Your generosity helped us accomplish our mission at every turn. The Caldera Project and its many facets continue to ensure that the Henry’s Fork is managed as one of the pre-eminent wild trout streams in the U.S. We were able to initiate an adult trout habitat-use study in Harriman State Park, refine our data collection to determine the nature of the Buffalo River’s contribution to the Henry’s Fork fish population, and build momentum for further enhancement of Caldera tributaries. On top of this, we maintained our position as a watershed leader by co-facilitating the Henry’s Fork Watershed Council and making key contributions toward the completion of the Henry’s Fork Basin Study. We also contributed to local land protection efforts, educated our local youth about trout, and instilled a passion in them for their watershed through angling. Luckily, the wild trout population of 6,000+ fish per mile in the Box Canyon is available to all of these new anglers. You made all of this possible. You continue to support the Foundation through events and donations. Henry’s Fork Foundation board members step forward time and again in support of the Henry’s Fork by providing their expertise and time to make sure that the Henry’s Fork Foundation is truly the Voice of the River. Because 2014 marks the Foundation’s 30th anniversary, it has the potential to be even better. I hope you will have the time to make it to the Henry’s Fork this year and enjoy the fruits of your investment. If a trip is not in the cards this year, stay in touch with us at one of our events, through the newsletter or Monthly Hatch, or make a call to check in on how our work is progressing. Thanks again for all that you do for the Henry’s Fork and its wild trout! With my board term up this year, I’ve given time to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished in just the six years I’ve been on the board, let alone the last 30 years. We couldn’t have done any of it without your generosity. Your generosity ensured that the Henry’s Fork Forever Campaign, begun in 2008 and concluded at the end of 2013, surpassed expectations during one of the most difficult economic times in our country. You helped us exceed a $3.5 million goal, ensuring the Foundation can continue to do essential conservation work long into the future. Your gift has already helped us accomplish the following projects essential to both the Henry’s Fork wild trout fishery and its future protection: • Research and restoration projects as part of the Caldera Project that will ensure this legendary wild trout fishery only continues to getter better. • Construction and installation of a fish ladder at Chester Dam that will reconnect trout habitat fragmented for more than 70 years. • Renovation of a new office building to give the Foundation a permanent home for our conservation work. Your gift to the Foundation’s endowment guarantees the Foundation remains viable in protecting the Henry’s Fork over the long term, enabling us to respond rapidly and effectively to critical threats to the fishery and its watershed. We know that Foundation’s members like you are the reason so much has been accomplished over the last 30 years and the reason the Henry’s Fork will be protected for years to come. Robert Dotson NOTABLE NUMBERS 4,000 The number of wild trout the Buffalo River likely contributes to the Henry’s Fork each year. 130,000 The number of fish that have used the Buffalo River fish ladder since early 2006, after Fall River Rural Electric Co-op completed its installation. 20 The number of years the Henry’s Fork Watershed Council has provided a forum for collaboration in sustaining the resources of the Henry’s Fork watershed for future generations. 6,200 The number of fish per mile that Idaho Fish & Game estimated in the Box Canyon reach of the Henry’s Fork, more than twice the average estimate over the last 20 years. 200 The number of fifth-graders who have graduated from Trout in the Classroom at Ashton Elementary. 119 The number of fish caught by 15 fifthgraders in one day with the Youth on the Fly program. 2 Buffalo River Contributes to Record Wild Trout Numbers Study Shows Value of Aquatic Plants for Adult Rainbow Trout Sediment Monitoring Shows Trout Habitat not Harmed Idaho Department of Fish and Game estimated the number of rainbow trout in the Box Canyon at more than 6,200 fish per mile in May of 2013. That’s the highest trout estimate since 1978. Even better, the population is now made up of wild trout, whereas in the 1970s it was partly supported by stocked fish. A new habitat-use study underway by HFF and Grand Valley State University has documented the important role of submerged aquatic vegetation in providing habitat for adult rainbow trout in the Harriman State Park reach of the Henry’s Fork. Responding to higher-than-average demand for irrigation water stored in Island Park Reservoir during the summer of 2013, HFF designed and implemented a project to measure the amount of sediment delivered downstream from the reservoir as it was drawn down late in the summer. Though a good water year in 2011 was partly responsible for the large numbers, HFF’s ongoing