Roth Family Lives for Paddlefish Season

Many things can bring a
family together. For the Roth
family that thing is Paddlefish
season. Ilene Roth of Sidney,
has been grilling and pickling paddlefish for as long as
she can remember.
Although she says the
paddlefish are very good
grilled, Ilene prefers to pickle
them. She explained that
paddlefish are perfect for
pickling because they don’t
have any bones, so you don’t
have to wait for the bones to
soften.
She says it’s an easy
process; it just takes a little
patience.
The very first step is to
cut the paddlefish meat into
pieces. The next step is to
soak the meat in 1 cup salt to
4 cups water for 48 hours.
After soaking, rinse the meat
and then soak in white vinegar for another 48 hours.
To start the pickling process, cook up the brine.
Ilene’s recipe calls for 4 cups
white vinegar, 2 cups sugar,
4 bay leaves and 2 teaspoons of pickling spice. Boil
brine for about 5 minutes, let
cool and then add 3 tablespoons lemon juice. To prepare the meat for the pickling
process, dice it up into serving size pieces. Using a gallon jar, Ilene then layers fish
meat with cut up onions before pouring the brine over
the fish. After waiting about a
week, the fish will be ready
to eat.
Ilene used to rely on her
brother to catch her paddlefish to pickle, but now she has
7 kids, 19 grandkids and 6
great grandkids who help
provide the meat. Ilene
stated, “They have to gut it,
but I’ll cut it up.”
Luckily for her family,
that is not all she makes. Ilene
has been selling her baked
goods for 22 years at
Sidney’s farmers market.
Known for her caramel
rolls, Ilene also makes jellies,
syrups and homemade wine
amongst many other dishes.
Along with rhubarb, grapes,
strawberries and apples,
Ilene goes through a lot of
sugar, cream cheese, sour
cream and eggs.
So much so that she
buys it by the case and uses
three fridges at her home.
As a matter of fact, she
recalls a time when sugar
was on sale and she bought
about 100 pounds of it. At almost 74 years old, Ilene has
many tricks up her sleeve.
One of her tips she disclosed
was how to make eggs last
longer. She says that flipping
eggs over every couple days
will keep them good. When

Although paddlefish is
the preferred item to be cooking up, Ilene enjoys making
about anything you can think
of, which is evident once she
starts talking about her various creations. Once the Sidney Farmer’s Market starts up
later this summer find Ilene
and get some of her famous
caramel rolls.

& Field Meet
The Sidney girls track
team took second at the
state track & field meet on
Friday and Saturday, May 24
and 25 in Laurel.
Placing for the girls
were Lexi Prevost, 3rd in the
100 hurdles, 4th in the 300
hurdles and 5th in pole vault.

Whitney Leuenberger
started track and field as a
freshman, she qualified for
discus and shot put at
divisionals. At State that
year she took the 6th place
medal in shot put in Laurel,
but didn’t place in discus.
As a sophomore, she
won the shot put at
divisionals and took second
in the discus and at state in
Missoula she won the shot
put and was 2nd in the discus. She also qualified in
javelin, but was one place
shy of medal placing, she
took 7th place. As a team Sidney took 3rd place that year.
She broke the 35 year old
school record in the shot put
at the top ten meet in
Glasgow that year.
Whitney’s junior year,
she won the shot put again
at divisionals and was throwing in the snow at State in
Bozeman and won the shot
put. She took 2nd in the discus at both divisionals and
state.
Her senior year she won
divisionals in the shot put
and broke a 15 year old
class A shot put divisional
record with a throw of 41’4.5”
and won the discus with a
throw of 136’. At state in Laurel she won the shot put and
won the discus. Her best
throw in discus is 146’4”. She
states “I struggled with my
events this year because of
class scheduling and the
weather. I wasn’t able to get
into the weight class I needed
for training and the snow
held us up.” Ending her senior year and her high school
track and field career, she is
a 3 time state champion in
class A shot put, 1 time state
champion in the discus and
2 time runner up, altogether
a 7 time state placer.
She has had injuries
during the years but she
hasn’t let that stop her.
Whitney suffers from scolio-
sis so she often goes in for
an adjustment and travels every 6 months to a year to see
Dr. Dacre in Billings. She also
has a shoulder deformity
which can cause her some
discomfort. She suffered this
year from a pulled tendon in
her elbow in her throwing
arm and a broken finger on
her left hand. She states; “injuries are just part of the
game and you just work
through them.”
Whitney will be attending Dickinson State University majoring in pre-dentistry.
She has also been given a
Track and Field Scholarship,
so she will be on the Blue
Hawk Track and Field Team.
Whitney looks forward to
competing at the college
level.

