FROM THE EDITOR On the dance floors of the Circuit, you can’t help but be awed by the crowd. It’s hard to imagine that there are many other gatherings on the planet with so many physically fit people in the same place. But, wait a minute! This partying thing is supposed to be an unhealthy lifestyle! How can it be that so many of the guys on the dance floor are in such top-notch condition? It’s easy to be dazzled by the guys that look like they stepped off the pages of A&F, but even looking beyond these beauties, you’ll see that being fit is a pervasive part of our culture. At most parties, you’ll find that almost everyone goes to the gym on some kind of schedule (though, in some cases, the schedule is obviously a little sketchy). Health & Fitness Issue Our critics would say that this finding is no surprise – working out is as much a part of the admission charge to our parties as the cost of the ticket. But rather than body fascism, I see it as a healthy social mechanism that encourages people to take care of their physical selves. Dancing for hours on end is, in and of itself, quite a crash course in body toning. It’s a well-known phenomenon that as the party weekend drags on, the boys’ bodies become more and more ripped (as their faces tend toward weary). Back in the nineties, I depended upon my weekly dance floor sessions for my aerobic exercise. When I slowed down and went out dancing less, it took a little while for me to realize that I had better add in the stepping machine at the gym. Paulo Page 72 Is it our mental health that suffers, then? Is that why society says that partying is not healthy for you? Perhaps. Post-party depression may not yet be in the psychology text books, but it is undoubtedly quite real. However, there are times when a party has been just what the doctor ordered. The need to dance can be almost a physical craving; the body remembers that dancing is a means to blow off steam and to release stress. For me, when I use the party sparingly, it can be a legitimate coping strategy. There is a whole contingent of forty- and even fifty-somethings on the Circuit who have maintained their physical prowess. It’s almost tempting to claim that partying is an important ingredient in a healthy lifestyle. What is clear is that the men of the Circuit provide ample evidence that partying doesn’t have to be a destructive lifestyle. - Steve Kammon Circuit 2 Noize Manny Lehman Page 92 TM Editor in Chief Steve Kammon [email protected] Publisher Stephen Ceplenski [email protected] The Premier Guide to Dance Events Worldwide TABLE OF CONTENTS 16 Senior Editor Jeffery Taylor Life Givin' Party by Steve Kammon Schedule Editor Scotty van Tussenbrook 26 Eye of Newt 32 Addressing Party-Stress Art Director Anke Mackenthun Circuit Photos www.GreatPartyPics.com Yves Langlais Moody Mustafa Russ Youngblood www.CircuitBoyPhoto.com www.peterlippman.com www.duanecramer.com by Dr. Chris Mann 38 Pimp Your Workout by Jason Benetto 44 Republican Pick-Up Lines by Dennis Fleming 50 The Ears Have It 54 Circuit Donkey Associate Publisher Advertising Sales Gary Steinberg 818-769-9390 [email protected] Writers and Contributors Jason Benetto Dennis Fleming Dr. Chris Mann Edna St. Vincent Millay Jamie Nicholes Michael Talley D. Like everything in life, it will be your approach to the party that determines how that impact will be felt. Some of my older party boy friends talk about how they can no longer go to Circuit party weekends because it takes them a week to recover. But I’m no spring chicken, and while I don’t do the parties the way I used to, I have learned how to do it so that the party enhances my life, not trashes it. When I succeed at using party therapy, the week after a party is not a time of sniffly nose, foggy head, sour moods and messy days – but, rather, the weeks after a party are the most productive of my life. There are many techniques for making a party weekend into something that works as a device of transformation rather than as the central theme of a destructive lifestyle. What works for one person may or may not work for another. Walking this path is all about setting the intention to make your party into a positive, transformative experience. You have to listen to your body and figure out how to enhance your own experience so that the party is cleansing you and lifting you up. Here are some ideas to get you started down this path. Circuit Break It Down to Build It Up It is interesting that Shiva is the Hindu god who is both the dancing god and the god of destruction. His destructive energies are exactly the kind of energy that I am talking about harnessing. Shiva breaks down the old, dated constructs of society to allow for new growth. So you too must learn how to use the energy of a dance party to break down old limitations and places in your life where you are blocked, allowing for the possibility of new growth. This effect operates on all three levels of our existence – the physical, mental, and spiritual. On the physical level, a party weekend is a harsh physical workout, which can be either good or bad for you, depending on the approach. It is well known that in order to change some aspect of your physical body, one of the most effective mechanisms is to first break your body down (like we do when lifting weights) and that change can only be initiated by a change in routine. Dancing can be a very full-body exercise that is both aerobic and very good at contracting and stretching muscles in ways they are not normally used. This kind of rich 16 Noize body motion is especially beneficial if your 9-5 involves mostly sitting behind a desk. On the mental level, many of us are very familiar with the effects of some of the medications that we consume on the dance floor. In essence, these substances operate under the same Shiva pattern of energy. They mentally break us down before we grow wings and fly. These same substances can undoubtedly be very harmful if you overindulge or if you allow your use of them to become too habitual. But when used in a controlled way, Circuit many of these substances can help us work through issues where we’re stuck – offering new insights and new ways of looking at life. Getting the chance to bond with my tribe on the dance floor is often a very spiritually uplifting experience for me. There are times when this is not so. I notice that the main difference between the times that a dance floor rejuvenates me and when it oppresses me has to do with where my focus is. If I am focused on me – do I look good enough to be out? Will anyone find me attractive? My hair looks like shit, I knew I should have gotten it cut… then the dance 17 Noize Proper Preparation preparing to take part in a major athletic event. Many of us are already doing this kind of training, tuning our bodies to look their finest over the weekend. However, the preparations you need to make are about more than just making sure that your workout routine is peaking and your abs are ripped into the perfect 8-pack (though these are also excellent preparations). A Circuit party weekend has about the same impact on the body as doing a couple triathlons in a row. You need to prepare for a Circuit party weekend just as if you are It’s crucial to get plenty of sleep in the week that leads up to the party. It is not, for example, a good idea to “train” for a party weekend by partying in your hometown the weekend before you floor can be a very oppressive place. If instead I focus outside of myself and make the attempt to reach out to strangers with random acts of kindness, then I soon start spiraling upward feeling better and better about myself and the state of my life. Circuit 18 Noize travel. It is also important to get the digestive tract running