In December 2008 Rezin Orthopedics and Sports
Medicine opened their doors to the Bolingbrook
community. The opportunity to expand was too
good too pass with the new Adventist Bolingbrook
Hospital, coupled with the addition of physicians
to our group, and the ever-expanding Bolingbrook
area. Located just Northeast from Adventist
Bolingbrook Hospital at 329 Remington Blvd,
Rezin Orthopedics and Vital Care Physical Therapy
occupy 5500 square feet of a newly built two
story Irgens Development.

the full continuum of care including
three orthopedic surgeons, a podiatrist,

Dr. Pulluru, an orthopedic surgeon and fellowship

Sharing the office space on Remington
and rounding out the continuum of care
is Vital Care Physical Therapy and Sports
Rehabilitation. Vital Care Physical Therapy

First Area Outpatient Joint
Arthroplasty Performed
As the population of those that need a joint
replacement procedure grows, so does the
advancement and technology available to
orthopedic surgeons. These advancements
have led Keith M. Rezin, MD to the advantages
of the Partial Knee Replacement. Dr. Rezin has
performed hundreds of since the 1990’s and
has continued his education on this procedure
in order to perfect and modify it. This diligence
recently allowed him to perform this surgery
in a purely outpatient basis at the Deerpath
Orthopedic Surgical Center in Morris, Illinois.
“The first outpatient partial joint arthroplasty
went as expected,” Dr. Rezin commented.
“The team at Deerpath Orthopedic Surgical
Center is well equipped and trained to handle
a procedure of this magnitude, so I was
confident in performing this surgery there.”
I am confident that offering this minimally
invasive procedure as an outpatient procedure
with the new technique, both surgically
and from the anesthetic standpoint is safe
and allows patients to avoid any
hospital convalescence.”
The procedure itself utilizes the Oxford
Unicompartmental Knee prosthesis in patients
with knee arthritis limited to only one part
of their knee. Unlike total knee replacement
involving removal of all the knee joint surfaces,
a partial knee replacement resurfaces only
one side of the knee joint. Up to forty percent
of the 500,000 patients that now undergo
total knee arthroplasty in the U.S. could benefit
from this new knee prosthesis now done on
an outpatient basis. Outpatient procedures
allow patients to return home after surgery
to recover in the comforts of their own home.

Dr. Rezin continues to be at the forefront of
advancements in joint replacements by offering
this minimally invasive procedure as an outpatient surgery. This procedure allows him
to effectively educate patients before and
after surgery, use minimally invasive tools
and techniques to optimize recovery time,
and improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.
It allows patients to receive the optimum care
and service that an inpatient surgery candidate
would, but without having to stay in a hospital.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery –
Small Incision, Big Results
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is one
of the most common conditions of the
hand and wrist, affecting millions of
Americans each year. CTS occurs when
the median nerve, one of three main
nerves to the hand, becomes compressed
at the level of the wrist. The compression,
due to an inflamed and thickened
ligament lying on top of the nerve, can
sometimes be associated with repetitive
activity of the wrist. Symptoms often
include numbness, tingling, heaviness
and pain in select parts of the hand
and wrist.
Initial treatment of CTS is often
conservative, involving simple medicines
and braces. Surgery is considered for
long-standing or severe cases and those
who don’t improve with such conservative
measures. Nerve testing is always done
to confirm the diagnosis before surgery
is undertaken.
During the past ten years, I
have developed and modified
a technique using a mini-incision
for Carpal Tunnel surgery. This
minimally invasive procedure
has replaced the lengthy surgery
and rehab of conventional
Carpal Tunnel treatment.
My goal has been to reduce operative
time, limit tissue dissection and minimize
patient discomfort. In conjunction with
The Hand Center, I have developed an
accelerated rehab protocol with the
goal of returning patients to their
desired activities more rapidly and with
greater success.
Eric Ortinau, MD
I perform Mini–incision Carpal Tunnel
surgery through a small, one centimeter
incision that requires very little deep tissue
dissection. The thickened ligament is
released, relieving pressure on the nerve
and promoting return of feeling, strength
and function to the hand. The procedure,
usually lasting no more than 5 to 7
minutes, is done with local anesthetic
and mild sedation in an outpatient
setting. Postoperative therapy at the
Hand Center is done for 3-4 weeks
after surgery. Use of the hand is
gradually increased during this time
and full activity is allowed by the time
formal therapy is completed.
During my 10 years here at Rezin
Orthopedics, I have performed over
750 mini-incision Carpal Tunnel Release
procedures. Since honest feedback from
my patients is always a good measure of
success, all 750 patients were surveyed
over this past year. The results of these
surveys show that well over 90% of my
patients have received relief of their
Carpal Tunnel symptoms and have
returned to their desired activities after
surgery. These results appear to be more
favorable than those of national studies
using conventional surgical and
rehabilitation techniques. I attribute a
large part of this success to the team
effort formed between patient, physician
and therapist throughout every patient’s
treatment course.

