four players (Adam Steen, Aaron Heitzman,
Eric Lonnquist and Jason Cierlik) that were
drafted by major league teams and another (Chris
Rupert) signed a free agent deal. Two members of
the “Bowyer Brood” have advanced all the way to
the major leagues. Todd Revenig, who was drafted
and signed with Oakland in 1990, debuted with
the parent A’s in 1992 and reliever Gary Mielke
had a stint with the Texas Rangers.
With more than 900 career coaching victories, a
passel of conference titles and individual honors,
one might expect Minnesota State University,
Mankato baseball coach Dean Bowyer to begin
showing some signs of slowing down. Don’t bet
on it. Bowyer remains as exhuberant and energetic
as he always has as he embarks on his 34th season
of coaching collegiate baseball.
As one of the most respected baseball men in the
Midwest, Bowyer stands sixth on the NCAA Division II active coaches wins lists with 948 victories.
He ranks eighth on the all-time list.
Under Bowyer, MSU baseball teams have played
in NCAA post-season competition 18 out of his
29 years at MSU, and have won at least 30 games
in 19 out of those same 29 years.
Bowyer has always been able to find the best
college talent in Minnesota and surrounding states
and nurture it into championship-calibre teams.
During Bowyer’s 28-year tenure as MSU’s
coach, the Mavericks have captured a total of 19
league championships - three when MSU was in the
Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and an
incredible 16 in the North Central. As mentioned,
MSU has made it to the NCAA post-season party
18 times under Bowyer, and three of those teams
made it all the way to the NCAA Division II College
World Series. The most recent CWS trip came in
1986 when the Mavericks racked up a 35-15 wonloss mark and finished fourth at the Series. Other
CWS teams for MSU and Bowyer were in 1980,
when the Mavericks won a school-record 36 games
and took third, and in 1979, when MSU went 2622-1 and was ranked seventh in the nation.
Bowyer’s success has not been limited to
developing talented teams - he also develops the
talent. In addition to two All-America selections,
many all-region and all-conference picks, 41
Bowyer-produced players have signed professional
contracts. The 2002 team had an unprecedented

Backgrounding Dean Bowyer
Dean Bowyer received his B.S. degree in
physical education and elementary education from
Mayville State in 1966 and his Master’s from MSU
in 1971. Prior to working on his master’s, Bowyer
coached basketball and football at Barnesville,
Appleton, and Benson High Schools. He also
played professionally in the Baltimore Orioles
organization for three seasons and was an all-conference and all-district football player at Mayville
State, where he also played baseball and basketball.
Bowyer was inducted into the Mayville State
Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984 and built a 74-51
record in four years as head coach at Minot State
prior to joining MSU in 1977. Bowyer has been
named NCC Coach of the Year nine times during his
career and in addition to running his own baseball
camps during the summer. He also has served as
a consultant at several clinics.
The Ada, Minn., native and his wife, Cheri,
have two children, Shane (wife Laura, son Austin,
daughter Gabrielle) and Deana (husband Jerry, son
Jett, daughter Jersey).

Former South Dakota State standout Matt Magers
is in his sixth season as a member of the Maverick
coaching staff.
During his stint with the MSU pitching corps, the
Mavericks have had six hurlers sign pro contracts,
including second round draft pick Kevin Dixon and
20th-round draft pick Andy Kriedermacher off of the
2005 staff. MSU has led the NCC in earned run average twice (3.45 in
2005 and 4.73 in 2004), ranked second once (5.45 in 2003) and third
once (4.95 in 2002) during the last six seasons.
The Gaylord, Minn., native played collegiately at SDSU from 1994
through ‘97. A three-time all-conference pick, the left-handed Magers
was named the NCC’s Southern Division Top Pitcher in 1997. He was
drafted in the 16th round by the Chicago Cubs in 1997 and played for
two and a half seasons for Cub affiliates in Williamsport, Pa. (1997)
and Rockford, Ill. (1998).
Magers, who owns a master’s
degree in sports management
from MSU,served as an assistant coach for Mankato Mashers of the Northwoods League
during the 1999 season.