Altogether, more than 10
Tons of electronic waste was
recycled at the Spring 2013
“E-rase your E-waste” event
held in Sidney and Fairview
May 10 and 11. In their first
year hosting an event, 30
Fairview residents and businesses brought in more than
3,000 lbs. of that total during
that community’s annual citywide cleanup event held Saturday morning, May 11.
According to organizers,
118 area residents, businesses, schools and government agencies recycled
20,778 pounds of e-waste at
this year’s Spring “E-rase
your E-waste” event in Sidney and Fairview. Organizers
thanked area residents for
participating and, in particular, extended their appreciation to the volunteers who
help every year with the ewaste collection events.
“It went well,” Jackie
Couture, chair of the local “Erase your E-waste” Committee, said of this year’s first
collection. “Our volunteers
once again did an exceptional job in making sure everything ran smoothly for our
new e-cycler, Yellowstone Ewaste Solutions, out of Billings, MT, who also did a great
job for us.” She also thanked
the Richland County Solid
Waste Department for its
continued willingness to provide space for the e-cycling
event in Sidney.
Included among the
items collected in both communities were: 132 monitors,
127 CPUs, 25 laptops, 100
printers, 4 fax machines, 14
copiers and 106 television
sets. A half dozen microwaves and more than 2 Tons
of other, miscellaneous electronics (phones, gaming
consoles, mice, keyboards,
cameras, etc.) also contrib-
uted to the total.
“It was great to have
Fairview participate this year,”
Couture said, commenting
on this latest recycling event.
“Also, our new e-cycler,
Yellowstone E-waste Solutions, did a great job for us,
too, and the community once
again came out to support this
effort.”
That support has meant
significant reductions in
harmful chemicals and bulky
plastics finding their way into
the county’s local landfill.
While stressing that the fig-
ures are only estimates
based on typical computer
and TV systems, Couture
said the e-cycling event kept
more than 1800 pounds of
lead and 4800 pounds of
plastic out of the local landfill
as well as removing .19
pounds of mercury, a particularly hazardous chemical
even in minute amounts.
“Now we’re looking forward to the same successful
collaborations at our regular
fall event in Sidney set for this
coming September 6-7,” she
added.

Award-winning pianist Gy Salvevold and critically acclaimed and prize-winning international opera tenor, Christopher Bengochea, will be the featured performers at a special public performance on June 9th at 2 p.m. in Sidney’s
Pella Lutheran Church, located at 418 W. Main Street.
Salvevold started his piano career when he was three
years old, studying the Suzuke method under Sharon Anderson until he was eighteen. Continuing his studies at Montana State University in Bozeman under Laurel Yost, he performed extensively while also appearing with the Bozeman
symphony. Gy is the recipient of first prize in the 2012
Bradshaw & Buono International Piano competition where
he recently performed at Carnegie Hall, one of American’s
most prestigious concert halls.
The Basque American Tenor Bengochea began his
musical career as a pianist. He moved into the study of
opera during his time at Montana State University and later
the University of Montana. After becoming an award winner
at the Northwest Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and winning third prize at the Internationale
Societa Concertistica Vocal Competition in Santa MargheritaLigure, Italy, he decided to pursue singing entirely. It was in
Italy where Bengochea had the opportunity to study and work
with renowned tenor, Gianni Raimondi who described
Bengochea as “having a voice most brilliant and romantic:
that will become very important in the future of opera”.

number of general admission seats are available for $30
each. A special free will donation social hour will be held

