Wolf Hill has been a family owned and operated business since 1978. It was founded by brothers, Jim & John McKechnie. Our foundation
is built on strong family values and dedication, which is the root to our success. We started out with one location in Gloucester, MA. This
location consisted of a landscape division and, after a few years, grew into a retail store for garden center products and landscape supply
materials, serving both homeowners and local contractors. Since then, Wolf Hill has expanded to add a second retail store in Ipswich, MA.
Jim's wife, Kristine, and two daughters, Brittany and Lauren, work at Wolf Hill; John's wife, Pam, and their two children, Mark and Rachel
also work at Wolf Hill to keep it growing as a family owned and operated business for the forseeable future.
Since we have grown over the years, we have added much to our company. We carry landscaping and garden center supplies, bricks and
pavers, nursery stock, indoor & outdoor furniture, gifts & garden accents. Need your items delivered? Don't worry, we deliver all over the
North Shore! We even offer competitive wholesale pricing to our registered contractor customers.
All of us at Wolf Hill want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support. We appreciate every aspect of doing business with you
and look forward to another successful season. We hope that this booklet helps you in deciding where to purchase the products you need.
Please do not hesitate to call and speak with one of our managers for more information.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS AND SIX-MONTH GUARANTEE
PLEASE CARRY PLANTS BY THEIR CONTAINERS OR ROOT BALL. Carrying plants by their tops or trunks may cause
the weight of the soil ball to break the roots from the trunk or branches to crack. Plants should be watered
immediately after their arrival at your home. Until planting, water plants daily.
1.) Select the proper location for planting. Take care in selecting a sunny location for a full sun plant or a shaded area for a
shade or part shade plant. Note that Full Sun is over 6 hours of direct sunlight, Part Shade is 3-6 hours and Full Shade or
Dappled Shade is less than 3 hours of sun.
2.) Dig a hole 2-3 times as wide as the diameter of the container or root-ball to allow for generous backfill
to be added. For the backfill soil, we recommend using 1/2 Coast of Maine Penobscot Blend Planting Mix
and 1/2 native soil. Heavy clay soils may need additional sand added to loosen it.
3.) When the hole is just as deep as the root-ball, make a small mound of backfill to set the root-ball or container on, keeping
the “trunk flare” just above existing grade (1-2 inches). Do not plant too low, nor too high and avoid covering any foliage or
stems under the soil. Grafted plants must have the graft above the soil.
4a.) For a container plant, remove the pot and score the roots with a sharp knife or a pruner blade all the way around to
promote pot-bound growth outward.
4b.) Balled and Burlap plants (B&B) should have all material removed from the top 1/3 of the root ball, such as burlap, rope or
nails. Metal baskets should have the top 1/3 bent down below grade or removed. Burlap and baskets below grade may be left.
Be sure to remove all burlap touching the trunk of the plant, and score the sides through to the roots.
5.) Add backfill to 2/3 of the hole, lightly tamp the soil to remove air pockets, fill with water and allow to drain. Once drained,
continue to fill the rest of the hole with backfill and create a donut shaped ring or saucer 3-4 inches high around the outside of
the hole, which will act as a reservoir to retain water.
6.) Mulch over the planting with 2-3 inches of bark mulch to help retain water, keeping approximately
4 inches around the trunk free of mulch.
If fertilizing, we recommend using Espoma Bio-tone Starter Plus, following all instructions on the label.
******SALES RECEIPTS MUST ACCOMPANY ALL RETURNS******
We guarantee our trees and shrubs to be true to name and to be insect and disease free at time of purchase. They are
guaranteed against loss for a period of six months, provided they are not damaged and our planting and watering instructions
were followed. If a plant is not doing well, contact us immediately so that we may advise you on proper care. Should a plant
be determined a loss within the six-month warranty period we will issue a merchandise credit, one time, for the original
purchase price when accompanied by a store receipt. We will also issue a merchandise credit for a plant that is not true to
name.

