expensive in both time and money. I believe that we absolutely must provide the best and most enjoyable experience for all;
there are other organizations waiting to snatch our people if we don't.
Working the specialties as part of my steward training I have noticed the divide that exists between drivers and workers because of
the constraints placed upon each during a race day. I want to find ways to bridge this gap and make everyone at an SCCA event feel
that they are in a friendly, helpful atmosphere.
Having come from a driving instruction program very similar to PDX, I endorse it wholeheartedly and will work to continue and
improve both it and Time Trials as great ways to encourage others to join the fun. Solo and Rallycross as well must be supported as
important activities in our region. I will also look for ways to raise the profile of SCCA in our communities because there are many
people out there who would join us if they only knew that they could.
Many of you recently received the green flag from me on the starter stand at Miller and La Junta. Please give me the green flag
now so that I can start working for YOU on the board.
Chris Sarian
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the Colorado Region SCCA BOD over the past three years.
Working together, the BOD has continued to make sure that amateur road racing in the Colorado Region continues; and I was
happy to be part of the process.
Some of my other accomplishments were instituting the prize drawings at the general membership meetings and coordinating the
annual Division convention and awards banquet for the 2005 race season.
One of my main goals during my term was to see a new track become available in our region. Although the pavement is not on the
ground yet, High Plains Raceway is destined to become a reality. My work on the CAMA Capital Campaigns just beginning as we
have just launched the fund raiser…more info at http://www.highplainsraceway.com.
Moving forward, having our new track will create huge opportunities for increased membership and race participation at every level
in our region; due to the proximity to the Denver area. Seeing the new track come to fruition and being involved in increasing our
membership will be two of the main areas of focus for me during my second term.
There is still more work to be done and I am looking for your vote for a second term.
Tom Hunsinger
SCCA Qualifications: Member for three years; Solo Chair for the Colorado Region since October 2006; former president of The
Ohio State University Sports Car Club (35 years ago); participant in Solo and rally (TSD and European) events.
Occupation (how I finance my car activities): IT Administrator and Site Manager (actually my wife pays the bills)
Why I am running for the Board: I was encouraged to run for a position on the Board by other members of the Region both in the
Solo community and outside of it. I don’t think I bring anything special to the position. I work hard at whatever I do, generally I am
organized (less so when rushed), and I always listen. I don’t really have an agenda of things I’d like to see done so I don’t really have
a platform. I do fully support and encourage the reunification of the various disciplines (Solo, racing, TT and Rallycross) in the Region.
The more we work we can do together, and pool our resources, the stronger we will be. I would eventually like to see that each
discipline is represented on the Board, elected by the membership of each discipline. I would like to thank Karl, the current Board and
the membership for supporting the progress in the reunification effort. I would like to help continue this effort and work to bring more
involvement of the Solo people into the Region. Since I come from outside of the Region I hope I can look at old problems that we
have to face and possibly help come up with new solutions. Thank you for your consideration.

The August Membership meeting was held on the 21st of
August at Breckenridge Brewery and we were greeted by a long
missing friendly face belonging to Sarah Kokkeler. Seems she
has been doing duty in Wyoming setting up a new Breck and
just got paroled home. Welcome back Sarah!
New faces tonight belonged to David Walker, Winston Black
(up from the Springs no less), John Honnold, Ed Schuler (new
member this time!) and Harvey Woodard former Area 6 Director.
Jeff Winter introduced Harvey and he and Grayson were about
the only ones who could talk about the same times and remember them!
Karl discussed the HPF capital campaign. It broke the
$200,000 mark, which is good. SCCA is in 3rd/4th for fundraising
which, in a word, stinks! What’s up people! This track will not
build itself. Example: RMVR has received donations from approximately 65 of their 408 members totaling $94,000. SCCA
has received donations from approximately 40 of their 1100
members totaling $29,000. Even the MRA guys have given
more than we have. This is embarrassing! There is a dinner
meet and greet with auction on the 23rd of September scheduled. Everyone should have received a postcard about this by
now. Send in your RSVP so you can eat for FREE. Choice of
entrée with RSVP i.e. steak, chicken or vegetarian. Cash bar,
track tours. Bring money!
Conventionpalooza as Karl is calling it. Looking at the Sheraton at 6th and Simms in January as dates in December pretty
much booked because of Christmas and November has
Thanksgiving, still a race end of October, you get the picture.
RMD has been notified of the inability to hold convention till
January so look them for notice of annual meeting. Trying to
have Solo convention at same time so awards can be done in
one place one time with big after-party. Tom Hunsinger likes the
idea so will take it forward to Solo community.
Cliff Young commented in general about the subject matter
on the message board. Karl took responsibility for the lack of a
worker incentive program for 2007, vowed to have something in
place for 2008 with help from Cliff and Gray and Nancy Foster.
SoapBox Derby is scheduled for June 1 2008!
Prize time! Things got a little contentious right off the bat because a LOT of people coveted one of the prizes. It was a garage/counter/bar stool that swiveled and had flames on it! Too
cool for words, and most peoples houses. I put dibs on it as
soon as I saw it, so did Karl, so did Sean, so did half the house.
Kevin Ellis nabbed an impact wrench. George Fairer snagged
some jack stands. Carol Ott got a battery charger for Dave.
Chris Doyle got a screw extraction tool. Gray Brumfield got a set
of tie-downs. Teri Massey grabbed a set of pliers. Howie Wilson
caught a set of step drills. Oh, the stool, yours truly got it. I am
willing to make a deal however. If a mate to this stool shows up
at the next meeting, its auction time baby with the money going
to the new track! Yes, I will haul it with me to the meeting!

