Come to the Wickford Town Beach (Rt. 1A) on Saturday April 30th and Sunday May
1st, from 10 ‘til 4 and find your perfect boat! Join us for a fun filled day test paddling

representatives will also be on hand. We will offer a variety of free mini seminars

Whether you are a “newbie” just getting your paddle wet, a
more experienced paddler looking to expand on your skills
or someone in between, The Kayak Centre offers an array of
instructional programs to get you and your boat on the water.
Teaching is the heart of our business and we love sharing our
enthusiasm for the sport with hundreds of paddlers that visit the
Centre every season—we’ve expanded our offerings and invite
you to join our exceptional instructors for a great day on the
water.

Essential Kayak Skills
Open Water Skills
Oceanplay 1
Building on the fundamental skills learned in Oceanplay 1, Oceanplay
2 focuses on more advanced strokes and a variety of rescue
techniques including T rescues, paddle float and unassisted rescues
performed in moderate conditions. This course will get you ready
for more advanced paddling techniques like rolling or advanced
paddling conditions. Discussion of wind, weather, waves as well as
safety concerns, hypothermia and basic first aid are also touched
upon. Basic stroke technique is refined and we introduce finesse
and combination strokes including edging, sculling, and hanging
draw are performed. Suitable for athletic beginners or those with
some prior kayak instruction. Ability to wet exit with a sprayskirt or
Oceanplay 1 is a prerequisite for the course.
The journey begins here! This is our full-day gateway course
to the sport of sea kayaking. Oceanplay I introduces essential
sea kayaking skills and safety to the beginning paddler. The
first half of the day will be spent on learning and refining
essential paddling strokes and the wet exit. Following lunch,
we’ll embark on a short paddle to practice newly acquired
skills and learn group and self rescues as well as bracing.
Other topics covered include the proper way to empty a boat,
launching, pre-paddle checklist and boat nomenclature. The
course is taught in calm, protected water and by day’s end
you’ll feel ready to head out on your own excursion!

Crossings, Rescues & Wind
Oceanplay 3
Oceanplay 3 introduces more advanced boat handling
skills in moderate conditions with wind and current. This
full day course is a must for any paddler looking to become
competent in on water navigation including using nautical
charts as well as performing rescues in conditions. Oceanplay
3 builds upon stroke technique to maneuver through rocky
shorelines and includes an open water crossing. High braces
and towing techniques are also covered. Oceanplay 1 and 2 or
equivalent experience is a prerequisite for this course, along
with discretion of the instructor. This course can be paired
with Oceanplay 2 for those looking to get their learning on the
fast track in a weekend.

The Kayak Centre offers a $25 discount on any Oceanplay
course with a full or mid-size kayak purchase from the
Centre and an additional $10 discount if the participant
brings their own equipment. Equipment should include

requirements. Participants should be at least 15 years of

Oceanplay 4
Are you looking to expand your kayak surfing skills into moving
water? This is the ideal course for you. This course introduces you
to safely paddling in the surf zone. Leaving the protected waters
behind, we’ll cover surf landings, wave formation and breaking surf
as well as surf zone etiquette and safety in this full day course. Using
mid or full size sea kayaks, we’ll show you the thrill of catching a
sweet one and riding it in! A confident wet exit and Oceanplay 1 or
2 is a prerequisite for this course

This course is designed for paddlers with open water experience
who are looking to expand those skills even further. Oceanplay
5 exposes you to tidal areas and rocky shorelines - a great venue
for practicing advanced boat handling techniques in rough water.
Topics include ferrying across current, landing in rocky shorelines,
breaking in and out of eddies and paddling along rock gardens.
Group communication skills, towing, rough water rescues and
other safety exercises are integral components of this course.
Oceanplay1, 2 and 3 or equivalent experience are prerequisites
for the course along with discretion of the instructor.

Quick Start
Essentials of Kayaking
Taught by Women for Women
Looking to get your feet wet and see if kayaking is for you? This half
day course will give you a great introduction to the fundamentals
of kayaking including boat entry and exit, basic paddling strokes
and safety on the water. Topics covered include, reverse and
turning strokes, entering and exiting as well as properly launching
your boat. This course can be taken in any type of kayak (sit on top,
mid size, recreational, or fullsize) and is a great way to try a boat
out on the water with instruction before purchasing. Prerequisites
are an open mind and a smile! If you’re looking to learn a bit more
than can be covered in a ½ day, we recommend taking a full day
Oceanplay 1 course.
We have found that women frequently enjoy learning in
the company of other women. If you’re anxious to get into
kayaking or want to brush up on your skills in a supportive
environment with other women paddlers, here’s your chance.
The content will be the same as our regular Oceanplay 1
course but is taught for women by women!

