College Board Recognitions – Class of 2013
Admissions
Six John Paul the Great students have been named Commended students in the
2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, one has been named an Outstanding
Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, and another has been
recognized in the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Each of these seniors
have been honored for superb PSAT scores. The six Commended students are:
Grace Broderick, Megan Evans, David Haas, James Leist, Connor Patrick, and
Drew Walker. These six students scored in the top 3% of the 1.5 million students
who took the PSAT in October 2011. They represent 5% of the seniors at John Paul
the Great! Sinclaire Hamilton has been recognized by the National Achievement
Scholarship Program as
an Outstanding
Participant. The
National Achievement
Program is conducted
by National Merit
Scholarship Corporation
and is an academic
competition established
to honor Black American
high school
students. Sinclaire is
among the top 3% of
160,000 Black
Americans who
requested entry to the
2013 National Achievement Program. In addition, the College Board has recognized
Melina Gonzales as a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. Melina is
one of 5,000 Hispanic/ Latino students selected from a pool of more than 253,000
who took the PSAT/NMSQT in 2011. To be eligible, students must be at least onequarter Hispanic/Latino (based on the programs’ definition) and have achieved a
minimum PSAT/NMSQT score for their region. Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher
are designated as Scholars. Congratulations to all of our high achievers! This is a
proud moment for you, your families, and for John Paul the Great!

Spirit Week and Homecoming are among the most anticipated events of the year,
and 2012 proved to be the best yet. This special week at JP was full of life and
excitement. Senior members of the Servant Leadership Association (SLA) chose
themes for dress-up days throughout the week including Twin Day,
Superhero/Cartoon Day, Class Color Day, and JP Spirit Day. A contest was held on
Superhero/Cartoon Day during lunch to pick the most creative costume, with the
winners being a group dressed as characters from the cartoon classic Scooby Doo.

Spirit week culminated on Friday with a
high-energy pep rally held on the football
field, featuring emcees Marisa Lockhart
(2014) and Ryan Hoskins (2014). The JP
Fall Varsity Teams were introduced, a
faculty scooter race ensued, pumpkins were
tossed and relayed, and cheerleaders
cheered. School spirit was enhanced by
students who served as “hype leaders” who
were decked out in JP colors and helped
excite the crowd.
Celebrations continued on Saturday with the Homecoming football game. During
half-time the Homecoming Court was introduced and given sashes by reigning
Homecoming Queen, Caitie Somerville (2012). Festivities ended with more than
500 students and invited guests
dancing the night away at the
Harvest Moon Dance. The gym
was transformed with a fall theme
which included colored leaves, hay
bales, pumpkins, and a signature
harvest moon. In between sets,
Seniors Sean Stryker and Mary
Kate Eicher were named King
and Queen and presented with
their crown and tiara.
Open House –Biggest and Best Yet!
Thanks to everyone who participated in our fall Open House. The school was
packed as future Wolves prowled the halls meeting JP students, teachers, and

JP5K Run for Options
The Second Annual JP5K Run/Walk for Options was the biggest and best yet! More
than 400 people came out on a chilly, bright, Saturday morning in support of the
Options Program. Many participants are John Paul families, but a number of people
from the broader community also attended. JP senior, Mo O’Neil (2013), won the
race with the best time for the second year in a row. Proceeds from the event go
directly to the innovative and inclusive Options Program, serving students with
cognitive impairments and/or significant learning disabilities who cannot access the
general curriculum. Through this program students grow socially, spiritually, and
academically alongside their peers in a Catholic environment. For more information

Peter Pan – Flying High!
Congratulations to the cast and crew of JP Drama for their elevated performance of
Peter Pan and Wendy! The sold-out three night run (November 2, 3, 4, 2012) on the
John Paul stage was one of the best yet, and marks the first time that flying was