monitoring of the fish ladder at the Buffalo River hydroelectric dam shows that the Buffalo River provides both winter habitat for young trout and spawning habitat for adult trout. The combined effect could be contributing as many as 4,000 wild rainbow trout to the Henry’s Fork fishery each year. 3 Photosynthesis by aquatic plants maintains high dissolved oxygen levels in the river, especially late in the afternoon when water temperatures are high. And heavy plant growth during the hot summer of 2013 helped maintain higher water depths—and more trout habitat—during autumn, when river flows were low. Though the reservoir was drawn down to 26 percent of capacity, sediment delivery to the river downstream was only about 11 tons per day. That’s compared with more than 1,000 tons per day during the memorable fall of 1992, when the reservoir was drawn down to less than one percent of capacity. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation contributed laboratory analysis to the project. Watershed Collaboration Improves Wild Trout Fishery Rehabilitation Projects Improve Access and Reduce Erosion Youth on the Fly Pairs Local Kids With Local Guides The Henry’s Fork Watershed Council celebrated 20 years of community collaboration in sustaining the resources of the Henry’s Fork watershed for future generations. The Island Park Drought Management Planning Committee is one of many successful partnerships that have grown out of the Council’s work. Through this committee, HFF works to shape water releases from Island Park Reservoir to maximize river flow during winter months when juvenile trout need it most. “Shaping” water releases improves the wild trout fishery while ensuring downstream farmers have the water they need during irrigation season. By creating win-win situations like these, the Watershed Council has become a model for watershed collaboration across the nation. In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, HFF and local contractors improved river access and reduced erosion at several high-use sites around the watershed, including the Lower Coffee Pot trail on the upper Henry’s Fork, the Grandview boat slide below Mesa Falls, and Sheep Falls Road on Fall River. Future participation in river recreation is essential to sustained conservation of the Henry’s Fork and its wild trout fishery. To foster the initial connection between kids and fishing, HFF developed an innovative fishing program— Youth on the Fly—that guarantees the first cast made by participants is not their last. The program teams up local watershed kids with local professional guides, who donate a full day of guided, personal instruction to participants while floating the Henry’s Fork. By patiently providing one-on-one instruction, an uncrowded river view, guaranteed wild trout catches, and fly fishing gear that can be checked out free-ofcharge at any time, Youth on the Fly introduces fishing as a form of recreation that local residents can enjoy forever. 4 Rehabilitation of rutted and eroding trails and roads not only improves access but also reduces sources of sediment that can be washed into the river during heavy rains and spring runoff. Funding for these projects was provided by the Eastern Idaho Resource Advisory Council. Zaninovich Robert Dotson (RobertDotson.com) River Steward Level Thanks for your gift of $500 or more 6 INVITATION TO GIVE The Foundation’s efforts throughout the river are revealed with improved fish and wildlife habitat, more trout, and some of the best fishing in years. Island Park Reservoir water releases negotiated on behalf of wild trout helped protect the fishery through the coldest winter months. These flows, along with the influence of the Buffalo River fish ladder, were responsible for the biggest news in 2013 as Idaho Fish and Game reported a new record of 6,000 fish per mile from the spring Box Canyon fish count. The Foundation’s efforts can also be seen at work on the lower river where a hydroelectric project at Chester Dam will be completed by late winter 2014. A fish ladder at the site will soon allow trout to gain access to habitat upstream from the dam, and in the Fall River as well, for the first time in more than 70 years. This long-awaited reconnection is expected to significantly benefit the lower river fishery as will fish screens on two canal head gates also located at the dam. With all that, I could never have expected an unbelievable rainbow taken during a PMD hatch in late June, even on the Henry’s Fork. It was the fish of a lifetime. The passing of two longtime friends of the river this last year was a loss felt personally and within the Henry’s Fork community as well. But it also served as a reminder of the work that can be accomplished by those who love the river. Bob Evans and Hugo Melvoin will be missed greatly, but their legacy as advocates for the Henry’s Fork will continue to inspire future generations. As is so often the case in matters pertaining to the river, the Henry’s Fork Foundation deserves our gratitude. Join me by giving to this unique organization and ensure the Henry’s Fork remains one of the best fly fishing destinations for years to come.
