A Rootin’, Tootin’ Time
at Rainbow Bingo
The Western-style themed Rainbow Bingo event on Friday, June 12th,
was another fantastic hit. Many of the participants donned their cowboy
hats and boots and had a rootin’, tootin’ time. Thanks to our sponsors,
volunteers and those who participated, the Center raised almost
$3,000.00!
The 6th Annual Them Bones Seminar
was a huge success. Enhance Fitness
Site Coordinator, Mark Bryant, and
his friend, Mr. Bones, shared the latest news and information on how to
keep your bones healthy. They also
provided tips on how to build and
protect your bones.

Going Stir Crazy on
April Fools Day
April Fool's Day is serious business here at SESSC. Participants sported
their favorite hats or made one from a wide variety of hats and materials
available during this activity. Everyone had a delightful and wonderful
time. Just another day at the SESSC!
Phillip Jordan from AARP returned to
the SESSC to teach members and participants ways to protect themselves
from being swindled by thieves.
Those in attendance learned about
the latest tactics thieves employ and
they now know how to protect themselves.

June Birthday Lunch
Oscar Matthews
celebrated his 94th birthday in June.
Betty Mochizuki
celebrated her 95th birthday this month.
One interesting
tidbit about Mr.
Matthews is that he was
the person who painted
the Center when it was
first built, over thirty
years ago!
She still leads a
very active life to this day.
Betty enjoys playing golf
and earlier this year, she
completed a halfmarathon. That’s right, a
half-marathon!
Thank you, Oscar! We are glad that you joined
us at the June Birthday lunch.
Keep on trucking Betty!
Celebrating Juneteenth at the SESSC
Fai Coffin and Doris D. Morgan, both SESSC members, were responsible for making this year’s Juneteenth
presentation a huge success. Marjorie Brown and Mary
Downs led the group and eloquently described what
Juneteenth is about.
Members and participants also shared their experiences not only about Juneteenth, but also about how
things were back in the days of segregation. A short video
further highlighting the significance of Juneteenth was
shown next. The activity concluded with the singing of the
beautiful song, “Lift Every Voice.”
Marjorie Brown Leading the Group
Check with Alexander Arceo, the SESSC Membership Coordinator, if you are interested in finding out more
about Juneteenth or if you wish to see the video.

From the Director’s Desk
Summer Greetings from SESSC Director Lynda Greene
I just wanted to take a moment to say how much I treasure this community,
and not just for the air conditioning that we will need in these summer
months ahead!
Our Center has become one of my favorite gathering places because I love
hearing the laughter, seeing the smiles and welcoming hugs offered to each
other! It is a place where we come together to find new friendships, renew old ones and support
each other. We so have lots of fun along the way! We are constantly striving to keep our Center fun
and relevant to you and our community, and you are the key ingredient! We need your ideas and
continued participation. Please continue to complete the forms for the Suggestion Box. Someone
asked me if I actually read them…and, yes, I do read them so please keep them coming.
I have been thinking about the nature of our community – the day to day interactions that are the
very fabric of what makes our Center the wonderful place that is. And just like a marriage, it involves reflection about what matters most and it requires letting go of old ideas and oftentimes, old
grudges in order to move forward to a positive outcome or solution. Isn’t that a lifelong lesson to
learn? Personally, I know I keep learning that lesson over and over.
I ask this of you — that each of our members continue to demonstrate our welcoming culture, in a
very active way. If you see a new face, say hello and ask them to sit and have lunch with you. Our
greatness is formed in a large part in the small moments when we act and respond with compassion. That’s the good thing about our Center.
Best Regards,
Lynda Greene, SESSC Executive Director

A Message from the SESSC Board President
Dear Friends,
We are proud to announce the 4th Annual Dinner and Auction! The theme for this
year’s auction is, "Raising the Spirit for Boomers and Beyond.” The auction will be held
on Saturday, November 7, 2015, 6-9 pm. The annual auction has become our signature fundraising event. Last year’s auction was attended by over 120 guests and we
expect an even larger turnout this year. Our fundraising goal this year is $30,000. The
guests will enjoy a live and silent auction featuring a range of exciting items. All of the
proceeds from the auction will support the Center’s programs and activities. The planning has begun but we need your help to make this event a success. YOU CAN HELP us
accomplish our goal by:
 Making a tax deductible donation to this event
 Becoming a sponsor at the Diamond Level with a $3,000 donation
 Becoming a sponsor at the Ruby Level with a $2,500 donation
 Becoming a sponsor at the Emerald Level with a $1000 donation
 Donating items for the live or silent auction
 Purchasing an ad for the auction booklet
 Making a monetary contribution and have your name listed in our auction booklet.
As an auction donor, you will receive display of your promotional materials alongside your donated item(s) during
the auction and on the website and recognition in the auction booklet.
Donations can be sent to the Southeast Seattle Senior Center or contact Sally Chong, [email protected]. For
information regarding the purchase of an ad for the auction book please contact me, Evelyn Fairchild at
[email protected].
The success of this auction will be made possible with the help of local area business owners, community organizations, SESSC members, members of the staff, the board of directors and individual supporters, like you. It takes the
concerted efforts of Senior Services, King County and the local community to keep our Center open and functioning.
We want to thank the members of local Corporations, Columbia City Business Associates, Rainier Chamber, the
Rainier Lions Club and the Historical Society for their support by purchasing ads and donating items for our Auction
in the past. We also want to thank all of the individual supporters who will attend our event and those who will give
cash donations but are unable to attend.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Fairchild, SESSC Board President