House Update
Spirit Week
John Paul students showed their true school spirit during the month of October in
preparation for the events of Spirit Week and Homecoming. Every Thursday,
students could be found in
their Houses brainstorming,
planning, and preparing fence
decorations which would
adorn the football and field
hockey fields for the big
Homecoming weekend. All
Houses had the task of
embellishing the words “We
are John Paul,” incorporating
their House colors and
symbols. The result was a
tremendous visual display of
Wolf pride! The results were
extremely close with the
House of Diego taking 3rd place, Martin coming in 2nd, and Ruiz earning 1st place.
Blessed John Paul the Great Day
The celebration of Blessed John Paul’s feast day on October 22 brought students
together during a day-long
remembrance of what makes our patron
truly GREAT. Beginning with a feast
day Mass, students and teachers
prayed, played, and shared testimonies
of how their faith has made an impact in
their life. Members of the Servant
Leadership Association planned and led
eight different stations which
incorporated the culture of their House
saint and games which showcased the
virtues that John Paul challenged young
people to embrace. Students rotated
through the stations, listening to student
testimonies and then playing games
such as “blind volleyball,” and “truth or
conscience.” The day ended as it
began, as the school community
gathered around Christ in the Blessed
Sacrament as Father Lundberg led all
in Adoration and Benediction. The day
was a true celebration of community and
a remembrance of the blessings we
have in our patron.

JP Senior Mariah Naegele speaks up for life
The Washington Post recently published a Letter to the Editor written by JP senior
Mariah Naegele (2013). Mariah argues deftly in support of protecting and respecting
vulnerable human beings from legalized euthanasia. Here is an excerpt:
“…we trust doctors to make decisions for our well-being; their purpose is healing.
When a doctor, whose job is to heal and comfort, participates in killing a patient,
trust between the doctor and other patients is jeopardized.”

Mariah also won first prize earlier this year in the Northern Virginia Chapter of
Virginia Society for Human Life's essay contest. She won a $1,000 prize for her

Michael John Poirier Visits JP
Nationally renowned Catholic singer and songwriter, Michael John Poirier, recently
stopped by John Paul and offered a brief
musical meditation following the weekly
all-school Mass.
Mr. Poirier and his family travel the country
leading retreats, evenings of prayer, and
Eucharistic Adoration, encouraging people
of all ages to deepen their relationship with
Christ through the Sacraments, and

JP Makes Music – St. Cecilia Concert
The Music Department performed their first concert of the season on Tuesday,
November 20th in the JP Theater. Members of the band, choirs, and strings program
played an inspiring concert in honor a JP patron, St. Cecilia, who is also patron of
musicians. Since November has several additional themes including All Souls,
Thanksgiving, and
honoring our
veterans, selections
were performed
with each in mind.
Some of the
memorable
performances of the
evening include the
moving tribute to
the children of the Holocaust by the Women’s Choir; the Concert Choir’s rousing
gospel piece, “He Never Failed Me Yet”; the first ever Pope John Paul the Great
String Quartet; the Guitar Ensemble’s performance of Canon Rock, and the Band’s
Tribute to the Armed Forces, where each branch of the Armed Services was
honored. For the finale, the full ensemble sang and played a beautiful rendition of
Peter Wilhousky’s “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. We also honored those band
members who accomplished special achievements, including Julia Stubbs (2015)
for All District Choir; CUA Honors Band: Chris Byrne (2015), Drew Walker (2013),
Kelly Taylor (2015), Morgan Taylor (2015), Victoria Garcia (2015) and Alternates
Joe Patrick (2015), Emily Collins (2015), and Samantha Scott (2014); UVA Band
Day: Chris Byrne, Emily Collins, Victoria Garcia, Kelly Taylor, Drew Walker,
and Joe Patrick. Congratulations to all!