a year of experience, our hitting and defense

Last year’s team put together a 36-17 record and came within a
win or two of a NCAA bid. How close are we to putting together
another season like the one we had last year?
at third, short and second in his first two
seasons with MSU, hit .226 in his utility
role last year.
Coach Bowyer: We have enough veterans returning and quality new
players to have an opportunity to win an NCC Championship and a shot
at a regional bid. Many of these same players played on the Mankato
Twins team that won the Minnesota Class B amateur championship.
We have great depth in pitching but lost some power with 50 of the
record breaking 82 homeruns not returning.
Senior Dane Allen (.333, 8 HR, 38 RBI),
who saw action at first and DH in his first
season witih MSU last year, is pencilled in
as the starter at first and junior Pat Ottum
(.161, 1 Hr, 9 RBI), who heads into the
season as the team’s No. 1 catcher, drew
action in 26 games in 2005. Sophomore
Dan Woodall, who transfers to MSU
from UNC-Charlotte where he hit .200 in
15 games last year, will begin the season
backing up Allen and Ottum.
A two-time All-NCC First team selection, senior Matt
McMurtry has gone 18-5 with a 3.98 earned run average in three seasons with the Mavericks.
The speed of light and the weight of the
proton are but two of the recognized 20
Constants of the Universe. Maybe it’s time
scientists added a 21st to the list.
The Minnesota State baseball team went
36-17 last year in marking the 19th time in
the past 29 years the Mavericks have hit the
30-win mark in a season. That consistency
is a hallmark of the program and with the
bulk of last year’s squad returning, another
30-win season and postseason consideration should again be in the cards.
“This could be a special team,” said veteran
head coach Dean Bowyer. “If we stay
healthy and our players improve from a
year of experience, our hitting and defense
should be very good.”
Some shuffling in the infield is expected to
occur with junior Scott Kemp (.357, 3 Hr, 18
RBI, 7 steals, All-NCC First Team) moving
from second to short and senior Ryan Greene
(.326, 5 Hr, 36 RBI, 4 steals, All-NCC Honorable Mention) shifting to third.
“We’ve moved Kemp to short and Greene
to third to get Nick Gonzalez into the infield,” said Bowyer.
Gonzalez, a junior who has seen action

This year’s pitching staff is a good one,
boasting both depth and experience.
Senior southpaw Matt McMurtry (6-2,
2.53, 68 Ks, 67.2 IP), and two-time First
Team All-NCC and a First Team All-Region
pick last year, is a workhorse with career
numbers which rank highly in several MSU
statistical categories . Throw in three junior
righthanders in Ben King (2-0, 2.79, 14
Ks, 19.1 IP), Dane Secott (3-1, 4.54, 37
Ks, 41.2 IP), Mark Dolenc (4-1, 2.67, 39
Ks, 57.1 IP, All-NCC Honorable Mention)
and junior lefthander Jon Bjelland (5-0,
3.71, 39 Ks, 26.2 IP), along with former
JUCO standout Tyler Sander (16-2, 3.75
in two seasons at Iowa Central) and MSU
can claim a top six rotation equal to most
programs. Sophomore righty Nick Fellman
(4-0, 1.82, 39 Ks, 34.2 IP) and junior lefty
Jon Huber (1-0, 2.35, 21 Ks, 15.1 IP) give
the Mavericks a strong 1-2 punch out of
the bullpen
“Our strength is our pitching staff and that
is what wins games for you,” said Bowyer,
a 2006 inductee into the American Baseball
Coaches Hall of Fame.
McMurtry, Greene and Sudbeck are
serving as this year’s team captains and
the Mavericks enter the year ranking 28th
in the national preseason poll.
MSU is scheduled to kick-off the 2006
campaign with five games at West Georgia
beginning March 2.
Kevin Dixon was named the North Central Conference MVP last
year and was an impact performer as a hitter and pitcher. And after
being drafted in the fifth round, he signed with Cleveland. Where
does he rank amongst the all-time great players you’ve had here
during your MSU career?
Coach Bowyer: Kevin Dixon would have broken many team