smoothly so that you’re starting out the weekend with few toxins in your body and with maximum nutrition in your cells. This means eating right and perhaps using some kind of fiber supplement to ensure that you start out the weekend with a perfectly tuned digestive tract. The best product of this type that I have found is called Fiberzon; it can be ordered online at www.sfwizard. amazonherb.net. Managing Party Stress There are four key areas of party stress that you have to monitor and actively tune during the course of the weekend and the first days back from the party. These are Circuit proper hydration, getting nutritious food into your system, getting some sleep, and managing serotonin and dopamine levels in your brain. The techniques to manage these party stress problem areas are addressed in Dr. Chris Mann’s article in this issue called “Addressing Party-Stress”. Setting Your Intention I find it very important to set aside time at the start of an evening to center myself and set my intention for making the night of partying be the kind of transformative experience that I know it can be. The best time to do this is during that slightly disorienting time period when a roll is just starting to hit. Find a place where you are alone and you feel comfortable. Focus on your breathing. Clear your 19 Noize mind. Allow yourself to visualize what you hope to accomplish on this night of dancing – actually make it a point to see a picture of the transformed you – more relaxed, less stressed, more expanded in your heart, happy and appreciative that you get to live this rich, vibrant life – whatever it is that you hope to accomplish through your dance journey. Breathing The breath is the lifeblood of inspiration. Many divergent spiritual paths teach methods for using the breath to create transformation on the physical, mental, and spiritual planes. It can be as simple as focusing on breathing deeper – into the abdomen rather than into the top part of the lungs. Or, if you want to learn more about some powerful breathing practices I suggest that you seek out a yoga instructor who can teach you a technique called Kapalabhati breathing. This is a forced exhale breathing technique that I have found to be an excellent practice to center myself. Flushing When you dance for hours on end, you should be sweating. (If you’re not, then you should be drinking more fluids.) When we are drinking much more water than usual and flushing it through our systems through both sweat and increased urination, we are essentially doing a major flush of our entire system. If you keep your substance intake at minimal levels, then you will actually end up with a decrease in toxicity in your body from all the aerobic Circuit activity combined with this flushing effect. Blowing Off Steam This is a simple breathing technique that you can use on a dance floor to help you to transform your mental state. When you have an unwanted thought stream that is banging around in your head, this is an excellent way to remove some of its power. Breathe deep into your stomach, filling the lungs about 2/3 full. Press the air down even farther, allowing your stomach to expand with the air that you’re pushing down there - press it all the way down into your sexual organs. Allow yourself to fully feel the feelings associated with the thought that is plaguing you. Remember to focus on the feelings that the thought causes – not the thought itself. Hold the breath for as long as you can hold those feelings. Then, with an explosive exhale, blow those feelings right up and out of your core. It’s a good idea to blow them up above the crowd and not directly on your neighbor – who might not appreciate that kind of blowjob. Stretching You might think that stretching is only recommended for helping with cramped muscles. But actually, it has been shown that many of us hold emotional trauma in the muscles of our bodies. A dance party weekend is an excellent time to heal the emotional scars that are buried in your body. After extended periods of dancing, your muscles will enter a state of hypertrophy. As the muscles contract more and more, the effect on the toxins in the muscles is similar to that of wringing water from a towel. If you leave your muscles in this hypertrophic state, however, the muscles will start producing fresh toxins 20 Noize Massage as bi-products of the extreme work they’re doing even in their “rested” state. This is why it is crucial to stretch the muscles throughout the weekend. Don’t be shy. Do it right on the dance floor. Bend forward at the hips, cross your arms holding each elbow with the opposite hand and just let your upper body hang off of your lower body. Breathe in and lengthen the spine, torso rising with the intake of breath, and then collapse again into the stretch. The triangle is another excellent standing stretch for the lower back. Circuit One of the many reasons to give kudos to the BBCM in Montreal for their production of the Black and Blue is that they always have a team of massage therapists working through the night. Through massage, you can get the same release of chemical and emotional toxins from stretching, but at an even deeper level. In addition, there is something very magical about having someone lay their hands on you with the intention of healing. It works best when you are actively participating in that process by breathing into the areas that are being massaged, sending oxygen and love to the places in your body that need attention. 21 Noize :(:28/'/,.(727+$1.$// 3$57,&,3$7,1*352027(56'-6632162561,*+7&/8%6 3(5)250(56$1'0267,03257$17/<$//2)<28:+2 0$'(48((5$6)2/.7+(%$%</217285 48((5$6)2/.)8785(%$%</217285$1' 48((5$6)2/.$1&,(17%$%</217285 $1(125028668&&(66 :(:,//$11281&('(7$,/62) j6728521-$18$5<7+528*+ (17(5%$%</21&20 Iahmh3ppp'fZkd`kZgmaZf'nl rfcsjrgk_rce_wncpqml_jquc`qgrc Eye of Newt Eric Newton and Sagiv Ben Binyamin are the core of the Eye of Newt Circus. Their powerful two-man trapeze act is their signature skill, but they also perform a hand-balancing routine as well as other aerial acts using rope and fabric. Their act leaves people with a feeling of wonder because of a graceful quality that transcends mere physical strength and agility. Though there are certainly some cool “tricks” in the act, the magic is Sagiv is from Tel Aviv, where he had trained as a gymnast. Eric hails from Philadelphia, but it was in San Francisco where he studied theatre and aerial circus arts. He also gained significant experience traveling with Cirque du Soleil in Quidam. Eric and Sagiv are now based in Los Angeles. Out and proud, they are not a couple. Although they admit that because of how close their lives are entwined, they end up with all the baggage of coupledom without the sex. in the choreography that flows between these moves and the apparent connection between these two beautiful men. It is homoerotic without being overtly sexual. Circuit Their first big Circuit gig was at Masterbeat LA New Years 2003. They’ve since been featured at White Party Palm Springs, Cherry, Chrome, Viva Las Vegas and Fireball. 