If a tree must be staked due to abnormally
windy conditions, drive 2 stakes deep into the
edges of the hole, making sure to anchor
them in the undisturbed soil. Using heavyduty cloth or specialty plastic tree-chain,
secure the trunk to the stakes just below the
lowest branch leaving 1-2 inches of slack.
Remove after the tree has established its root
system or after 1 year, whichever comes first.
A tree that is staked too long or tight
becomes dependant on the stakes and will not
grow strong enough roots to support it.
Avoid wire, which could become girdled.

WATERING INSTRUCTIONS
Water is a critical factor to the successful establishment of landscape plants. Excessive or insufficient water will impede the formation
and/or elongation of new roots. Immediately after planting, water the root ball and the planting area deeply. The root ball of newly planted
trees must receive adequate water weekly during the entire first growing season, right up until dormancy in the fall, to become established.
More frequent irrigation may be needed during the summer season or in times of extended drought. Rainfall alone may not provide the
adequate, consistent moisture necessary for establishment. On larger caliper trees, weekly watering is necessary through the next several
growing seasons. According to research, "in the Northern part of the US, the establishment period, for recently transplanted trees, is
approximately one year for each one inch of trunk caliper."
Water daily for the first few days, then every other day for two weeks. After that, soak your plant twice a week using low water pressure or
a rain wand, gradually backing off to once a week, until late fall. Be sure to maintain the saucer and repair any washed-out areas. One-half
inch of rain or more will reduce the amount of water you need to apply. However, care should be taken not to overwater as this may result
in oxygen deprivation.
If you are uncertain as to whether a tree needs watering, dig down 6-8 inches at the edge of the planting hole. If the soil at that depth feels
powdery or crumbly, the tree needs water. Adequately moistened soil should form a ball when squeezed. Regular deep soakings are better
than frequent light wettings. Moisture should reach a depth of 12 to 18 inches below the soil surface to encourage ideal root growth.
USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONES
The 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to
thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones. Northeastern
Massachusetts is located within USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6. However, we have found that Zone 6 plants are susceptible to winter
damage in our area. In general, we recommend purchasing plants which are hardy to Zone 5. South-facing, sheltered areas are suitable
for Zone 6 plants. Zone 4 plants should be used for container plantings that are intended to remain outside year-round.

The most common reason for hydrangeas not to bloom is incorrect
pruning. Varieties that bloom on new wood (arborescens & paniculata)
should be pruned in the fall or late winter if needed and can take heavy
pruning. Varieties that bloom on old wood (macrophylla, serrata &
quercifolia) should be minimally pruned or deadheaded in summer.
Blooms for the following year are set in August and September. Stalks
killed off in winter can be pruned out, but we recommend waiting until
late May / early June since stalks often appear dead at the ends but
are, in fact, still alive and produce blooms along them stem.
More and more reblooming varieties, such as the Endless Summer
series, are being introduced. These plants bloom on new and old
wood. Faded flower stems can be cut to half their length to encourage
new blooms and can be trimmed in fall if needed.
Another problem to watch out for is over fertilization. When
hydrangeas are exposed to high amounts of Nitrogen (found in most
commercial fertilizers) they respond by growing more leaves than
flowers. We recommend cutting back on fertilizers high in Nitrogen and
adding Super Phosphate, Triple Super Phosphate or Bone Meal.

RHODODENDRONS
Rhododendrons are excellent plants for shady areas and are available
in a wide range of sizes and colors. Some varieties can also be planted
in sun. In general, small leaf varieties can take more sun than the
larger leafed types, but there are exceptions which are noted in the
descriptions below. Rhododendrons are acid loving plants. As such
they perform best when the soil is acidic (with a pH between 4.5 and
6.0). They need well-draining soil with an abundance of organic
matter. Many Rhododendrons are eaten by deer (with the exception of
PJM varieties which have highly aromatic leaves) and should be
protected in winter with netting or repellant spray. Rhododendrons also
benefit from the application of an anti-desiccant in winter months.