since he had two years left. Only Fritz Polka was drafted higher so
Kevin is one of the top players to come out of MSU. He was ready for
professional baseball.
You’ve lost two position players from last year’s lineup....who
amongst the new players can we expect to emerge as impact
players this year?
Coach Bowyer: We expect Dan Woodall, a transfer from UNCCharlotte, to be one of our starting catchers, as well as playing some
first and providing some offense. Travis Taran, a left handed hitter will
play some at first and DH. Tyler Sander, was 10-0 last season with Iowa
Central, will give us another left-hander who knows how to win and
has pitched in the big games.
Amongst the returnees, who’s ready to make a move as a “go-to”
performer for us.
Coach Bowyer: I believe Ryan Greene will have a breakout year as
will veteran catcher Pat Ottum. I think with one more year experience
all the players will show improvement and consistency. Nick Fellman
will go from set-up man to closer this year; he had a great freshman
year and followed it up this summer pitching in the Northwoods
League with Eau Claire. Dane Secott, Mark Dolenc, Jon Huber, Jon
Bjelland, and Ben King are all junior pitchers who have pitched since
their freshman year. We look for them to use this experience and add
the depth to the pitching staff.

Coach Bowyer: 1. Sudbeck LF 2. Kemp SS 3. Greene 3B 4.
Allen 1B/DH 5. Woodall DH/C 6. Austvold CF 7. Kaus RF 8.

Given his production the past two years in which he’s put up
all-conference and all-region numbers, senior lefthander Matt
McMurtry is poised to make his mark on the MSU record books.
What does it mean to have someone like him as a member of our
pitching staff?
Coach Bowyer: McMurtry is not only our top pitcher but was voted
captain by the players for the second straight year. He is invaluable in
what he brings to our team. He is the go to guy and leads by example.
His make-up reminds me of the other great lefties we had a couple years
ago in Heitzman and Rupert. When those guys stepped on the hill you
knew you were going to get a quality start.
Do you have a potential rotation in mind and who will be your
closer?
Coach Bowyer: We have six potential starters in McMurtry, Dane
Secott, Mark Dolenc, Ben King, Jon Bjelland, and Tyler Sander. Jon
Huber and Nick Fellman will be closing the games. Our pitching is
definitely our strength and will keep us in games.
Talk about your schedule and it challenges.
Coach Bowyer: We start off in Georgia with West Georgia in a five
game series and then play two regional games against Concordia-St.
Paul in the Metrodome before leaving for our spring trip, which will be
in Fort Myers Florida this season. We have chosen to go to Florida over
Texas to get more competition against Division II teams. These trips
will allow us to find our pitching rotation and discover who some of our
role players will be as we enter our conference schedule.
How does the North Central Conference race stack up?
Coach Bowyer: The conference looks to be very balanced. We need
to get to prepared and focused each weekend.