Summer Sounds,
Music and Picnic in
the Park Series

The Watford City Chamber of Commerce, along with a
newly emerging area Arts Organization, will be hosting “Summer Sounds” a music and picnic in the park series at the
Watford City Tourist Park.
The series will kick off on Thursday, June 13th at 5:30
with music by area musicians and picnic food served by the
area Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS). The event will be held
every other Thursday throughout the summer and will feature local musicians and a picnic hosted by various community organizations.
“We believe this is a great way to give the community a
chance to kick back and enjoy summer and our beautiful
park,” said Lindsay Wingerter who is coordinating the event
along with her sister, Jessie Veeder and the Chamber of
Commerce. “It’s also a nice way for organizations to network
and fundraise for their causes.”
Veeder, who is an area musician, is excited to provide
local entertainers with a place to perform. She and local band
Lonesome Willy will be the featured entertainment as “Summer Sounds” becomes part of the kickoff event for Watford
City’s Annual Homefest on Thursday, June 27th.
“Summer Sounds” will be held on June 13 and 27; July
11 and 25; August 8 and 22; and September 12.

will host a reception “I Do: A Cultural History of Montana
Weddings” featuring a special presentation by Martha Kohl.
Kohl, an historian with the Montana Historical Society, is also
the author of the book by the same title. Tickets are available
now, $25 for MonDak members, $30 for non-members. Nonmembers can join at the time of purchase to take advantage
of the members’ discount.
The reception will be the perfect time to enjoy the exhibit
“I Do”, which features materials on loan from the Montana
Historical Society, and collections from the MonDak Heritage Center, including historic photographs and several
wedding dresses, some of which have not been exhibited
publicly in many years. The oldest dress dates to the 1880s.

Pool Opening Date
& Ticket Information
The Svarre Municipal Pool opened to the public on Friday, May 27 at 1:30 p.m. The pool began normal business
hours on May 28th. Season tickets are available at City Hall,
Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Daily session use is $4 for
the pool or slide, $8 for both. The Splash Park is free for
children 7 and under.
Season ticket prices:
Pool – family, $100; Slide – family, $100; Pool & Slide –
family, $175; Pool – individual, $60; Slide – individual, $60;
Pool & Slide – individual, $100; Vacation Pass – 10 punches
for $25; pool or slide are available for rent at $70/hour.
The height for the slide is 46”. No metal, zippers or rivets
will be allowed on the slide. Suits are available for rent. Lessons begin on June 10th and run through July 26th. Lesson
sign-ups begin June 3-7 from 9 a.m. to noon at the pool.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring encourages
farmers, ranchers, pesticide dealers and applicators, government agencies and homeowners to bring their unusable
pesticides to any of the 12 Project Safe Send collections in
July.
“This is a simple and non-regulatory program to help
people safely and legally get rid of unusable pesticides free
of charge,” Goehring said. “Over the past 20 years, thousands of people have brought more than three million pounds
of these chemicals to Project Safe Send collection sites.”
Project Safe Send accepts old, unusable or banned
pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides
and fungicides. The pesticides are shipped out of state for
incineration. The program is funded through product registration fees paid by pesticide manufacturers.
“Check your storage areas for any unusable pesticides
and safely set them aside for Project Safe Send,” Goehring
said. “If you find that the containers are deteriorating or leaking, pack them in larger containers with absorbent materials.
Free, heavy-duty plastic bags are available from the North
Dakota Department of Agriculture.”
People with more than 1,000 pounds of pesticides should
pre-register. No other pre-registration is required. A maximum of 20,000 pounds of pesticides per participant will be
accepted. Pesticide rinse water also will be accepted. The
first 100 pounds of rinse water will be taken free of charge; a
fee will be applied for each additional pound.

Early Bird Golf Scramble Benefit
Saturday, May 18 was a gorgeous day with 124 golfers
competing in the 7th Annual Early Bird Golf Scramble at Sidney Country Club. For the first time, all proceeds of the benefit tournament were designated for the Sunrise Women’s
Clinic in Sidney. The Assembly of God started the tournament, with half the proceeds going to a national organization, and half staying in Sidney. “They graciously turned the
tournament over to us,” organizer Mike Mohl explained. “The
transition to us was seamless, and we definitely took advantage of what they had built. Pastor Greg Ledgerwood, Lynn
Byerle and Brent Bowlds deserve a huge Thank you for all
their help.” Mohl also expressed gratitude to all the sponsors of the event. “Sponsors are the key,” he said. “It’s a fun
tournament, low pressure, encouraging golfers of all skill
levels and ages to participate.”
The overall and Corporate Cup winners were determined using the California handicap system. Overall winners each received a $75 gift card to the Sidney Country
Club Pro shop. The Corporate Cup team winner received a
traveling trophy. Other winners were randomly drawn and
received $50 SCC gift cards.
Approximately $15,000 was raised for the Sunrise
Women’s Clinic. The clinic provides early pregnancy verification and options education, as well as pregnancy and
parenting classes.