26 Noize Circuit 27 Noize Circuit performances can be some of their most nerve-racking because of the unfamiliar and challenging venues. Masterbeat was in the Grand Olympic Auditorium which has extremely high ceilings. “We climbed down from the catwalk on two ropes, 60 feet above the crowd in the dark, through intense fog to the trapeze – which was 25 feet off the ground. We were scared to death!” Not to mention that 3:00 AM is not the optimal performance time! They’ve also performed on a couple of RSVP gay cruises, where one of the challenges is hand-balancing on a surface that is rolling. Circuit 28 Noize The complete Eye of Newt Circus is a larger ensemble. This team developed a show called Figments which ran in Hollywood for two months. They have just shot a beautiful music video for their singer Dena Risha which features the full Eye of Newt Circus company. They plan to use this video to launch an allnew production that will premiere in LA and eventually tour. Their other theatre work includes Spiderman Rocks! at Universal Studios and Cirque de la Mer at Sea World. You can catch Eric and Sagiv and other company members in their live theatrical show Dreamland every Thursday in Hollywood at the White Lotus. They have been in such films as The Polar Express and can be seen in the soon-to-bec o m p l e t e d The Storyteller. And keep an eye out for this dynamic duo at the upcoming World Stunt Awards on E! The magic of Eye of Newt Circus is in the character of the performance. Eric and Sagiv leave an emotional impact. When performing for a Circuit crowd they used to kiss at the end of the act to affirm and celebrate their sexuality along with the community. Now they trust the act to speak for itself and let love flow through their every move. It’s all too easy to end up getting sick on the return to your regular life. There are four key areas that get disrupted when you spend a weekend partying. Here are some tips to keep your energy levels up during the weekend and keep you feeling well when you return home. HYDRATION If you are a “hard dancer” or someone who spends the whole night on the dance floor, then it’s important to be conscious of replacing the electrolytes and fluid volume that you’re going to lose in sweat. Dehydration is also accelerated by some of the “chemicals” that are commonly ingested. Muscle cramps are a sure sign that you have a problem with either your fluid level or your electrolyte level. Staying well hydrated will also head off some of the headaches that people experience after partying. Because it takes about ninety minutes to two hours for the electrolytes in drinks like Powerade, Gatorade, and Red Bull, to be absorbed, you should “pre-load” your electrolytes by drinking these kinds of drinks before going to a party. During the party you can alter nate between water and “energy” drinks, being sure to drink a sufficient volume of fluid. It’s a common myth to think that you should just drink enough to CCiirrccuuiitt satisfy your thirst. The body regulates its hydration levels according to the normal pattern of exertion and for a particular environment. This means that when you are exceeding your normal level of physical effort on a hot dance floor, your body may need even more fluid than what your thirst is telling you. EATING Some people eat just fine when partying – they devour huge meals full of all the high-carb, fatty foods that they normally deny themselves. But for most people, partying is going to make your digestive track a little tender as well as a little slower in its functioning. Drugs like ecstacy or tina will increase your metabolism causing you to burn even more calories than you’re already burning from dancing. Providing your body with nutritious food intake is critical on a party weekend not only to keep your energy levels up but also to ensure that your immune system continues to work properly. 32 4 NNooiizzee weekend to supplement with minerals and B vitamins. GETTING SLEEP Many party substances cause a significant sympathetic stimulation of the brain. This can prevent some people from getting the sleep they need to recover from all the drama that a party weekend may bring to their bodies. Missing sleep on top of the other stresses on your body is a recipe for disaster and will be a significant factor in getting sick after a party. Sleep aids are therefore an important part of the party regimen. When you have overindulged, or when you’ve done methamphetamine, standard sleeping aids (Tylenol PM, Restoril, Ambien) may not have the effectiveness needed to get some rest in a post-party state. For these situations, Xanax can be a more potent solution. If you’re one of those people that has a difficult time eating real food on a party weekend, be sure to have some six-packs of drinks like Ensure or Boost in your room. If you are not really eating, you should ingest at least three to four of these drinks a day. Smoothies, yogurt, protein shakes, and applesauce are other foods that are easy on your stomach and provide much-needed calories. Xanax (Alprazolam) is intended to treat anxiety rather than for use as a sleep aid. However, it does make you drowsy as a side effect and has a more direct chemical impact on the brain than that caused by standard sleep aids. Therefore, Xanax is a more powerful option for the over-stimulated brain. However, Xanax blocks stage 3 and 4 sleep patterns, which are your deep dream and body repair states. These states of sleep are the most beneficial and are critical for your body to fully recover. Therefore, you should limit the use of Xanax to cases where nothing else will work. If you continue to use Xanax You should already be on a onea-day vitamin with minerals. Your intestines absorb only what they need, so you want to be on a daily supplement that will replace any deficits in your diet. However, if you’re not in this habit, then it is especially important on a party 33 4 CCi ri cr u c ui ti t N oo ii zz ee N regularly as a sleep aid, you will g ro w fati g ued and u n re s t e d because you will be blocking your body from dropping into the deep sleep that it needs. This sets you up for illness, because your immune system cannot recover without these stages of sleep. To summarize, Xanax is NOT a good sleeping aid – but it IS the most effective help for brief sleep after “stimulants” have been used. SERATONIN REPLACEMENT examples of this class of drugs. It is important to take these drugs at the beginning of the day, as they can keep you awake otherwise. See your doctor about whether these drugs are right for you. Dr. Chris Mann is the MedEvent Medical Director. At most major Circuit parties, you will see medical volunteers wearing red or white shirts with “MedEvent” on them. MedEvent personnel are physicians, paramedics, nurses, and EMTs who partake in the Circuit themselves and volunteer to provide medical support for these events. If you are one of those people who suffer from “post-ecstasy depression,” there are things that you can do to help decrease this effect. An over-the-counter possibility is 5-HTP, which you can get at any vitamin store. While this supplement seems to work for some, it seems to do little for many. An excellent all-natural antidote for this problem is to put in a fairly good aerobic workout on your first day back from the party. If you can exert yourself for 20 minutes or more at greater than 65% of your sub-maximum heart rate (just get a good rigorous sweat going), you will get an endorphin-dump from your brain that will rapidly rebalance your adrenaline, serotonin, and other key neurotransmitters, which will greatly speed your recovery. Low dose SSRI anti-depressants are also very effective at leveling off serotonin levels. Zoloft, Effexor, Lexapro, and low-dose Prozac are Circuit 34 Noize Pimp Your Workout by Jason Benneto Circuit 38 Noize Circuit 39 Noize Republican Pick-Up Lines by Dennis Fleming You meet a guy at a party, and the two of you seem to have a great connection. But during the conversation, he drops a bomb that leaves you dazed and confused. “I’m a Republican,” he states in a rather matter-of-fact tone. At first you want to run away faster than George Bush from the truth. But you haven’t been laid in over a month and he seems really into you. So you hide your bewilderment and respond, “Really? I’ve heard of such a thing, but I never believed it.” After some back