12 apiece after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Bears
went shot for shot with TJ, but
faltered towards the half and were
down 11.
In the second half, the Bears
fought hard and never gave up to
come back to make it an exciting
game. This was aided in Galena
outscoring TJ 43-30 in the second
half, and the pressure defense that
the Bears applied to TJ.
The Bears were led in scoring by Cameron Caulfield with
19 points. Caleb Hall was the
second leading scorer with 18
points. Also scoring for the Bears
was DeMarcus Walter with eight,

game. This was helped by the
Bears taking the game at one
possession at a time and being
patient.
During the second half, the Eagles came out firing and jumped
out to a lead of 28-26 in the third
quarter. The Bears were determined though. They did not give

Cadets Earn Awards
Pictured above on the left is C/SSgt. Joshua Green with Cadet Of The
Quarter award, and on the right C/TSgt. Lucas Lewis with the Cadet Of
The Year trophy.
The local squadron of Civil Air Patrol, Table Rock Lake Composite
Squadron 147 is called a composite squadron because it consists of
senior member and cadets.
Our squadron started off 2015 with three cadet members attending
Kansas Wing Winter Cadet Encampment from Dec 27, 2014, through
Jan. 3, 2015, at Kansas Wing Headquarters at the Joint Regional
Training Center in Salina, Kansas.
Cadets learned important life skills such as how to work in a group,
how to make their bed, how to keep organized and even how to manage time effectively. On top of learning about emergency services
and aerospace, cadets were exposed to numerous hands on activities
to stimulate their minds to aid in the learning process. Cadets walked
into the encampment as cadets and emerged a week later as leaders.
Cadet M/Sgt Annalise Russell, Cadet T/Sgt Lucas Lewis and Cadet
S/Sgt Joshua Green attended the encampment and Squadron 147 is
proud of each of them for their accomplishments.
Also at the Squadron meeting on January 8, 2015 Cadet Joshua
Green was honored with an award for Cadet Of The Quarter for the
3rd quarter of 2014. Congratulations to Cadet Green on earning that
recognition.
The 2014 Cadet Of The Year trophy was presented to Cadet Lucas
Lewis at the January 8th meeting. Cadet Lucas was selected for this
honor which was announced at the Christmas banquet in December,
but he was unable to attend due to being out of town at that time.
Congratulations to all of these outstanding young men and women
and we are looking forward to many good things from them in 2015.
The Missouri Wing of the Civil Air Patrol is composed of over
1,000 members organized in almost forty units located throughout
the state. Formal disaster relief and search and rescue training exercises are held on a regular basis several times each year. Civil
Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit
organization with more than 61,000 members nationwide, operating
a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs
90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as
tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and was credited
by the AFRCC (Air Force Rescue Coordination Center) with saving
54 lives in fiscal year 2011. Its volunteers also perform homeland
security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request
of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role
in aerospace education and serve as mentors to nearly 27,000 young
people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and also participates in Wreaths
Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the
sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.
Civil Air Patrol has been performing missions for America for
over 70 years.

My How Things Have Changed In The Ozarks!
Evelyn Allen Fullerton,
Echo From Mockingbird Hill
Taney County News
707 Murry Ave., Crane Mo., 65633 • 417-723-5708
(Taken from the Crane Chronicle/Stone County Republican November 3, 2009)
I have already written a story about the summer of 1936. Remember we had a drought. It was very
hot and dry. This is another story that took place that same summer.
All you gardeners are familiar with a small, green prickly thistle that grows here in the Ozarks. It has
a stem with sharp points on it called thorns. These thorns grow from the base of the plant to the top. We
always called it Thorny Thistle. It grows around the barnyard. The seeds were brought to the garden,
when you used barnyard waste for fertilizer. Grandma (Eliza Jane) Bid had these growing in her garden
along with the weeds, She was trying to keep some vegetables growing by watering them. Grandma was
pulling the weeds and thistles from the rows and middles. She accidentally got a thorn stuck in the palm
of her hand. It penetrated deep in the tissue. Grandma tried to pick it out with a darning needle she used
for sewing. She could not get it out. She was knowledgeable of using carbolic acid to sterilize things.
I wrote my previous story about Dad moving us up to my Grandparents house for the summer. My
Mom was there to help her. Before long Grandma’s hand was very sore. Several attempts were made
to try and get the thorn out. Her hand grew worse by the day. She tried all her home remedies nothing
worked. Her hand had a large red and yellow circle on it. It made her sick from the infection that was
in it. I was just weeks away from my sixth birthday. I paid attention to what happened that summer. It
is incredible in my memory to this day. Grandma’s hand turned into a swollen inflamed abscess. She
asked Dad to take his straight razor and open it up. But of course Dad refused. Grandma was running a
fever. They did what they could to keep her comfortable. There was no aspirin or nothing like it then.
One morning Mom told us three kids Dad has gone to get Dr. Shumate. I had never seen a doctor. If we
get a cold, Mom and Grandma used home remedies.
It was mid morning when Dad and Dr. Shumate arrived. The doctor drove a black car with a rumble
seat in the back.
He was tall, had black hair and was dressed in a suit. He came in with his black bag. Efton, Edna, and
I stood back. We were all eyes. He looked at Grandma’s hand and said he would have to lance it. Mom
told us three kids to go outside and stand in the chimney corner. We were to stay there until she came
out and told us we could come in. We heard Grandma groan. After a while Mom told us we could come
in. Grandma’s hand was all wrapped up in a bandage. The smell of Carbolic Acid was strong. I knew
what it was, as Grandma would put a few drops in water to wash off a skinned place when we fell down.
In a few weeks Grandma’s hand was healed. She was back helping Mom with the washing of our
clothes and cooking. They were trying to keep us healthy.
Get Well Evelyn!