In spite of threatening weather, the September 1st night
RallyCross went off without a hitch. With one more event on the
Colorado calendar, September 30th at Fountain, the points race
has some interesting battles. Chad Ones, competitor and event
chairman, writes:
"The race for the season championship is close and will be
determined at the next event. Classes that will be determined
next event in Fountain are as follows:
Rally Prepared Front: Jack Penley has 1st place wrapped up,
but right behind him is Chad Jennings and Jared Hindman tied
for second with 98 points, and Kyle Webber is in great standing
holding 4th with 96 points. Who will place 2nd, 3rd, and 4th?
Stay tuned.
Rally Modified 2: Jerry Smith and Cole Ones are tied for
second with 110 points a piece. Whoever finishes in front after
the next event will clinch 2nd place in RM2
Rally Modified 4: What a race this will be! Eric Ganack and
Ken Cashion have been trading podium spots all year with one
setting fast time on the morning course, and the other taking fast
time in the afternoon race after race. Both are tied for first place
in RM4 with 126 points. Who will be crowned champion of RM4
in 2007? Time will tell. Also, another heated battle royal is for
3rd place currently held by both Max Johnson, and Todd Hart,
each carrying 82 points. Subaru will prevail, but what model?
Todd's STi, or Max's "22b"?
Remember kids, rubber meets dirt in the showdown of skill
and car control, September 30th in Fountain. BE THERE!"
Following our final event, many of us will be heading to the
National Championship finale in Hastings, Nebraska. This threeday event in late October will combine results from national
events held around the country to determine overall
championships in each of the classes. Wish us luck.

OPEN LETTER
Thank you to the membership,
I would like to say thank you to the members of the Colorado
Region for giving me the opportunity to represent you as a
Board Member and RE over the last nine years. It has been
quite a ride and I must say a valuable learning experience for
me. It’s a ride that every member should experience at some
point in their SCCA life. It’s a guarantee that you will learn
patience. As in all endeavors, how much you invested is how
much you will take away from it.
After careful consideration, I have made the decision to not
throw my name into the proverbial hat this time around. We
have three great candidates who are enthusiastic and have
shown their willingness to be a positive asset to the Colorado
Region. Two have been coming to the BoD meetings for quite
some time now and the third is a present BoD member. All three
have shown me they are ready and willing to take on the
responsibility of leading our region to a brighter future.
There were a few things that I was not able to accomplish.
However, I have confidence that the present BoD members
along with the newly elected members will follow through and
accomplish a great deal more. The present Board of Directors
has been an absolute joy to work with. Karl has been an
absolute inspiration as RE and we should all thank him for his
foresight and willingness to face the difficult issues head-on.
The work that is accomplished by the BoD goes mostly
unseen by the majority of the membership. The satisfaction one
receives comes from knowing that the time and energy you put
in now is for the good of the membership and that it will come
back to you ten-fold.
The new track has been a long time coming and a lot of
people have put there heart and soul into this venture. I have
been involved in the process for the last five years and it is
something I hold very close to my heart. Now that it is so close
to fruition I feel that I will no longer be a part of it. That’s a hard
thing for me to comprehend. Being involved in something for so
long that has meant so much to you, it’s a hard thing to let go of.
I know the people involved will take great care in seeing this
track through to completion. They are a dedicated group of
individuals who have invested a great amount of time in
securing our future as a region as well as the entire motorsports
community of Colorado.
I challenge all of our members to participate in our regions
future. By donating your dollars you will assure that the
Colorado Region and the motorsports community of Colorado
will continue to thrive for decades to come.
In closing I want to say thank you to all the friends and
enemies I have encountered through my tenure on the Colorado
Region Board of Directors. I know that I have been perceived at
times as someone who has a “chip” on his shoulder. I don’t mind
that perception if that is what it takes to secure what is best for
our members. If at times the decisions made do not please
everyone…so be it, I didn’t sign on to be popular. I signed on to
do my best to make a difference and change practices that I
saw has detrimental to the Colorado Region. My hope is that the
changes I was able to effect will continue to benefit our
membership.
Thank you for the support you provided me during my time at
the wheel.

STREET SURVIVAL
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20
It is not very often that we can indulge our passion for cars
and at the same do something that will make a difference in
someone’s life, perhaps even save their life. On October 20th the
Colorado Region will host the Street Survival program at Coors
Field Parking lot. The Street Survival program teaches teen
drivers how to control their cars in difficult, challenging and
emergency situations. The BMW CCA Foundation started the
Street Survival Program back in 2002. Each year the program
has grown and this year the goal is for 50 events. This is the first
year that the SCCA has joined in the program and is holding at
least three events, including the Coors Field event.
The students will drive their street cars through exercises
designed to allow the student to see what happens when the car
exceeds the limits of traction. They will not learn how to drive
fast. Instead, they will learn where the limits of their vehicle lie
and what to do when they exceed those limits. For details on the

For the event to be most effective for the students we need a
1 to 1 student/instructor ratio. That means we need up to 40
instructors and 20 workers to keep the event moving. Please
check your calendars and see if you will be able to help out as
an instructor or as a worker. I have worked three of these events
and the feeling you get knowing that you have helped give a
teenager valuable experience that may save their life is
awesome. As you can see, it takes a lot of people to put this all
together and we will really need your help. Please e-mail me at

event. Instructors will get polo shirts and workers will get t-shirts
to wear at the event. It is never too late to save a life.