and forth bantering and a little more flirting, you need a line to seal the deal or send him packing. Here are a few that could accomplish both… Circuit 44 Noize • If you’re into role playing, we could go back to my place. I’ll be George Bush and you’ll be my bitch, Tony Blair. • After sex, I’ll show you my private photo collection of Nancy Reagan wearing Adolfo. • I was a cheerleader at Yale just like George W., but I can squat on a megaphone better than he ever could. • You know, in this light, you remind me of a young Karl Rove, and I just love the bald, chubby, dishonest type! • Once we get back to my place, I’ll do to you just what your friends have been doing to mine over the last five years. • I have always believed that Condoleeza Rice wears Chanel much better than Madeline Albright. • I have no problem being the bottom. Since I live in Florida, I’ve been screwed many times by George W. and Jeb at the same time. • I have been thinking about switching parties. If you go home with me, I may just let you flip me. • I’d love to see for myself if Republicans are as good at manipulating in bed as they are in the media. • I’ve always said that our political parties need more bipartisan activities, and you going down on me would be a great start! • Isn’t your party’s mascot the elephant? How about we go back to my place, and you show me how many nuts you can pick up with your trunk? Circuit 45 Noize THE EARS HAVE IT …you never know who’s listening! “She ain’t that prime of beef!” “Oh, she ain’t prime beef at all... she’s spare ribs!” “How old are you?” “44” “Wow! I’m only 19. How many times does 19 go into 44?” “Just as many times as it wants to.” “It’s so hot, I’m sweating like Whitney Houston in customs!” “I love how I look after a good six-hour dick suck – it‘s like getting great collagen injection.” Circuit “I spent a month on Fire Island one weekend and that was enough!” 50 Noize “She’s having a pool party? Child, with her friends, there will be more people falling out than falling in.” “The end of that relationship almost destroyed me. Manhunt was my rebound.” “The DJ had me shaking it like a baby that wont stop cryin’!” “Who is he and why is he here? You met him online, didn’t you?” “Look at the body on that one!” “We could both climb all over it and never meet each other!” “Oooh, I could put a ring on his finger.” “I’d rather put a finger in his ring…” “If his jeans were any lower-rise, they’d be socks!” “That one’s like a Monet. Cute from far, far from cute!” Submit your own “Overheards” to us at [email protected] Circuit 51 Noize Circuit Ass by Michael Talley The theme was “South of the Boi-dor” at the Black Party earlier this year. There were chickens in cages all over the place and a Mexican guitar player at the door as you entered. Next to the guitar player was a miserable looking donkey. What we didn’t know then was that the donkey was only miserable because he wanted to lose the guitar player and get out to the dance floor. You see, this wasn’t just any donkey. This was Circuit Ass. We caught up with him later that morning and assked him some questions. So, are you into boys or donkeys? Hey Circuit Ass! Love ass, honey. Uh huh. haAAAYYYyy. Who are your favorite DJs? How long you been on the scene? Kimberly Ass and Susan Moraburro HAAAYYY! Favorite song? Huh? Shakin’ that ass, shakin’ that ass... Hay. My cousin founded DNKY long before Miss Donna changed her last name to “New York”. No way! I witnessed Tigger’s crash. You can’t be serious. What was the beef you had with Eddie Murphy about? Oh, for sure. How could you think that all that energy was natural? Don’t talk to me about beef. Cows are fucking boring. One bump and they tip over. But regarding Eddy I was just pissed that I didn’t get that part in Shrek. Top or bottom? Simultaneously versatile. Your favorite sex act? Excuse me? Haven’t you ever seen one of those pictures of a girl sucking a donkey dong? We’re big! When I find another hot piece of ass we can both be tops and bottoms at the same time. It’s fabulous! Pin the tail. Boxers or briefs? Depends. The mind just spins... Snort, smoke, or slam? Circuit 55 Noize The Other Circuit Boy by Jonathan T. White I tried to conform to the Circuit boy mold. I really did. But after spending many frustrating and unhappy evenings trying to enjoy the parties in the usual fashion - dancing all night long - I finally realized that I needed to be true to myself and follow my own path. Once I dispensed with the selfcreated stereotype of how the Circuit ought to be enjoyed, new and powerful experiences became possible for me. Rather than spending my time on the dance floor, I started lounging, wandering through the non-dance floor spaces, and people-watching. As someone with no rhythm, I felt like an outsider on the dance floor. Now I feel in. Previous eras have labeled the wallflower a non-participant and relegated him to folding chairs on the sidelines. The Circuit, however, embraces the alternative participation of the wallflower and for him has created the “haute lounge.” These lounges are often furnished with cozy couches placed in arrangements that encourage conversation and connection with others. The haute lounge has many variations – some have views of the dance floor, others are more secluded; some share the full exposure to the music, others are quieter or feature a more mellow mix. These are the spaces where Circuit I finally learned to fully enjoy my Circuit experience. My friends share my love of the lounge - at the start of the evening, anyway. We always look for the chill room when we enter a space. We like to start out our evening sprawled around in this comfortable setting. When my friends’ pills begin to hit, they waste no time with a long farewell. Their evening is off and running as they rush to the dance floor. It’s funny how different body chemistries react, because I never really feel the need to unseat myself. When my pill hits me the hardest, I often slouch further into the nice soft couch where I’ve set up shop. At first, it hurt when my friends called me a Circuit wallflower. But I’ve never really let other people tell me how to act. Eventually, they learned to accept our differences. Each of us has found a way to enjoy the aspects of a party that we find most attractive and we’re all the happier for it. In the process, I’ve learned that I’m not alone – there are others out there who share my party sensibilities. 60 Noize For most partygoers, the fun is all about the chance to commune with one another on the dance floor. You might think that a Circuit party with little time spent on the dance floor would be boring. But we wallflowers are actually not outsiders at all. We simply choose a different kind of experience. In fact, I often meet just as many people as my friends who spend their evening on the dance floor. Some people find the quiet, unengaging loner to be very attractive. Some of the people I meet are simply seeking respite from a two-hour stint on the dance f l o o r, w h i l e others are dedicated lounge lizards like me. I don’t choose t h e lounge over the dance floor because of the social possibilities. I enjoy the time that I spend in the solitude of my own head. The frenetic energy of the party passing around me is the perfect setting for me to reflect and dream. Sometimes these mental wanderings have served as a crucial time to resolve personal issues. It wasn’t too long ago that my boyfriend and I had our biggest and most intense argument. Our relationship was truly in jeopardy, but by the end of the week we had analytically and rationally solved Circuit our conflict. However, it wasn’t until a week later, while lounging at a party, that I was able to truly forgive him and begin the