Tidal Play-Squirrelly Water
NEW
This course is designed for paddlers who are looking to
further expand their technical boat handling skills and enjoy
the adventure of paddling in flat but fast moving water,
“squirrelly water”. Rhode Island’s tidal ponds offer unique
experiences where these conditions are created by the
differential of incoming and outgoing tides. You will enjoy
great fun as your boat spins and twirls in tide rips.
Oceanplay 1, including bracing skills or equivalent
experience are prerequisites for this course

Looking to get your learning on the fast track in a weekend?
This is the ideal course for the athletic beginner who really
wants to push themselves or an experienced paddler
looking to brush up on their skills and learn some additional
technique. The content of this two day course is Oceanplay 2
and 3. Ability to wet exit with a sprayskirt or Oceanplay 1 is a
prerequisite for the course.

Sit On Top Surfing
Tired of flat water paddling or just want to try something
different? Kick it up a notch and give surf kayaking a try!
Narragansett Beach provides the perfect setting for sit on
top surfing, with a sandy beach for landings. No rolling
or previous kayak experience necessary, just a sense of
adventure! This course covers surf etiquette, landings,
reading waves and reentry. You’ll be hooked on kayak surfing
after giving it a try!

Coastal Tour Narragansett Bay
This is an open water tour following a scenic southerly
route once we depart Wickford Harbor. During our trip we
will explore North Kingstown’s various coves and beaches
including Bissell Cove, Rome Point and Fox Island. If you
have already enjoyed our Wickford Harbor Tour and want a
bit more adventure, this is the tour for you. Double kayaks are
used for this trip and participants must be at least 16 years

Newport Coastal Tour
We will depart from King’s Beach paddling along the beautiful
Newport coast seeing the mansions from an amazing vantage
point. Newport’s Ocean Drive offers some of Rhode Island’s
most spectacular scenery and you can take it all in from the
seat of one of our double kayaks. This is a don’t miss trip.
We will meet at The Kayak Centre at 9am for group travel

Jamestown Coastal Tour
We will depart from historic Fort Wetherill, with its’ 100 foot
high granite cliffs and travel along the rocky shoreline of
Jamestown with spectacular views of Newport Harbor, Fort
Adams and Castle Hill. This is a fun trip and offers not only a
great escape but a bit of adventure. Join us and take in some
of the best scenery that the East Bay has to offer. Double
kayaks will be used for this adventure and we encourage you

The waters around the Wickford area often provide a wonderful
opportunity to view harbor seals. Join us for this terrific
experience. In our double kayaks, we’ll get close enough to

Great Swamp Tour
This trip is an excursion into hidden jungle-like retreats that
cannot be reached any other way. We will float into a vast
state-owned management area on one river, paddle across a
shallow but wide pond, and then finish the trip on another river
that snakes its way through dense vine-draped vegetation.
Lunch will be enjoyed on a picturesque point jutting out into

Our guided harbor tours are the perfect way to get

experiencing the charm of historic Wickford Village.
Accompanied by one of our professional guides you’ll

Kayak Kamp
This is a 3 day non-residential paddling program designed
especially for youths aged 11 to 15. The three days are
intended to be fun, fun, fun while introducing kids to the

even have a chance to paddle some double kayaks during
the course of the program. Much like our Oceanplay for Kids,

Moonlight Paddle
Join us for an evening of paddling magic as we watch the
night sky come alive. What a terrific way to experience
the wonders of night kayaking under a full moon. The

Block Island with the Kayak Centre
Block Island is one of the best kept secrets in New England! This is a fabulous island off of
the coast of Rhode Island. We invite you to join us for a few days of kayak instruction at Block
Island. Our meeting place and venue will be the rustic Narragansett Inn on Block Island.
We offer two and three day workshops. All workshops include equipment, instruction,
and lunch daily as well as a group dinner following the first day of paddling. The two day
workshop including dinner is $350 and the three day workshop is $500. A group of rooms
will be held at the Narragansett Inn up until two weeks before the event. There is a two
night minimum at the Inn. Block Island is a busy place and lodging books quickly during

Workshop
Our Fast Track Workshops are ideal for any athletic
beginners who really want to push themselves a bit or
experienced paddlers who are looking to refresh their
skills and work on some additional technique. The content
of the two day workshop will be our Oceanplay 2 and 3
programs combined with a day trip along the rugged Block
Island coastline. You can take your paddling to whole new
level with an additional day on the water with us. The third
day will include a long open ocean paddle with a beach
landing.
This is a great workshop and a terrific way for women to
further discover paddling and leave their stress and busy
schedules behind while enhancing their skills. Over the years,
many participants have enjoyed this workshop and setting
so much that they have returned for a second or third time.
This two day program is taught by women, for women and
combines aspects of Oceanplay 1, 2 and 3 in a fun, supportive
learning environment.
If you don’t have the time to join us for multiple days on Block Island, sign up for the first day of any of our Block Island
workshops for $150. This includes equipment, instruction and lunch.

The Kayak Centre team is excited to announce that in the 2012 season we will be reintroducing our international travel packages.
We currently have working relationships with Blount Small Ship Adventures in the
Caribbean and Big Blue in Turks and Caicos both of whom can cater to a broad range
of paddler abilities, exploring off-the-beaten-path islands, reefs, mangrove forests and
river jungles. We have also done some exploratory trips for the Bocas del Toro area
of Panama and a trip which will offer a terrific mix of paddling and exploration in truly
spectacular Iceland.
