Report to Donors 2010 Thank You Strong communities build strong hospitals MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION CHAIR AND PRESIDENT accountability As one of the donors who supports The Scarborough Hospital, we are pleased to share with you our 2010 Report to Donors. It has been a very good year and we are grateful for the critical role that you played in helping us to achieve our goals to support the best healthcare for our global community in Scarborough. Some of the highlights for the year include: • Granted $2.7 million to the hospital for the purchase of new equipment, staff education and capital projects, such as our new emergency and critical care building • Increased revenue by 25% • Decreased expenses by 15% • Increased staff and physician gifts by 200% (since 2008) • Recruited four new business leaders to sit on the Foundation’s volunteer Board of Directors • Secured the largest gift in the hospital’s history: an anonymous pledge of $3.1 million that will be paid over the next five years •A warded the Imagine Canada Ethical Code for operating a responsible, transparent and accountable charity following best practice, Canada Revenue Agency regulations and good governance • Increased our total donors by 20% • Increased the average gift by 100% • Supported, mobilized and connected with our many communities to raise funds and support our hospital through walks, raffles, tournaments and other fundraising events As we continue to reach out to our current donors, seek new supporters, build relationships with local businesses and renew connections with past contacts, please know that we do so with the highest of ethics and with the support of The Scarborough Hospital Board of Directors, management, physicians and staff. Together, we can ensure that The Scarborough Hospital provides the best care that our community needs, close to home. We accept your support with sincere gratitude. Over the next ten years, The Scarborough Hospital will undergo an unprecedented period of growth and redevelopment which will focus on the purchase of new equipment such as an MRI for the Birchmount campus, and a new Diagnostic Imaging concourse and surgical pavilion at the General campus. It is an exciting time. Strong communities do build strong hospitals, and we will accomplish all of our community and hospital goals with your ongoing support. Thank you for making a difference. Paul TorrieMichael Mazza, cfre Chairman of the BoardPresident & CEO The Scarborough Hospital Foundation The Scarborough Hospital Foundation 2 THE SCARBOROUGH HOSPITAL FOUNDATION REPORT TO DONORS 2010 Celebrating Success Stories NEW MRI FOR BIRCHMOUNT: MPP Gerry Phillips said it best when he announced a second MRI for The Scarborough Hospital: “This isn’t a gift. You’ve earned it.” The campaign to raise the funds to purchase the MRI is in the initial stages. Watch for more news. PATIENT SATISFACTION ON ITS WAY UP: Throughout TSH, staff and physicians are launching initiatives designed specifically to improve patient satisfaction, and their work is paying off. The most recent survey results show four units have patient satisfaction rates above the GTA average: CP3 (Orthopedics) and 4Central Surgery at the General campus and Cardiac Stepdown and 4A (Surgery) at the Birchmount campus. BALANCED BUDGET: It’s a lot more complex than our budgets at home, but the principles are the same—the money coming in has to cover the costs going out. Through a consistent program of fiscal responsibility and hard work at the unit level, TSH has maintained a balanced budget for the past three years, putting us in a strong position when seeking additional investments to improve patient care. The hospital’s Clinical Action Plan began last summer with a total of 32 recommendations covering just about every healthcare area in the hospital. Eleven were shortlisted and presented to a Consensus Summit that drew more than 200 hospital and community stakeholders. Nine of those advanced to the business case stage and, from there, the Steering Committee made a unanimous recommendation to focus on Cancer and Chronic Disease Management as our two major strategic projects over the next three to five years. THE SCARBOROUGH HOSPITAL FOUNDATION REPORT TO DONORS 2010 NEW DI SYSTEM A WORLD FIRST: We may not be a big downtown hospital, but that doesn’t stop us from being on the leading edge. An investment in new digital technology made TSH the first in the world to run two key diagnostic imaging systems on an integrated platform—a major benefit for cardiac patients who can now get faster, more accurate diagnoses and treatment. PLANNING FOR SURGICAL EXPANSION: TSH keeps getting better. While celebrating the completion of the West Wing at the General campus, local MPP Brad Duguid delivered more good news: a $3 million planning grant for the redevelopment of the General’s outdated surgical suites and expanded pre-surgical services. PAEDLINK: An innovative approach to ‘fast track’ children and their families from the Emergency Department to a pediatric clinic— called Paedlink— has reduced wait times. More importantly, Paedlink has alleviated much of the fear and anxiety experienced by children and, of course, their parents, in visiting the hospital. 