emotional resolution of our issues. For me, this kind of emotional healing would not have been possible while being jostled on the dance floor. My other favorite party activity is people-watching. People-watching is my play. Passersby make small dancelike movements in their step. Friends greet one another with exaggerated gestures or sympathetic affection. A boy in the cor ner spontaneously demonstrates his silliest moves. In this environment, I feel a sense of solidarity, a connectedness of the heart with the people around me. My friends describe the same kinds of feelings as a part of their dance floor experiences. I let my thoughts rest as I scan the crowd. I’m still in awe of the number of people who have found what I have found – this beautiful state of being. And in that state, I sometimes just drift, so the party becomes the backdrop and not the focus. There is something magical about this place we call the Circuit, even for me – something about this place that stirs my intellectual and emotional depths. And all I want to do is lay back and take it all in. 61 Noize Exercism by D. Michael Taylor My idea of exercise is a good brisk sit. ~Phyllis Diller Walking up Eighth Avenue one day recently, I found myself stuck behind a giant. With shoulders bulging beyond the limits of most mere mortals and back muscles straining the fibers of his large white t-shirt, I quickly drew out my camera phone to snap a photo of this phenomenon. I felt as if there needed to be some sort of evidence that this Shrek-like creature actually existed. I showed some of my friends, and they either shrugged or quickly exclaimed, “He’s hot!” While I have no doubt that this type of exaggerated frame is appealing to many gay men, it does very little for me. But it did Circuit get me thinking about where I fall on the fitness spectrum. Despite the fact that I write for a magazine devoted to the Circuit, my body type falls more naturally into the waifish “writer” category. I don’t harbor any sort of jealousy or animosity toward my gym-loving friends. On the contrary, I find their devotion to health and physical beauty rather inspiring in a detached way, much like I find the courage and heroism of firemen inspiring without actually wanting to become one of them. 62 Noize Out of curiosity, I googled the phrase “gay gym culture” and was surprised to find that there are some rather negative nellies out there with some rather pointed opinions on this topic. Even back in 1996, when gym culture was really digging its heels into our culture, a dour Ian Barnard wrote that prizing the buff body was “homophobic, as well as sexist, racist, classist, ableist, weightist, and looksist.” It’s quite possible that poor, bitter Ian was traumatized on the playground one too many times as a child. A more nuanced take on the issue is found in a 2001 article by Chelsea psychotherapist Michael Shernoff, who worries that “working out can become an unhealthy obsession that’s facilitated by a distorted body image, regardless of any initially Circuit healthy reason behind the interest in fitness.” So, if you, like me, need a good excuse to stay away from the gym, there isn’t a shortage of them. Just get used to being invisible in a gay bar. I belong to a gym, like any corporate New Yorker, but my best friend and gym bunny extraordinaire Rami likes to joke that I end up paying about forty dollars per visit, as they happen rather infrequently. Forty dollars for the privilege of spraining my entire body for the next three days. Good times. Yeah, I’m one of those lazy assholes who works out once a month and then complains loudly about it. I’m skinny, so I’ve tricked myself into thinking I can ‘get away with it’. But once you pass 30, you realize that you still need to keep things as tight as possible while gravity does its thing. But honestly, it’s just such a damn chore. You have to take an entirely separate bag of nasty workout clothes with you to work. Then 63 Noize instead of having a much-needed cocktail after a brutal day at the office, you have to trudge up to the 15th floor of a midtown hotel, change your clothes in the funk of a school gym atmosphere, then expend energy you don’t really have figuring out how all of the confusing machines work. It’s just too much for a busy girl on the go to handle sometimes, y’know? aged waif with no shoulders. But I have a dastardly plan. I’ll go twice a day, fueling up on a low-carb diet and studying the body, chiseling myself into a mean machine capable of destroying the pain that they wish to inflict on me. Then the last laugh will be mine. Oh, yes. I’m kidding, of course. I know how some of the machines work. But I hate them. They are like silent, evil robots, intent on harming my body. But I’m smarter than they are. I know where they live. And I know they can’t leave. The only perk at the end of the torture session is hoping that a cute guy will cruise you in the steam room. But guess how many times that happens to someone who goes to the gym once a month? Oh, I get cruised – by men who get the same look from me as the one I get from the guys I actually want to have sex with. It’s a vicious food chain in the steam room – everyone is so busy looking at people hotter than themselves that no one gets any dick. In the end, I’ll have to bite the bullet and start going more than once a month. I know that. The evil robots are waiting for me, licking their chops. But gravity is starting to win, and if I lose my slim body then I won’t ever get any attention. No one wants to sleep with a slightly pudgy middle- Circuit 64 Noize Promoter Spotlight: Mark Baker rest is history. I’ll always be indebted to Abel for the consistent performances he has put in at Colosseum. Did you produce other events before Gay Disney? Before I started producing the parties, I had worked in Disney Live Show Production and then started art directing national television commercials and television shows in Orlando at the Universal and Disney Studios. How did you get started promoting events? We did the late-night parties at TGI Friday’s Front Row during Gay Days in 1998. Between the two nights, we had 1,200 people and I was amazed so many people showed up. The DJs were David Knapp and Rick Mitchell. The next year, we added the Colosseum party with Abel at the Hard Rock. Their stage setup is state-of-the-art, so the shows just blew people away. The sound and lighting were excellent. And Abel’s performance was amazing. The Circuit To what do you attribute your success? I’ve been in the entertainment business long enough to be realistic that “being in the right place at the right time” had something to do with it. But another part has to be that I work really hard on all the projects I do – whether it’s parties, television commercials, special events, benefits, etc. Don’t underestimate the power of liking what you do and working hard to do it well. Your shows are the best in the business. Are you the one behind these creations? Awww... that’s sweet. 66 Noize The shows are the part of the events that I’ve always been the most excited about. I’m always glad when all the contracts are signed, advertising is finalized, and venues are locked down so we can start working on that part of the event. The great thing about doing the parties once a year was that it gave me the chance to walk away for a time. I worked on other projects, went to see other special events, to see shows, and then I brought everything I’d lear ned to the following year’s events. Circuit Here’s Circuit Party Show 101: 1. Shows shouldn’t be over 8 minutes long. You’d better have something really amazing if you want to go longer. 2. The music should never stop. Mix into and out of the show music. 