I recently attended the “Challenges in Caregiving: Giving Care, Taking Care” Conference. I met several caregivers who shared stories of joy and grief. I believe the keynote speaker, Wendy Lustbader, captured the needs of all people, especially caregivers through her
speech, “Beyond the Physical: Caring for the Needs of the Spirit.”
In her speeches, she shared the story of a couple struggling to transition after the husband had a stroke and lost the use of half his body. Through working with this man, it became
clear to Wendy that he missed having a role in the community. He was seeking meaning.
Shortly after, he started preparing letters and stuffing envelopes for a local nonprofit organization. The man was
proud of his commitment to the agency and his perspective on his physical limitations changed. As a result, their relationship flourished and both felt supported by the other.
Lustbader shared that, “everyone holds the key to unlock their suffering. Finding meaning during difficult
times can be a struggle.” I’ve heard from many members that the Southeast Seattle Senior Center provides them with
meaning, whether they are helping another member, setting up lunch tables, or in community over a meal. Meaning
can be found in many different ways and in many different places. Where will you find yours?

Introducing the SESSC’s Poet
Some of you might know Harold Murphy as the person who assists our chef, Sharon Smith, in the kitchen. Some of you might know
him well enough to know he is kind, friendly, warm and caring, who always carries a big and bright smile.
However, there is something that you might not know about Harold. He enjoys writing poetry. He has three self-published books of poetry. His works were regularly featured in a poetry column of the FACTS
Newspaper. We hope that you enjoy reading one of his compositions.
Sanctified Reason
By Harold Murphy
Just Like
You and Me…
It Moves in the Air
Gradually…Like a Wave
It touches the Sandy Shores,
Gently…Like a Feather
It Swirls with Flower Petal Aroma,
Rushing…Like a wind unfurled
Just Like
You and Me…
A time cradled among
The Drifting Leaves,
The Budding Plants,
The Towering Snows,
The Drenching Rains
The Time of In-Betweens
Brooding Nature
Takes a Vacation,
Butterfly Mother Nature
Opens Her Wings…
And We Soar!
You See!...
Just Like
You and Me…
Icy Mountain Peaks Melt
And wash the Mountains clean,
Blooming Flowers Sway
And Wave a Sweet Hello,
Tree Branches Explore
Summer Time
Just Like
Arrives !...and
You and Me…
Balloons are Set Free,
The Summer
Children Smile,
Is a Sanctified Season
Feet Run with Laughter,
A Season with a Reason!
Families Bury Hatchets,
Hidden Loves Rise…
And Shade The withering Sun

SESSC Volunteer Corner
SESSC volunteers demonstrate with their investment in time, hard work, and loving care their commitment to
forming a strong community and welcoming culture at our center. We are proud to welcome these new additions
to our all-star team of volunteers:
Don and Mary Lou Johnston - Don and Mary Lou came
to Seattle from Federal Way. They have been coming to
the Center primarily for the lunch. Shortly afterward,
Don began volunteering in the Community Dining Program as a cashier on Thursdays and has helped minor
repairs at the Center. Mary Lou keeps the chairs and
centerpieces in the social hall neat.
Saundra Chambers – Saundra found out about the Center through Heather Robinson, our fantastic Massage
Therapist. We are very pleased to have Saundra on our
team of Community Dining volunteers. She helps as a
server, bringing food to clients eagerly awaiting lunch.
Saundra is calm and kind and ready to work! We are
grateful that she chose the SESSC as the way to give
back to her community.
Thomas Gipson – Thomas has many years of experience in a variety of fields. We are lucky he wants to share some
of his experience with us. Thomas keeps the Center’s chairs, tables, door knobs clean and sanitized. He also maintains the lobby, making sure it stays tidy. We are fortunate to have him as a volunteer.
We Need Your Help!
We really need your help! Please consider becoming a volunteer in the following areas:
Community Dining Lunch Program: Because participation in our lunch program has grown dramatically, Sharon Smith, our Master Chef, needs help in the kitchen with a variety of tasks, like food preparation, washing dishes
and lunch service in order to ensure excellent service. One of the perks of being a volunteer in the Community Dining Lunch program is that you don’t have to pay for lunch.
Front Desk Receptionist: Our list of receptionists has grown critically short and your help is greatly appreciated.
Receptionists have the special and distinct honor of being the first face new people see when they visit our Center
for the first time. Use your warm smile to greet people both familiar and new. It is its own reward.
Special Events: One of the ways the SESSC is able to provide the activities you enjoy is by raising money through
our various special events such as the Annual Dinner and Auction and Rainbow Bingo. Be a part of the group that
truly makes it happen at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center.
Stop by Kate’s office or call her at (206) 722-0317 to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you. New idea to
try: volunteer with a friend to make it even more fun!

SESSC Highlights
Beach Volleyball Is A Smash
Beach Volleyball started this past April. It came to us through the
SESSC Suggestion Box as a activity to have at the Center. Because the
SESSC staff aims to please, steps were taken to make this a reality.
The activity caught fire quickly and it is now among the most
popular games to play at the Center. Beach Volleyball takes place on
Tuesdays from 2:00pm to 2:30pm. Come and check it out for yourself.
We know you will have a blast.