By Tasha Ellis, Class of 2014 This past summer I was commissioned by our
librarian, Mrs. Trax, to paint seven pieces for the library. Each
piece I painted represents a section of the Dewey Decimal
system. In addition, each piece incorporates a letter to spell
out the word ‘LIBRARY’. The
medium I used is acrylic on
canvas with pastel and graphite
accents. My favorite piece is
the letter ‘R’ which represents
the 900’s series—history. I like
how the pyramids, an image
from the past merges with the
future as represented by the
moon.
REAL PRESENCE

Currently on display in the chapel at Pope John Paul the Great.
“This painting depicts the Eucharist, emphasizing Christ’s Real Presence, His church
and its missionary nature. The painting includes Christ crucified and the Resurrected
Christ because the Eucharist is the memorial of Christ’s Passover.¹ His is the New
Passover, “the Pascal mystery of Christ’s cross and Resurrection.”² The figures also
symbolize the invisible reality of the Eucharist; the consecrated host is Christ’s Real
Presence. The “break” painted down the center, and the “missing portion” towards
the bottom of the host refers to a specific moment of the Mass in which the faithful
are called to recognize Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist, “Behold the Lamb of
God who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are they who are called to the
supper of the Lamb.”³ Liturgical colors symbolizing the Church form the border and
are painted in proportion to their use in liturgical vestments throughout the year. The
right hand of the crucified Christ extends beyond the host in blessing, signifying
God’s grace which cannot be contained. Seventy-two rays extend to the edges of
the painting, recalling the
disciples who Christ sent
into the world and implying
that Christ is to the nations
the light which shines out
visibly from the Church. Also
implicit in the design is
Christ’s mandate to go out
to all the nations (painted
here as the “four corners of
the earth”) and “baptize
them in the Name of the
Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit.” ⁴
The octagonal shape
represents the “eighth day”,
the new day that the Lord
has made. The Lord’s
Supper is its center, where
the whole community of the
faithful encounters the risen
Lord.⁵

Catholic Athletes for Christ Honors 2 JP Seniors
On October 9th, Catholic Athletes for Christ (CAC) honored seniors Mariah Naegele
and Sean Stryker with the
2012 High School Leader
Award, along with eight
other student-athletes from
around the diocese. During
the ceremony, held at Top
of the Town in Arlington,
master of ceremonies and
CAC spiritual adviser Fr.
Andrew Fisher commended
the student-athletes as
important role models in
their schools and
communities: “To see
athletes who have their gifts
and talents lead them to
positions where they can
serve others … what a
wonderful example.” CAC
also honored legendary NHL referee Kerry Fraser with the 2012 Courage Award,
and Fraser presented all the High School Leader Award winners with personalized
copies of his autobiography, The Final Call. Catholic Athletes for Christ was formed
in response to Blessed John Paul the Great’s call to evangelize the world of sports,
and works with athletes and coaches at all levels to promote an authentically