3. Live vocals or performers: proceed with extreme caution! 4. It’s all about eye candy. 67 Noize Why did you sell your Orlando Gay Days events to Johnny Chisholm? I was getting the feeling that I had done the parties as best I could. To keep reinventing the wheel was becoming challenging. I love what I do and I love doing it well. When I’m not absolutely sure I can keep producing parties with a fresh idea then I think I should move on to other projects. Do you plan to continue to do events? I’m talking to different people about producing main parties for their party weekends. Sometimes all the elements of a party come together beautifully: the crowd shows up, the music and lights click, the shows work. Your party is the place to be. What does it feel like to look out over one of your stellar events? It’s a great feeling when everything “clicks”. I try to take a moment to enjoy it. But with all the success I’ve enjoyed, I have to say that it has a lot to do with all the people that have worked with me. Having an idea is one thing – but you need really bright, talented people around you to make it all happen. So if everything “clicks” - it really is the result of a great group effort. Circuit So to all the DJs, event managers, lighting designers, choreographers, costumers, performers, pyrotechnics, and on and on… that I’ve been lucky enough to work with - you guys rock! And I’m sure the best is yet to come! 68 Noize KATRINA Our hearts are with our brothers and sisters in the area of New Orleans. He has two very distinctive sounds that he uses for different kinds of parties. His after-hours sound gets down and sleazy, while his main event sound is more energetic and progressive. Paulo first started as a bedroom DJ in the 80s, and began spinning in clubs when he was only nineteen. His first DJ experience came about in Paris, where he spun at Le Studio and Le Palace. When he moved to LA, he got a residency at the after-hours party Spin. This after-hours developed a loyal following and became the springboard that launched Paulo’s career on the Circuit. Circuit 72 Noize His first big break for a large-scale event was in Palm Springs in 2001. Jeffrey Sanker had noticed his after-hours popularity at Spin and invited him to play at the White Party. He has since played a host of major events including recent appearances at Philadelphia’s Blue Ball, Montreal’s Red Party, NYC’s Saint at Large Black Party and Chicago’s Fireball. Paulo has also held club residencies at Roxy in New York and Mezzanine in San Francisco. H i s more recently released production work includes the Fireball Volume 3 CD on Centaur earlier this year, as well as several singles such as Inaya Day’s “Lift It Up” on Tommy Boy Records (which went to #1 on Billboard), Suzanne Palmer’s “Luv to Luv” on *69, Sheila Brody’s “You Ain’t That Good”, and the soon-tobe-released “Fascinated” also by Suzanne Palmer on *69. Paulo is co-owner, with Todd Dutkevitch, of a digital record label called Pure Music Productions. They distribute progressive dance productions on Beatport as well as other digital dance websites. Paulo describes his “ideal” party as one with a very sexy feel. He loves to use the sexy tribal grooves and vocal tracks that he has in his stash. The crowd at this party would be a combination of men and women – and who are there for the music, not because they’re looking to get laid! Paulo credits his unique sound as one of the reasons for his success. Not only does he produce his own tracks that cannot be heard anywhere else, but he also works closely with other producers such as Ralphi Rosario, Jamie J Sanchez, Angelo Kortez, and Alexander, who provide him with tracks not available to the general public. In the midst of all the European CD exports I’m exposed to, the grading curve is decidedly higher and impressing me is not so easy. The Beat Freak label is one that boasts a sound and intention unique to most and that panache is flaunted without defect in this unmixed, single-disc sampler. In a way, this is kind of the D-Formation show, their name appears as both artist and remix credits a total of five times over this disc’s 11 tracks, but there’s still plenty of variety throughout. All tracks are Circuit stompers, but there’s also a breezy quality that appears on the majority of the tracks. It’s like a summer evening innuendo, that Circuit takes varied forms such as a few bars of naked guitar, luxuriously extended breaks coupled with string chords, salsa percussion and jazz elements. What caught my attention immediately about this compilation were the first two tracks, “Freshness” by Simon & Shaker featuring Africa on vocals, and “Wait For Me” by Asle featuring Frost. Both are gorgeous, full-vocal house tracks that instantly inspire even within the first few 8-counts. “Wait for Me” held special significance for me as I had this huge crush on someone at the time and it was my new mantra, so if you’ve popped some feelings, or even just a woody, over someone who doesn’t even realize it and you can’t bring yourself to just say it, this song will provide the soundtrack to your mental state. Welcome home. Another immediate attraction to most will be the D-Formation makeover of Tony Moran & Deborah Cooper’s recent cover of the Circuit classic “Live You All Over.” This is Circuit house with a lot of soul, so if the party tunes of late have been leaving you feeling a bit vapid, maybe a move to Spain is the answer to fill your void. Or if you’re cheap, you can just buy this compilation and play it while your next Circuit hook-up is filling something else. If you happen to hook up with a Spaniard, then you’ll simultaneously be experiencing the country inside and out. It’s not casual sex, it’s an injection of culture. 88 Noize A State Of Trance The Collected 12” Mixes Armada Music So stunningly beautiful, it simultaneously makes you want to break down and cry while smiling up at the sky. I recently heard someone say, after listening to Paul van Dyk’s The Politics of Dancing 2 (another recent standout trance release), that if gay clubs would start playing trance music again he’d probably be going out a lot more. I felt so affirmed. It’s not that I don’t love the vocal diva house and dark tribal that gets played at parties, but there’s something about trance being mixed in that really adds to the musical atmosphere. It’s like the difference between the way vision and smell register in the brain. House has this hard, commanding presence that registers in the ears the same way a tight, tanned torso above ass-hugging, lowrise jeans registers in the eyes – it’s instantly delicious. Trance, on the other hand, drifts into the ears and stirs you inside, the same way cologne mingled with a man’s body chemistry does as it wafts past a few seconds after he walks Circuit by. Trance doesn’t slap you around and force you into submission like house does. But if you play a more active role and really let it in and let it affect you, you get this total out-of-body feeling that just submitting to house can’t provide. Are all Circuit boys passive music bottoms that need the beat to take control and do to them what it will? Getting back to the CD at hand, the tracks are all unmixed, all full-length and mostly non-vocal. This two-disc set contains some of the most stellar trance I’ve heard in years, most of which was previously only available on 12” vinyl. And aside from a couple typos in the track listing, this compilation is completely immaculate in its conception and execution. And while everything on here is amazing, I have to give special attention to what I consider one of the most beautiful “happy trance” anthems I’ve ever heard, Robert Nickson’s “Spiral,” finally available in its entirety after all its appearances on a billion trance mix CDs. Then for “sad trance” anthems, I’m torn between “Time To Say Goodbye” by Envio, which contains a gorgeous aching break in the middle, and “Come Around Again,” the only vocal track on the album featuring Anita Kelsey, which depicts the lapping angst of post-breakup energy with such brutal accuracy that I have to wince every time I play it. If this music is your kinda thing, also look for the recent Trance Power compilations and the now-scarce Daniel Bruns presents Eye Trance compilations, all are unmixed and full-length trance. Yummy. 