Austin D. Lucas Scholarship
2013-2014 Recipients
Tuition grants totaling $84,000 have been awarded to 60 students by the MDNA
Austin D. Lucas Scholarship Fund. Since the inception of the Fund in 1982,
1,080 grants totaling $1,428,000 have been distributed.
Only students whose parents work for an MDNA member firm are eligible for
the grants. Selections are made by the Fund’s Board of Trustees based on
academic achievement, extracurricular activities and a series of essay
questions. The essay questions allow applicants to express their desires and
plans for a college or vocational education and their future. Not every student
who applies receives an award. Each year the amounts and number of grants
vary. This year’s recipients were selected from a field of 66 students.

I also just want to say I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it
weren’t for the people who raised me; parents, siblings, friends,
family, church family—they’ve all shaped who I am today and I’m
truly blessed to have them in my life. As for volunteering, I really
love helping others. When I think about all I’ve been blessed with
and those who have to go without, it’s almost as if, who am I not
to help others? When I give my time to help others, I feel like I’m
making a difference, albeit small, it is something and it’s better
than only being wrapped up in myself and my own problems.

The Austin D. Lucas Scholarship Fund was started in 1983 by
Austin Lucas, a machinery dealer, whose goal was to help
fund the college education of children whose parents work
for firms belonging to the MDNA. Over the years, the scholarship fund has grown through contributions of Austin’s
fellow MDNA members. It is from this fund that scholarships are awarded.
The Trustees hope that Austin’s legacy of charitable generosity will continue to live on through the scholarship
recipients. The Trustees of the Austin D. Lucas Scholarship
Fund and members of the MDNA wish Rebecka Thaler and
all of this year ’s scholarship winners every success in the
future.