Fall Sports Wrap-Up
Congratulations to all the players and coaches of the Fall
season. Below are updates from some of the teams. Winter
season has just begun. Check out the schedule and join the
Wolf Pack for a game sometime soon!
Field Hockey
Varsity Field Hockey finished the season 7-7. Highlights of the season include wins
over Bishop O’Connell, Highland, Middleburg, and St. Gertrude’s, as well as an
overtime win vs. Wakefield. Senior goalie Gaby Jansen (2013) (with 7 shut-outs on
the season) was honored as the team’s Most
Improved Player, Senior defender and captain
Cassandra Buer (2013) was named the
team’s Most Valuable Player, and Junior
Captain Rachel Hoppe (2014) was honored
with the Coach’s Award in recognition of her
dedication to the team. Senior Captain and
lead-scorer Allison O’Donnell (2013) and
Senior new-comer Micah French (2013) will
also be greatly missed next year. Great job to
all this season, including new coach, Mrs.
Becky Murphy!
Cheer
The JP Cheerleaders finished an action-packed fall season and are now preparing
for winter. The Varsity squad cheered at
every Varsity football game. They built
upon skills and perfected routines
learned this summer at Universal
Cheerleaders Association camp, held at
the University of Virginia, while
entertaining fans and supporting players.
The JV and Varsity teams performed
together at the last home varsity football
game of the season, doing a routine that
included a pyramid stunt with two braced
flips, a skill they learned to do at camp. Varsity will cheer at all home basketball
games this winter season! All JP cheerleaders also played a big role in leading
events during Homecoming Week and fall Open House, as they planned and
executed fun, high-energy pep rallies for the student body, and for visiting guests.
Go Wolves!
Volleyball
Varsity Volleyball had a great season winning 7
games, overall. Sophomore Katherine Duquiatan
(2015) led the team in blocks and kills. Senior Taylor
Zalewski (2013) led the team in assists as setter. Best
wishes to our nine graduating seniors from the Class of
2013: Heather Miller, Melina Gonzales, Sinclaire
Hamilton, Rachel Sydow, Taylor Zalewski, Shelby
Mains, Sarah Devin, Kimberly Stoessel, and team
manager Emily Clemente. Go Wolves!
FOOTBALL
Varsity football ended the season 2-8. Sean Stryker (2013)
was honored as the Team’s Golden Helmet Award recipient as
well as the team's most outstanding defensive player. Zak
Perroots (2014) was honored as most outstanding offensive
player. The highlight of the year was the come from behind
win in our second homecoming game.
SOCCER
The Boys Varsity Soccer Team concluded the season finishing with a 7-11-2 record
and a #25 ranking in the state (MaxPreps). The team fought admirably through an
arduous schedule that featured 8 (of 12) Division 1 playoff teams and another 5
Division 2 Playoff Teams taking on 15 of their 21
opponents on the road. A special banquet was held at
the end of the year to honor the team. Nick Metzler
(2013) was named Most Valuable Player. He led the
team in both goals (17) and assists (11) while serving
as a team captain. Ben Borneman (2013) was given
the Wolf Award for his embodiment of courage, faithful
perseverance, determination and for his care and
support of his teammates. Kevin Dennis was
awarded the Coach’s Award for his selflessness,
leadership and determination to be the best young
man and soccer player he could be while helping his
teammates to be the same. Finally, the team gave
special recognition to four-year Senior Manager,
Patrick Bardsley (2013). Patrick has served the
team faithfully over the past four years helping to meet the needs of the players,
coaches, referees and opposing team while sharing his great sense of humor. All of
this year’s seniors - Ben Borneman, Kevin Dennis, Danny Flannery, David Haas,
Nick Metzler and Patrick Bardsley - have helped build a strong foundation for JP
Soccer and will be greatly missed.
CROSS COUNTRY
The 2012 John Paul Cross Country team was a tale of two teams. The Girls team
struggled with injuries
this season to three of
the top runners: Denise
Gallant (2015), Fiona
Soeh (2014), and Emily
Conner (2015).
However, Clare Starrs
(2015), Melony Bennis
(2014), and Danielle
Borneman (2015)
worked hard to hold the
team together and were
rewarded with some
notable successes.
Despite some
frustrating challenges, spirits are high and just about all the girls will be returning
to the team next year. The Boys team, without question, is the best Cross Country
“team” the school as ever had in its young existence. There were 12 athletes
competing for the 7 Varsity spots needed for a high school competition. The boys
won races at Flint Hill, Quantico, and at their only home meet, held at Leesylvania
State Park. The team was lead by 4 senior captains: Mo O’Neil (2013), Jim Leist
(2013), Mike Marsh (2013), and Drew Walker (2013). Freshman Andre Gallant
(2016) is challenging first year runner Sean Tully (2015) for that all-important “5th
runner”. The Boy’s team finished 3rd in the Virginia Catholic Schools State
Championship, accomplishing their best finish ever. Mo O’Neil captured the
school’s first individual State Championship medal, winning the race with a
time of 16:43. The Boy’s went on to finish 9th in the Virginia Independent School
State Championships at Woodberry Forest.

High School Placement Test (HSPT)
All rising Freshmen and Sophomore students coming from a home school program
must take the High School Placement Test (HSPT). Rising freshmen coming from a
diocesan school will take the test in their 8th grade classroom in November. All other
applicants should take the test on either December 1, 2012 or January 12, 2013 at
John Paul the Great. Pre-registration is required. Click here for the registration form

Alumni News
Patrick Guelcher (2012) is one of the 423 new members of
the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. After completing the
rigorous week-long New Cadet Training last August, Patrick
was officially inducted into the regiment during the New
Cadet Parade.

St. Thomas Aquinas Family Faith Night – Dec 3