Mavericks Finish 2005 With 36-17 Mark; Dixon Sets Season Home Run Mark and
Named 2005 North Central Conference MVP;
MVP; McMurtry First Team All-Region; Two
Mavericks Selected in MLB Draft
MSU finished second in the North Central Conference standings in 2005 with a 14-6
league mark and lost in the league postseason tournament championship game to regular
season champion Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks went 2-2 at the tournament, which
was hosted by Nebraska-Omaha.
About Head Coach Dean Bowyer: Head coach Dean Bowyer (Mayville State ‘66)
completed his 29th season at Minnesota State and his 33rd as a collegiate head coach.
Bowyer, who has led the Mavericks to 19 conference titles and is a nine-time NCC Coach
of the Year, owns a 874-439-7 (.665) mark in his tenure at MSU and stands 948-490-7
(.658) as a college head coach.
2005 Honors & Notes: The 36 wins by the 2005 Mavericks tied for the most victories
in school history and marked the 19th time a team has won at least 30 games in a season.
MSU baseball teams in 1980, 1996 and 2000 also won 36 games. The 2005 Mavericks
also shattered the school single-season home record with 76 dingers.
A pair of Minnesota State baseball players landed spots on the 2005 NCAA Division
II Central All-Region Team. Junior lefthanded pitcher Matt McMurtry (North Platte,
Neb.) was named First Team and sophomore first baseman/designated hitter Kevin Dixon
(Burnsville, Minn.) was named to the Second Team.
A two-time All-NCC First Team pick, McMurtry moved up to the All-Region First Team
after making the All-Region Second Team in 2004. Named the NCC Pitcher of the Week
April 12th, McMurty led the Mavericks in wins (6), starts (12), innings pitched (67.2) and
strike outs (68) this year. McMurtry sported a 6-2 won-loss record and ranked fourth on
the team with a 2.53 earned run average. His 18 career wins ties for fourth on the school’s
all-time list, he ranks eighth in career IP (163.2) and is 10th in career strike outs (142).
The 2005 North Central Conference MVP and a All-NCC First Team selection, Dixon led
the league in home runs and runs batted in and ranked second in batting average. In 49
games Dixon hit .377 and in addition to his school record 18 home runs, he knocked in 55
runs which ties for second on MSU’s all-time season list. The ninth MSU player to earn
league MVP honors, Dixon, whose 21 career homers ties for sixth on MSU’s all-time list,
was named the NCC Player of the Week April 18th. As a pitcher Dixon led MSU with a
1.17 earned run average and with 20 appearances, equalled the school record. His seven
saves ranks second on MSU’s all-time season list.
Senior rightfielder Landon Danelson (Great Falls, Mont.) was also selected All-NCC First
Team. Danelson, who spent two seasons with the Mavericks after transferring from Miles
City (Mont.) College, completed his senior season ranking first on the team in doubles (11)
and second in hitting (.367), home runs (9) and runs batted in (41).
Sophomore second baseman Scott Kemp (Council Bluffs, Iowa), another 2005 All-NCC First
Team pick, ranked fourth on the team in hitting (.357) and doubles (8). He also contributed
three homers and 18 RBI and was named the NCC Player of the Week April 12th.
Named All-NCC Honorable Mention were senior outfielder Kurt Beulke (White Bear Lake,
Minn., .306, 9 HR, 26 RBI), senior catcher Jim Bohmbach (Red
Wing, Minn., .364, 3 HR, 14 RBI), sophomore pitcher Mark
Dolenc (Eagan, Minn., 4-4, 2.67) and junior shortstop Ryan
Greene (Cambridge, Minn., .326, 5, HR, 36 RBI).
Gone, But Not Forgotten: Completing their MSU careers
were departing seniors Landon Danelson, Kurt Beulke,
Andy Kreidermacher, Jim Bohmbach, Matt McDonald
and Cullen Bahn.
Feeling the Draft: A pair of Minnesota State players were
chosen in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Junior pitcher/DH/1b Kevin Dixon, who was the 154th player
selected, became the 20th player in MSU Baseball history to
be selected in the draft and the first since an all-time high four
players were taken during the 2002 draft. And only catcher Fritz
Polka, who was selected by the New York Mets with the 42nd
pick in 1986, was drafted higher than Dixon. Senior righthanded
pitcher Andy Kreidermacher (Altura, Minn.) was selected by
the Colorado Rockies in the 20th round, 597th overall.