Last night I went to see the girls play basketball. Not many people go and they are missing out. The
three pointers were flying and it is a very fast moving game. Bailie Stine and Josie Young are fun to
watch as are the other girls, but I do not know them as I do Josie and Bailie. Josie makes the game look
so easy. When she shoots a three pointer, I feel like I could do it too, but we all know I would be lucky
to get the ball in the right basket, if I got close to the basket. I usually don’t. Bailie is as quick a player
as I have seen. She comes flying sown the court and steals the ball before you know what is going on.
The other girls are very good also but as I said, I do not know them but I do enjoy watching them. I like
the popcorn and the Diet Pepsi too. I am careful on what I eat on game day so that I can have them. I
have not made it to the boy’s game yet this year, but I will. I also like to watch the crowd too. Last
night I saw a couple necking in the bleachers, not kids, they would barely classify as middle age, and
it was pretty gross. I saw people who never got off their phones through the whole game. Why go if
you are going to mess with your phone. Again, not kids. I saw several men with little kids and they
seem to be doing well with the kids. There were not many high school kids there from either school.
The band played last night at halftime. They are a young group and I thought they did an excellent job.
I saw very few paying any attention to the music. Nor did very many applaud. They were so ignored
it made me angry. They practice as much as any ball team and they have to perform together and they
are children, they should be appreciated. Even after all this, I had a good time and I will go again even
though you freeze walking from the parking lot to the door. Yes, I am a wimp.
The mean little kid says to quit grumping and just watch the game. I used to like that kid.
Margo and I went to Springfield Saturday and I have never seen so many people in town when it was
not Christmas. I only wanted a bottle of nail polish and I got it but I had to stand in the checkout line
with seven people ahead of me, and one clerk. It was a makeup store that I never remember the name of
in Primrose Shopping Center. I never thought it would be so busy, but the clerk said they were having a
big sale. My nail polish was not on sale. The clerk did not know why, but I bought it anyway. It is the
only polish that I have ever used that does not chip the day you put it on. This particular one lasts nearly
a week unless you are sanding or something like that. Margo took one look at the parking lot and stayed
in the car. I will not go again on a weekend. From now on I am going on a weekday. The mean little
kid says that all the other drivers are happy with that decision; they don’t want me driving in town when
they are there. Is there a law pertaining to disposing of mean little kids? I may write my congressman.

January 9, 2015, a cold morning on Mockingbird Hill. What cold
weather and such a cold, north wind. Hope it warms up.
Psalms 34: 1-4; I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall
continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord:
the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with
me, and let us exalt his name together I sought the Lord, and he heard
me, and delivered me from all my fears. (KJV)
It was nice to see and visit with Carolyn Conrad. I hadn’t seen her
in a long time, since she retired from working at the bank. She had a
wonderful Christmas with her family and grandchildren.
Sincere sympathy to the family of Ben Loftin. He will be missed
by all his friends and loved ones. Ben was so nice and so is his wife,
Betty. I worked for Betty’s father, Mr. Smythe for several years. He
really liked my cherry pie. He was a great guy to work with. I meet
so many nice people working for Oxford Health Care Services. I
talked to Bill Short and he stated he had lost his nephew, Eric. Sincere
sympathy to his family. He will be missed by Bill as well as al his
family and friends. I think I remember meeting him one time.

Another Slice of Time
December 26, the day after. The 25th had been planned for a whole
month, then the quiet seeps in, a most-welcomed silence. The stacks
of big mixing bowls, cutting boards and bread pans are scattered all
over the kitchen. Some used daily, others will be put away for the
whole year.
We had a lovely Christmas at Vanetta’s house, with each person
contributing her own traditional dishes. I made chili cheese logs. I
made two big batches of banana bread, a pecan pie and a layered,
no-bake pumpkin pie. I had plenty to pass down to grateful hands,
making me feel good that I can still manage all these satisfying chores
and my own black walnuts!
I had one snag, a trip over a chair leg, breaking my middle toe, right
foot. It’s said a broken toe can’t be set. Swelling up and turning blue
began a new walking adaptation. I did this one the Tuesday before
Christmas. Ice packs help and staying off as much as possible, but
there are things I have to do.
An unusual twist to this incident happened on Christmas Day. My
daughter, Vanetta, wanted to help me. She wanted to take some items
to my car for me. On the way, she fell down her six duplex steps.
The loud bang brought us to our feet. She jumped right up and said
she was fine. However, she broke her middle toe on the right foot!
I could hardly believe it. She called later and said “Mom, my foot
looks just like yours now!” So, we are both working our way through
this the best we can. We have a cruise in February so hope things
are healed up by then.
Life drifts back to unhurried routines. Deflations set in somewhat like deflated snowmen and Santa’s, the balloons lying about in
crumpled heaps on the lawn. I reflect that, as exciting as Christmas
is, one month is enough. Imagine each month’s holiday being full
of all this activity!

with when a bobcat comes they most general bark at them from