89 Noize Buy these releases and all your other dance music favorites at Perfectbeat. com. Power: NYC Tribal Afterhours Mixed by The Gionfriddo Brothers Kult Records Everyone always heralds Peter Rauhofer as the epitome of dark, sexy Circuit house, but after hearing this new release from Kult Records, Rauhofer sounds like a bright, sunny day full of chaste, skipping children. I’m not knocking Peter - I’d be his man-slave if he showed even mild ambivalence towards me in passing, but I just had to make it clear how much I’m feeling this CD. You see, there are two approaches to after-hours music - either you (the DJ) play completely mindless, lead-heavy drivel while getting sucked off by the hottest drone present because you know your crowd is so far inside their own heads via enough powdered substances to equal the contents of a medium-sized desert, or you get all crazy creative and artistic with your set because you know that this crowd is a deliciously unique one that isn’t expecting you to just play the hits. In this case, their presence there during this no-man’s time zone gives you the motivation and encouragement to create a musical experience that complements the inimitable Circuit quality of these early morning hours. This is the time when omnipresent vocals are no longer necessary, and are even unwelcome as they tend to overly complicate the already inwardlyintimate, lust-laden intoxication that innately fills every crevice of your mind in this kind of environment. Instead, words, spoken or sung, become suggestions and orientation coordinates by which to navigate and experience this beat-governed carnal atmosphere that encompasses your body. Now take all that and spread it across 12 continuously-mixed tracks and then throw in two bonus tracks including a new mix of Abigail’s still-to-becommercially-released single “Song Bird” and a Gionfriddo Brothers mix of Dynamix’s “Revolution and Rise” with vocals by Miss Michie, and you, papi, have the soundtrack to either a walloping Saturday night party or an equally walloping session of horizontal mattress dancing with your most recent conquest. 90 Noize Party Groove: Soakin Wet 2 Mixed by David Knapp Centaur I was so nervous when I saw this CD appear on the shelf. The first Soakin Wet volume was such a stand-out, truly one of the top 5 mix CDs of summer 2004. And it is usually in the midst of towering prestige like that when the sophomore slump hits hardest and yields a follow-up album that’s as weak and disappointing as a drunken, flaccid penis after being promised all Saturday night while out at a bar that this same anatomy was gonna fuck you in half if you’d just come home with it and its owner. Too late, you realize you should have just gone home alone and had your own little party of five and called it a night. In this case, however, you can leave your Beat Viagra at home -- on a scale of 1 to 10, David Knapp has created a true 12-incher. Boasting the same wealth of celebrated remix producers and emerging artists as the first along with a handful of superstar vocalists, Soakin Wet 2 drenches with a musical luster that sweats Circuit bliss between the fingers of your raised hands, all through your hair, and down Circuit your grinding body. The album begins with significant repute by way of Jody Watley reclaiming her strength in “Looking For A New Love” mixed by Chus & Ceballos, but then quickly goes in a cheeky camp direction with tracks like “Le Freak” covered by GTS and circuited by none other than Chris Cox, and sassy “Quick Fix” with vocals by Ceevox and remixed by Twisted Dee. Tribal moves in the for kill next with the pulse-elevating “Tobasco” by DJ Fist (I know, right?) and Peter Presta’s artist track “The Latin Express” mixed by Tribal Spain celebrity Jesse Garcia. These are followed by a pair of respectdemanding power tracks “As I Am” by Deepa Soul mixed by Mike Cruz and “Ain’t No One” by Filth E & The Rage mixed by DJ Dave Hansen and David Knapp himself. Victor Calderone then comes back into the spotlight with a remix of “Low Frequencies” by Chus & Ceballos vs. Richie Santana only to have the lime stolen back with David Knapp’s sweltering 2005 Latin/tribal makeover of Funky Green Dogs’ “Reach For Me.” Vernessa Williams then continues the same precedent of energy and vocal vigor established by “Took My Life” with the follow-up “Accept Me,” mixed by Junior Vasquez, which leads into another stand-out debut track, “Shout,” from R&B-turned-vocal-house-diva, Sisaundra, by way of Norty Cotto production. The album closes with another Knapp 2005 remake that answers its own question with all the amazing that came before it, “Could It Be Magic” by Vic & Chicola. David Knapp may have been in the Circuit scene for decades, but no supplementation is necessary for him to get it up. Knapp’s party rocks it hard and strong on demand long after the last bleary-eyed Circuit boy wanders off the dance floor and out into the midmorning sun. 91 Noize THE "MANNY LEHMAN" DJ Manny Lehman stops in regularly to visit Wes Foran, and the guys at the Powerzone in West Hollywood to juice up on this delicious nutritious protein shake which was created especially for him. New events include a gay-celebrity volleyball tournament on the beach, a champagne afternoon fashion show, a gay-celebrity discussion and roast sponsored by The New York Times, and a Big Band event (yes, you read that right). Returning to blow the lid off of Miami’s famed clubs and beaches are White Heat, the Heatwave pool party, and the venerable Muscle Beach party at Ocean Drive and 12 th. Susan Morabito returns to spin her famed Sunday morning party at Crobar – doors open at 8:00am. The crown jewel of AIDS fundraisers, The White Party at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is the event that makes this weekend over-the-top special. At Vizcaya the crowd is as much a part of the show as anything else, with 3000 beautiful people in white, many of them in costumes you simply won’t believe. With dancing under the stars, a food court of delicacies from some of Miami’s hottest restaurants, and ten acres of the most breathtaking renaissance gardens in the country, this is not your typical party. The exciting new addition this year is the White Party Village; created to accommodate the many divergent international and national guests into one 500-yard square block area on spectacular Ocean Drive. Host hotels include the Savoy, the Victor, The Hotel, The Raleigh, the Park Central and the Courtyard by Marriott. White Party Week is what other parties would look like if you wrapped them in mink, served champagne and invited Madonna (relax, it’s just an expression). You can practically hear the flashbulbs now, can’t you? And it’s all for a good cause, too - the whole week benefits Care Resource, Florida’s one source for HIV/AIDS services. The California boys are pulling out all the stops… Are you ready? There’s something for everyone - so you get to decide! On Friday, DJs Offer Nissim and Peter Rauhofer are spinning your Last Dance of 2005 at Circus Disco, while over at the Mayan, Resolution has DJ Abel tearing it up for the first time since his debut there on Memorial