The North Central Conference
Representatives of colleges and universities in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota
met in the late fall of 1921 in Chicago
to consider the formation of what was
to become the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
There were representatives from nine institutions at the meeting: North Dakota
Agricultural College (now NDSU), the University of North Dakota, State University of
South Dakota, South Dakota State College, Morningside College, Des Moines Municipal
University, Nebraska Wesleyan, College of St. Thomas and Creighton University.
Shortly after the conference began, it met with some rough going with four members
withdrawing. Des Moines Municipal went first, dropping out after the 1926 season.
Nebraska Wesleyan severed relationships after the season of ‘27. In 1928, St. Thomas
and Creighton also became casualties, It was not until 1935 that Omaha University was
allowed to join the league. In 1936, Iowa State Teachers College (now Northern Iowa)
was admitted and in 1941, Augustana College of Sioux Falls was allowed to become
a member. Omaha withdrew in 1943, leaving the NCC membership intact until 1968: NCC Baseball Champions

At the fall meeting in 1968, Minnesota 1961 Northern Iowa

NCC Staff
Named as the sixth commissioner of the North Central
Conference in January of 2005, Roger Thomas (roger@nor
thcentralconference.org) is in his second year of guiding the
league. Thomas was Director of Athletics at the University
of North Dakota from 1999-2005 and currently serves on the
NCAA Division II Management Council. Prior to becoming
UND AD, Thomas served as the UND’s head football coach
for 13 seasons, leaving with more wins than any other UND
coach and a record of 90-49-2. Thomas was a runningback
and quarterback at Augustana College (Ill.), earning a bachelor degrees in physical education and history in 1969. He
earned a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota
in 1972. His coaching career began at Augustana College
(S.D.), and in 1976, Thomas was named head football coach
at University of Sioux Falls. After the 1979 season, Thomas
left and held assistant coaching positions at California State
University-Fullerton, University of Minnesota and with
the Toronto Argonauts before returning to North Dakota to
become the 23rd head football coach in 1986.
Now in her tenth year as Assistant Commissioner of the
North Central Conference, Melanie Nelson (melanie@n
orthcentralconference.org) is a 1993 Iowa State graduate.
Nelson was a member of the Cyclone track and field team
as an undergraduate. The Williamsburg, Iowa native earned
a master’s from the United States Sports Academy and prior
to her arrival at the NCC, taught and coached in Missouri
for eight years. She is a member of the NCAA Division II
Women’s Basketball Committee.
Jon Martin ([email protected]) became the
first full-time North Central Conference Director of Media
Relations in July of 1998. A Springfield, Mo., native and a
graduate of North Dakota State University, Martin owns a
master’s degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Prior to spending two years as a graduate assistant in the sports
information office at MSU, Martin also held SID internships
at Southwest Missouri State and ESPN. Martin spent the
summer of 1996 working as a member of the media relations
staff with the Atlanta local organizing committee for the
Summer Olympics and served as the venue press chief for
curling at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Kevin Dixon, who established a MSU
single-season record with 18 home runs,
became the ninth MSU player to be named
NCC Most Valuable Player when he
accomplished the feat last year. Dixon
led the NCC in home runs and RBIs and
ranked second in batting average. He was
named the NCC Player of the Week April
18th after hitting .571 (12-of-21) during
a seven-game span while scoring nine
times and driving in 16. He hammered
six home runs during that time in leading
the Mavericks to a 5-2 mark. As a pitcher
Dixon led MSU with a 1.17 earned run
average and with 20 appearances. His
seven saves ranks second on MSU’s
all-time season list.

with the Chicago Cubs (’57-’63).
An outstanding college football,
basketball and baseball player, Will
was inducted into the MSU Hall of
Fame in 1966 and ranked third on
MSU’s list of Male Athletes of the
Century.
Infielder Jerry Terrell (MSU ’65’68) saw action in 657 major league
games with the Twins (’73-’77) and
Royals (’78-’80). Terrell, who was
born in Waseca, Minn., was inducted
into MSU’s Hall of Fame in 1981.
