Body of Work: Myers Art Prizes 2015 Dates: Oct 12–29 Reception: Oct 15, 5-7pm A juried Art + Art Education student exhibition exploring material and metaphysical conceptions of the body. Shani Rhys James Dates: Oct 15–29 Reception: Oct 15, 5-7pm An exhibition showcasing the work of artist-in-residence, Shani Rhys James. Brushes with History Dates: Nov 2–22 Reception: Nov 19, 5-7pm An exhibition highlighting Teachers College contributions in shaping the field of visual art education, in consultation with the Gottesman Libraries’ staff. MACY ART GALLERY Studio Works Toeing the Line Dates: Nov 24–Dec 18 Reception: Dec 3, 5-7pm Painting, Drawing and Sculpture: Selected student artwork from Teachers College studio courses. Dates: Mar 7–31 Reception: Mar 10, 5-7pm Artist Line Bruntse’s Danish heritage inspires a humorous commentary where women’s hand-work meets architecture. Jesse Jagtiani & Sohee Koo: Experiences of (Dis) Connection Dates: Jan 19–Feb 9 Reception: Fri Feb 5, 5-7pm Two doctoral students explore aspects of “reality” through a variety of media, while also bringing attention to the details of everyday life and unfolding layers of awareness. Rita Gold Children’s Art Dates: Feb 15–Mar 3 Reception: Fri Feb 26, 3:30-5:30 pm An exhibition showcasing the artistic explorations, experiments, and adventures of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. In Conversation Dates: Mar 7–31 Reception: Mar 10, 5-7pm A diverse group exhibition inspired by a series of NYC studio interviews conducted by curator Stephanie Buhman. TEACHERS COLLEGE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY Studio Works Dates: Apr 4–28 Reception: Apr 7, 5-7pm Ceramics, Printmaking, Photography and New Media: Selected student artwork from Teachers College studio courses. Student Teachers Dates: May 2–20 Reception: Sun May 15, 1-3pm Artworks by elementary and secondary students from the classrooms of graduating MA with certification student teachers. Roadwork Dates: May 30–June 30 Reception: Fri June 3, 5–7pm Visual documentation of an action/research-based community project carried out along Lincoln Road Mall in Miami Beach, Florida by Teachers College students, faculty, and artists based at the ArtCenter/South Florida. All receptions take place on Thursdays, from 5-7pm, unless listed otherwise. Additional Programming Artist in Residence: Shani Rhys James Brushes with History Conference Conversation with Presidents Date: Sept 21-Oct 15 Shani Rhys James depicts the female figure–frequently herself–as part of a continuing exploration on the role of women in domestic spaces. An accomplished painter, she has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including a National Portrait Award. She lives and works in Wales. Date: Nov 19-22 A forum for the presentation and discussion of ideas, issues, information, and research approaches used within the historical investigation of art education. Date to be announced. The presidents of five of the most renowned art schools in the world will come together at Teachers College to consider the most pressing issues confronting the education of the artist in today’s world. Conversations Across Cultures: Why talk about gender? Date: Mar 25-26 A conversation on feminism and gender issues within contemporary art education and the larger art world.
