The Hershey Company and the Global
Shea Alliance
Ray Major
March 24, 2014
KEY MESSAGES
•
The Hershey Company will be an active and supportive
member of the Global Shea Alliance
•
We will look for synergies with and use lessons learned from
our cocoa sustainability programs
•
We will work with our supply chain partners to develop
programs on the ground that build capacity and support
community development through women’s education and
empowerment
•
In the food industry shea competes with other ingredients.
We must always design our programs to make shea more,
not less competitive with its alternatives
1
FIRST - A LITTLE ABOUT HERSHEY AND SHEA
• Hershey’s annual shea butter consumption is about 2,200
tonnes
• Shea butter is a component of cocoa butter equivalents
(CBE’s) used to make the white coating in Cookies’n’Crème
and other chocolate flavored coatings
• CBE’ represent about 2% of our annual ingredient spend
• CBE’s are either a blend of palm oil and shea or a blend of
palm oil and sunflower oil

HERSHEY AND SHEA
SUSTAINABILITY – OUR VISION
FORWARD
• The price of shea sustainability, like any ingredient, should be included in its
cost.
• We will look for synergies with our programs in cocoa
• We will work with our supply chain partners to develop on the ground
programs that build capacity and efficiency with focus on women’s education
and empowerment.
• We will look for Public and Private Partnerships that strengthen and improve
the transparency of the shea supply chain
19
HERSHEY AND THE GLOBAL
SHEA ALLIANCE
• Our expectation for GSA
• Provide a forum that can bring together all components of the
shea supply change
• Establish standards and guidelines that insure a sustainable shea
supply
• Independently verify that our programs are working
• Liaise with the governments of shea producing countries
• Initiate and/or administer public private partnerships when and
where they occur
• Be the voice of shea