3 Your Gifts at Work We’re appreciative of the culture of giving to The Scarborough Hospital, which supports the General and Birchmount campuses and six satellite sites. Regardless of the amount, our hospital benefits from your gifts, every day, all year long. With your help, life-saving equipment was purchased in 2010. If you would like information about the equipment and how it helps save lives, please contact the Foundation office at 416.431.8130 or email [email protected]. There are many ways to give, tailored to meet your needs, and you can take comfort in knowing that your donations help two hospital campuses, six satellite sites, dozens of departments, thousands of physicians and staff and over 600,000 Scarborough residents. For more information on these donation options, please visit www.tsh.to. • Equip to Care program Try our new online fundraising. It’s simple, fun and will have an incredible impact on healthcare in our community. Choose a piece of needed medical equipment from our list and ask your friends and family to help you purchase that item. Birchmount campus Cardio Respiratory & Critical Care: • 3 Ventilators $190,238 Diagnostic Imaging: • 1 CT Scanner $1,300,000 Laboratory: • 1 DXH Blood Cell Analyzer $112,524 Maternal Newborn & Child: • 7 Phototherapy Lights $53,568 • 4 Incubators $108,325 Mental Health: • 4 Beds $13,867 Medicine: • 20 Beds $129,321 • 2 Vernacare Disposal Units $22,792 Surgery: • 1 Cysto Fluoro Table $645,840 • 1 Laparoscopy Tower $99,488 • Tribute Giving Ask your friends to honour your marriage, birthday, anniversary or other special occasion by donating to The Scarborough Hospital. Set up your own personalized page online where your friends and family can celebrate your special day with a donation. • Grateful Patient Program Would you like to thank your doctor? Do you want to honour a special nurse for the care you received? The best way to say thank you for your excellent care is with a donation. • In Memory Memorial gifts are often made in lieu of flowers when a loved one has passed away. All memorial gifts are recognized in a tasteful and appropriate manner according to the level of the gift and the request of the donor and/or their family. • In Celebration We all have people in our lives whom we especially cherish: mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, children and special friends. The Scarborough Hospital Foundation provides an opportunity to recognize these remarkable people with a donation, a thoughtful expression of caring that creates a lasting remembrance. • Bequests (Wills) Planning a legacy and the distribution of your wealth can be a difficult yet rewarding experience. It ensures that the people and charities you care about will be taken care of. A bequest in your will is one of the easiest gifts you can make and can result in lower estate taxes for you and your heirs. • Gifts of Securities Planning the distribution of your assets makes good business sense, in addition to being a gratifying experience. You can donate stock through your bank or investment broker. Capital gains taxes are eliminated. • Gifts of Life Insurance Life insurance represents an excellent way to create a significant future gift, while decreasing your personal tax payable both now, and at the time of your death. Individuals that own ‘paid up’ policies can contribute them to The Scarborough Hospital Foundation and will receive a tax credit for the ‘cash surrender’ value of the policy. Individuals can also name the Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of a new policy, and can claim the premium payments as charitable donations. • Gifts of RRSP and RIF s s Individuals who do not plan to leave their RRSPs and/or RIFs to either a surviving spouse or dependent children may leave these assets to The Scarborough Hospital Foundation in order to avoid a significant tax bill at the time of death. • Employee and Corporate Matching If you are a current employee, retired, the spouse or widow(er) of an employee, or a member of the Board of Directors of a company that has a Matching Gift Program, you may be able to double or triple your gift to TSH. Simply contact your Human Resources department to find out if you have a Matching Gift Program or provide us with your company name and we will check if your employer has one. THE SCARBOROUGH HOSPITAL FOUNDATION REPORT TO DONORS 2010 5 outstanding MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE: For CIBC, a healthy community is important, so investing in health is one of the ways they make a difference for what really matters. This Canadian institution has helped create awareness about the importance of early breast cancer detection, so it is fitting that The Scarborough Hospital’s new breast screening equipment be housed in a clinic named after them. Slated to open in the General campus’s new Diagnostic Imaging Concourse, it will include state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment. CIBC’s $1,000,000 pledge to the West Wing was the largest corporate gift received by the hospital for that critical project. Photographed in our current clinic are Kathleen Woodard, VicePresident, CIBC Retail Distribution, GTA East and North, and Michael O’Leary, Foundation board member and former Executive Vice President of CIBC and Managing Director of CIBC World Markets. LEADERSHIP GIVING The Scarborough Hospital has been the beneficiary of tremendous support from our caring corporate and community partners and individuals whose social responsibility is the cornerstone for all our major campaigns. Their gifts allow for new buildings and equipment so