Miss Montana and Miss
Montana’s Outstanding
Teen Scholarship Program

Cowgirls ‘N Crowns is the exciting theme for this year’s
Miss Montana and Miss Montana’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Program! These amazing young women will be arriving in Glendive, MT on June 9 to start a whirlwind week of
excitement, adventure, community service, and the chance
to win the state title! After many preliminary events throughout the week, Miss Outstanding Teen will be crowned and
Miss MT will be crowned June 15th.
The Miss Montana program has been held in Glendive
for the last 9 consecutive years. Hundreds of volunteers come
from near and far to make these pageants thrive each year.
Many area businesses have also donated their time and
efforts.
The production will run from June 13th-16th. The winner
of the Miss Outstanding Teen will go on to compete at a
national level in Orlando, Florida and the winner of Miss MT
will compete in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City in
September. With over $444,000 worth in cash and scholarships at stake, these girls are excited and very serious about
the importance of acting as a role model and representative
of this amazing place we call home, Montana!

of Commerce or at the Dawson County High School Auditorium the nights of the program.
Miss MT Princess Program
This year there will be 15 girls participating in the Princess Program in conjunction with Miss MT and Miss Outstanding Teen MT pageants. These girls range from 6-9 years
old. Although they are not competing for a title, it is an excellent opportunity for them to showcase their poise, manners,
self-esteem and charisma!
The purpose of the program is for our Miss MT to mentor
young ladies who have an interest in some day competing in
the Miss Montana and Miss Montana’s Outstanding Teen
Scholarship Programs, and promoting community service.
The Miss Montana Princesses are featured in the production and Miss MT Competition Magazine, mentored by a
Miss Montana state finalist, participates in the parade, are
the special guests at the Royal-Tea, and enjoy an official
Miss MT Princess crowning moment.

During the summer, blood donations typically drop off
dramatically as donors go on vacation and schools close,
but the need for blood never takes a holiday. The American
Red Cross urges people to donate blood or platelets and
save lives this summer. Patients in Montana hospitals served
by the Red Cross depend on community blood donations
every day.
Every day, the Red Cross collects 155 pints of blood to
patients in our local hospitals. Regular blood donations from
people in our communities are critical to our ability to provide a steady and ample supply of blood for those who depend on its life-saving benefits.
Any healthy person age 18 (or age 16/17 with signed
parental consent) or older and weighing at least 110 pounds
may be eligible to donate blood. Valid identification is required for all blood donations. All eligible donors are asked
to schedule an appointment to donate blood by calling The
American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 to donate blood at
our upcoming Sidney Community Blood Drive on June 11th
from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the St. Matthews Catholic Church

New, Painted Buffalo Robes at Fort Union

Fort Union Trading Post has received two traditionally
painted buffalo robes. The artist, Mr. Darryl Growing Thunder
is a member of the Dakota and Assiniboine tribes from Fort
Peck, Montana said Park Ranger Loren Yellow Bird. The stories being displayed reflect the lifestyle of the Plains Indian
warriors. The robes include two different eras; pre-1850 and
post-1850 and were funded by the Fort Union Cooperative
Association. The robes will be displayed as part of the fort’s
living history programs according to Yellow Bird.
Historically, the Plains Tribes painted buffalo robes to
record significant events as early as the late 1600s. One of
the best examples of a pre-1850s painted robe is the recreation of the legendary Mandan chief Four Bears on his
war robe from the 1830s. The images on the robe depict
various battle scenes that tell Four Bears life as a warrior.
Post 1850s robes are often best known and associated
with the Little Bighorn battle. One of the new robes represents this time period with seven warriors representing the
seven bands of the Lakota. An image of a captured horse
from the soldiers they fought as well as 7th Calvary Company
Guidon flag is depicted.
Fort Union operating hours are from 8:00am to 6:30pm
CDT daily. Fort Union Trading Post is located 24 miles north
of Sidney, Montana and 25 miles southwest of Williston, North
Dakota, via highway 1804. While here also visit the reconstructed fort, trade room and bourgeois house.