Whitney Cox had a goal. It was a lofty
goal for a gentleman with chronic knee
pain, but one he intended to reach. Prior
to living in Illinois, Whitney Cox lived in
Tempe, Arizona where he frequently
traveled the four hour trip to the Grand
Canyon National Park. “I have been there
a number of times, but was only able to
walk down a mile or so before the pain in
my knees was too much to continue,”
Cox states.
For 15 years, Cox battled with chronic
knee pain stemming from daily functions
including walking up and down stairs,
squatting, kneeling and sitting. Cox was
referred by a friend to Dr. Stephen Treacy
of Rezin Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Treacy diagnosed him with patellofemoral
syndrome, (abnormal softening of
cartilage under the kneecap) and
recommended physical therapy.
Already trying fitness centers and
painkillers in order to alleviate the pain,
Cox skeptically made an appointment at
Vital Care Physical Therapy. “I told my
physical therapist that it was my goal to
hike the Grand Canyon and to be pain
free. She developed a specific routine of
therapeutic exercises designed to address
these goals. It was the personal interest of
Vital Care clinicians that helped me to

created a personalized exercise and stretch
routine specific to Whitney Cox’s
condition. Pain free and the leader of his
group of friends, Whitney Cox hiked the
Havasupai Canyon in the Grand Canyon
in early 2007.
With that, we are excited to announce that we
have joined forces with Morris Hospital’s
prepared family and childbirth preparation
classes to introduce pelvic floor strengthening
and awareness, along with other physical
therapy related issues acquired during
childbearing, and to future mothers.

Paul A. Sauer, MD
Dr. Paul Sauer graduated with his Doctor of Medicine in 1989,
and continued with his residency/internship program at the Henry Ford
Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He went on to complete a Joint Replacement Fellowship
at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. As a board-certified surgeon, his focus and expertise
is on the treatment of General Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, and Hand Surgery. His fellowship education
and expertise has allowed him to sub-specialize in the treatment of hip and knee replacements including
complex primary’s and revisions. Dr. Sauer sees patients in Joliet, Bolingbrook, and Plainfield.
Renee’ M. Reichert, DPM
Dr. Renee’ Reichert graduated from Loyola University in 1998 and continued on at the Scholl College of
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Finch University. She did her Residency at Michael Reese Hospital under Dr.
Michael J. Fox (formerly the Edgewater Residency). Dr. Reichert is a Podiatrist with comprehensive experience
in forefoot/rearfoot podiatric surgery of the foot and ankle, including but not limited to: bunions, hammertoes, foot and ankle trauma/fractures, reconstruction, and implantation of synthetic joints. Her special area of
practice is in lower extremity nerve decompression for nerve damage secondary to diabetes, trauma, tarsal
tunnel, and alcohol/chemical neuropathies. Dr. Reichert sees patients in Morris, Joliet, and Bolingbrook.