that our hospital team can save lives, every day. With each new redevelopment, the Foundation relies on organizations to renew their investment in excellent healthcare at The Scarborough Hospital. The following leaders have The Estate of Constance Entwistle made gifts of $100,000 and The Estate of Edna Margaret Fisher more since 1985: Freedom 55 Financial, AGS Automotive Systems AMD a division of London Life ATN - Asian Television Network Insurance Company The Estate of Ingeborg Hamelink International Limited Aviva Canada Inc. These donations, which were made by Beatrice Ip, her family and friends, enabled the hospital to purchase four low air mattresses used during the treatment of advanced pressure ulcers, burns or intractable pain. Low air mattresses help treat and prevent pressure ulcers which may form when the body is repositioned to distribute weight evenly. The mattresses alternate pressure to manage and prevent bedsores. Their built-in low air loss system helps keep patients dry, preventing skin breakdown. 9 Iu Tai Ho Pauline Ireland Yao-Tung Juan Ivanhoe Knight Yik Cheung Kwok Delores Lawrence Mary Ho Iris Consulting for Seniors Ann Judge Dr. Jevan Ko* Sotirios Kyriakopoulos Nathalie Le Rita Wai Ha Ho Satoru Tom Iwamoto Kathy Kalusek Ruth Wong Ko Daniel Lai Caroline LeBlanc Roger H. Our Board bylaws, which hardwire community engagement, are a model for other hospitals. Our Board members are skillsbased, bringing invaluable governance experience to their role. And our commitment to the hospital’s Mission, Vision and Values is transforming the way we care for our patients. The anonymous donation supports the purchase of several pieces of urgently needed medical equipment. A portion of the generous gift completes the effort to raise enough money for two CT Scanners—one for each campus—valued at $1.3 million each. The donation was made by a family whose members have been patients at the hospital over several years. 15 Vincent Lyew Joan E. McMaster Eric C. We have racked up accomplishments and achievements that would have been unthinkable 24 months ago. We’ve kept growing and building and moving the organization forward, all while providing the excellent patient care that is our core business. Yet our journey is far from over. Striving for excellence is now a part of our culture, and we will continue to improve as a hospital. I am proud to be the CEO of this hospital, and I would like to thank every physician, staff, allied healthcare worker and volunteer for their commitment in making TSH a healthcare leader strongly focused on providing excellent patient- and family-driven care for our diverse community. Physician gives back with Equip to Care donation: After practicing for more than 40 years at The Scarborough Hospital, Ears, Nose and Throat Specialist Dr. David Naiberg is once again giving back to the organization through a significant donation to the Foundation’s Equip to Care fundraising campaign. “I started my medical career here when it was known as Scarborough General Hospital,” says Dr. Naiberg, who has supported The Scarborough Hospital Foundation throughout the decades. “I’ve had a wonderful and rewarding career. I feel strongly about being a part of this hospital; a real kinship.” 19 LEGACY GIVING experience Leaving a gift in a will is an investment in the future of our community. Legacy giving provides a wonderful opportunity for you to make a significant donation that may not be possible during your lifetime. 20 DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS: When Eric and Betty Tipping bought their Scarborough-area house in 1951, there was no hospital at the corner of McCowan and Lawrence. After the war, Eric worked as a plumber, making every penny count. Both remember the days when the hospital handed you a bill after every visit. After Ontario adopted universal healthcare in the sixties, the couple made donations to the hospital since they were so used to paying for tests, operations and overnight stays. Now in their nineties, the Tippings have set up a Donor-Advised Fund to support the purchase of medical equipment at The Scarborough Hospital. Donor-Advised Funds are a great way to give now and leave a legacy for future generations. Since the 1950s, The Scarborough Hospital has been the grateful recipient of gifts through wills from local residents, patients, volunteers, employees and physicians. We hope we can count on our current supporters and members of the community to keep this tradition alive by remembering The Scarborough Hospital when writing, or changing, their will. In 2010, estate gifts were Sidney Kerr Burton received from these generous Clifford David Ellis individuals. We are grateful Nusrat Khan for their legacy gifts to ensure Jessie Marguerite Leckie The Scarborough Hospital Anton Ljubi can continue to serve our Irene Rennye Cristina Pearse community. Barbara Tucker Vasilios Vasiliadis Viola Electra Webster CARING CIRCLE The Caring Circle is a special group of individuals who donate automatically to The Scarborough Hospital, either by credit card or bank withdrawal. Monthly giving is an easy and convenient way to spread donations over an entire year and provides ongoing support to fund vital equipment, special programs, services and capital needs. A monthly gift helps the hospital save lives, every day of the year. Ibrahim Abdel Magid Luz Ambita Mercedes N. Abonado Mildred Anandarajah Suzanne Adamkowski Helen M.