Day. Saturday night, Masterbeat and Atlantis Events join forces to bring you the big spectacular New Year’s Eve bash at the world famous Hollywood Palladium. Since opening in 1940 with Frank Sinatra, the Palladium has been home to the Grammys, the Emmys, and has hosted legendary concerts with classic artists such as the Rolling Stones, The Who, and now - Deborah Cox! That’s right - the one and only dance diva and Broadway star starts the party off with a once-in-a-lifetime hour-long concert, performing her incredible lineup of #1 club hits with her live band and dancers. After the concert, DJ Manny Lehman takes control of the turntables and turns the 40,000 square foot Palladium into the largest and most decadent nightclub in the world. You should take an hour to stop home and re-fabulize, but of course you’ll go back out! DJ Phil B will be lighting up the Hollywood Arena while DJ Paulo presides over the Resolution after-hours at the Henry Fonda Music Box. Sunday night (no, seriously, there’s more), it just isn’t a proper New Year’s Day unless you watch the sun go down the same way you saw it come up - from a dance floor - DJ Brett Henrichsen, Avalon, Recovery, the closing party, produced in association with John Brady... ‘nuff said. First, Gus presents Colossus New Year’s weekend in San Francisco. So much for the widely held notion that Friday night parties are the tamest of the weekend! This one starts with one of those now-infamous underwear parties, so get over yourself already and lose the Levi’s. DJ Joe King spins the soundtrack for the ensuing debauchery. Ring in the New Year the next night with DJs Roland Belmares and Alexander at the Gift Center Pavilion, with Suzanne Palmer performing live! Things get downright cozy at 1015 Folsom as your year begins with a night of t-dance madness, featuring massage, treats and munchies, movies, and a very cozy bean bag room! No sound says “celebration” like the popping of champagne corks (you heard one just now, didn’t you?) Come pop one yourself as the New Year is rung in, at gPop - amazingly festive and energetic without being excessively chaotic or expensive. Each year, g lounge is beautifully decorated in sapphire balloons and silver streamers. The shirtless bartenders sport bow ties and serve Circuit 101 Noize WINTER CIRCUIT 2005 a complimentary champagne toast at midnight to mark the occasion! There’s also a five-story theater, an authentic 50s diner, a world-class casino, a spectacular three-story dining room and a nightclub called The Dungeon (exactly who is running this ship?). There’s also complimentary 24-hour room service, although, with all that’s going on up on deck, including exotic ports of call like Cozumel and Belize City, if you’ve chosen to spend 24 hours in your stateroom, it’s likely that food is not high on your list of essentials. Atlantis will turn the Navigator’s outdoor decks into the largest outdoor celebration ever at sea, with spectacular lighting, lasers to light up the sky, and concert quality sound. And the high-tech nightclub hosts a wide range of musical styles, and a sensational after-hours scene. All of this featuring six of the leading DJs working today. So it’s no surprise that, after some queen walking down 8th Avenue was heard exclaiming into her phone, “...freezing my Gucci-covered tits off!” one of the most venerable events on the Circuit was born in Miami Beach. This year, the weekend benefits the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force with an all-star roster of DJs including Abel, Phil B, Joe Gauthreaux, Warren Gluck, Chad Jack, Manny Lehman, Robbie Leslie, Tony Moran, Peter Rauhofer, Kimberly S and Tracy Young, beckoning you to a long weekend of parties in the city’s famous nightclubs and, perhaps most importantly, the spectacular white sandy beach. Mammoth is now the third most visited ski resort in the country, and with the Village at Mammoth and the new Westin, your lodging options are unlimited. Elevation weekend is famous for the lack of attitude and friendly atmosphere, mixed into world-class parties and hundreds of hunky boarder boys. Circuit 107 Noize WINTER CIRCUIT 2005 March 18-26, 2006 WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE - Miami, Florida Most guys on the gay party Circuit are probably only peripherally aware of the WMC as something that happens near the Winter Party, think it’s only for straight people, and have never gone out of their way to attend - which is a mistake. We actually have a lot in common with the straight party world. And as “electronic dance events” continue to come under fire from top levels of our government (“RAVE Act,” anyone?), we shouldn’t forget that our Circuit parties fall under this heading and the people at events like the Miami WMC are our allies in the fight to make sure our little subculture continues to be allowed to thrive. The conference is spread out over 9 days, which includes two weekends, and a dizzying array of parties, concerts, and club events; as well as awards presentations, symposia, and discussions. The opening event, the Ultra Music Festival, is a 14 hour show featuring over 200 artists / DJs / producers and 1 million watts of sound on 12 stages (two main stages and 9 specialty areas including: Electro, House, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Progressive, and Florida Favorites, among many others). The artist roster reads like a who’s who: The Chemical Brothers (DJ Set), Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Sasha, John Digweed, Rabbit in the Moon (live), Erick Morillo, Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman, Way Out West (live), Ferry Corsten, Pete Tong, The Rapture (live), Swayzak (live), Junkie XL (live), LCD Sound System (live), Adam Freeland, Sander Kleinenberg, and dozens of others. Even if you’ve never been to this event, you can bet your favorite DJs have. This is where much of the music you’ll be hearing for the next year at the parties gets showcased. Other parties have a bit of folklore, but this annual, one-night event (no “weekend passes,” no “host hotels” here) has legends. The infamous ritual circumcision (“Right there on stage!”) never happened, but the fact that everybody thinks it does is a testament to the dark, swirling energies created at this party and the effect it has on people. Held every year on the weekend of the Vernal Equinox, the Black Party asks you to reach deep down and confront yourself on your most primal level, to take part in the ancient tradition of banishing evil and celebrating the return of the sun and the new birth of spring. Sweat, lust, leather, and throbbing beats give way to soaring spiritual release. In recent years, this party has showcased some spectacular exercises in the lost art of morning music. Also this weekend is the sixth rendition of Alegria Xtreme. With music by Abel and the sweetest, most succulent flesh in the city gathered at Crobar, this one is definitely a crowd pleaser. Differing somewhat from the spring break weekends you had in college, this one will lack such things as, say, the fraternity brothers you secretly had the hots for and that annoying chick, Tiffini, (or whatever), you were pretending to date. In their places will be thousands of hot guys from all over the country and a roster of parties that includes Disco Inferno on Friday night, Rosabel (DJs Ralphi Rosario and Abel) at the White Party main event on Saturday, the Climax after-party with DJ Paulo and, of course, everybody’s favorite Sunday afternoon, the Sunset Tea with Kimberly S. ________________________________________________________________________ April 16, 2006 BUNNIES ON THE BAYOU - Houston, Texas Bunnies on the Bayou will be celebrating their 27th year in 2006.