Fishing Derby In Watford City

Spring is finally here and in anticipation for the fish biting the USDA Forest Service, Dakota Prairie Grasslands,
the City of Watford City and the North Dakota Game and Fish
Department want you to grab your fishing rod and chair for
the 9th Annual Children’s Fishing Derby. Meet at the Watford
City Youth Fishing Pond, Saturday, June 8, just east of the
Watford City football and track field.
Children ages 13 years and under are invited to toss a
line in the pond. Registration begins at 9 a.m. All registrants
must be accompanied by a responsible adult and will enjoy
a day of free fishing with friends and family. Lunch will be
served around 11 a.m.
Bring your fishing pole, tackle box, bait, and enthusiasm
to enjoy the outdoors. Dress appropriately and be prepared
to have fun with the family.
Fishermen should bring some means of transporting
their live fish home after the derby, as there will be no provision for on-site fish cleaning. We ask that everyone park
their vehicles in the football field parking lot.
The community of Watford City is again donating generously to provide prizes, food, and peoples’ time to make this
a day of family fun.

McKenzie Ranger District, is holding a Wildflower Photo
Contest and a Wildflower Walk to promote appreciation for
native wildflowers, use and enjoyment of the National Grasslands.
Wildflower Walk will be Friday, June 7 at 6 p.m. (central)
at CCC Campground (15 miles South of Watford City, turn
right just past the Little Missouri River Bridge). This will be an
easy walk lasting about one hour.

The City of Wolf Point’s
Chamber of Commerce and
Agriculture is starting an annual tradition of great beer,
delicious food, and music
with Brewfest 2013, the first
and only outside beer festival to be held at the Marvin
Brookman Stadium (Stampede Grounds), in Wolf Point.
The event is taking
place on June 15, from 6:00
p.m. to 11:00 p.m. inside the
earthen arena, and will feature over 16 American craft
beers from Montana breweries. Food will be available for
sale through the Wolf Point
Stampede Committee and
will compliment the different
brews’ unique flavors.
Funk in the Trunk, of Billings, will take the stage to
entertain patrons starting at
8:00 p.m.
Prior to the Brewfest,
Wolf City Rods and Rides will
be hosting a car show and
will feature muscle cars, rat
rods and motorcycles. Patrons can anticipate seeing
some 60 pristinely preserved
cars owned by club members
and classic car enthusiasts
from all over the state. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m.
with the car show beginning
at noon and lasting until 3:00
p.m. and will include a swap
meet and burnout contest.
Brewfest 2013 is one of
several ways the Chamber is
attempting to become more
active in their community.
They have recently created
their own website at

and just recently wrapped up
their springtime beautification cleaning around town.
They have an active Board
of Directors that consists of
13 members, with Jeff
Presser serving as President.
The event’s entertainment is sponsored by Western Bank and is being held
in conjunction with the bank’s
100 th anniversary celebration. “We are very pleased
with all of the work the Chamber has been doing in their
efforts to become more active in the community and we
are excited to be a part of that
positive momentum. I think
the Chamber is in a great
place and is poised for significant future growth,” said
Aaron Kurokawa, loan officer
for Western Bank.
The Chamber creates
an environment for members
to build relationships, develop professionally and become active in their community.
General admission tickets purchased in advance
cost $35 and will cost $40 at
the door with proceeds going to benefit the local Chamber of Commerce.

held each year on the third weekend in July. The festival
features visiting with friends and neighbors, watching the

McKenzie County Weed Control LAP
(Landowner Assistance Program)
Fairview Scholarship Winners
McKenzie County has funding available for landowners of Noncropland Noxious weed eradication. This program has been put in
place by the McKenzie County Weed Control, to assist landowners
in controlling harmful weeds on their land by subsiding some of the
costs incurred for chemicals the land owner needs for controlling
these problems.
With this program the McKenzie County Weed Control can assist
the landowner by supplementing the cost of chemical or bio-agents
for non-cropland areas. The Weed Board will issue a reimbursement
for chemical applied or bugs released up $500.00; however, this may
be contingent on funds available. This reimbursement will be given
with the proper paper work submitted.
